Preliminary Canter
DER FEIND
DES
GUTEN
IST DAS
BESSERE!
Dear readers of PFERD+SPORT,
Several eventful weeks packed with high calibre sport are behind us! It felt like one
event was chasing the next. Tokyo, Riesenbeck, Hagen – international championships
which could still happen this year thanks to the tireless effort of some initiators. We
reported on the Olympic Games in length in our previous issue. Currently you can read
about the European championships in jumping and dressage where especially the
German dressage riders excelled by winning numerous medals. The Holsteiner mare,
Annabelle and Helen Langehanenberg were part of them. David Will and C Vier contributed
a large part to the silver medal for the jumping team.
In our ‘land between the seas‘ the clock did not stop either. In Hamburg the Global
Champions Tour leg did happen. Elmshorn staged a successful elite foal auction and
the big state show with the state foal championship had been held at Bad Segeberg.
We report on all this events for you in this issue.
Finally, something about me personally: This preliminary canter will my last one for
several months. I would like to say goodbye to you, dear readers of PFERD+SPORT for
a while. Those who met me during the past couple of weeks will suspect the reason.
In October, my husband and I expect another child – a very good reason for a timeout,
we think. In spring, I would like to return to take on again the Holsteiner part of
this magazine.
Until then I wish you lots of fun and enjoyment with your horses and all the best.
Sincerely yours
For the first
time herpes
licensing and
PILOT PROJECT TO
PREVENT HERPES
For the first time a
pilot experiment
regarding herpes
prevention will be
run during this year’s
licensing and auction
at Holstenhallen in Neumünster.
Behind it is an innovative
concept for all
participating horses. All
of them will be tested
beforehand by a nostril
swab for herpes virus.
The pilot experiment
has been developed
by the analytical laboratory
for veterinary
science based in Hamburg,
ALAVET GmbH, and Petra
Wilm, former president of
the Trakehner Verband, herself
a breeder and rider. “Until
now, herpes prevention by
daily temperature taking
in the stable at home prior
to an event had not only
been tiresome but unreliable
as well”, Wilm
says. “By using this test
kit exhibitors can test
comfortably at home
and once only”. The kits
will be sent by mail to exhibitors
a good week prior to an
event and will be free this year. By using a
specific swab the nostril mucosa can be
dabbed. Afterwards the test material will
be returned in its special package,
provided as well. At ALAVET laboratory
it will be analysed by PCR test
and the result will be sent to the
exhibitor as well as to the organizers
of the event via e-mail.
Top foal
auction year
concluded
HOLSTEINER VERBAND This year’s last Holsteiner
foal auction has ended held online. A
total of 28 foals mostly born late had been
on offer.
„2021
has been the strongest year regarding
auctions so far for the
Holsteiner Verband, with seven
auction events and more than 160 offers in total“, said marketing
manager Roland Metz. “Establishing this event mainly
for late born foals has been well accepted by our breeders.”
Catalogue no. 11, Dankeschön by Don VHP-Casall changed
to Swiss ownership for 14,000 Euros. The b-Horses
GmbH with managing director Fabian Kühl is among
long standing buyers at Holsteiner auctions. It secured
catalogue no. 14, Ophelia’s Legende by Q-Verdi-Clarimo,
for 12,000 Euros. Chaccon Amour AC by Chacco-
Blue-Quidam de Revel found new owners for 12,000
Euros, too. He will remain in Germany. On average
the foals cost around 7,660 Euros. “That has been
a worthy conclusion of a successful year of foal
auctions“, said Roland Metz.
Dr. Thomas
Nissen
named commissioner
for animal
well-being
HOLSTEINER VERBAND
A
new position, staffed by a familiar
face has been installed by
the Holsteiner Verband’s management
recently. Former breeding
director, Dr. Thomas Nissen, will take
on the task of commissioner for animal
well-being.
Everything to do with the well-being of
animals is taking on more and more room.
Sensitivity is constantly growing for this
important topic. “The Holsteiner Verband
is recognizing this“, says the president,
Hinrich Romeike. “We have to go even deeper
into this subject“, he added. That is why
the position of commissioner for animal
well-being has been introduced into the
statutes during the recent delegates meeting.
