The climate around the tree line is 

often very harsh. Most of the larches 

and arolla pines therefore grow into 

impressive, slanted and crookedly 

shaped trees with several treetops.

Wildlife biologist 

Monika Dönz-Breuss is extremely familiar with Alpe 

Gues. After all, she basically lives right around the 

corner from it in Silbertal. She has been offering 

guided hikes for years now. “I want to pass on my 

knowledge to my fellow humans. It is of utmost importance to 

me to inspire both the visitors and the locals for our beautiful region 

and its fascinating fauna. And that works best on the ground. 

When we’re there, I explain why it’s important to preserve and provide 

refuges for nature and its inhabitants,” says the nature guide. 

Once a week, she takes a small group of people with her to Alpe 

Gues – a tour that provides fascinating insights into the local landscape 

and alpine economy. The way there is quite long, but is totally 

worth it: five hours of walking time lie ahead of the hikers. 

They need a good basic level of fitness, surefootedness and hiking 

boots that support the ankles. When it comes to bringing young 

children and dogs along, there are definitely better options. F


FORMER ALPINE DAIRY FARM 

The participants can enjoy a vast panorama 

at their feet en route. The hike 

leads them past two small mountain 

lakes and repeatedly offers picturesque 

scenes that not only get the heart of every 

hobby photographer beating faster. 

It is at its most beautiful in autumn when 

the colours become more intense and the 

contrasts more defined. 

The destination of this hike is a former alpine 

dairy farm. Up until the 1950s, butter 

and the typical Montafon Sura Kees 

were produced here. Nowadays, around 

110 cows and their calves spend the summer 

here – including those of Monika and 

her family. “The Montafon would look 

totally different without the alpine economy. 

It would be characterised by large 

forest landscapes. Some of today’s specific 

habitat types wouldn’t even exist,” 

says Monika.

BIZARRE SHAPES 

Another phenomena is strikingly obvious 

on this tour: Some of the trees 

look bizarre ... why is that? “The climate 

around the tree line is often very harsh. 

Most of the larches and arolla pines 

therefore grow into impressive, slanted 

and crookedly shaped trees with several 

treetops,” Monika reports. By the way: 

large populations of these tree species 

were cleared in many places in the Middle 

Ages. The upper section of the Silbertal 

is one of the few exceptions. F


Verwall 

Area: 120 km 2 

Elevation: 1,160–2,912 m a.s.l. 

A PORTRAIT OF THE EUROPEAN CONSERVATION AREA VERWALL 

The Verwall is the largest European conservation or “Natura 2000” area in 

Vorarlberg. It encompasses 120 square kilometres – which makes it bigger 

than most of Austria’s national parks. An inhospitable climate, grass landscapes 

and a rocky terrain make up a harsh habitat for specialists: the alpine 

snow grouse has no trouble dealing with the winter, as you can already 

guess by the name. The dwarf willow, “the smallest tree in the world”, only 

emerges a few centimetres from the soil. The isolation and tranquillity of 

this area provide a refuge for endangered species of bird such as golden eagles, 

peregrine falcons and eagle owls, as well as other wild animals. Vorarlberg’s 

largest still contiguous forest of larch and arolla pine is situated in the 

upper Silbertal valley. The moor landscapes, for example the ones around 

the Gretsch and Fresch pastures are another special feature. This is where 

you can find the rare large cranberry. 

At 1,160 metres above sea level, the Gieslatobel is the lowest point of the 

Verwall and the Pflunspitze (2,912 metres) the highest. “A hike though 

the Verwall helps sharpen one’s awareness for the importance of an intact 

natural and cultural landscape,” Monika says. A “non-deterioration” 

rule applies to the European Conservation Area. That means: “The habitats 

and populations of a species such as that of the snow grouse must 

be preserved in the European Conservation Area. Every visitor can contribute 

to this rule by not leaving the paths, only riding their bike on 

marked routes and putting their dog on a leash.”

