What is the plan?

The PHA conference rooms were the site
of an interesting conference on strategies
and planning for a possible emergency in
our central / eastern area. It was sponsored
by the Association of Industrialists / Central
Eastern Region, the organization OKA (Project
Management & Strategic Leadership), RF
Maintenance, CIS International and NTS, as
well as several of the companies located in
our region. The importance of planning to
face an emergency is to ponder the alternatives
and ideas presented to join efforts
amongst all affected parties. The importance
of establishing community / governmental,
industrial and commercial relationships is to
emphasize the importance of guaranteeing
the safety of the surrounding citizens, businesses,
industries and government in the
event of an emergency. It is important to also
note the significance of educating the community
about climate change, emergencies
and awareness of
corporate responsibility.

Meeting" were:

Cristalia, among
others.
The conference
had a large group
of representatives
of the companies as
well as the presence
of several mayors,
among them: Ray

was the the Meteorologist,
Ada Monzón, and the Rescuer
and Commissioner Ing.
Ángel D. Ortiz from EATON.
Both shared lessons learned
and best practices when
working on the relationship
and interaction of industry,
government and community
to increase resilience on
our Island.
The Central Eastern Region of the Industrial
Association and its Director, Rafael Díaz, paid
a tribute to Mr. Xavier Muñoz, Director of the
Municipal Office of Emergency Management
of Las Piedras.

A joint effort between the District Senator of
Humacao, Hon Wanda Soto Tolentino; the
Assistant Director of Tourism for promotion
and marketing, Mrs. Glenda Lee Rodriguez;
and Mr. Alejandro Caicedo Benet,
Assistant Director of Air, Maritime and Hotel
Development of PR, sparked a series
of initiatives have started to insert Palmas
as the best tourist destination in eastern
Puerto Rico. With this goal in mind, there
has been a series of meetings with our
PHA President, Lcdo. Erasmo Reyes; Executive
Director, Antonio Maldonado; the
PAC president, José Vázquez; renowned Chef Daniel
Vasse, in representation of the gastronomic sector of
Palmas del Mar; and me, Lissette Rosado, in representation
of our magazine Live & Life in Palmas. Some of the
initiatives that have already taken place recently, as part
of the promotion for Palmas del Mar, is the recording
of four contestants of Miss Puerto Rico Universe in our
Pterocarpus forest which was broadcasted during the
beauty contest. The four Miss Universe contestants visited
our Beach Club where Chef Daniel Vasse offered all
of us a delicious lunch at Chez Daniel at the Beach Club
restaurant. ➤

GOING COASTAL ROUTE
There is nothing greater than having the convenience of living in
the Palmas bubble and having a great selection of gastronomic experiences
just a few minutes away in your golf cart. Having said
that, some days are meant for hitting the road and exploring some
cool hideouts along the way, otherwise known as “Chinchorreo”.
In true Palmas Fashion, I must tweak the term just a bit and add
some “Glam” to the mix since every outing is a new opportunity to
showcase our best Glamchorreo style. Just 5 miles south of Palmas
del Mar, you will find yourself on the COASTAL ROUTE starting
from Yabucoa and making your last stop at Guayama. Aside from
the breathtaking views on your left-hand side, it is amazing to see
so many new businesses thriving considering this area was severely
impacted during Hurricane Maria. Here is a list of the spots and

