Principal's Message
We are equally thrilled and apprehensive to
have more students coming and learning
at school starting from the beginning
of this month. Our teachers have been
very excited to meet some of their
students while preparing and adapting
their classroom and lesson plans for the
new learning format in Term 2. We keep
learning new strategies to reach students
who will learn in a mix of blended or hybrid
and online classes.
It takes a village to raise a child. This
African proverb reminds the importance
of the entire community of people working
together to provide for and interact
positively with a child that s/he will
experience and grow in a safe and healthy
environment.
Warm Regards,
Regina Elisabeth T. B.Sc, M.Ed
(Executive Principal)
As more and more students come to
school, I strongly encourage every single
Sekolah Pelita Bangsa community member
to stay vigilant against COVID-19 viruses,
follow the health protocol and take every
health situation seriously. It is wiser to
keep students home than risk the health
of teachers, staff, other students, and their
families. The school also will carefully
assess each situation, and will revert to
online classes for a day or a certain period
to prevent any potential COVID-19 spread
as deemed necessary. Let us practice
self-discipline in the pandemic to ensure
continuous learning for all of our students.
Lastly, starting with this month's issue, we
will feature two of our beloved teachers
and staff. All of our teachers and staff
make up the powerful and dedicated
Sekolah Pelita Bangsa team that has
worked tirelessly to ensure quality and
safe learning happens every day to all of
our students.
Enjoy this issue!
Welcome to Term 2, SPBians!
Starting this term, SPB students from
Nursery to Junior College have the
option, with permission from their
parents, of coming to school again.
Those who do come to school must
bring a School Admittance Pass and
comply with all health protocols.
Students were so excited to come to
school, and they especially enjoyed
walking down the school alley and
meeting up again with teachers and
friends.
In some levels, we have hybrid
learning, where Online and Offline
students learn together
at the same time.
BATIK
2
One of the classic patterns, Batik
Parang is widely used. Shaped
like waves, it has the meaning of a
struggle in life, which resembles the
sea waves breaking on a reef. People
who wear this batik motif are expected
to continue to struggle and never give
up in facing life’s challenges.
Batik Parang has six pattern types,
namely Parang Rusak, Parang Barong,
Parang Kusumo, Parang Kecil, Parang
Slobog, and Parang Klitik. This pattern
has its own peculiarities, especially
the Parang Barong pattern, which can
only be used by the royal family.
BATIK PARANG
4 BATIK SIDOMUKTI 5
You will often see Batik Sidomukti at
important Javanese traditional events,
such as weddings and inaugurations,
especially in Yogyakarta and Solo. The
main characteristic of this batik is the
natural coloring process, which uses
soybean. The soga or brown color in
Batik Sidomukti is the original and
ancient classic batik colour.
As the name implies, Sidomukti comes
from the word “sido”, which means to
be, become, or to continue, and “mukti”,
which means noble and prosperous.
Therefore, this batik pattern
is a symbol of prayer and
hope that people who wear
it will have ongoing glory
and prosperity.
BATIK KAWUNG
One of the oldest batik patterns in
Indonesia, Batik Kawung is shaped
like neatly arranged sugar-palm
fruit. This batik symbolises those
who always remember their origins.
In addition, the Kawung pattern
symbolises one’s ability to control
desire, maintain balance in behaviour,
and personify courage and justice.
Therefore, in ancient times, many
leaders wore batik with this pattern.
1
BATIK MEGA MENDUNG
This pattern, whose shape resembles
clouds, comes from our very own city
of Cirebon. Although the name means
dark cloud, the pattern does not mean
sadness. On the contrary, this type
of batik means patience and taking
great care when solving a problem.
The Mega Mendung pattern has seven
color gradations, symbolising the
seven layers in the sky.
National Batik Day
3
BATIK SEKAR JAGAD
As with the previous pattern, the
Sekar Jagad pattern was also usually
worn in royal communities. This
batik comes from the cities of Solo
and Yogyakarta. The word Sekar
supposedly comes from the word
“Kar”, which in Dutch means map, and
Jagad, which in Javanese means the
world. Thus, this motif symbolises
cultural diversity in Indonesia and
around the world.