HEIGHTENED PERCEPTION 

If the hikers are lucky enough to see a rare 

animal such as a golden eagle or a snow 

grouse, that’s great. But it’s not the most 

important thing, Monika says: “Either 

way, we can experience the habitat of the 

wild animals, get to know their needs and 

particularities and are thus a little more 

sensitised for our next hike.” The feedback 

from the visitors encourages her: “I 

keep hearing the regular guests say that 

they can now see the Montafon with different 

eyes. They are finally noticing the 

little peculiarities by the wayside, which 

they walked past many times before.” P

FORSCHUNGSPFAD 

Golmi and Golmine are getting some support: From summer 2021, the cute 

marmots will accompany you on the 3.5 kilometre-long Golmi’s Exploration Trail together 

with the ibexes Bocki and Rocki . After a short ascent on the Golmerbahn, numerous 

new attractions await the young researchers. 

The 21 stations of the themed trail on turning, pushing, pulling and pressing were reviewed 

in terms of their content and reconstructed. Amongst other things, the enlarged 

fountains are even more fun and the balancing course was complemented by a 

bouncy milk churn course. Before enjoying the spectacular ball track as the ultimate 

ending, you can take a souvenir photo at a photo point with Golmi and 

his friends. The contents of the individual stations are designed for children 

6 years of age and older but also provide interesting 

knowledge about the flora and fauna for groups of 

youths or school classes.

FROM MATSCHWITZ TO LATSCHAU

The largest of its kind in Europe 

Seven different slides and a 3 km-long hiking trail take you from Matschwitz to 

Latschau. The forest slides with a diameter of 80 cm shorten your trip into the valley and 

are a whole lot of downhill fun. The stainless steel slides are enclosed, so that you can still 

plan to a visit to Waldrutschenpark-Golm even in light rain or in the event of an uncertain 

weather forecast. The slides vary in length from 30 to 62 m and have a total 

combined length of 380 m. That makes the park Europe’s largest 

forest slide park.

ALPINE- 

COASTER-GOLM 

Fasten your seatbelt and you’re set to go on the all-weather toboggan run at up 

to 40 km/h from Latschau to Vandans over more than 2,600 metres. On the way, 

44 exciting jumps, a spectacular 360° circle and 15 wild 180° hairpin bends provide 

plenty of variety. The drivers can determine the speed on the roughly 8-minute ride themselves. 

The Alpine-Coaster-Golm rail-bound toboggans are equipped with centrifugal brakes. 

The toboggans are automatically braked if speeds greater than 40 km/h are achieved. 

Moreover, all the toboggans are equipped with optimised seat shells and 

two safety belts. 

Children 3 years and older may ride along, those 8 years and older that 

are at least 1.40 metres tall may ride along unaccompanied and 

those 14 years and older can even bring someone along 

with them.

Vorarlberg’s largest climbing garden 

Put your skills to the test or make your first “attempts” in the trees on one of a total of 

eleven courses – up to 16 m above the ground. But never fear, you’re always on the safe 

side thanks to the climbing equipment provided to you on site. Wearing a helmet and safety 

harness, you will go through the safety training and practice course before heading off on 

a journey of discovery in the climbing park. No special prior knowledge is required 

for a visit to Waldseilpark-Golm. The courses are laid out for children, young 

people and adults in three degrees of difficulty.

The ultimate flight over the reservoir 

With the Flying-Fox-Golm, you “fly” – equipped with a safety harness and suspension device 

– over the Latschau reservoir attached to a 565 m-long steel cable. From the starting 

platform at Waldseilpark-Golm to the landing platform at Alpine-Coaster-Golm, you’ll traverse 

an elevation difference of 47.5 metres with the steel cable slide. And all this 

at an incline of approx. 8.4 degrees! Speeds of up to 70 km/h make this enormous 

Flying-Fox-Golm an absolute adrenaline kick. For safety reasons, 

you must weigh at least 25 kg to use the Flying-Fox-Golm. 

The weight limit is 110 kg.

What makes this hike a unique experience is not only the breathtaking view of the imposing 

mountain scenery of the Rätikon, but also the wooden sculptures designed by local artist 

Roland Haas. At a total of 13 locations, works of art provide exciting insights into the lives 

of the shepherds and the centuries-old Montafon Maisäß and alpine pasture tradition. This 

themed trail, awarded the Austrian hiking seal of quality, is approx. 13 kilometres long 

and is suitable for the whole family, despite the walking time of four to

group of people, a mystical forest and a trained 

nature guide. Gerlinde Manz-Christ accompanies 

those in search of some calm while forest 

bathing in Gargellen. Her goal is to convey 

the healing properties of nature and provide the participants 

with a technique to calm themselves down in 

stressful everyday situations and have an easier time facing 

challenges. 