greetings!
I want to use this volume of our magazine
to let you know that your Board of
Directors is working and will continue
to work to insure all of us keep enjoying
the best place to live in Puerto Rico:
Palmas del Mar. With this purpose in
mind, we have opened new channels
of communications with the new Mayor
of Humacao Reynaldo Vargas, also with
the Senators representing the District
of Humacao, Senators Wandy Soto
and Rosamar Trujillo Plumey and with
key government agencies engaging in
key topics of importance for our community
such as electricity, coast5al erosion problems and
tourism promotion and marketing.
These initiatives have already began to bear fruit. As
an example, we have already met with high officials from
the PR Tourism Company and have been able to show
case for them everything Palmas del Mar has to offer. As
a result, we have been able to obtain the commitment
from this government agency to include Palmas del Mar
in all tourism promotional efforts and platforms, both internal
and external, as the tourism and investment place
of choice in Puerto Rico. This initiative includes all digital
platforms and all publications of the Tourism Company,
which is the principal promoter of Miss Puerto Rico Universe
contest.
In this regard, recently, Palmas del Mar hosted several
Miss Universe contestants, which show cased them and
several Palmas amenities with photos and videos used on
the preliminary contest recently aired on television. The
Miss Universe candidates spent a full day at Palmas and
were welcomed with a breakfast at the Flamas Restaurant
followed by a video and photo session at the Pterocarpus
Forest . Our Chef Daniel Vasse, welcomed them at the
Beach Club where he was filmed giving the contestants
a culinary class and a succulent lunch. This activity was
followed by a tour of our golf facilities and golfing lessons
by our own pro Eduardito Figueroa. Our special thanks to
the Palmas Athletic Club (PAC) and to its President Pepito
Vazquez and its General Manager Seth Bull, for their support.
I can personally attest that our Miss Universe candidates
will be our ambassadors as Palmas del Mar totally
captivated their souls and minds. This project as well as
other initiatives and programs being developed in coordination
with the Tourism Company bodes well or Palmas
del Mar. But, just as we have worked in placing Palmas del
Mar at the center stage of Puerto Rico promotional efforts,
we will continue to work on other critical issues of great
importance to our community such as coastal erosion and
electricity among others.
As we address critical issues, we continue to work on initiatives
that will improve our day-to-day living experience
at Palmas del Mar. For example, recently PHA installed a
new digital billboard, which will serve as a modern com-

munity communications tool and completed some major
road improvements around Palmanova Plaza and Club
Cala areas. Soon our main gate facilities will have a new
structure that will not only enhance the beauty of our main
access point to Palmas del Mar but will also enhance the
security services we offer to our community. Additionally,
with the help of community collaborators, PHA is finally
developing a much-wanted Dog Park facility near the PHA
Skate Park and is working on the planning of two Fitness
Trails, which will be available to the residents of Palmas del
Mar. These are just some examples of community projects
that your Board of Directors is working on to enhance our
quality of life.
Your PHA Board is committed to better the services and
the protection of our community. Our security and quality
of life are the pillars that drive the endeavor and work
of your Board. We are counting on you and our excellent
PHA staff as part of our team.

Optic
Project
Update
The installation of fiber optic cable throughout Palmas del Mar continues at a steady pace and on schedule. Cabling
has already been installed along principal roads of Palmas from the Main Gate to La Jolla and to the PAC. and will
continue until all areas are reached. Simultaneously, service connectivity has begun in residential areas included in
Phase One (Palmas Reales, Palmas Plantation, The Woods. Costa Verde, Villa Franca and the PAC Country Club).
Service package offers are expected to reach service areas customers by the end of October 2021.
Traffic
Safety
PHA has begun a series of road improvements
throughout geared toward enhancing vehicle movement
and safety in our community. These improvements
include road expansions, creation
of parking spots, conducting traffic
studies to correctly eliminate safety hazards
and marking the appropriate use of traffic
lanes. You will notice the new markings at the
traffic circle to insure the appropriate flow
and improve safety.
Along with these improvements, we need
to raise awareness among our residents and
visitors about the need to be safety conscious
at all times. This includes, driving within speed limits, avoid passing
other vehicles and keeping your eyes open as you approach golf
cart crossing points located at nearly every road within Palmas del
Mar. Also, parents are reminded that the age limit for driving golf
carts is 16 years and minors must carry an ID form with them at all
times.

Palmas Animal Welfare was organized to address problem
of the stray and abandoned pets in Puerto Rico .
This year, to date, over 75 pets have been pulled from
the streets in this community alone, 100, in total, and
costing us on average 1000.00 per pet.
We vetted to strict protocols, which includes everything
from shots, spay, neuter, to heart worm treatment
,surgeries, medicines and boarding, very often long
term boarding.
We still, 1.5 years later, have a rescued abandoned pet
we named Ariel, found in an abandoned pool in Palmas,
residing in the shelter, until she finds a home.
El faro de Los Animales has been instrumental in help-
ing us re home and provide long term care for Ariel and
many others.
As mentioned, this is costing Palmas Animal Welfare
close to 100,000.00 in a year, with so much left too do,
and can only continue with your donations.
Pets , roaming and procreating is not something any of
us want in our community, and completing families , with
our rescues, is the way we complete each process.

