drives the all-new electric Ford Mustang Mach-E...
Having spent a week driving Ford’s new
all electric SUV I feel qualified enough
to say it really does live up to its iconic
Mustang name. For the first time in 55
years, Ford is expanding the Mustang
family, bringing the famous Pony into the
electric age. The American automobile
was originally produced by Ford in 1964
and is the fifth best selling Ford car
nameplate.
The iconic design is one which car
enthusiasts have drooled over for
generations. And now that stylish design
and famous sportscar name is being
brought to Ford’s performance Battery
Electric Vehicle.
The 2021 Mustang Mach-E is equipped
with extended-range battery and
all wheel drive will deliver 0-62mph
acceleration in 6.3 seconds and has a
WLTP pure electric driving range of up to
335 miles. The rear-wheel drive Mustang
Mach-E has a 379-miles WLTP range.
You can forget range anxiety as
this Mustang uses intelligent range
calculations to draw on live data to
produce as accurate an available range
display as possible, taking into account
weather conditions on route affecting
capability and information from other
Mustang Mach-Es.
Earlier this year, Ford increased its
charging network threefold. Ford’s
UK network moved from almost 3,000
charge points to around 9,500 achieved
in partnership with bp. Mustang Mach-E
owners will enjoy one year’s free bp pulse
access, with a rapidly growing number of
high-power 150kW DC chargers, 50kW
DC chargers and almost 6,000 7kW AC
points.
Ford also offers customers its Ford
Connected Wallbox for at home charging
for all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles,
delivering up to five times the charging
power of a typical domestic socket.
For Mustang enthusiasts, the Mach-E
includes features such as customdesigned
vehicle responsiveness with
sportier steering controls, ambient
lighting, sounds tuned for an authentic
all-electric experience, and dynamic
cluster animations that are tied to driving
behaviour.
As a car for all seasons the new Mach-E
has an all-wheel drive system which
applies torque independently to the
front and rear axles to deliver impressive
acceleration and improved handling over
the rear-wheel drive model. Ford tuned
this system to provide excellent traction
on the road, rigorously testing the vehicle
in wet and snowy terrain to help control in
slippery conditions.
Making its debut is the nextgeneration
SYNC® communications
and entertainment system, that uses
machine learning to quickly pick up
drivers’ preferences which gets even
better over time, thanks to advanced
over-the-air updates. The huge 15.5-inch
screen and simple interface has no
complicated menus and features are
accessed with touch, swipe and pinch
controls that every smartphone owner
will be comfortable using. What took me
by surprise was when I was asked if I
wanted to call home. The intuitive digital
assistant had worked out that that was
what I did every day after work!
The SUV design provides plenty of space
for five passengers and handles 402
litres of luggage in the boot. There is an
additional 100 litres of storage space
under the bonnet.
From launch of the Mustang Mach-E,
Ford’s progress towards electrified
engines will accelerate to more than half
of its car sales by the end of 2022.
