Tour overview
Uncover the mysteries of the Bay of
Naples, once one of the greatest centres
of classical Graeco-Roman civilisation,
with experts Dr Steve Kershaw or
Stephen Nelson. The excavated remains
of Pompeii and Villa Oplontis, entombed
in ash by the Mount Vesuvius eruption
of 79AD, provide a glimpse into this lost
world. Herculaneum, covered in mud
rather than ash, is remarkably well
preserved, with multi-storey buildings,
frescoes and mosaics on show.
The region’s Greek highlights include
Cumae, the Sibyl’s Cave and the
imposing temples of Paestum.

Expert lecturers
Dr Steve Kershaw
has taught Classics in a
number of establishments,
and now works for Oxford
University Department
for Continuing Education,
and the Victoria and Albert
Museum. He wrote and teaches Oxford’s
The Fall of Rome online course and
has been featured as an expert
contributor on the History Channel's
Barbarians Rising series.
Stephen Nelson has
extensive, specialist
knowledge of Italy's
art, archaeology and
architecture and a
particular interest in
southern Italy and sites
discovered off the beaten track. Stephen
is a practising sculptor, working in the UK
and in Italy and exhibiting internationally.
His work has been shown at the Royal
Academy and the Estorick Collection. He
has also curated exhibitions, including for
the British Council in Tanzania and Eritrea.

Day 1: Fly to Naples
Fly from London (regional connections
available) to Naples with British Airways. Enjoy
a panoramic tour of Naples and, after an
introductory lecture and welcome dinner, stay
at Habita79 Hotel (or similar) for 6 nights. (D)
Day 2: Naples
Guided tour of Naples, including visits to the
Monastero di Santa Chiara, Spaccanapoli and
Cappella San Severo with time for independent
exploration in the afternoon. (B)
Day 3: Naples
Visit Certosa di San Martino, then journey by
funicular to Naples’ Pignasecca Market. After
lunch, enjoy a tour of the city’s Duomo before
returning to your hotel. (B, L)
Day 4: Baia • Cave di Cuma
Begin today with a visit to Baia archaeological
park, including the impressive Baia castle,
which was built on the ruins of the imperial
palace and is now an archaeological museum.
Continue to Cuma, home to the first ancient
Greek settlement on the Italian mainland, to
see the remnants of Greek temples. (B)
Day 5: Pompei • Oplontis
Today’s sightseeing begins with a visit to

Pompeiii, highlights of which include the
basilica, the Temple of Apollo, and the oldestknown
Roman amphitheatre once capable of
holding up to 20,000 spectators. The tour will
then proceed to nearby Oplontis. This city was
also buried under a layer of ash when Mount
Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. (B)
Day 6: Herculaneum • Naples
This morning, tour Herculaneum, visiting Casa
d’Argo, a well-preserved example of a Roman
noble family’s home; the extraordinary mosaic
at Casa di Nettuno e Anfitrite; and the public
baths at Terme del Foro. Proceed to Naples
for an afternoon visit to the city’s renowned
archaeological museum. Enjoy wine tasting at a
local estate before returning to the hotel. (B)
Day 7: Naples • Fly to London
This morning, travel to Paestum prior to your
return to the UK. Sights include the Doric
temples of Ceres, Hera and Neptune. The
Tempio di Nettuno (Neptune) is the largest
and best preserved of the three temples with
only parts of the inside walls and roof missing.
Transfer to Naples Airport for your flight. (B, L)
