ARCHITECTURE
New Titles & Highlights Jan–Jun 2022
Dear friend and bookseller
Well, nearly two years in and none of us are entirely out of the
woods yet!
However and thankfully, despite all the problems being faced by
everyone around the world, the globe has not stopped turning
and books still keep being published.
And good books too! In this edition of the SaltWay catalogue, we
are delighted to welcome on board Wild Things Publishing who’s
Wild Guides to walking, swimming, cycling and adventuring, in
Europe and elsewhere, are hugely successful and imaginatively
designed.
We are also delighted that Crane Books are also now with SaltWay
and their delightfully repackaged classic children’s titles, from
the hugely celebrated illustrator Daryl Stevenson, will surely thrill
many young minds.
And from all our other wonderful and carefully curated client
publishers there is yet more fascinating, unique, engaging,
informative and charming new titles in which we very much hope
you find real interest.
To help our customer buyers, who may favour working from an
electronic platform, we also provide our catalogues in PDF format
which come embedded with live links to title covers, content and
indeed complete texts.
If you do not already receive PDF copies from us, please just
request from me at: chris.mclaren@saltway.co.uk.
Hoping to help further, Advance Information Sheets, SaltWay
Client Publisher Catalogues, Covers, Spreads and Full Texts can
all be viewed and downloaded via our website at: https://www.
saltway-global.co.uk/current-catalogues
Many of you will have heard that our principal partner distributor,
Marston-Orca (now part of UID), are in process of re-organising
their warehouse portfolio. This will mean SaltWay client
publishers will be moving to a new, bespoke distribution centre
in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, UK shortly. This will bring about
additional efficiencies and help improve further customer service.
Of course, COVID issues combined with ongoing Brexit-related
problems, within distribution services as a whole, continues to
bring considerable extra pressure on service and your patience
here, whilst the situation persists, is much appreciated.
We very much hope that many of you will be able to travel again
soon and visit us at the London Book Fair where SaltWay will have
a stand as usual.
Meanwhile, we sincerely hope that each and every one of you is
safe and well.
With best wishes
Chris McLaren
issues, clarifying what happened
between 1946 and 1963 in
Iraq and Syria: how and why a
parliamentary system prevailed
in both countries in the aftermath
system triggered, and, in turn,
how these changes affected the
system; finally, why the elites in
both countries were unable to
both a liberal era and a certain
kind of political game.
[2] [3]
my current practice includes sketching with
pen and ink, making marks and teasing out a sense of
the chosen study. From here, model making, specifically
for any larger armatures, that then will require problem
solving and fabricating. The final skin and texture of the
sculpture is woven onto a steel frame, often one stem at
time, suggesting the movement and sinuous lines of the
original sketch.
This process is almost meditative and very time
consuming, selecting the appropriate stems and
intuitively creating tension in the form. Techniques that
I have developed over the last twenty years. Willow has
its own character with evocative qualities. Through time
an understanding of this develops, which together with a
bundle of patience, are all woven into the final creation.
My sculptures have been described as ‘woven
observations’, largely scaling and magnifying details
found in the natural landscape. Wildflowers are a
wonderful source of inspiration, each with its own
unique character. From stem, leaf to flower, then finally
seed head and dispersal, they are often identified by
common names and referred to in folklore with a hint
of magic! The goat’s beard has all these qualities and to
witness this in a meadow at eye level is spectacular, and
yet often overlooked. So, a sculpture scaled fifteen times
larger in willow, can draw attention, and celebrate these
smaller details.
Goat’s beard is a very attractive wildflower – it has a
wonderfully fluid form that lends itself to the malleable
qualities of willow. Whilst researching this plant before
starting to sketch I found that it has a very unusual trait
of opening its flowers at daybreak but quickly closing
14 m e adow
them again before noon giving rise to its other common
name of ‘jack-go-to-bed-at-noon’. Goat’s beard is a
classic biennial plant, producing only a rosette in the first
growing year and completing its life cycle by flowering
and setting seed in the second – the stunning seed ‘clock’
is well worth the wait. Once the sculpture has settled
into the landscape it will mellow over time, reflecting the
ephemeral nature of this charming little plant.
[image 2] The flower head is of willow presents an artist with
surrounded by very distinctive endless opportunities
bracts, but it can still elude sleepyheaded
botanists because it only the elongated buds lend themselves
[image 5] The vessel-like form of
blooms in the early morning. to traditional basket weaving
[image 3] Goat’s beard is also techniques.
