Stu Swartz

Gold Circle Honoree

During his nearly 60 years in the television business, Stu Swartz has become

known as an accomplished leader, innovative programmer, and devoted

community member. Leading KMSP-TV in Minneapolis/St. Paul for

decades, Swartz impacted the Upper Midwest Region through successful

programming, a commitment to local news, community involvement,

and mentorship of team members.

After starting his career in advertising and promotion at KMSP, he moved

to sales and was eventually promoted to General Manager of the station.

Swartz’s 20-year tenure as General Manager of KMSP began during a seismic shift in the Minnesota

broadcasting landscape as the longtime ABC affiliate had recently been dropped by the

network and became an independent station. While many predicted its demise, under Swartz’s

leadership KMSP became the #1 independent station in the country, and jumped from the number

four revenue-producing station in the market to number two.

While delivering exceptional ratings and financial performance were important accomplishments

for Swartz at KMSP, his commitment to employees and the community were notable. Swartz hired

the first female account executive in the Minneapolis/St. Paul market who became the first female

general sales manager in the Twin Cities. Under his leadership, KMSP became the first television

station to have a person of color co-anchor the news. Swartz took a deep interest in the lives of his

employees and was gratified to have very low turnover in direct managers.

News and Community involvement were hallmarks of Swartz’s tenure at KMSP. He expanded local

news coverage from 30 minutes to 1 hour on weekdays, launched a morning news show, and

became the first independent station in the country to launch an evening news program against

network affiliate competitors. KMSP produced political debates for Mayor, Governor, and Senate

races while hosting many public affairs shows. Swartz brought many hours of local sports to Minnesotans

televising games from the Twins, North Stars, Wild, Kicks, Gophers, and High School Sports

League. Swartz co-chaired a committee with the Attorney General of Minnesota to regulate Truth

in Advertising, and was on the Boards of the Midwest Better Business Bureau and the Minnesota

Ad Club. Swartz also served as Chairman of ALTV, a national organization representing hundreds

of television stations and each of the major movie studios in lobbying efforts in Washington DC.

Additionally, Swartz served on the original Board of Governors for the FOX Television Network.

Upon leaving KMSP after nearly 40 years, Swartz started Stuart Consulting where clients included

Hubbard Broadcasting stations KSTP and KSTC and Red River Broadcasting stations KQDS in

Duluth, KVRR in Fargo/Moorhead, and KDLT in Sioux Falls. Swartz also helped negotiate broadcasting

contracts for the Minnesota High School League and Minnesota Wild.

Swartz’s connection to the Upper Midwest chapter of the Television Academy runs deep. While

General Manager of KMSP, Swartz helped start the chapter when it separated from the Chicago

region. His father Don was honored in the first class of Upper Midwest Silver Circle members in

2000.

Swartz lives in the Twin Cities with his wife, Susie.

CONGRATULATIONS TO

Bill Hudson

Silver Circle Honoree

From your friends and colleagues at WCCO

Bill Hudson

Silver Circle Honoree

By convention Bill Hudson should have been a print journalist. His small

town childhood was largely spent hanging around the local newspaper

office, where both his father and grandfather worked. Instead, the Elk

River native took a slightly different path. It was the summer of 1973, and

he was mesmerized by network coverage of the Watergate hearings.

Television journalism became his calling.

Claire, Wisconsin.

After graduating St. Cloud State University, Hudson interned at WC-

CO-TV in Minneapolis where he met producer, John Hoffland. Their paths

would cross again, a year later, with Hudson’s first job at WEAU-TV in Eau

“It was the greatest possible start to a gratifying career,” Hudson recalls. Despite the meager pay

of small market television, salary was supplanted with learning. “Things would have been tough

had it not been for my wife Julie’s nursing job,” he chuckles. Hoffland became his first news director,

laying a solid foundation. John was the ultimate teacher to this young, green talent. He

instilled the elements of clear, concise writing, the lure of unique characters and the beauty of

pairing words with pictures.

Three years later, Bill and Julie packed up and headed to WITI-TV in Milwaukee. He’d hone his

skills covering politics and environmental issues. He was sent to cover the 1984 Democratic National

Convention in San Francisco and 1988 DNC in Atlanta. In 1986, with newborn daughter Ellen

at home, Hudson spent the summer traversing the country. As much of the nation was gripped in

drought, Hudson produced an award winning national documentary series for all Storer Broadcast

stations, “Water, The Great Divide.”