FOREST BATHING WITHOUT A BATHING COSTUME 

Managing a stressful job, a family and a career, not forgetting 

to also tend to your friends and relatives and at 

the same time taking perfect care of your diet and figure. 

Many people will be familiar with these and other similar 

issues. I also have this everyday hassle and decided to 

do something about it. What? A tour for forest bathing in 

Gargellen. Why? Because nature recharges my batteries 

and I can unwind there. 

In the morning, I’ll be meeting up with several likeminded 

people and our tour guide Gerlinde Manz-Christ 

at the Bergbahnen Gargellen valley station. We soon find 

out that forest bathing has nothing to do with bathing or 

swimming in the traditional sense, but rather with immersing 

yourself in the forest atmosphere and experiencing 

it with all of your senses. That forest bathing happens 

at a much slower pace than hiking and that we’re now allowed 

to revert to our childhood for a few hours, displaying 

a curious and open mind. After that, we form a circle, 

switch off our mobile phones and let go. F


A WORRY STONE 

I WON’T BE NEEDING ANYMORE 

The tour starts at the Suggadinbach stream. At the entrance 

to the Gargellen mountain forest, everybody 

can choose a stone and pass all their worries and 

dark thoughts on to it. We then place the stone on the 

ground at the edge of the forest, leaving all our worries 

outside and then very formally enter the forest through 

an actual gateway. 

here and now. And I can feel myself relaxing. After that, 

we walk through the Vergaldner Forest barefoot, cross 

an icy stream and end up in a small clearing. Here, we 

are left to do whatever we want. I just sit there and enjoy 

the moment like a child. 

Gerlinde tells us about the forest ecosystem, flowers 

and medicinal herbs, and lets us know that we’ve just 

set foot in the plants’ and animals’ living room. She 

makes us feel awestruck and treat the surroundings 

with due respect. 

And now we finally start the actual forest bathing. Various 

awareness and perception exercises help us experience 

the forest with all of our five senses. I can really 

feel how I’m being grounded. How I’m arriving in the

A MENTAL PICTURE TO 

BETTER MANAGE STRESSFUL SITUATIONS 

Gerlinde has two major concerns on this tour. On the 

one hand, she wants to familiarise us with nature. And 

on the other, she wants to provide us all with a tool to 

stay calm in stressful situations. It definitely worked for 

me. The view of the forest became deeply ingrained in 

my brain, with all its colours, the rays of sunshine and its 

shapes. I will think of it in future when I’m in a rage. I’ll 

take a deep breath, envision the picture of the forest and 

then calm down. 

Finally, we all craft something from the things around us 

as a way to thank the forest. Then we purposefully exit 

the forest. We arrive at the valley station 15 minutes later. 

We say our goodbyes to Gerlinde and I let her know 

right away that I already feel like a whole new person after 

the past five hours. F

reach their destination at 2,074 metres 

above sea level on the e-bike and on 

foot and return with many impressions

CONQUER THE MUTTJÖCHLE WITH BIKE GUIDE MARKUS 

1,500 vertical metres to overcome. The destination is at 2,074 metres 

above sea level. How is that supposed to work? This becomes possible 

in the Montafon on an e-mountain bike & hike tour. What makes it so 

special? First, you ride up many vertical metres on your e-bike, thus accomplishing 

a fair amount of the overall distance. Then you go on an easy hike 

to reach the destination. On this tour, it’s the Muttjöchle in the Silbertal. 

But let’s start at the beginning. My group and I meet up with bike 

guide Markus Fessler-Jenny at 9.30 am at the Aktivpark Montafon in 

Schruns-Tschagguns. Those who don’t own an e-bike, like me, can rent 

one from the local sports retailers. Then we all introduce ourselves and 

complete some brief technical training on the e-bike. I learn how to handle 

the bike properly, how to correctly set off uphill and whatever else I 

need to pay attention to. 