Dr. Thomas Nissen has been named
for it because of his experience in horse
breeding, sport and horse keeping gained
well-being, Dr. Thomas Nissen.
over several decades. In close cooperation
with the new breeding manager, Stephan
Haarhoff, both managing directors, Roland
Metz and Norbert Boley as well as with the
honorary appointed board and the presidents
of the licensing districts, Dr. Thomas
Nissen wants to advise and help. “I have in
mind to discuss current topics with the
people in office and to give active support
in case it is needed”, says the newly appointed
commissioner. “Our horses‘ wellbeing
is an important domain which needs
a lot of attention besides breeding and
sport”, Dr. Nissen concluded.
In early September, Janne-Friederike
Meyer-Zimmermann lost one of her
top talents for a great future. Quim CL,
a son of Quiwi Dream-Levisto, died after
colic surgery. Meyer-Zimmermann wrote
on instagram: “All of us, me and my whole
team, are endlessly sad and we feel with
the owners, the Jahr-Kretzl family and his
breeder, Carsten Lauck. Quim always gave
us a lot of pleasure, we enjoyed his liveliness,
his love of jumping and his fantastic
character.”
The licensed stallion had been in the jumping
rider’s stable since several years. The
pair celebrated numerous successes in
international youngster tour events. The
latest was a third place in the Derby of Falsterbo.
Quim was only nine years old.
MARE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR
RIDING HORSES
› Again this year, the Holsteiner Verband
organized the mare championship for riding
horses during the horse day at NORLA.
Kesse Franzi by Franziskus-Aljano (Thomas
Horns, Bredenbekshorst) and Sabrina Sievertsen-Nissen
were presented as the winners.
Both judges, Hans-Joachim Ahsbahs
and Dierk Groth awarded the total score of
8.7. A daughter by Uriko out of a dam by
Catoo came second. Luna Lugana (Susanne
Schmidt, Ahrensbök), presented by Susanne
Krohn, scored 8.5. Kera Bella by Belissimo-Ampère
(Thomas Horns, Bredenbekshorst)
achieved a total score of 8.3 and
came third with Kendra Agge. Martin Prignitz
from Kollmoor took part in the parade
of the animal show. He led his mare, B-Coco
Certa by Cassini II-Heraldik xx together
with her filly by Cesandrow in Rendsburg.
He presented his horses in the tent of the
animal show as well.
TWO CIERAN OFFSPRING WON THE VTV/R+V FOAL CHAMPIONSHIP.
Thumbs pointing up, clapping the shoulders of his long-time
employee, Ivan Ivanov, Manfred von Allwörden finished this
year’s state foal championship. The industrial baker from
Grönwohld is the breeder of the winning filly as well as the
winning colt. Both have seven-year-old Cieran by Casall as their
sire.
ned all 9.5’s and 10’s. “This late-born foal
convinced not only by her youthful charm
but exceptional quality as well”, said Hartmut
Kettelhodt. “It impresses immediately
with its striking markings and big uphill
movement and led the group of mares by
a large margin“, he added. Second place
was for a daughter of Chacfly PS, bred by
Evi Bengtsson (Itzehoe) per embryo transfer
out of the national German champion
Ulika by Colman as her genetic dam. “Breeding
and sport go together and this foal
is showing it excellently”, Kettelhodt was
sure. “Equipped with big movement and
at the same time a well closed body, this
filly will grow up to become an excellent
young talent for the sport.” A filly by Dinken-Clarimo,
bred by Stephan Johannsen
in Hörup came third. “This very feminine
foal is an absolute eye-catcher”, the judge
commented. “The beautiful face, the large
shoulder over a light foundation, always
elastic and uphill in her sequence of movement
– everything fits”. A foal bred by Olaf
Rörden (Föhr) by Clarimo out of a dam by
Carthago came fourth. “With her typical
Holsteiner looks this foal shows a beautiful
neck and good movement“, the judges
said. Fifth was a filly by Cahil-Canto bred
by Marion Teegen at Husberg. “This mare
gets noticed immediately, she has large
movement and certainly a good career in
the jumping arena will be ahead of her.”
the reserve winning filly.
Her former top horse,
Ulika is the genetic dam.
„I
am absolutely overwhelmed“, said
Manfred von Allwörden following his
double win at the state show of Bad
Segeberg. “To have two winning foals is unbelievable
in itself. But to have both coming
from my sire tops everything”, the owner
of Grönwohlhof stud is overjoyed. The legendary
stud is also home to Cieran, who
placed with Sofie Svensson (SWE) at the
final of seven-year-old jumping horses at
S**-level in this year’s Bundeschampionat.