ARCHITECTURAL STANDARDS

Architectural Consultant to the ARB
revisited
The Architectural Review Board (ARB) is currently
revising its Design and Development
Guidelines. True to its main purpose – to protect
and preserve the nature, elegance and
the architectural uniqueness of the Palmas
del Mar community – this revision focuses on
clarifying and updating the architectural standards
required by the Deed of Amended and
Restated Declaration of Rights, Restrictions,
Conditions and Constitution of Restrictive
Covenants, dated July 20, 2020.
The ARB believes that compliance with the
architectural standards should not impede the
creative use of modern architecture. Although
the requirement for use of slanted clay tiled
roofs will remain, the revised guidelines will
allow the proper incorporation of photovoltaic
panels and skylights within the tiled roofs
and the use of gutters that do not hide the tile
edge. A new chart guiding the proportion of
voids to solids will allow for larger openings
to further enjoy the spectacular views while
maintaining the reading of volumes, rather
than parallel planes. The expression of volume
is further reinterpreted to allow for corner
windows and the creative use of glass in
defining volumetric shapes.
While the use of the preferred earth tone
colors will still be required, the standard will
be amplified to define additional color hues
and clarify the definitions of allowable main
body, trim and accent colors. Architects will
be encouraged to use creatively authorized
materials, while respecting the enchanting
character of the neighborhoods and the entire
community.
The ARB must be seen as a facilitator for
orderly development. This group of professionals
is here to help owners and designers
achieve their dreams without disturbing the
Palmas character we have all cherished for
years.

It’s time to build.

It isn’t a secret anymore, Palmas is sold;
there is hardly inventory for sale and the demand
continues to rise. Palmas is "in" and
every day new prospective owners, Puerto
Ricans and North Americans, arrive. It is no
wonder, those of us who live in this paradise
know the incalculable value of living in
a community like Palmas which is not only
beautiful, but efficient and fun. I would dare
to say one of the places (if not the place)
with the highest quality of life in Puerto Rico:
it’s clean, safe, beautiful, pluralistic, and fun.
Hey, I didn't say perfect, but almost, almost!
I know many will agree.
Well then, now that everything is sold
... It's time to build! And this process has
already begun. Currently there are an average
of 10 constructions in progress and
many more in the pipeline.
To learn a little more about the process of
building a house in Palmas we interviewed
two architects who have just designed properties
to be built soon in Palmas. We also
bring you, in this edition, the most significant
changes in the Palmas ARB Building
Code, currently in the revision process.
We start with the house of Mrs. Bonnie
Bistany Altomonte, owner since 2014. Bonnie
came to Puerto Rico and fell in love with
our community and our Island. She is a very
enthusiastic person, full of energy, involved
and a very active member of our community.
“I love the Island. I’ve been visiting Puerto
Rico for the past 25 years regularly and decided
to make Palmas my home. I enjoy the
community and I love to get involved in all
social aspects. A wonderful community where you get to meet people
from all parts of the United States. So many different backgrounds and
cultures! I hope and plan on being a part of Palmas del Mar for many years
to come.
Now Bonnie has embarked on a beautiful project--building her bream
home! It’s not an easy task, but as she stated, her experience with the
architect has been a very positive and rewarding one. “Working with Eli
Mariano Martinez is nothing but a pleasure. He is very attentive and considerate
when helping me to reach my goals and has been supportive in
all aspects of my project. I wanted a house that could merge with nature,
with open spaces, that has a Caribbean feel but with a modern twist. I
want to maximize the views and the light. I want a warm and invitational

space. I have made so many friends
over the years in Palmas that have become
family; I want them to be part
of this project!” And we can see it
as it happens, Bonnie is a social person,
and we are sure that her house
will be always open to the community
and friends. Palmas is a community
that cares!
Eli Mariano Martinez, the architect,
tell us his story: “The design of this
residence presented several challenges,
since the shape of the site is
that of a narrow trapezoid in the access
area to the property, with a drop
of 9 meters towards the rear. The lot
is designated to make a townhouse
type house in which windows are not
allowed on the side walls, and whose
construction reaches the lateral limits
of the lot. The proposed design must
comply with the allowed heights,
sloping roofs with tiles and required
patios, which, in combination with
the characteristics of the site, shaped
the design.
On the first floor, the proposed design
is an open space that maximizes
the ocean view from the kitchen, living
room and dining room. The design
also includes facilities such as a
garage for two vehicles, an elevator,
an infinity pool, and an open terrace
to enjoy the views. It is a true honor to
have been selected for this task," Architect
Eli Mariano Martínez tells us.
Another of the residences that
will begin to be built soon is that of
our dear friend Dr. Chequi Benitez
and his wife Darlene Bajandas, pure
Palmeños. Chegui came to Palmas in
1988 and worked in the construction
of Palmas when he was a student. He
lived at Villa Franca, Plantation, at
Club Villa, and at Harbor Lights. Chegui
was also the founder and owner
of our beautiful stables at Hacienda
Buena Vista. Now he is building his
house, this being the second time,
after the experience of having built
the Harbor Lights. “On that occasion
I learned the hard way, I chose the

