A key factor during the design process is connecting
with the clients, and understanding that it is a
collaboration. Although we may say it is a twoway
street, it is important to recognize that the architect
has the knowledge to provide the functionality
and aesthetics to the project that the client
envisions.
Most clients usually have a pretty good idea of
what they want because they’ve seen it somewhere
or heard it from someone. However, not all ideas
or concepts in one’s mind necessarily are fitting or
even relevant in the project at hand. The architect
must study the context carefully and advise his client
on site orientation, building composition, and
present strategic design alternatives.
It is fundamental to establish a cordial discourse
where all ideas are
welcomed. “What
if…” should be repeated
as often as
possible. While the
client struggles with
envisioning him or
herself walking from
the Master Wing
to the Main Terrace,
the architect
is taking care of the
air conditioning,
lighting, and finishing
details. The
technical aspects
of a functioning
residence can be
very challenging
and need to be addressed
early on.
However, a clear
simple concept
that is both, interesting and practical, will always be the primary factor in a
well-designed home.
The outcome of a built project is a direct reflection of the sustained architect/client
relationship during design and planning phases. The Contractor’s
responsibility is to recognize the design intentions in that relationship.
The steep, sloped terrain and corner lot condition of 36 Surfside Road
presents unique opportunities that made the design process a challenging
task. During the early stages of design for the house, Chegui Benitez and his
wife Darlene were very clear on the idea of an open plan for main living areas
to be on the same level as the Master Wing. This was an ongoing conversation
that directed the design to where the clients wanted to go.