This forest of arches in the Mezquita at Córdoba captures the visual
drama of a city which, in the 10th century, became the prosperous
capital of an important caliphate. Bu the architectural reference to
oriental aesthetics glosses over the fact tha this one-time grand
mosque was later converted into a Roman Catholic cathedral. Visit
Córdoba as part of Routes 13 or 14 (photo © Bjeayes).
Sofia
After a five-year gap, Sofia makes a welcome return to Europe by
Rail. It features on Route 48, newly created for the 15th edition of
the book. Riding the 14 tram routes which criss-cross the city is a
fine way of taking the pulse of Sofia life (photo © Tupungato).
Hamburg
Lviv has been under Habsburg, Polish and Soviet control. Today it is
part of Ukraine and the end point of Routes 26, 49 and 53. This is the
eastern side of the main market square, with a fine mix of Rococo and
Renaissance architecture. In 1998, the square was inscribed on UNESCO’s
World Heritage List (photo © Tainar).
Countries covered: Germany (DE), Czech Republic (CZ), Slovakia (SK), Hungary (HU)
Journey time: 13 hrs 45 mins | Distance: 1,291 km
The rail journey from Hamburg to Budapest can be completed in a long
day. The sole direct service between the two cities takes just under 14 hours
for a journey of about 1,300 km. It rea ly does take in four capital cities in a
day. Travel all the way through if you will, but the great majority of travellers
will stop off en route, usually at one or more of the following cities: Berlin,
Dresden, Prague or Bratislava. On this journey from the banks of the Elbe
to the Danube, there is a strong sense of swapping the cultural realm of
northern Europe for that of Mi teleuropa (Central Europe).
Trains over this entire route run at least every two hours throughout
the day. So, if you do break your journey along the way, you’ l find a wide
choice of onward services.
Fast track alternatives
If you are in a hurry to get from Hamburg to Budapest, there is an alternative route which
track south through western Germany to Bavaria, and then continues through Austria to
Vienna and beyond. It gives a slightly faster journey time, but always requires a change of
trains along the way (normally at Vienna).
Bear in mind, too, that there are overnight po sibilities covering parts of this route.
There is a nightly sleeper service from Hamburg to Vienna (from where it’s just a short hop
on to Budapest in the morning). A happy innovation for 2019 has been the reinstatement
of the direct nigh train from Berlin to Bratislava and Budapest.
The Hungaria
The direc train from Hamburg to Budapest is a Eurocity service called the
Hungaria. It has run from Berlin to Budapest for over half a century; only
in late 2015 was it extended to start from Hamburg. Cast back to the Cold
War days, and the Hungaria carried East German families off for summer
holidays in Hungary — where Lake Balaton was a favourite destination. It
was also the train tha transported government officials and party stalwarts
carrying fraternal greetings between the Warsaw Pact capitals. The Hungaria
was much favoured by spies too. In the 1980s, it sti l carried through carriages
from Sweden to Yugoslavia, both non-aligned countries, and the train was
a good spot for discreet exchanges of intelligence as i trundled through the
central European countryside.
The Europe traversed by the Hungaria has been u terly transformed
over the last 30 years. The Iron Curtain has gone and borders have
melted. That’s not to say that you’ l necessarily be able to travel from
Berlin to Budapest without once being asked to show your passport. In
the northbound direction this rail route is one that has been much used in
Willow artist
I was first drawn to willow as a creative
material for its spontaneity. The ability to
manipulate its long slender stems into all
manner of shapes and forms, with instant
results contrasted to my earlier experiences
when I used other mediums to express my
creative thoughts. Some years on, the scent of
drying willow fills the workshop each spring
to punctuate the year, as the stems season
from their winter cut green state. Willow is a
truly remarkable plant, a perfect example of a
sustainable material.
Meadows are a fantastic place to see an
abundance of wildflowers, insects, birds and
other wildlife. However, they’re not as wild
as you might think; they’re an ancient part of
our farming landscape that has evolved from
the need to produce hay to feed to livestock.
Haymaking is the reason that meadows exist,
but, as the saying goes, they don’t make it like
they used to. The sweet scent of good hay is
evocative of my childhood spent around farm
and stable. So, it was a natural choice to opt for
haymaking on floodplain meadows as the focus
for my PhD research.
Naguib Mahfouz’s novel was first
published in Egypt in 1959. It has
been at times banned, sold under
the counter, often pirated and
only recently legally reprinted. It
dogged Mahfouz like a curse, led
to his attempted assassination,
and sparked a lasting public
debate. Mohamed Shoair traces
the story of the novel from
first publication to the present