wrong contractor, and I did not consider many aspects that I am considering
now. This time I am blessed with the help of a good architect, Carlos Salazar,
and an excellent contractor such as Naim Berrios, who has built countless
residences in Palmas.
"I am a ‘wannabe’ architect," Cheguie Benitez tells us. And he explains
that he was very clear about how he wanted his house, but it was a creative
process shared with the architect. “I was involved in the entire creative process,
and at times he convinced me that some of my ideas were not possible
or correct, but it was a dynamic
and respectful process.” The architect,
Carlos Salazar, tells us, "Chegui
drew his ideas. Darlene, for her part,
looked at magazines to show the architect
things she liked. That way he
could see through my eyes what I
liked or wanted." Darlene explained
that they communicated to the architect

Most clients usually have a pretty good idea of
what they want because they’ve seen it somewhere
or heard it from someone. However, not all ideas
or concepts in one’s mind necessarily are fitting or
even relevant in the project at hand. The architect
must study the context carefully and advise his client
on site orientation, building composition, and
present strategic design alternatives.
It is fundamental to establish a cordial discourse
where all ideas are
welcomed. “What
if…” should be repeated
as often as
possible. While the
client struggles with
envisioning him or
herself walking from
the Master Wing
to the Main Terrace,
the architect
is taking care of the
air conditioning,
lighting, and finishing
details. The
technical aspects
of a functioning
residence can be
very challenging
and need to be addressed
early on.
However, a clear
simple concept
that is both, interesting and practical, will always be the primary factor in a
well-designed home.
The outcome of a built project is a direct reflection of the sustained architect/client
relationship during design and planning phases. The Contractor’s
responsibility is to recognize the design intentions in that relationship.
The steep, sloped terrain and corner lot condition of 36 Surfside Road
presents unique opportunities that made the design process a challenging
task. During the early stages of design for the house, Chegui Benitez and his
wife Darlene were very clear on the idea of an open plan for main living areas
to be on the same level as the Master Wing. This was an ongoing conversation
that directed the design to where the clients wanted to go.

Palmas Community Church...
Celebrates EXPANSION
For over twenty-five years, Palmas Community Church (PCC) has
been sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ within Palmas del Mar and the
surrounding communities. PCC is an English-speaking non-denominational
church whose Mission is to Build a Sustainable Body of Believers.
Through its various ministries, PCC supports the residents of Palmas del
Mar, along with thousands of others throughout Puerto Rico, through
several missions and ministries.
The church began in the seventies, meeting in various locations
throughout Humacao. The church was incorporated as Palmas Community
Church in the nineties and has been holding services in the lower
level of the PHA building for the past several years. PCC acquired two
acres of land to the south of the PHA building to construct a church facility,
but Hurricane Maria delayed the construction. However, the unexpected
delay became a blessing in disguise.
With the growth of families moving to Palmas del Mar over the last
two years, the demand for expanded services and ministries, especially
children’s and youth ministry, has increased. The church board re-evaluated
the total needs of the community and approved a two-step plan of
support. The first phase is an immediate move to a larger facility exclusively
for the use of Palmas Community Church, not just on Sundays but
throughout the year. PCC signed a lease for the second level at the Yacht
Club and will hold its first services on October 31 st . The expanded location
provides dedicated spaces for children’s ministry, nursery, Sunday
school, and adult ministries. PCC has an active women’s study group,
men’s fellowship group, and various small groups serving busy moms,
professionals, and couples. The new location will meet the needs of everyone.
The second phase was the approval of a redesigned 12,000 square
foot church facility. However, the new facility and required support resources
would not fit on the property owned by the church. The board
reached out to Palmas del Mar Properties, Inc. to investigate acquiring
additional land. After listening to the church’s needs and knowing there
was a limited budget, Mr. Charles Hurwitz generously donated the land
adjacent to the PCC parcel, doubling its size. This gracious gift will allow
Palmas Community Church to serve the community’s needs for decades
to come.
PCC has received approval to begin construction on its new facility.
The new church home will not only be a place for worship. It will support
the total pastoral needs of the community and provide for those in need
in times of emergency. The facility will house a food bank, communications
center and provide temporary shelter, showers, and laundry in the
event of natural disasters.