Von Allwörden bought the stallion bred by
Carsten Harms (Rastede) as a foal. The winning
filly out of a dam by Cassini I finished
at the top of a strong field of
17 competitors. The three
judges, Rasmus Lüneburg
(Hetlingen), Hartmut Kettelhodt
(Kirchlinteln) and
Oliver Ross (Thedinghausen) gave
top scores. The youngest foal of
not only with his pedigree but
also with its beautiful face and stunning
Heinrich Peters, Krempermoor. The sire
Cahil was strongly represented by a total
of four championship foals in his first generation.
One of his sons came fifth, out of
a dam by Cassini I and bred Uwe Pahl in
Dägeling. Norbert Boley, managing director
of the Holsteiner Verband’s Hengsthaltungs
was satisfied with the event. “Especially
the group of fillies was very strong and
of excellent quality. The younger foals
especially took advantage of the rather late
date. They showed in excellent condition”.
Top quality trophies
Not only the best Holsteiner foals of this
generation and the special atmosphere of
Bad Segeberg made the VTV/R+V Holsteiner
quality trophies are an important incentive
for breeders as well. For his winning filly
won two Böckmann horse trailers, both
sponsored by VTV/R+V insurance general
representatives, Birte Stapelfeldt and Hauke
won a voucher for an attractive rug worth
250 Euro each by Holsteiner Verband
Hengsthaltungs GmbH, feeding troughs
Salvana and video-vouchers from ClipMy-
donated by Hengsthaltungs GmbH,
worth 1000 Euros for the best foal sired by
a young stallion, a filly by Cahil-Canto. The
best presented pair came from Denmark.
It was Lone Wollesen’s dam and her foal by
Top sport on a
country stage
The strenuous effort paid off. Ludger Beerbaum and his team of Riesenbeck International
had only a few months to set the stage for the EUROPEAN JUMPING CHAMPIONSHIPS
following barely four weeks after the Olympic Games in Tokyo. In a relaxed atmosphere
where top sport and rural ambiance came together the German jumping riders won team
silver and André Thieme secured the individual title – a redemption after their disappointing
results in Japan. Horses with Holsteiner pedigree had a large part in the successes.
Sixty-five riders, fifteen teams and a
the European title. Course designer
Frank Rothenberger created sophisticated
but always fair rounds with a fancy look and
managed to keep up the tension until the
very last rider. The championship consisted
of four competitions: jumping against
the clock on the first day, two rounds for
the Nations Cup over two days for the team
title and - following one rest day - the final
for the top 25 for the individual title with
rounds A and B.
Switzerland wins the team title
The team title was for Switzerland on 9.47
the team gold. It looks like Fuchs has already
found a promising replacement for
his Olympic horse, Clooney whose career
in the sport is finished after his tragic pasture
fullest, probably because of the tensionfilled
Olympic atmosphere. In Riesenbeck,
however, she was in top form. One mistake
Pedigrees: Cardento and Chacco
Blue set the tone
The trend has been noticeable at the Olympic
Games and it was obvious in Riesenbeck
as well: Jumping horse breeders do
have a look around as to where to find the
best blood or what they think it is and less
often it is found in the neighbourhood or
their own breeding association. The term
pure breeding becomes meaningless in
sport horse breeding, with the exception
of Trakehners - and it is well known that
they don’t play a large role in jumping. The
associations who followed this trend early,
like the Dutch KWPN, the Belgian BWP,
Zangersheide stud or the Oldenburger
Jumping Horse Division OS are the beneficiaries.
Left with nothing, however, are
the associations who tried to hedge their
gene pool for a relatively long like Holstein
I
or the French Selle Francaise even though
almost every horse at this European championship
carried the blood of the Holsteiner
or French greats. Cardento has to be
named here for Holstein. The former manager
of the Swedish stallion depot Flyinge,
Professor Ingvar Fredricson says about
him that he changed the look of Swedish
warmblood breeding. Chacco Blue by
Chambertin-Contender who passed away
way too early ranks already among the big
names of the jumping horse sires of our
times. The numbers express it clearly: all
three Cardento-offspring among the top
seven, four Chacco Blue-progeny competing.