And then we’re off. We ride to the Silbertal together. Markus tells us 

about the mining that used to take place here centuries ago. And how 

it influenced the culture and language of the Montafon. From there, we 

continue towards the Wasserstubental. Suddenly something in me shifts 

and I sense I’m not the only one. Everything quiets down inside and 

around us. The valley opens up along the river and the only thing I can 

hear is nature. The deceleration sets in and I calm down.

The route leads to the Lower and the Upper Wasserstubenalpe. This 

is where alpine dairyman Hans invites us in for a short break to have a 

drink. On the way back, we’ll stop by for a decent snack. F

Then we head on to the Sonnenkopf Bahn 

summit station where we park our e-bikes. 

This is where the hiking part of the tour begins. 

We hike all the way up to the summit of 

the Muttjöchle on foot. It takes about an hour. 

Beautifully hilly, going up and down, and only 

the last part leading up to the summit cross is 

really steep. But we are sufficiently rewarded. 

The view is simply stunning. The phenomenal 

all-round view features the mountains of 

the Rätikon, Verwall and Silvretta as well as 

the Lechtal Alps. I feel both gigantic and miniscule 

up here. Gigantic because I made it all 

the way up here and miniscule because of the 

massive mountain landscape surrounding me.

COPPER KETTLE AND 

MONTAFON SURA KEES 

After a nice break, we head back to our starting 

point. Markus shows us how to go downhill 

correctly on our e-bikes. After such good 

coaching, I gladly ride back to the Upper Wasserstubenalpe. 

Hans is already waiting with a 

wonderful snack. Montafon Sura Kees, which 

is made here on the alpine pasture, bacon, 

slices of bread with butter, fresh milk and buttermilk. 

And even hard liquor is offered to finish 

with. Before we leave, we all get to catch 

a glimpse of the copper kettle in which the 

famous Sura Kees is produced. I am blown 

away, not only by the taste of the cheese, but 

also by the kindness of the alpine dairyman 

and of course also by my own achievements 

so far. 

Perfectly fortified and happy, we start the 

descent. The path leads us back out into the 

valley and to our starting point. Markus is an 

authentic guide who guided us safely along 

the way and has extensive knowledge of the 

history, flora and fauna, and the surroundings. 

My conclusion: I’m extremely proud of 

and very happy with myself. Because I’ve just 

completed a seven-hour tour, travelled a total 

of 44 kilometres and conquered 1,500 vertical 

metres. I enjoyed the most incredible views, 

found complete peace in myself and fuelled 

my lungs with so much fresh air for the first 

time in ages. P

HOW IS LIFE UP BY 

THE ALPINE PASTURES 

It is a life in and with nature. Life here is 

wonderful. We live in quite a confined space 

and there is no television, just a radio. The 

alpine pasture is located some distance 

away in a beautiful valley basin. But it is 

close enough to the Sonnenkopf for many 

mountain bikers and hikers to pass by. We 

go with time here and not against it. And we 

pass that on to the cows. Because there are 

times when they don’t even come close to a 

barn for five weeks. They are even milked on 

the pasture. And are only fed with grass and 

hay. I’m convinced that it’s possible to taste 

this tranquillity and this natural approach 

to things in the milk and the Sura Kees. 

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL 

ABOUT THE WASSERSTUBENALPE? 

The Lower and the Upper Wasserstubenalpe 

belong together, but only the upper one is 

farmed. Namely from the middle of June 

until the middle of September. The Wasserstubenalpe 

is a typical Montafon alpine pasture 

that specialises in the art of producing 

“Sura Kees”. We are located at 1,734 metres 

above sea level in the Silbertal and cultivate 

approximately 120 acres of pasture. We 

have dairy cows, breeding cows, calves, cattle 

and alpine pigs. Last summer, we produced 

3,500 kilos of Montafon Sura Kees 

and 1,400 kilos of Montafon alpine butter 

from 35,000 litres of milk. And managed to 

sell all of it by the end of September. 

HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT 

PRODUCING SURA KEES? 