Understanding the
pickleball
These last few months have been of great
benefit to athletes, both for tennis and golf
but especially for Pickleball. When the idea of
building some PickleBall courts in Palmas del
Mar came up, I was a bit confused because I
didn’t really know
what PickleBall
was and how it
originated, so I
started looking for
information about
the game.
I then met
coach Bill Daily,
who shared with
me information
about his knowledge
and experience
in the practice
of Pickleball,
especially here in
Palmas.
Bill explained
“I started playing
on the only court that existed initially. located
in the Villa Franca urbanization in Palmas,
where many people interested in developing
the sport in Palmas used to meet. From that
interest and concern arose the idea of building
Pickleball courts at the Palmas Athletic Club (
PAC)facilities in Palmas. At that moment I said
to myself, “This is the moment I have been waiting
for so long because... I am already in love
with the game!”
The PickleBall courts available are currently
located at the PAC Tennis Center. The activity
has brought on a BIG fever and it’s not going
down! Pickleball draws players from tennis
but also many others looking to try something
new. The players are of all ages and ability levels.
They are describing pickleball as a lot of fun
and a great work out.
Scoring and rules can be a bit complicated
to understand at first. Some of the rules are:
1. The ball must stay within bounds.
2. There must be one bounce per side.
3. The service must be taken at the base
line.
4. The service cannot land on the “no” volley
zone (red zone in front of the net).
5. The game ends in 11, 15 or 21 points,
and only the server can score a point.
Personally, I am impressed and satisfied by
the number of people who are playing pickleball
in Palmas del Mar. It is a great joy to see
how people have a good time, sharing with
friends and family seven days a week at Palmas
Athletic Club (PAC).
Fridays at 5 pm, is the “Dinks and Drinks”
Pickleball gathering directed by coach Bill Daily
and tennis manager Norberto Vargas, which
quickly has become a tradition. Friday’s, the
community comes together to play and watch
their friends and family play and have a good
time. The Volea restaurant enhances the experience
with a table of drinks for the participants
as well as their menu offerings steps away from
the courts. Palmas does it better ! ➤

As the end of the year approaches, we want to revise the insurance needs
of people who live and/or own an apartment in a condo or a walk-up
complex. The basic difference from the people who own houses, is the
property structural coverage. When you buy an apartment the property insurance
you pay for, forms a part of a master policy that covers the whole
building structure. As an apartment owner, there are various insurance
needs regarding your property that need to be taken into consideration.
First, you need to find out the type of master policy your condo has covering
the buildings. It could be Full Value or Barewalls coverage. Full Value
will include everything structural that came originally with your apartment,
so if you made renovations, those will need to be insured separately. If the
master policy is Barewalls, then you need to know about original private
elements. These are all the added furnishings that came originally with
your apartment. Such as: bathtubs, showers, toilets, videts, sinks, vanities,
floor and wall tiles, kitchen cabinets and countertops, closet doors
and shelves, fascias, among others.
The “Barewall” policy covers the buildings (including your apartment)
and common areas of the condominium, but excludes said original privative
elements – so it is the responsibility of each unit owner to insure the
property that is excluded in a Barewall policy.
Your condo’s resident association should have the information on the
value of the original private elements of your apartment. In order for you
to get a quote, you need to know the limit (value in dollars) that you’re
responsible for. Your condo’s association needs to have a valuation done
on the building every two years, and it should include the value of the
original private elements. Also, make sure to ask for the insurance company
name and policy number of the master policy in your condo.
There is a difference between original privative elements and improvements
(renovations). When an owner remodels and makes changes to
the original privative elements, that property must be covered under Additional
Improvements coverage. Let’s say for example that you had your
kitchen cabinets remodeled and changed the floor tiles in your living
room. Those are not considered original anymore and have to be insured
as an additional improvement.
Once you have the value of the original privative elements of your apartment,
and the master policy number and name of the insurance company,
we can offer you a quote for a HO-6 policy, designed specifically for this
purpose, or as an alternative, if you have a personal “package” policy
currently active with us, we can quote you an endorsement covering your
original privative elements with a broader coverage. Please note that both
alternatives above apply as long as your property is located farther than a
thousand feet from the coast line.