Of twenty breeding associations represented,
gold has to be awarded to the
Belgian BWP with twelve horses and four
of them, not less than one third, among
the top twelve in the final B-round. The
BWP is followed by KWPN with seven horses
and Holstein and OS with six horses
each. The German breeding associations
competed with a total of 20 horses. They
will have noticed that the competition does
not sleep.
Global Equestrian Group
By running this successful European
Jumping championships Riesenbeck
International did vault into the first row
among the top locations for the sport.
This achievement not only needed the
knowledge and initiative of four-time
Olympic gold medallist Ludger
Beerbaum and his team but also an
investor who was prepared to shell out
a lot of money. Early this year, the
contract with Global Equestrian Group
was signed. Apart from Riesenbeck
International, Helgstrand Stables in
Denmark and the show complex in
Palm Beach/Florida are part of it.
Owner of the Florida location is Mark
Bellissimo, the manager of the World
Equestrian Games in Tryon 2018. The
Global Equestrian Group is under the
roof of Private Equity Investment
Group Waterland, a hedge fond
managed in the Netherlands.
Therefore, it is a rather large wheel
that is turned on the beautiful grounds
of castle Surenburg. Philipp Freiherr
Heeremann von Zuydtwyck remains to
be the owner, he leased out the area
for the duration of 99 years. According
to the baron, one clause in the lease
contract says that the area may only
be used for activities related to
equestrian sports.
The main business of Global
Equestrian Group will be dealing with
top sport horses. Ludger Beerbaum is
the first choice for jumping horses,
Andreas Helgstrand for dressage
horses. There are enough affluent
people wanting to invest their money
in top horses, Beerbaum explains. And
of course, horses and riders need a
stage for their sport, therefore
first-class events are part of the
concept.
By now, Riesenbeck International
has three outdoor show arenas, among
them a stadium on grass, a covered
riding arena and 312 new permanent
loose-boxes, all with an outside
window. There are wide stable
passages, spacious room for
equipment and open areas for the
grooms. Building of the stables started
only in March. Beforehand, the course
of a stream running alongside the area
had to be redirected.
Ten to twelve shows per year are
planned at Riesenbeck. Smaller events
at two-star-level or late entry
competitions, every fortnight in winter,
are designed to be a market place for
breeders, trainers and the Beerbaum’s
stallion station. Driving competitions
which have a long standing tradition in
Riesenbeck shall remain. Apart from
the already established jumping events
there will be dressage events in the
future, too. In 2023, Riesenbeck
International wants to stage the
European dressage championships. So
far it is the sole applicant.
at the European championships at Hof Kasselmann in Hagen at Teutoburger
Competing at the European championship
in Hagen had been the
somewhat logical development of
a successful season. Annabelle, thirteenyear
old daughter of Conteur, had always
been slightly overshadowed by other horses,
namely the Hanoverian stallion Damsey.
Remarkable international success like
winning the grand prix special in Aarhus
(Denmark) remained rather unnoticed at
home. Annabelle stepped to the foreground
following Damsey’s retirement. The bay
mare, bred and owned by Günther Fielmann
(Schierensee), recommended herself
at the German national championships
at Balve in early June. This championship
was also used as the selection for Tokyo
and Annabelle and Helen Langehanenberg
finished all three competitions, grand prix,
special and freestyle, in fifth place. The
second selection left a smiliar picture at
the Rath-Linsenhoff family’s Schafhof at
Kronberg. Now it had been the DOKR dressage
committee’s turn to decide on who
would be the reserve for Tokyo, either Helen
Langehanenberg or Benjamin Werndl
with Daily Mirror. As is well known, the
39-year-old settled the race. In Tokyo, for
the first time, only three pairs formed the
team and therefore Helen Langehanenberg
and Annabelle did not compete. This would
have been possible only if either Isabell
Werth/Bella Rose or Jessica von Bredow-
Werndl/Dalera BB or Dorothee Schneider/
Showtime had to be retired due to injury
after the grand prix. That is why Annabelle‘s
moment came only at the European
championship in Hagen.
Dressage is the tall mare’s thing even
though her pedigree speaks more of a career
in jumping. Annabelle‘s sire, Conteur
had been stationed at Klaus C. Plönzke’s
ww.yourwesite.com
Tannenhof stud in Hesse for a long time. A
son of Contender, he had been a finalist
among the riding horses with Oliver Luze
at the Bundeschampionate of Warendorf.