Well, Sura Kees is a low-fat cheese that is 

slightly sour but mild. It is very healthy and 

can be used in multiple ways. Making it is 

an easy process. After milking the cow, the 

milk is separated into cream and skimmed 

milk in a centrifuge. The skimmed milk is 

refrigerated and then heated to 28 degrees 

Celsius in a copper kettle and soured with 

a bacterial culture. Twelve hours later, the 

cheese curd is cut and another two hours 

later it is extracted from the kettle and put 

into moulds. Within the next twelve hours, 

it has to be salted and then it’s already 

ready to be bought and consumed. 

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME 

DURING THE WINTER MONTHS 

Most people are curious about that (laughs). 

That’s when I work as a snow groomer 

driver on the Golm. I enjoy the snow and 

look forward to the next summer on the alpine 

pasture.

the Montafon. Beginners and 

advanced climbers will be

They can choose from 24 via ferratas and 

all kinds of different mountain ranges. In 

the Rätikon, Verwall and Silvretta, variety 

is guaranteed and ranges from waterfalls 

to the dark Gauablickhöhle cave 

to the dam at the Silvretta reservoir. The 

types of rock vary between bedrock and 

shiny white limestone cliffs. Our tip: An 

experienced guide makes the via ferrata 

experience even more personal and safe. 

FASCINATION 

Hansjörg Kasper is one of the local experts. 

He was personally involved in the 

construction of six via ferratas. So he 

knows the medium-difficulty loop tour 

(C/D) up the Gargellner Köpfe like the 

back of his hand. “Apart from the fun 

of moving, it fascinates me to always be 

able to try out something new,” the nationally 

certified mountain and skiing 

Premium guide 8/35/83/17 

tells us. The starting point is at the 

Bergbahnen Gargellen. The tour takes 

three hours including the ascent and descent, 

the climbing itself only lasts about 

1.5 hours.

TWO TRAILS, ONE DESTINATION 

Right at the start of the tour, you really 

need some stamina: “‘Give your all’ is the 

motto for the first 30 to 40 metres. But 

it’s definitely worth it,” says Hansjörg. 

The climbers enjoy the vast view into 

the valley and of the Rätikon and Verwall 

mountains. The path leads across 

slanted columns of rock to a fork. Here, 

you can choose between two options: 

the easier C-version leads off to the left 

and the more advanced D-version to the 

right. The latter includes the crossing of 

two rope bridges. A moment that guarantees 

a rush of adrenalin. 

Both routes include a ridge leading to the 

summit – and a beautiful view of Gargellen’s 

local mountain Madrisa, the Silvretta 

massif and the Swiss mountains. 

This adventure takes you up to lofty 

heights of 2,482 metres above sea level. 

For comparison purposes: the Schafberghüsli 

at the summit station is located 

360 vertical metres lower. 

BEING OUT AND ABOUT IN SMALL 

GROUPS IS MUCH SAFER 

“Always be careful with the iron footholds, 

but also the natural footholds,” 

Hansjörg instructs the participants of 

the tour up the Gargellner Köpfe. Either 

way, everybody is perfectly secured at all 

times. It is also important to him for everybody 

to know how best to handle the 

via ferrata set. The expert is particularly 

attentive to beginners at climbing. He always 

carries an additional rope with him 

for this purpose: “I use it to add some 

more support on potentially difficult 

stretches.” The participants of the tour 

are limited to a maximum of six people. 

“It is definitely recommended to be free 

of vertigo and have a good basic level of 

fitness,” he emphasises. Then there will 

be no limits to the fun on the via ferrata, 

which is located just a few kilometres

Vorarlberg’s highest mountain, 

Piz Buin. Jonny Marinac, 

who works mainly as a mountain and ski 

guide, calls this tour an “informative glacier 

hike with a mountain guide”. Last 

summer, it was booked out very quickly. 

It is not necessary to have glacier or alpine 

experience or a head for heights, 

you only need to be fit enough to walk 

for six to seven hours. F

rocks and turquoise-blue lakes, and 

starts on the Silvretta-Bielerhöhe. After 

around three hours, you reach the 

Vermunt glacier. The hikers familiarise

ice axe under expert guidance and then 

venture out into the jagged landscape.

Climate change has also left its mark in 

the Silvretta – a development that the 

mountain guides are constantly confronted 

with and openly address on 

the tours: “Many glaciers are becoming 

steeper or are disappearing altogether. 