Palmas Athletic Club honors “Wimbledon”
and their members with special event
July 9,1877, the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club began the first lawn tennis
tournament. This year, July 11, 2021, PAC and Volea hosted “ Breakfast at Wimbledon”
to celebrate the tradition of the tournament and celebrate the passion of tennis in the
community of Palmas Del Mar.
Players showed up early, dressed in white, ready to play and have some tennis fun. The
courts were filled with rain water, another eerie similarity to a repeat tradition in the
finals of Wimbledon.Anxious to play, all acquired tools, and court was dry for play in 45
minutes time. After a competitive and social round robin, the finalist were surprised with
their “ weapons”, Spalding wooden tennis rackets from “back in the day”. All giggled,
some with a sense of shock, while the players entered center court for the final tiebreaker,
all while the actual Mens Wimbledon Final was blasting in various locations at Volea.
Players filled the tennis centers restaurant Volea, after play, to view the Wimbledon finals,
while imbibing in their refreshing mimosa and special delectable Volea breakfast.
This was a tennis aficionado’ s perfect day, especially for the winners.

The Palmas 2021 Member & Member golf tournament was a
huge success. It was an impressive three-day golf tournament
with 224 players in the midst of a pandemic. All members
presented their vaccination proof or a 48-hour negative test
and it works perfectly. The weather cooperated and even
though it was very hot it didn’t rain until the last day. Both
courses were in top condition and the players were more
than pleased. It was definitely an outstanding tournament!

The number one question I received when I graduated college
was, “What are you going to do now?” I always answered, “ I’m
going back to Puerto Rico.”
Unlike some of my classmates who stayed in the United States, I
decided to come back home. The biggest reason was to be closer
to my family. Although I don’t regret my decision, many people
still ask me why. Why did I come back when I was “living the movie”
in Miami?
Statistically, there is higher number of people living the island
than returning. According to an article in The Weekly Journal,
300,000 Puerto Ricans are projected to leave the island in the next
two years.
But what about the other side of the spectrum? Is there Puerto
Ricans who came back? Will others return after COVID-19?

changed, after spending
a weekend in Puerto
Rico. He took a drive and
was shocked by all the abandoned
properties. Roger felt the run-down
houses had potential that was being
wasted.
“I had a new mission, to rehabilitate
Puerto Rico,” said Fernandez. “I
was always interested in real estate,
so it felt like the right time.”
He got his real estate license and
got to work. During his first four
months, Roger broke the record for
the fastest deal closed at his company
by selling a house in two days.
Roger has also expanded his work
all over the island: Palmas del Mar,
Fajardo, San Juan, Isabela and Mayagüez.
“My goal is to invest, rehabilitate
the island, improve tourism and help
the locals,” said Fernandez.
Roger believes if you work hard,
stay focused and bet on the wellness
of Puerto Rico, anyone can create a
successful life here.
Another Palmas Academy
student who found
her way back to Puerto
Rico is CRISTINA AN-
GELIQUE COLÓN. You
might know her from
the restaurant Cafe de la
Plaza.
Cristina graduated
from The Palmas Academy
in 2005. She then
studied at American
University in Washington DC where
she got a bachelors in communications
and a minor in art studio. In
2009, she decided to move back to
Puerto Rico.
“ I love Puerto Rico,” said Colón. “
It doesn’t matter where I traveled to,
Palmas del Mar is like home to me.”
After moving back, she opened
Cafe de la Plaza with her friend Jay.
Cristina became the youngest restaurant
owner in Palmas at age 21. But

her successful endeavors don’t stop
there.
In 2012, Cristina went to law school.
She attended St. Thomas School of
Law in Miami. Cristina ended up
graduating Cum Laude and passed
the Florida and Washington DC bar.
She then returned a second time
WILLIAM BURN FER-
NANDEZ is another
restaurant entrepreneur
who gained success in
Puerto Rico.
William has a different
story than Rogelio
and Cristina. He lived
in Guatemala, Mexico
and Venezuela during
his childhood. At around
14-years-old, his family
returned to Puerto Rico.
William graduated high school
from Colegio Marista in Guaynabo.
He went to college at the University
of Puerto Rico and graduated with
a bachelor’s degree in Finance. William
then proceeded his studies with
a Master in Finance from the Inter
American University of Puerto Rico.
He got into the industry at age 19,
while still working on his degrees.
William started at Señor Frogs where
he eventually become general manager
at age 22. William attributes his
speedy success to Carlos Gonzalez,
the owner of Señor Frogs. “I was
blessed to have such a great mentor,”
said Burn.
By age 25, William was supervising
various operations for the restaurant
group in the Caribbean. The next
step for William was to have his own
restaurant. He ended up contacting
to her home of Puerto Rico. Now she
has her own consulting firm, Cinmarc
& Associates, L.L.C. and runs Cafe de
la Plaza.
“Puerto Rico is a place for innovators,”
said Colón. “ If you have a
vision and you have imagination, the
island is your oyster.”

