a season of exploration
acting, play-reading. These are not
separate disciplines — if you can act,
you can act through song, through
dance,” says Bradshaw.
And a summer-ending performance
of scenes and monologues will include
costuming and other elements of
technical theater that offer students
a glimpse into the art of production.
Both theater and hip hop students
will be able to take part, together,
in end-of-day “showcases,” an openmic
performance opportunity where
they can try out new skills or new
acts for their peers. They’ll also be
able to take advantage of the Arts
Center’s Creative Coaching, one-onone
counseling with teaching
artists, and In The Mix, NJPAC’s free,
student-directed program that allows
kids to collaborate on projects that
combine the arts with activism. (Last
summer, the In The Mix crew launched
their own podcast.)
While both the Theater Arts and
Hip Hop Arts and Culture programs
will be held at NJPAC’s Center for Arts
Education, another summer program,
the City Verses Jazz and Poetry
Summer Camp, will be held on
the campus of Rutgers University-
Newark, the Arts Center’s partner in
a three-year-long project advancing
and celebrating performances that
combine verse with jazz, supported by
the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Camp sessions will be co-taught by
NJPAC’s jazz faculty and Rutgers’
MFA poetry candidates.
for students focusing on either poetry
or jazz, who will then join forces in
the camp’s second week. In addition,
returning students who began the
program online will work together,
while newcomers to the program will
have their own cohort.
“This program has consistently
evolved to remain responsive to our
community and to our students,”
says Jennie Wasserman, City Verses
Project Director.
“It was enormously successful as a
virtual program, but as the pandemic
recedes, young artists are yearning for
face-to-face interaction, opportunities
to create art together in person, with
no screens between them. We can’t
wait to hear the work that comes
from these in-person collaborations!”
While the City Verses camp is
free, other camps require tuition.
However, scholarships are offered
to students and families via a short,
streamlined application process.