For example, we have to walk much further 

to the glacier than we did ten years 

ago. Alpine hazards such as rockfalls or 

ice debris have also increased. This often 

presents a big challenge for us. This 

topic cannot be ignored, and we talk 

about it a lot with our guests during the 

tour,” says Jonny. 

On the way back, the group stops for a 

lunch break at the Wiesbadener Chalet 

to top up on energy. From there, it’s only 

another two hours back to the Bielerhöhe.

Everyone around the world is talking 

about environmental protection, including 

in the Montafon. But where is the valley already 

making these pioneering changes? 

And what courageous and unconventional 

ideas have already been implemented in favour 

of the environment? On the following 

pages, we present some examples with a 

signalling effect.

A place in the sun 

CLIMATE PARTNER 

The Hüttenkopfbahn, which commenced operations on the Golm in December 

2012, was a world first. Because the construction of the new six-seater chair 

lift was the first time that a photovoltaic power plant had been integrated 

into the station design and the chair station. “The power plant provides us 

with 60,000 kWh of electricity per year,” says Markus Burtscher, CEO of the 

Golm Silvretta Lünersee Tourismus, “which is about a third of the traction 

current we need each winter season.” Also, a software tool records all energy 

consumption in the ski area – from the lifts and the artificial snow blower 

to the snow groomers and the restaurants – and highlights the amounts of 

water, electricity and fuel required. “This energy monitoring system helps us 

spot excessive consumption in particular areas, so that can take action,” explains 

Burtscher. Golm Silvretta Lünersee Tourismus is also a member of the 

Carbon Neutrality Alliance 2025 and thus emphasises careful handling of the 

environment and resources. 

The white splendour 

SNOW MANAGEMENT 

Mother Nature is usually reliable, but not always – that’s why artificial snow 

blowers have become indispensable for the ski resorts. They can cover 44 

kilometres of pistes on the Golm with 100 percent artificial snow. How much 

water is needed for snow production depends on the natural snow. In winter, 

an average of 180,000 m 3 of water are used to produce approximately 

400,000 m 3 of artificial snow – which is free of additives. When the ice starts 

to melt, the water seeps through the ground and is thus fed back into the 

natural water cycle – so it doesn’t go to waste. But the ski resort has a clever 

and sustainable solution: the slopes have been equipped with a drainage 

system. The melt water is fed back into the drive water system and supplied 

to the Lünersee plant, in order to produce green electricity. “The conscious 

and sensitive handling of nature is of utmost importance to us. The natural 

cycle is closed by the drainage system,” explains Gernot Burtscher from Golm 

Silvretta Lünersee Tourismus. F


Nature’s warmth: 

The “almost” climate-neutral heater 

DISTRICT HEATING 

The biomass heating plant “Nature’s warmth in the Montafon” in Schruns 

provides environmentally compatible energy for our valley. Up to 270 buildings 

are connected to the grid, including various tourism businesses. New 

projects in the hotel industry rely almost exclusively on nature’s warmth, 

says CEO Georg Stampfer. When it comes to heating renovations, the almost 

CO 2 

-neutral heating system is first choice. “Because the warmth – which is 

made up of Montafon wood to a large extent – is fed comes directly into the 

house. Maintaining the heating room and the equipment is no longer necessary 

and you no longer have to worry about the oil running out.” In the biomass 

plant, the latest environmental technology filters fine dust particles 

so efficiently that the quality of the air has noticeably improved. If nothing 

else, the cultivation of the local protection forest is very important in order 

to safeguard its function for the future. Public biomass heating stations also 

provide clean energy in Bartholomäberg and in Gaschurn. 

The future on track 

MOBILITY 

Judging by the opinions of the mayors, hosts and cableways in the valley, the 

terminus of the Montafonerbahn will soon arrive in Gaschurn. All large ski 

areas from the Golm to the Versettla Bahn, important summer attractions as 

well as settlements should be accessible by rail in future without the need 

for transfers. The feasibility study commissioned by Stand Montafon and the 

province of Vorarlberg generally sees the railway extension in a positive light 

and provided valuable insights into the route, operational concept and investment 

costs. The first major milestone to a comprehensive mobility solution 

has been reached. 