By spring of 1989, it was time to fulfill his ultimate dream. Although it was difficult leaving close

friends and colleagues, the pull of returning to Minnesota was powerful. WCCO-TV was the station

he’d grown up watching, home to legendary anchor Dave Moore, acclaimed documentaries

and investigative reports - and countless network correspondents.

Back then, ‘CCO was like its own mini-network. Hudson was given a constant flow of national and

international assignments. In fact his first reporting duty sent him to Chicago to cover a national

student protest over the Chinese crackdown at Tiananmen Square. He’d do a 6 p.m. live shot from

Navy Pier then catch a flight home.

It didn’t stop. Later that summer came the tragic crash of United Flight 232 in an Iowa cornfield.

A short while later, the couple’s second daughter, Anna was born and it seemed dad was still never

home. A packed bag was always under his newsroom desk, as he never knew if he’d be home that

night. Other assignments included Hurricane Andrew, National Guard missions to Bosnia, Panama

and Honduras, California wildfires, the Branch Davidian tragedy in Waco, Texas and visiting Gulf

War soldiers in Saudi Arabia.

For 20 years Hudson served colleagues as their SAG/AFTRA shop steward, negotiating contracts

and solving union issues. His retirement in September 2020 enabled him and Julie to provide daycare

to their grandsons during the height of Covid-19.

This past May, Hudson joined daughter Ellen O’Brien as consultant and trainer for her new company,

Hudsons Media and has enjoyed the chance to slow down and spend more time with family.

Monica Hannan

Silver Circle Honoree

Monica Hannan has never met a story she didn’t want to tell. It’s what

led her into the world of journalism, and it’s what has inspired her along a

path of lifelong learning.

With Bachelor of Arts degrees in History and Mass Communications in

hand, she set off for her first broadcast job at KUMV in Williston, N.D., in

1982 and though her path took her away from the Peace Garden State to

a television station in Idaho for a time, she returned to North Dakota in

1988 and has anchored the number-one rated 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts at KFYR-TV in Bismarck

ever since, although she has never been one to let the grass grow under her.

Between 2004 and 2015 she served as News Director at KFYR, winning three Upper Midwest

Regional Emmy® Awards for Outstanding Newscast while still anchoring evening newscasts. She

has been named “Best Anchor” by the North Dakota Broadcaster’s Association three times and

has also been a 10-time winner of Eric Severeid Awards for her reporting and writing.

She has been active in the broadcast industry, serving as a board member for the Radio and Television

News Directors Association from 2010 through 2015, and a North Dakota Regional Vice

President for the Upper Midwest Emmy® Chapter Board of Governors. Monica has been involved

in her community as well, volunteering and serving as a board member for The GOD’S CHILD Project,

Catholic Charities North Dakota, The American Heart Association, Bismarck State College

Communications Advisory Board, Bismarck Historical Society, and most recently was named to

the Tepeyac Leadership Institute of Arizona Central Board of Directors.

Monica has authored five books, with three of those titles selling more than 20,000 copies, and

one of which has been optioned for a feature film by Lightworks Pictures.

In addition to anchoring the news, Monica spent several years as a talk show host for North Dakota

Today, and First at Four, and is a frequent keynote speaker on topics both inspirational and

humorous.

She currently serves as Managing Editor at KFYR-TV. She anchors First News at Five, and co-anchors

The Evening Report at 6 and The Night Report at 10.

She holds a Master of Arts degree in Management from the University of Mary in Bismarck, and a

Master of Arts degree in Theology from the Augustine Institute in Denver.

She is married to Cliff Naylor and they have three children.

Retirements

Bob Bosse

Director of Programming

South Dakota Public Broadcasting

Bob joined SDPB in late 1998 as an Associate Producer. From that starting point,

Bosse became producer and in 2002 was named Director of Television. He is

retiring as Director of Programming for the statewide public broadcasting network. Prior to working

for South Dakota Public Broadcasting he worked in commercial TV in production and promotion

roles. He and his wife, Sherrie - a Professor at the University of South Dakota - are retiring and

moving to Mexico. No more snow for these folks!