“We’ve all seen the
negative documentaries
on burger fast
food joints, on processed meats and
such, said Burn. “ We wanted to design
a burger concept that focuses in
being transparent and detailed.”
And at last, La Burgesia was made!
But they had a few set backs before
they could open the doors to the
public. The pandemic pushed their
opening date over a year. Although
challenging, William and his team
persevered and were able to make it
possible.
William agrees that even though
it’s difficult, working in Puerto Rico
can be the right decision.
“There’s much to re-invent and
innovate on the island,” said Burn.
“There’s also the home court advantage
concept. You know and understand
the market, the competition
and the areas of opportunity.”

RAÚL COSCUL-
LUELA. He was in
charge of the branding
and marketing of
La Burguesia.
For people who
don’t know, Raúl
went to high school
here at The Palmas Academy. He
then attended Marquette University.
Raúl realized his passion for the creative
side of business and transferred
to The School of Visual Arts in New
York City.
After gaining work experience in
the marketing field, he decided to
move back to Puerto Rico during the
pandemic.
“Though the island can sometimes
be a challenge, knowing you’re building
something with roots is much
more gratifying,” said Cosculluela.
Raúl is co-founder of Culture Create,
a creative studio where he designs
experiences for brands, artists
and musicians. Some of his recent visual
collaboration include: Cangrejos
de Santurce Basketball team, Arena
Medalla, and Sunsets Hard Selterz.
Raúl, like the others who came
back, believe Puerto Rico has great
opportunities if you look for them.
“I see Puerto Rico in many ways,
like a blank canvas with a lot of space
for innovation that has a generation
of young entrepreneurs hungry to
achieve big things with the talent to
back it up,” said Cosculluela. ➤

Olga y Orlando estan retirados y viven en Villa Caparra
en Guaynabo. Pero desde 1995 disfrutan de su
propiedad en Crescent Cove, Palmas del Mar, donde

Luz Marina Fajardo80’s
Luz was born in Lanzarote, Canary Islands. She went to
school in Barcelona were she met her husband, Dr. Juan
Ramón Agosto, when he was studying medicine. They
got married and came to live to his hometown, Humacao.
They had five beautiful girls. Both Luz and Mon, were active
members of the golf club from day 1. Nineteen years
ago they moved to Palmas del Mar and when her husband
passed away, she stayed here surrounded by friends
that were like family.
Luz is described by her friends as a happy, active person
full of love and energy. As Virgie said, her name Luz
means light and that is what she gives us constantly. We
wish her many more years of health, good golf and time
to share with her dear friends! And yes, believe it or not
she just turn 80! ➤

El origen de la raza de Paso Fino se remonta a más de 500 años, a
la época de la Conquista, cuando los españoles comenzaron a traer
caballos al Caribe; un equino que llegó a Puerto Rico y con el tiempo
evolucionó, adaptándose a la topografía de la Isla y desarrollando un