The Montafonerbahn is already continuously improving the range of services 

for its passengers. A half-hourly service brought about a substantial increase 

in the quality of the train connection between Bludenz and Schruns. The Montafonerbahn 

travels 300,000 kilometres per year.

Regionality that tastes good 

REGIONAL PRODUCTS 

The “bewusstmontafon” (Consciously Montafon) association has set itself 

the objective of promoting the cooperation of farmers, restaurants and merchants 

throughout the valley. The logo guarantees the use of regional ingredients. 

By means of the product certification, the initiative ensures there is 

a piece of the Montafon in every product. So everyone can support the local 

producers and regional “Lädili” (shops). Bulk purchasers have a particular 

role to play in this regard. For the Silvretta Montafon, for example, it has 

always been important to nurture a fair partnership with the local farmers. 

“Both the regionality and the traceability of the food used are becoming increasingly 

important for us and our guests,” says Kurt Woltsche. The longtime 

chef de cuisine of the Nova Stoba mountain restaurant sources the majority 

of his products from local establishments: meat and meat products, 

milk products, as well as special kinds of honey and herbs. Where possible, 

he hunts for his own game. Woltsche greatly appreciates the power of innovation 

of the Montafon establishments, which are adapting to the wants and 

needs of consumers and creating new products.


The most eco-friendly drink 

MONTAFON SPRING WATER 

On a trip to the Montafon, PET bottles are very welcome to stay at home. Because 

refillable drinking bottles and water jugs are still the best packaging 

for beverages: in the Montafon, excellent quality spring water is delivered to 

your house straight from the mountain – without wasting resources and producing 

transport emissions, resulting in a much better life cycle assessment 

overall. The energy expended on production, transport, refrigeration and disposal 

is 1,000 times higher for bottled mineral water than it is for water from 

a Montafon kitchen tap. 

The Montafon is blessed with water. Having succeeded in drawing energy 

from it, it has also become a blessing for the region. It propelled all kinds 

of mills as early as the Middle Ages. At the end of the 19th century, the first 

hydropower plant was built, which transformed flow energy into sustainable 

electrical current. This development fundamentally changed the lives of the 

Montafon people. Several stations along the Aquaweg in Tschagguns show 

how abundant in water this region is, how pure the drinking water is and how 

diversely this giver of life from the mountains is used here. P

The carefully restored “Manga 

Hüsli” in Vandans wonderfully 

bears testimony to a 

traditional Montafon house 

– a composite construction of stone and 

wood that developed centuries ago from 

the Rhaeto-Romanic house and the 

Walserhaus. Those who know the characteristics 

of these exceptional buildings 

with their striking light-dark contrasts 

and roof shapes adapted to the 

alpine conditions will find and recognise 

them everywhere in the valley. Just like 

the “Manga Hüsli”, which so obviously 

calls out to everyone in sight: “Luag mi 

a!” (“Look at me!”). Pitch-black wood 

competes with the white limestone entry 

area. Host Reiner Cofalka runs his 

hand over the interwoven beams. “The 

wood was brushed and treated with citrus 

based oils. The whole area smelled of 

it afterwards,” Reiner explains. A fresco 

of the Virgin Mary flanked by angels 

hangs above the front door and cobalt 

blue keystones adorn the brightly shining 

masonry. Nobody really knows for sure 

where the name “Manga Hüsli” comes 

from. Maybe it derives from the last name 

“Mangeng”. It is much more obvious what 

the carved Saviour flanked by the Virgin 

Mary and Mary Magdalene on the façade 

is all about. “When the farmers moved up 

to the alpine pastures with their livestock, 

they stopped here to pray,” says Helga Cofalka. 

A prayer for a blessing is also visible 

under the gables over the entrance and on 

the back of the house. F

A TILED STOVE AS THE CENTREPIECE 

Twenty-five years ago, Helga and Reiner Cofalka purchased 

this gem of a house in an auction and immediately 

saw the hidden beauty in the very wretched looking 

building: “It struck us like a bolt of lightning when we 

saw it.” The restoration work took five years. With a great 

deal of care, the couple restored the original splendour of 

the farmhouse dating back to the Baroque period. In order 

to be able to preserve the existing structure, they did 

some research in ethnographic museums, sought the advice 

of experts and scoured the entire alpine region for 

original fittings, hand-forged nails and solid wood doors. 