Dave Jensch

Vice President and General Manager

KBJR/KDLH

Dave Jensch retired from KBJR and CBS3 in 2021 after a career which started with

an internship and closed with him as Vice President and General Manager of the

competing stations that share a building in Canal Park in Duluth, MN. Jensch graduated from St.

Cloud State in 1978 and went to Duluth for what he thought would be a two-year job. It became a

career covering the Northern Minnesota & Wisconsin.

Jensch’s first big story was of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the legislation in

1978 that brought added acreage, mining protection, restrictions on motor boats and

snowmobiles and more to the area. In 1992, Jensch was the first reporter on the scene when a train

derailed and spilled benzene — creating an ominous vapor cloud which caused evacuation of both

Duluth and Superior. Jensch was also involved in the 1993 coverage of Flight 5719, the Northwest

Airlink flight from MSP to International Falls Airport which crashed in Hibbing killing the 18 people.

In 1997, a fire destroyed the KBJR studios. Jensch was News Director at the time and

instrumental in helping crews find a way to keep a signal on the air and rebuild a station which

burned to the ground. Jensch became General Manager in 2004 and was instrumental in the acquisition

of KDLH and moving its studios and crews into the same building with KBJR.

Every year, we attempt. to recognize individuals with at least 20 years of work in the chapter who

may have retired or passed away in the past year. This year, we’re honoring those who retired or

passed away between Sept. 1, 2020 and August 31st, 2021.

Tonight’s Hosts

Sheletta Brundidge is an Emmy Award-winning

comedian, podcaster and beloved media personality.

Sheletta has been featured in People magazine and USA

Today and has appeared on Good Morning America, The

Tamron Hall Show, The Steve Harvey Show, and The Ellen

DeGeneres Show.

She can be heard on WCCO Radio on “The Sheletta Show.”

You can also hear her on one of the two podcasts she hosts

on SHElettaMakesMeLaugh.com, the podcasting platform she founded and created to celebrate

Black culture.

Tane Danger is a host, interviewer, producer, and

comedian.

He is the co-founder and host of the nationally renowned

civics-inspired improv comedy show, The Theater of Public

Policy. At each show, Tane interviews newsmakers and big

thinkers live on stage, usually over a beer. Then the show’s

cast of improv comedians takes everything that’s been said

and turns it into entirely unscripted improv comedy theater.

The result is what the Star Tribune described as “C-SPAN

invaded by the cast of SNL.” The show has produced more than 500 programs since it started in

2011, earning praise from both audiences and publications from Forbes Magazine to Roll Call.

Tane is also the director of the Westminster Town Hall Forum; the midwest’s largest and most

prestigious speaker’s series. Founded in 1980, the Forum has hosted lectures by more than 300

national-level speakers, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel, Maya Angelou, Gwen

Ifill, and Vice President Al Gore, just to name a few.

Tane regularly appears on the Twin Cities Public Television program Almanac, providing colorful

essays on politics and life in Minnesota.

Even with all those credits to his name, Tane is probably best known for his webseries with Metro

Transit, “Hey! Where Does This Bus Go?” In each episode, Tane rides a Twin Cities bus route from

start to finish, chatting with riders, cracking jokes, singing songs, and noting landmarks along the

way.

2021 Upper Midwest Emmy ® Awards

22nd Annual National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences

Upper Midwest Regional Emmy ® Awards

Welcome to tonight’s gala and good luck to all our Regional Emmy ® Nominees! It’s great to be

back together again to celebrate the excellence in television and video production in the Upper

Midwest.

The past year has had its ups and downs, and you’ve been there to cover it all. You’ve continued to

adapt to change, both at work and in your personal life.

Speaking of change, tonight’s awards ceremony marks my last event as Awards Chair and member

of the Upper Midwest chapter. I embarked on a new journey this summer and found my way to

Florida. While I’m still working in television, I’m excited to trade in my snow shovel for flip flops and

sunscreen!

I’m leaving you in the capable hands of Brian Wagner, who has been an integral part of our board

and previous awards ceremonies.

It has been my honor to be board member since 2012 and serve as Awards Chair over the last three

years. I will always be a fan of your work from afar.

Sincerely,

Vanessa Lambert

Thank you Vanessa for your dedication and leadership to the Upper Midwest Chapter. We wish

you continued success in your new journey!