andar tan particular que lo distinguió y atrajo la atención de los dueños de estos
corceles.
En aquellos tiempos, los caballos se utilizaban como animal de trabajo y transporte;
pero aparte de ese uso utilitario general, un grupo de hacendados comenzó
a encastar, criar y seleccionar a estos equinos que tenían un paso especialmente
cómodo a la hora de montar, con características específicas: balanceado, cadencioso,
andar en cuatro tiempos, paso rítmico, rápido y reunido.
En el Siglo XVIII, este tipo de caballo se comenzó a exhibir en Ferias Patronales o
Ferias de Pueblo, atrayendo con su elegante pisar la admiración del público caballista.
Con el paso de los años, las exhibiciones dieron lugar a las competencias. Ese
fino andar que los distinguía fue ganando tal popularidad que originó el nombre
de “Paso Fino”, mencionado por primera vez en documentos de 1850.
El nombre “Paso Fino” se popularizó tanto en el último medio siglo, que trascendió
las fronteras y actualmente también se utiliza en otros países para designar
las razas equinas cuyos andares en “cuatro tiempos laterales” son parecidos al del
caballo de Paso Fino Puro Puertorriqueño, como Colombia, Venezuela, el Caribe,
Estados Unidos y países de Europa, entre ellos, España, Alemania, Francia y Suiza.
Padre de Raza: Ejemplar “Dulce Sueño”
En 1930 comenzó a ganar fama, por encima de todos los demás, un caballo que
por sus características sobresalientes se convirtió
en modelo y ejemplo de excelencia de la raza de
Paso Fino Puro Puertorriqueño, el ejemplar “Dulce
Sueño” (1927-1941) del pueblo de Guayama, en
Puerto Rico. Su dueño fue Don Genaro Cautiño y su
montador Don Eusebio Massó.
Creación de la Federación del
Deporte de Caballos de Paso Fino
Durante la década de 1930 y 1940 se generó en
el país un “boom” de ejemplares de Paso Fino de excelencia, que surgieron a raíz
del campeón “Dulce Sueño”; y así se sentaron las bases para la creación de una
entidad que agrupara al gran número de nuevos criadores.
La historia del Paso Fino moderno tiene como pilares de su desarrollo al ejemplar
Dulce Sueño y a la Federación, fundada el 21 de marzo de 1943 con el nombre
de “Asociación de Dueños de Caballos de Silla de Puerto Rico”.
Más de 70 años impulsando el Paso Fino 2013 fue el año del 70 Aniversario
de la Federación que desde hace más
de siete décadas ha celebrado ininterrumpidamente
competencias de
Paso Fino y Equitación en toda la Isla,
promoviendo la crianza de esta raza
única.
El Deporte del Paso Fino, según la
LEY No. 87 de 1978, fue denominado
como “Deporte Autóctono de Puerto
Rico”.

Anthony is a retired CPA,
golf player, member of
the Palmas Athletic Club

painter. He has painted
more than 250 paintings
in the last 11 years, but
this exposition, held at
our PAC Club House and
hosted by Chez Daniel at the Club, is for a
very special cause--PECES program at the Humacao
Beach. All the sales will be donated in
full to this wonderful organization captained
by a wonderful woman called Sister Nancy
and Mr. José Oquendo, PECES President.
Anthony Cruz, has been linked to PEC-
ES for the last six years, where he served
as treasurer of the Board of Director.
During the last 3 years he has been a

LETTER
At the closing of this edition, that runs until December, I realized that the year is ending and we are
soon going to celebrate two years of the pandemic. No one could have told us, in the beginning, that
we were going to spend two years of our lives (and we do not know how much longer) in this situation.
A pandemic that has uncovered many fears, anxieties and has clearly shown us how fragile we are in
the face nature. This year we have also had to face the brutal onslaught of Sargasso that reaches our
coasts, in addition to obvious coastal erosion; complex problems that are not that easy to solve as
some may think. The root of the problem is in the deforestation of the forests of Africa and the Amazon,
which causes soil erosion, which in turn causes an excess of nutrients to reach the oceans and causes
an overproduction of the seaweed known as Sargasso. Sargasso not only ugly for our beaches, but it is
killing marine life - corals, fish etc. But, what can we do? We can do our part by supporting ecological
and environmental conservation initiatives. We can, for example, eliminate plastics from our lives (at
least reduce them to a minimum). Do not use straws, do not use disposable plastic cups, do not drink
water from plastic bottles (which after all you do not know how they are produced or the hours that they
spend in the sun and heat when transported). The water in Palmas is very good because it comes from
the Río Blanco tributary of El Yunque. For more than a year I have always kept in my purse a
set of cutlery and I never accept disposable cutlery (which are also so unpleasant to eat
with). I bought a large thermos and fill it in the morning with ice and water and I
spend the whole day with it. I recycle all organic material with a super garbage
dispenser because I know that this will be collected by PDMU to mix with our
organic compost to fertilize our gardens. If you have a patio, plant trees, do
not buy plastic containers, reuse the containers of yogurt, butter, etc. If
we all do our part and raise awareness, we may save the planet. I
have faith that this pandemic has given us time to reflect, now it’s
time take action. ➤