Reiner, who has since retired from his job as an art director, 

restored the ornaments on the façade himself. Those 

entering the house over the well-trodden doorstep will 

immediately notice the tiny kitchen window in the parlour. 

“That’s where the housewife could check on anyone 

entering while she was at the stove,” Reiner explains. 

The “Vorhus” (parlour) leads directly to the sitting room 

and the centrepiece of the house: the light-coloured tiled 

oven covered in tiny rust-red spots. The couple found 

someone to faithfully recreate it with its characteristic 

tiles, which are typical of the valley. It was once the only 

source of heat for the whole house.

HISTORY IN EVERY DETAIL 

Beside the oven with its comfortable little bench, your 

gaze is immediately drawn to the carved wall cabinet 

and the panelled ceiling. Both originate from the former 

Vandans Frühmesserhaus, which was demolished in the 

1960s. The painting adorning the ceiling of the sitting 

room had for years been lying in the attic of a farmer 

they made friends with. “When he heard we were restoring 

the Manga Hüsli, he gave it to us. And we found the 

name ‘Maria Viktoria Mangengin’ written on it. It was 

as if it was destined to end up in our house,” Reiner says. 

At the other end of the tiled oven you enter the “Gada” 

(side chamber) which was originally the adults’ bedroom 

and today is the dining room, which again leads to the 

kitchen. 

When you’re cooking on the old additional stove, you 

can peer through the window into the parlour and see 

a steep staircase leading upstairs. Instead of the chimney 

room, you’ll find a spacious living area under the 

roof and adjoining bedrooms. A door leads to the former 

shed. What used to be a storage space for tools and 

equipment is now a modern bathroom. The old firewall 

with its exposed bricks and a former barn door are a reminder 

of the once rough character of this part of the 

building. Back in the sitting room, you can sit comfortably 

on former church benches around the Montafon table 

and enjoy the view of the village and the valley. “The 

rural idyll virtually comes in through the window here,” 

Reiner enthuses. F

OF A MONTAFON HOUSE 

Alpine hall-cum-kitchen house 

Montafon houses are usually made up of two adjoining farmyards: 

the house and the barn are built right beside each 

other. In avalanche zones, the house is protected by the barn 

that stands right behind the farmyard. The Flurküchenhaus 

(houses that have a hall and kitchen in one room) is the 

dominant layout. The sitting room (“Stoba”) and the adults’ 

bedroom (“Gada”) or the side chamber (“Näbatkammer”) 

are grouped around the kitchen (“Kochi”) which is usually 

separated from the parlour (“Vorhus”). The “Kemmigschooß” 

(chimney room) is located right above the hall-cum-kitchen 

and the “Stoba- and Hinterkammer” (back rooms) are situated 

above the sitting room. 

Light-dark contrast 

The walls of the entry area, the kitchen and the chimney room 

are built from natural stone, plastered and whitewashed with 

lime milk. Stone walls were said to be more permanent, fireproof 

and resilient. They offer protection against avalanches, 

falling rocks and mudslides. The exterior walls of the sitting 

room, the side chamber and the rooms above are boarded 

with wooden beams, mostly made from local spruces, in a 

block construction and panelled on the inside. The sheds, 

which are usually built on the weather side, are clad with 

vertical boards.

For the purpose of thermal insulation, the snow remains on the 

slightly inclined gabled roofs (20 to 25 degree angle), which 

protrude beyond the house except on the side where the shed is 

located. Rough wooden planks prevent the snow from slipping 

and heavy battens with integrated flat rocks serve as a snow 

rake to prevent roof avalanches.

An atmospheric adventure with floodlighting awaits all night-time tobogganers 

in the Montafon. On the longest illuminated night toboggan run in Vorarlberg, 

you zoom from Maisäßdorf Garfrescha down into the valley on two runners. The 3 

km-long natural toboggan run on the Golm offers tobogganing fun for the whole 

family with an incline of up to 13%.