This year, Secondary and Junior College students
participated in an Art Project Competition. In
this project, students were encouraged to create
original works of art. There were many categories
to choose from, such as photography, painting,
drawing, collage, and anything that visually
represented their Covid-19 message.
The goal was to develop an artistic work ethic
while fostering confidence, responsibility,
experimentation, and originality, in addition to
developing skills and techniques with a variety
of media by creating a work of art that expressed
feelings and thoughts about Covid 19.
This competition was judged by Mr Kujang, Ms
Tria, Mr Wanda (Category A), and Mr Kujang, Ms
selected based on Artistic Quality, Interpretation/
Meaning (written), and Submission Time (due
date). And now we proudly present the artworks
from the winners. Check them out!
SPB PARENTING TIPS 1
14
Appreciation – a parenting skill for
the ages
by Michael Grose
Do you have a child who craves
attention? Does their attention-seeking
at times deflate and overwhelm you?
If so, you are not alone. Attentionseeking
is perhaps the most common
misbehaviour in families.
“Look at me, Mum” and its many
variations become like a nervous tic
driving parents to distraction. It’s good
to give kids your undivided attention but
there are limits to how much attention
you can give. Unfortunately, attentionseeking
becomes a pattern of behaviour
that’s hard to break.
My first parenting mentor Prof. Maurice
Balson, author of Becoming Better
Parents, believed that children who
constantly seek attention are generally
discouraged. “I am not good enough” is
their belief.
The antidote to discouragement
according to Balson, was to increase the
amount of encouragement that a child or
young person received. Encouragement,
literally meaning ‘to give heart or
courage’ focuses on the processes of
improvement, effort, enjoyment and
contribution.
The latter, contribution, is the most potent
of these processes. Kids will usually
belong to their families in two ways. They
are either contributing members, or are
known for their poor behaviour. For kids
known for poor behaviour, their usual way
of operating shows a mindset of “If I’m
not appreciated, at least they’ll know I’m
around”.
Attention or appreciation? There’s no
contest. Appreciation is the genuine deal
when it comes to helping kids feel good
about themselves.
Why appreciation works
Appreciation is highly motivating. Even
adolescents will generally respond
to a parent’s appreciative comments,
although their faces won’t always not
show it.
Appreciation has an old-brain
connection. The job of our old brain or
survival brain, is to keep us safe. Our
safety can only be guaranteed if we are
a part of a group, so parent appreciation
helps kids feel secure, preventing them
from resorting to negative attentionseeking
behaviour to feel part of the
group.
Appreciation is approval on steroids
Approval says I like what you do.
Appreciation means much more. It shows
how behaviour impacts on another
person on an emotional level, which has
a stronger impact.
Showing appreciation is a wonderful
way to shape a child’s behaviour in
positive ways. “Thanks so much for
cleaning your toys away without asking.
It makes my life so much easier.” This
type of comment will usually generate a
dopamine (feel-good chemical) response
from a child, which means they are likely
to repeat the behaviour to replicate the
feeling.
How appreciation works
There are four rules to be mindful of,
when you show appreciation:
It must have meaning
Appreciation must be real and related to
a specific behaviour for it to be effective.
It should let child know the emotional
impact of their behaviour
Either with words (“It makes me feel
happy”) or through non-verbals (a smile,
a hug or high-five) your child should see
that their behaviour has had a positive
impact on you.
It should be genuine
You can’t fake sincerity with a child or
young person as they are generally adept
mood detectives.
It’s best if it has small differences
Showing appreciation is not a one-size
fits all behaviour. Appreciation should
be shown a way that matches the
situation and suits your child. Consider
writing a note to show appreciation for
something special. Boys often prefer
private encouragement rather than
public acknowledgement so consider
when and where you shower them with
encouragement.
Positive side effects
There are plenty of positive side effects
to showing appreciation for a behaviour.
An appreciative parent comment
helps create a healthy, happy family
atmosphere. Appreciation can change
the mood of the giver and receiver
and it’s a behaviour that if adopted
by children can be experienced by the
next generation. That makes parent
appreciation a behaviour for the ages.