With Anja Plönzke, Conteur was victorious
in dressage competitions up to Intermediaire
I level. Two years ago, the sire passed
away at the age of 21. He has left 14 licensed
stallions and 277 registered broodmares.
Annabelle‘s maternal sire, Linaro (by Landgraf)
did what his genetics had promised
and was successfull in the jumping arena
with legendary Herbert Blöcker. For years,
this pair was successfully involved in numerous
competitions up to medium level.
Whether Annabelle would have achieved
anything in the jumping arena had never
been tested. The question became obsolete
on the day when owner Günther Fielmann
gave the then five-year-old mare to dressage
ace Helen Langehanenberg for training.
This was six years ago. By now, Helen
knows the horse inside and out, but a
championship over several days with three
competitions in a row always allows for
new experiences.
In the grand prix, which the German
team won by a large margin, Helen Langehanenberg
was not satisfied with her ride.
Rank 16 with 73.96 percent, this could have
been done a lot better. Following her ride
she said: “I am not unsatisfied, but not satisfied
either. We started excellently. Annabelle
was great to ride, felt fabulous and
it was fun. This two mistakes, especially
when counting twice, have
been unnecessary“. The mare
had lost attention because of
a moving camera in the transition
from piaffe to passage.
One hiccup followed in the flying
changes. “She is a keen
horse, ever has been. And the
more avid she gets, the faster
slips can happen“, said Langehanenberg
and continued
raving about Annabelle. “She
is fabulous, really a talent. We
have achieved a lot so far and
I believe in her and I think that
all in all she did well. But there
will be room for more.” Despite
her rider’s critical remarks,
Annabelle did impress with
overall very good piaffes and
passages, well set pirouettes
and very straight flying changes
at Hagen.
“Room for more“, that seemed
to be the motto in the
grand prix special. It turned
out to be the best test of Annabelle
and Helen Langehanenberg
in the European championship
stadium. “It had been my clear
target to get errorless through this because
I had seen in the grand prix how much
a mistake in the one tempi changes cost
here. The more happy and proud I am now.
Annabelle had been attentive and well focussed.
Every second it felt like she listened
to me and I had it under control“. A score
of 75.228 percent says it all. At the end of a
long competition week the energy was
slightly gone. Even though the pair, as the
third best German combination, had qualified
for the freestyle, a slip in the canter
pirouette lowered the score. “This was a
total communication problem. Obviously
it was my fault, I gave her a bad aid. It was
National coach Monica Theodorescu added:
“One should not forget that Annabelle had
ELITE FOAL AUCTION AT HOLSTEINER VERBAND
Sixty-four strictly selected offers made
the lot for the elite foal auction held
in a hybrid format at Elmshorn on 21
August. Catalogue No.1, Coelho by Chacco-
Blue-Kannan was sold for 28,500 Euros. The
second most expensive foal, Constantin by
Crack-Contender heard the hammer banging
down at 17,500 Euros. The colt is bred by
the Röhrden family on the island of Föhr and
his sire is of the famous line 104A. Crack’s
dam is O-Contendra B, a full sister of legendary
Contendro. Crack himself became the
talk of town following his spectacular wins at
the state championship in Elmshorn as well
as at the Bundeschampionate at Warendorf.
Vingino’s foals very well paid
Vingino is a son of Voltaire and proven in
the sport. Four of his sons and daughters
enriched the elite collection. All of them
cost more than 10,000 Euros. The most
expensive among them was Virginia out of
a dam by Uriko (Wilfried Thomann, Drelsdorf).
The filly of line 890 has a very special
grand-dam. It is Lavall I’s daughter Kira,
Casall’s mother. Her new owners paid
16,000 Euros for Virginia. b-Horses GmbH
and their manager Fabian Kühl secured
this very interestingly bred foal and bought
two more offers, Madonna by Mumbai v.d.
GmbH of Langwedel. This light-footed filly
is a half-sister of Colcannon, who was the
reserve winner at his licensing in 2018.
Bought for 15,500 Euros, she is travelling
to her new home in the United States.
Out of the foals sold, 28 cost more than
10.000 Euros. “With a top result like this
one we – that is namely our breeders – can
successfully continue the achievement of
the elite auction in 2020”, managing director
Roland Metz said very satisfied. The
average price was 9,700 Euros. „At more
than 80 percent, the sales quota is quite
high. This is an important sign for us and
our breeders”, Metz concluded.
in der Lage, meine Pferde in den verschiedensten Trainingsund
Turnierphasen perfekt unterstützen zu können!
