Duets
art exhibition by Edna Vida and Nonoy Froilan
“Duets” brings together two renowned artists Edna Vida and Nonoy
Froilan in a duo exhibition that explores interaction and connection
through painting and photography. Partners in real life, Vida and
Froilan have worked together through the years in multifaceted
layers of art – as principal dancers of Ballet Philippines, as cochoreographers
and re-stagers in many dance productions, as
actors in several plays at the CCP, as collaborators in performance
art projects and now, for the first time, as partners in the showcase
of their talent in visual arts.
The exhibit explores patterns, shapes and colors through the
dance paintings of Edna Vida and the sky photography of Nonoy
Froilan. In their artworks, we see connections between emotions
and perceptions, movement and stillness, energy and tranquility,
human and ethereal forms in harmony with each other.
The exhibit will run from October 26 to January 9, 2022. The artworks

Edna Vida
When I paint there’s a choreographer in me that moves my
hands and I’ve learned to trust it. Instead of being in control, I feel
something controlling me. I enjoy being whisked away into a world
that flows with freedom.
Everything I draw wants to move. When I harness movement with
a brush, my hand sways with rhythm, there’s a shade of allegro
and adagio; the strokes are lyrical or bravura. My choreography on
canvas is mapped by shapes and colors instead of steps.
After following strict rules in dance, I now enjoy experimentation
and surprise. Most of my works are unanticipated because they
come from an irreverent soul that loves to go against rules. I’m like
a wild child not caring about anything and for me, the mind of a
child is the most creative.
Dance subjects are living and breathing organisms with the power
to metamorphose into something else. My figures are caught in
an in-between moment when they come from somewhere and are
going elsewhere.
As a dancer, I learned to move with restraint or abandon. I worked
with many artists and, after each performance, heard loud applause.
In the visual arts it’s a lot quieter. In this peaceful vacuum I find
myself alone. I can continue my romance with dance but I can be
me at last.

Evolution scientists have a hard time explaining the fact that
sometimes something which is not designed is actually well
designed.
Confined in our condo during the most of the quarantine period,
I watched the everyday drama of sunsets from my window. The
view, with all those unusual shapes and colors, was something
I took for granted for so many years. I challenged myself to take
several photographs and was surprised that sunsets manifested
differently on my camera screen. At first it was just an experiment
then I became more serious. My initial idea for these photographs
was for a dance or theater production, using them as projected
images on a cyclorama as a static or moving background. Since
then, I’ve tried to capture the dramatic beauty that I see each dawn,
noon and dusk.
Taking a photograph of the sky is like taking a photograph of
dance. If you miss the peak of movement it will be gone forever. It
changes every second so I have to be quick to press the shutter.
The clouds have stories that stir my imagination. They ignite my
senses in different ways because they speak to me. When I see
a cloud formation there’s always an intuitive voice that tells me,
“Shoot this!”.
For me, God’s designs are there for us to appreciate the deeper
meaning of nature and it’s up to us to get the message He gives
with His clouds.