SPB PARENTING TIPS 2
SPB PARENTING TIPS 2
Teaching your kids about consent
by Michael Grose
The concept of respectful relationships,
including consent, has been discussed at
a school level for some time, but it hasn’t
yet gained universal traction with families.
Lacking confidence and unsure where
to start, many parents have struggled to
make headway in this area. If this sounds
familiar, these ideas will help you make a
start.
Establish home as a safe place to talk
Is your home a place where children
can talk about any topic? Sexuality and
relationship education are subjects that
many parents place in the ‘let’s talk about
this when you are older’ basket.
Professor Kerry Robinson, who is in the
School of Social Sciences and Psychology
and the Sexualities and Genders Research
Network at Western Sydney University
advises parents to
be factual when answering children’s
questions, emphasising the importance
of staying informed about the subject
kids are interested in.
In a recent article in The Guardian, she
said “…. have it set up early with your
child that when they talk about certain
things you give open, simple, honest
answers. Then you set a precedent that
you can build on.”
Professor Robinson also advises parents
not to fob off children’s questions:
“Straight away you’re setting a pattern
of not answering and putting it off. Kids
learn really quickly that this is a taboo
subject. They will talk to their friends
about it: they won’t talk to their parents
and other adults about it because it’s
taboo.”
Teach no means no
Children learn about mutual consent
through their play and sharing. A child who
doesn’t want to share their toys has a right
to be left alone, rather than being scolded to
change their mind. A parent who withdraws
a privilege in response to a teenager’s
poor behaviour shouldn’t be subjected to
repeated attempts to negotiate a different
outcome. Reinforce with children and young
people that a no is not an invitation to ask
again.
Emphasise choices
Framing behaviour as a choice is a central
consent strategy for children or all ages. A
young child who shares a toy with a friend
can be told, “Good choice Harry. Now you
can have fun together.” A primary school
child who completes their homework
assignment early can be reminded, “Now
you’ve got plenty of time to relax. Smart
choice.” The teenager who quietly helps you
prepare a meal can be told “You could have
done anything after school, but you chose to
help me. I appreciate that.”
Teach kids to seek consent
Another important component of consent
is that children and young people should
also develop the habit of seeking consent
from others. “Ask your sister if it’s okay for
you to play that game next to her.” “Ask
grandma if she feels like a cuddle right
now.” Permission-seeking is another piece
in the respectful relationships puzzle that
you can reinforce with kids.
In closing
The best age to start teaching your
children about consent is when they are
young. The second-best age is whatever
age they are right now. Consent education
is too big an issue to ignore or leave to
schools to manage. It’s something we all
have to commit to if we want real change
to occur.
International Education Expo
ini adalah tahun kelima. Dua
tahun terakhir, kegiatan ini
diadakan secara online.
“Kami tidak pantang menyerah
untuk memberikan layanan yang
baik bagi generasi bangsa. Meski
saat pandemi Covid-19, malah
dengan diadakan secara online,
kami dapat mengundang sekolahsekolah
lain yang ada di bagian
pulau lainnya,” papar dia.
Kegiatan ini adalah sarana yang
sangat baik bagi generasi bangsa
untuk mulai dapat merencanakan
masa depan sejak awal. Begitu
banyak jurusan baru yang
mungkin belum ada sebelumnya,
yang dapat membuka wawasan
dan mempersiapkan mereka
memasuki era yang berkembang
pesat. Peserta didik dapat
mengeksplorasi minat dan
bakat mereka pada jurusan dan
universitas yang kelak mereka
inginkan.
Perwakilan universitas
pun menyambut baik dan
memiliki kesempatan untuk
memberi informasi yang akurat,
jelas dan lengkap mengenai
kurikulum, mutu pendidikan,
program-program studi yang
ditawarkan, fasilias, keunggulan,
biaya pendidikan, serta lama
pendidikan. Selain itu juga
mereka memberikan panduan
program beasiswa dan informasi
kehidupan seputar kampus.
“Begitu banyak informasi yang
didapatkan peserta. Dapat
melihat kesempatan dan
peluang kerja di masa yang
akan datang,” terangnya.
“Di SPB, siswa kelas 9 sudah
mengenal karir, jurusan dan
ketertarikan mereka pada