It is an honor to the be the next Awards Chair for the Upper Midwest Emmy ® Chapter. My career

started as a production assistant at KEYC-TV in Mankato. Continuing on to Hi-Wire, Hodder, TPT

and currently partnering with my wife, Melissa, at Wagner Designs.

The Upper Midwest Emmy ® Chapter always has great work being created. Tonight, we honor and

celebrate our nominees!

The Upper Midwest Emmy ® Awards is not a race nor a game where the highest score wins. All

entries are judged on a “Standard of Excellence” based on three criteria: content, creativity and

execution. If you’ve judged other chapter’s entries, you know judges watch and score each entry

on its own merits and do not judge them against other entries. Judges decide whether each

2021 Upper Midwest Emmy ® Awards

21

singular entry is award-worthy or not. There may be one award, more than one award or no awards

in any given category.

The Upper Midwest Emmy ® Chapter Awards Committee would like to thank our colleagues across

the region who helped judge our 2021 Student Production Award entries, as well as Regional

Emmy® entries from the Nashville Mid-South, Central Great Lakes, Rocky Mountain Southwest,

New York, Boston New England & Ohio Valley chapters.

More than 200 colleagues judged about 1,000 entries from those regions over the past year.

Many judged more than one category/panel. We sincerely appreciate the time and dedication

these volunteers gave our chapter to maintain the judging “Standard of Excellence” which is vital

to the integrity of the awards.

Our chapter gets nearly 1,000 entries a year from you, yet we are in the midst of a judging

shortage. Take a look at these numbers:

2021 Upper Midwest Emmy® Entrants & Judging Stats

• Total entrants (names) listed on all entries: 2,373

• Total UNIQUE entrants: 983

• Members: 656

• Non-Members: 327

• Entrants who judged 229

• Percent of entrants who judged: 23%

For every category you enter, 6-8 people are required to judge it. This is why we require our

chapter members and those listed on entries to judge at least two panels a year.

Plus, if you judge two panels, you earn a $50 discount on each of your entries next year! Any

judging from now until June 2022 will count toward next year’s judging requirement.

Please email info@midwestemmys.org to volunteer. Judging entries is completely online and

done at your own convenience. It’s also a great way to see new content from your colleagues

across the country, get ideas for your broadcasts, and gain insight on how to prepare future entries.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the show!

2021 Upper Midwest Emmy® Foundation

Classroom Grant Recipient

Western Iowa Tech CC • Zoom Cart Grant

The WITCC Mass Comm department was started in the fall of 2011, with the first classes for students

enrolled in the Audio Engineering degree track. The Video and Media Production degree

track was established in the Fall of 2016, and Multimedia Journalism started in the fall of 2018.

Over the last 10 years, WITCC Mass Comm has had great success with students and graduates

working as concert technical crew and AV technicians at several venues in the Midwest, as well

as Florida, North Carolina, Arizona and Colorado, as well as reporters, news and commercial producers,

photographers, directors, audio engineers and production crew at radio and television

stations in Northwest and Central Iowa, Southeast South Dakota and Northeast Nebraska.

Our program is grounded in experiential learning – with all curriculum presented in a hands-on

environment as realistic as it can be. Students present a daily morning newscast Monday –

Thursday and a longer show on Friday. Students have also had a generous amount of real-world

experiences including doing election night coverage and producing candidate forums that aired

from our studio over the local ABC affiliate, KCAU-TV.

Students recently completed two days of live production on the College’s bi-annual staff development

sessions, originating them from our studio with very positive response from the audience

of faculty, staff and administration. In addition to speakers and hosts from the studio, 18

pieces of original student work were presented.

Our students are currently in the process of planning the production of several TEDx presentations

that will originate from our campus in April of this year, as well as a live music program from

the television studio and the production and live streaming of our graduation ceremonies in May.

In a time of social distancing, the program also worked to live stream a “virtual graduation” last

spring and also live streamed pinning ceremonies for our Allied Health program, allowing friends

and family members to see and recognize the success of their students. Students also have recorded

the college’s Law Enforcement graduation for those who were unable to attend.

The faculty, staff, administration and especially the students of the Western Iowa Tech Mass

Comm department would like to sincerely thank the Upper Midwest Chapter for their generous

classroom grant. We will be using these funds to build a “Zoom Cart” that will facilitate the production

of live interviews over Zoom and other streaming conference avenues that will further

allow us to emulate how the current broadcast industry has adapted to the challenges of live

production during COVID.