So erreiche ich z.B. mit Gastrointestinal bei stressigen
THE HOLSTEINER
Neumünster calling!
LICENSING AND ELITE RIDING HORSE AUCTION The year 2021 is progressing in big
steps – noticeably also in the fact that the most important event of the Holsteiner
calendar is coming closer. From 28 to 30 October, the national (and international)
breeding and sport scene is looking towards Holstein.
Photos: Janne Bugtrup
There will be some novelties and lots
of things proven over the years. The
time table remained rather unchanged:
Thursday the stallions are presented
on hard ground, Friday the free jumping
is the big attraction and on
Saturday the licensing decisions
are made with the riding horse
auction to follow. In early September,
the pre-selection for the
licensing was held and breeding
manager, Stephan Haarhoff, new
in office since the beginning of this
year, is very satisfied with the stallion generation
of 2019. “We saw a lot of very modern
horses who did very well in the loose
jumping and showed above average movement“.
Seventy young Holsteiner were chosen
as the best of their generation by the
partly new licensing commission, now consisting
of Stephan Haarhoff, Michael Gonell,
Christian Thoroe, Horst-Klaus Heleine
and Lars Nieberg. Haarhoff also mentions
genetic variety. ”Apart from Holsteiner
big names like Casall, Colman, Diarado,
28 to 30
October
Livello or, for instance, Uriko the catalogue
shows a lot of outcross sires. Chacfly PS,
Conthargos, Dominator, Emerald, Halifax,
Nixon and Taloubet Z are named here, representing
several others as well. Not
to be omitted are the well proven
mare lines which are our biggest
advantage.”
For the first time the free jumping
will be managed by Wolfgang
Arnold (Interview see page
24), who has a new team at his side,
too. One novelty at the test jumping
on Wednesday: The stallions’
technical abilities and
quick reactions
will be tested
in an inout
jumping lane. “For the first time we will
omit the lungeing, plus we did not accept
stallions born in July or later. The new
guide lines for animal protection are an
important part of the concept, therefore
the fences in the free jumping will be 1.30m
maximum”, Haarhoff continues. Prof. Edgar
Schallenberger, representative for animal
protection of the Chamber of Agriculture
Schleswig-Holstein, watched the preselection
all week to confirm that all procedures
were handled horse friendly and
according to the stallions’ age.
50 riding horses in the
elite lot
Roland Metz and his team have assembled
a collection for the traditional
elite riding horse auction which offers
everything a customer could wish
for, from three-year-old youngster
to five-year-old jumper ready to
compete. Sport partners for ambitious
amateurs, Holsteiner eventing
talents and two candidates for
the large dressage arena have
found their way into the lot as
well. All of them will be presented
in Neumünster on Friday
evening. “A large number of
promising horses for all disciplines
and levels of the sport
were presented to us and we
thank all exhibitors for it“,
says managing director Roland
Metz. All information regarding
the horses including videos
will be found on the Holsteiner Verband’s
website, for the riding horses from
27 September and for the stallions from 5
October. In addition, all information regarding
tickets and the current corona regulations
will be published there.
SERIES
15 MINUTES
WITH
WOLFGANG
ARNOLD
This year, a new team has been
found for the free jumping at
the licensing of young stallions
in Neumünster at the end of October.
Wolfgang Arnold (55) of Southern Germany
is managing it. At the Swabian
Alps, near the Main and State Stud
Marbach, the riding instructor runs
his facility. He has been awarded the
riding badge in gold and is successful
in the sport up to S***-level. Since several
years, Wolfgang Arnold runs the
free jumping at the Southern German
Stallion Days, at auctions and at free
jumping championships. He is well familiar
with Holsteiner horses because
his top jumpers are by Cento, Clearway
and Casall. Carolin Tassius-Diederich
had a talk with him.
PFERD+SPORT: From your experience,
what is the special challenge in free
jumping at a licensing?
WOLFGANG ARNOLD: “A well-structured
sequence is an important requirement for
a successful free jumping. The execution
should be the same for all horses to offer
equal conditions and chances for all. For
me personally, it is very important to act
in a horse friendly manner according to
their age. Taking one step back and to be
individually responsive to a stallion might
be necessary in some cases”.
