One of the world’s largest countries, the
US comprises 50 states, each with its own
culture, cuisine and influences. This is the
land of the spectacular Grand Canyon,
the sizzling tastes and sounds of the Deep
South and numerous national parks whose
splendour and scale defy belief.
Discover the colonial charm of New England,
go in search of glaciers and bears in Alaska,
experience the Pacific paradise of Hawaii or
visit the glitzy cities along California’s golden
coast. There are so many sights to see on
and off the beaten track that one visit is
rarely enough.
Driving in the USA
Arguably the greatest way to explore the US is by
car, thanks to the country’s extensive network of
byways and highways. Driving allows travellers
to move around at their own pace via the wide
and easily navigable roads, and we offer a range
of vehicles for your comfort. Spend time meeting
the residents of charming lesser-travelled towns,
immerse yourself in the local culture and stop at
beauty spots to take in the fresh air. There are
plenty of renowned routes whisking you through
jaw-dropping scenery, not least California’s
Pacific Coast Highway, where you can follow the
coastline and enjoy lots of interesting stops as
you go. Then there is America’s most famous
road, Route 66. Established in 1926, it crosses
eight states, three time zones and through the
heart of the country. Although it is no longer
possible to drive the full length, it is still possible
to traverse sections of this iconic route.
Zion National Park, Utah
National parks
There are 63 national parks within the US –
legally protected areas dedicated to conserving
the environment for the enjoyment of future
generations. Each has been selected for its
natural beauty, unique geological features
and diverse ecosystems. Spread throughout
the country, these parks can be explored
independently or with a private guide. You may
wish to combine them into one itinerary, or add
them as extensions to an existing itinerary. They
provide irresistibly photogenic scenery, endless
opportunities for embracing the great outdoors
and accommodation with the ultimate view –
though the best-placed properties have limited
availability. See the towering sandstone cliffs
and canyons of Zion or Bryce, admire the large
sequoia trees and waterfalls of Yosemite, look for
wildlife and geothermal wonders in Yellowstone,
or go hiking in the wilds of Denali, Alaska.