Scholarship Recipient

BOB FRANSEN LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

Madeline Hamilton – University of Northern Iowa

Madeline (Maddie) Hamilton is from Oskaloosa, Iowa and grew up in the performing

arts programs there. Maddie is a freshman at the University of Northern

Iowa where she studies digital journalism and theatre with a performance

emphasis.

Within the digital journalism and theatre major Maddie enjoys working and

discovering new ways to express herself and art forms. Growing up, she discovered

VICE journalism and would watch their documentaries through the night.

Maddie says her parents saw her passions and pushed her to chase that fire.

Recently, Maddie explored and expanded her interests even more through podcasting and DJing

at radio stations. She loves this because it supports her ultimate goal of sharing others stories.

Additionally, Maddie enjoys creating short films and producing original stories usually, with eerie

twists and strong themes. “I also love having the ability to tell stories that bring awareness to important

topics in society. One of my most driven aspirations is creating a voice for more women in

the digital media industry. Oftentimes women in the media are looked at in a negative light, but

this needs to change. Us women have important things to say, and even better things to show the

audience. My hope is to eventually ignite a fire in another preteen watching documentaries at

3am. Ultimately, I hope my work inspires others as much as activism, storytelling, and journalism

has inspired me.”

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences - Upper Midwest Chapter and its Foundation is proud

to support the next generations of media content creators. This 501 (c) 3 non-profit Foundation (Fed. Tax

ID# 20-1848994) provides scholarships and classroom grants to high school and college media students

and programs across our region of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa & western Wisconsin.

Since 2002, the NATAS-UMW Foundation has awarded 87 scholarships worth $203,000 to regional

students who want to study video media production or video journalism in college.

In 2017, we started a Classroom Grant program for local educators. Since then, the

Upper Midwest Emmy® Foundation has provided 6 grants totaling nearly $11,000 to

local schools for classroom media equipment.

Governors Emmy ® Award

The National Academy of Television Arts & Science (NATAS) – Upper Midwest Governors Emmy ® Award is the most

prestigious Regional Emmy ® Award in our chapter. It is voted on by solely by the Board of Governors representing all

media markets & platforms within our region.

The Governor’s Emmy ® Award honors visionary, long-standing relationships that creatively and effectively use corporate,

non-profit and broadcast resources to showcase the power of broadcasting to advance a mission or message.

The award is presented to a broadcaster, advertiser or company, as well as a non-profit organization, each of whom

has contributed to forward a cause.

COVID-19 Vaccines: Finding Answers

WDSE•WRPT, CBS 3, KBJR 6, WDIO, KQDS Fox 21, Duluth News Tribune

All of Duluth’s TV stations and the Duluth News Tribune partnered in an all-day “roadblock” to

inform the region’s residents about the COVID-19 vaccine. The goal was to let people know where

and when they could get vaccinated, the safety of the various vaccines and other vaccine hesitancy

concerns and answer more of their COVID-19 questions.

Whether it is safe to get vaccinated if you have an underlying health condition or learning about

the differences between the available vaccinations, people had plenty of questions. Coverage

also focused on underserved/at risk communities and BIPOC citizens.

As the Northland organized for the next chapter in the fight against COVID-19, Duluth media outlets

teamed up for a day-long effort called “COVID-19 Vaccines: Finding Answers”. On Wednesday,

February 24th, CBS 3, KBJR 6, WDIO, KQDS Fox 21 and WDSE•WRPT along with the Duluth

News Tribune featured health experts and advice throughout the day on-air and online.

The media partners worked with regional health experts from St. Louis County Public Health, Essentia

Health, St. Luke’s, Fairview Range in Hibbing, Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital, Community

Memorial Hospital in Cloquet, Carlton County Public Health and the University of Minnesota

Medical School, Duluth Campus to pull together this all-day media blanket coverage.

The effort culminated in an hour-long live WDSE•WRPT special at 7 pm, hosted by WDSE’s Dennis

Anderson featuring local health experts and stories produced by each media outlet. The special

was broadcast on WDSE•WRPT’s PBS North channel and was also streamed online on all the

partner’s social media sites.
