UJF Features Honest Tea Founder
Young Israel Celebrates
Mother’s Day
Zoom participants listen to Barry Nalebuff.
United Jewish Federation’s Rothchild
Society participants heard from Barry
Nalebuff, professor at Yale University,
author of seven books, and founder
of Honest Tea. Nalebuff talked about
fair negotiation, which he highlights
in his book, “Split the Pie: A Radical
New Way to Negotiate (Based On the
Talmud).” The book will be out in the
spring of 2022.
Nalebuff discussed his concept of
negotiating both life situations and
business deals in a fair, equitable, and
more principled way to come to an outcome
that is proportional, no matter
who may be the larger or stronger entity.
“The pie frame reveals a fundamental
symmetry of power and leads to the
radical conclusion that the pie should
be divided evenly. The fundamental
idea can be traced back 2,000 years to
the Talmud,” says Nalebuff.
The Rothschild Society is a United
Jewish Federation business affinity
group, providing educational and informative
programming and networking
opportunities to the local Jewish
community.
“We hope to offer in-person and
outdoor programs in the near future,
which will provide a more social element,
and the opportunity to network
in person,” says Sharon Franklin, Managing
Director of Campaign and Community
Engagement.
gathered at Young Israel of Stamford to
learn Torah and to enjoy beautiful weather,
delicious food, fun games and creative arts
and crafts. In celebration of Mother’s Day,
participants learned about women’s and
girls’ power to draw on the holiness of their
Talia Siscovick and her daughters.
mothers and women leaders of the past and
present, and to bring those messages of
strength and perseverance toward an even
greater future.
Bi-Cultural Students Create Oral
Histories with Jewish Historical Society
(Courtesy of BCHA) Bi-Cultural
Hebrew Academy Social
Studies teacher, Erin Hupal, together
with the Jewish Historical
Society of Fairfield County,
created an Oral History Project
unit she knew would be perfect
for her eighth graders. With the
help of the Historical Society’s
Elissa Kaplan and others, they
came up with a plan to launch
the program at the school.
“With each passing day the
opportunity to learn from the
previous generation shrinks,”
says Ms. Hupal. “Recording their oral
histories is a treasure for us and future
generations.”
Five weeks after conceiving the project,
Ms. Kaplan and her colleagues taught
students about oral histories and how to
Bi-Cultural teacher Erin Hupal assists eighth grader
Lilah Gordon with her Oral History project.
complete oral histories for their families.
Soon they will take their place in the Society’s
archive.
Says eighth grader Lilah Gordon,
“Learning about our past is very important
because it’s a part of who we are and it
helps us find our way in the future.”