How did the free jumping in Holstein appear
to you from the outside in recent years?
WOLFGANG ARNOLD: “The free jumping
at Neumünster gets a lot of attention in the
circle of experts. Like in other associations
there have been differences regarding the
quality and also in preparing the stallions.
It has been positive to note that less stallions
seemed to have been over-trained during
their preparation for the test”.
You saw all stallions already once during
the selection. What was your impression?
WOLFGANG ARNOLD: “It had been a very
pleasant atmosphere at Elmshorn. Feedback
from the trainers of the stallions has
been good and I received valuable hints
regarding individual horses without any
meddling or butting in. Overall we got to
see very interesting pedigrees, top basic
quality and an overall professional preparation
as well as natural jumping. I am
looking forward to the licensing in Neumünster
now“.
THE YOUNG BREEDER
Successful
open house
YOUNG BREEDERS
Photos: Privat
Around 50 kids and young people used the opportunity to learn more about the Holsteiner horse and about the young breeders
work during the weekend of the Holsteiner elite foal auction on 21 August. The participants managed a small course along
several stops. It started with a presentation of feed by Marstall. The kids had to identify various grains and cereals. The next
stop was a tack room with different bridles, bits and grooming equipment. Especially the younger kids recognized a lot here. Another
sponsor of the day, PeerSpan supported the young breeders by presenting four small containers with different bedding material. The
children could look at it, feel it and smell it to find the correct answers.
After enjoying some snacks the young breeders did what they do best: presenting horses. Everybody had the opportunity to walk
the triangular lane with one very well-behaved pony. In the end there was a small souvenir for each participant, donated by Marstall
and PeerSpan. The team of organizers from various young breeders clubs was happy with the positive feedback and gaining a couple
of new members.
Most visitors did not know a lot about the young breeders. The day offered a great opportunity to show part of their work and to give
some insights. Holsteiner young breeders are organized in ten clubs all over the state of Schleswig-Holstein. They teach
their members how to breed and keep horses and help out at some of the Verband’s events. Following this open house
various clubs will offer training days for young talents. The next big event is the Holsteiner licensing from 28 to 30 October
2021.
THE HOLSTEINER NEWS
Holsteiner of the Month:
Zilia D
It is a truly versatile horse which the editors of PFERD+SPORT
chose to be the Horse of the Month in October. It is Zilia D by Corland-Mytens
xx-Calypso IV-Molke I of mare line 18 B1. This year,
the grey mare cantered from success to success with her breeder’s
grandson, Nane Nikolaus Dehn at competitions for young talents
in eventing. They made the podium and won the “Preis der Besten”
(Award for the best) as well as the National Youth championships
and at the European championships recently. Earlier they had been
successful in dressage and in the jumping arena.
The now 15-year-old Holsteiner was born in the barn of Gabriele and
„Fiede“ Dehn. The ambitious breeders from Husum use this dam line
spoilt by success since generations. It all began with Hera by Moltke,
who had set a standard as a broodmare with Campesino (Thomas Voss)
and the licensed stallion Lagos. Out of her daughter Venus the Dehn’s
bred several horses, all by the thoroughbred Mytens xx. One of them
was Kleopatra, the dam of Zilia D. Looking at the line, it becomes obvious
how special the broodmare Hera and her daughters and granddaughters
have been. Another trademark of the Dehn’s breeding goes
back to it as well. It is Dynastie D by Casall, formerly a reserve winning
mare and now successful jumper up to 1.55m-level with Jan Meves.
Last year, she had been named Holsteiner of the Month, too. CTD
breeder of a Holsteiner horse which had been one of the
world’s most successful jumping horses in the 1950’s. Dreeßen
bred Meteor by Diskus who had been a household word with
his rider Fritz Thiedemann in his time. At the Dreeßen’s farm
the gelding was used as a work horse during the week and
competed with the breeder’s son in jumping once in a while on
Sundays until he was discovered by Thiedemann and won
Olympic medals and championship titles. On 20 August, the
ADVERTORIAL
“Feed is a factor“
Photo: Derby
DERBY horse feed is a partner of the Holsteiner Association
Marketing and Auction Ltd. “We provide quality horse feed
and stand by as a partner of the Verband and of Holsteiner
breeders and their customers“, said managing director, Olaf
Krause. During an interview, the DERBY feeding expert for
Schleswig-Holstein, Niklas Horst, answers five questions
regarding feeding a prospective sire.
From what age do stallions have special
feed requirements?
NIKLAS HORST: “Very high standards have
to be met when preparing a young stallion
for licensing. The decision whether a colt
could be a candidate for licensing is made
very early, often even when he is still a suckling.
During its youth the horse undergoes
a remarkable development in its growth,
which sometimes destroys the expectations
which were placed on the dream foal that it
had been at its dam’s side. Late-blooming
foals especially are often not destined for a
licensing career because they can’t develop
the necessary growth and body condition
during the two and a half years up to a successful
licensing. The decision whether a
young stallion will be selected for a possible
licensing is made by the licensing commission
of the responsible breeding association
during the pre-selection of the then two-year-olds.
Conformation, stage of development,
basic movements and free-jumping are judged
at this events. Feed which is tailored for
the necessary kind of training for this challenge
should be administered already during
the preparation for the selection event.”
Why do stallions need a special feeding
concept on their way to the licensing?
NIKLAS HORST: “To promote the necessary
development of a promising sire candidate
it is important to appropriately adjusting
the feed to take full advantage of the genetic
potential. As little as possible should be left
to chance here. Young stallions are trained
with the aim to achieve noteworthy training
stimuli which then make sense for a specific
feed. Stallions, unlike mares and geldings,
have a different
hormone balance which induces the optical
appearance of the stallion type. Feeding
an aspiring sire candidate should aim for
high quality protein content to support the
best possible muscle development.
What can be achieved by feed?
NIKLAS HORST: „Feed for a young stallion
should be tailored to promote an optimal
developed stallion at the time of the licensing.
Basic feed of top quality and hygienically
impeccable hay or silage assure this.
Basic feed, that is roughage, should be accessible
ideally all day, at least twice a day
amounting to at least 1kg (TS)/100 kg body
weight. The quality of the basic feed is often
a limiting factor. Hygienic deficits cannot be
compensated by good crib feed! Crib feed
should supply valuable protein, a suitable
energy content and vitamins, minerals and
micronutrients tailored to the needs. Concentrated
feed containing valuable protein
is recommended to promote
muscle development. DERBY
Vital or DERBY Aminotop
can both be administered
in addition to the
usual feed ration. Protein
in feed is an element
for the organism
to build musculature.
Digestion
disassembles protein
into its individual
properties,
the amino acids, to
build from it the
necessary tissue
like muscles, sinews,
ligaments
and cartilage etc.
Feed tailored to
the performance
allows the best
possible nutrition
for the building
process
and minimal
burdening of the
metabolism at the
same time.”
Feeding is not everything. Can a stallion be
suitably prepared without special feed, just by
training, to be competitive at the licensing?
NIKLAS HORST: “No, training causes a
training stimulus that triggers build-up and
conversion processes. This processes can
only have the desired effects if supported by
adequately supply.”
How does feeding influence fertility?
NIKLAS HORST: “Several factors influence
the sperm quality. It depends on light, movement,
feeding, stimulus etc. Feed is one factor.
Feeding with good oats enriched with 20
gram DERBY Aminotop and 100 gram DERBY
Mineral-Pellets to secure a mineral supply
can be optimal.”
STATION TEST FOR MARES 2021
In spring 2022 the station tests for 3-year-old Holsteiner
mares will be carried out in Elmshorn. The mares will be
kept at the station for 2 weeks. On the delivery day the
mares have to be ridden in front of the test director by
their own rider.
The fees for the entire station test amount to approx. 700
€ per mare. This includes all costs (accommodation and
care of the mares, riding and examination fees).
For the months of April / May 2022, two rounds of station
tests are being planned. The exact dates will be fixed
after receipt of the registrations and the owners of the
mares will be informed.
We ask the breeders to register their mares for the station
test 2022.
Any Holsteiner mare (born in 2019) may be
entered. Should you be interested in having your mare
undergo performance testing - which is rather important
from the breeder’s point of view - you may enter the
mare in question by submitting the entry form to the
Holsteiner Verband, Abteilung Zucht, Steenbeker Weg
151, 24106 Kiel.
Registration deadline is 09 November 2021. Please
adhere to this deadline, as we need to have an overview
of the mares entered for performance testing as soon as
possible. You will be issued with more information upon
registration.
