WELCOME
Kia ora,
I hope you’re keeping safe and well.
With things changing so quickly and being back in level 4 lockdown, it feels like we’re
once again on the rollercoaster we boarded in March last year. My heart goes out to all
those who are suffering because of the pandemic, and I feel incredibly grateful for my
health & wellbeing. Having the opportunity to not only work during this time, but to be
part of a team where we can support others with their wellbeing is truly awesome.
Working with Sport Auckland and previously, Sport Waikato for a combined 10+ years,
people are often surprised to hear I don’t enjoy playing sport! Still, I love to keep active.
Being active and eating well means different things to each of us – there’s no one size fits
all.
I’ve seen our Green Prescription and Active Families programmes develop over the years
and am proud to be part of a team who deliver a flexible service, especially through
lockdown.
It’s inspiring to read what some of our participants have shared these past three weeks
and I hope you also gain lots from this newsletter.
Warm regards from my living room to yours,
Participants Appreciating our Support during Lockdown
“I have found the zoom meetings useful and surprisingly enjoyable. Just getting different
muscles working is freeing me up and taking away my pain. I feel I am making some
progress again and long may it continue. Cheers!”
“I have cut out bread and just try and limit the amount of rice I have. Actually, I’ve been
having a lot of soups lately. I’ve been trying to get more vege in the house, and had a win
last night.. I found broccoli fries in the supermarket and the 5 yr old liked them! Tonight it’s
courgette fritters! Thanks for checking in...”
“I have lost 15kg and I’m walking at least 45 mins per day. My diabetes level was down to
43. Thanks!”
“I am keeping with my healthy eating habits and daily exercise even with lockdown. It’s
actually easier for me because my husband is working from home so I have less stress
more help…”
“I am following your plate guideline with half plate of veggies, 1/4 plate healthy carb and
1/4 lean protein. I feel great and am working on keeping my stress down and getting good
sleep...”
“Obviously, lockdown makes things a little difficult. I have been working some big hours
but managing to get a short walk most days. I’ve lost about 5 kgs since we first met. Have
reduced alcohol intake. Otherwise, life continues!”
EASY CHEESY TAKEAWAYS AT HOME
As Auckland remains in alert level 4, home-cooked meals are becoming the norm but are you
running out of meal ideas the whole family will enjoy? Do you miss your takeaway treat night?
Whether you are looking for something quick and easy or have time on your hands to start from
scratch, these pizza recipes and fresh ideas will be sure to receive the tick of approval throughout
your bubble.
RECIPE
IDEA
1. Choose a base - tortilla, wrap, store bought pizza base, or you could try to make a cauliflower base!
2. Choose your toppings - tomato paste, hummus or your favourite sauce, some of our ideas are below
3. Bake at 200-220C for 8-15 minutes, a thicker base may need longer
Have you DOWNLOADED THE FOODSWITCH APP?
Simply scan a barcode to get its nutrition facts and healthier alternatives.
We use it to choose our pizza base, wraps, sauces and cheese.
Mexican inspired pizza
Spread each base with
salsa and top with
grated mozzarella
cheese, canned
black beans (rinsed
and drained), sliced
capsicum, red onion,
sweet corn kernels
and jalapenos (if you
want more kick!) You
may also like to or add
cooked/left over mince
or chicken. Optional to
add chopped avocado
on top before serving.
Edam and noble cheese
are also great choices
being lower in fat.
Vege pizza
Spread pizza bases with
your choice of tomato
sauce and top with your
favourite vegetables
such as: baby spinach,
sliced mushroom,
capsicum, courgette,
red onion, diced
tomato/halved cherry
tomatoes. Sprinkle with
grated cheese.
Optional to sprinkle
sliced olives, pine nuts
or sliced almonds and
1 teaspoon dried mixed
herbs over the top.
Lamb and aioli pizza
Season and cook lamb
steaks medium or
medium-rare. Rump is
the perfect cut for this
pizza as it’s lower in fat
which also makes it easy
to eat.
Spread pizza bases with
low-fat aioli, top with
sliced lamb, thinly sliced
red onion, red capsicum
and sliced mozzarella.
Once baked, drizzle with
siracha sauce or siracha
aioli and top with lots of
fresh rocket.
Salmon and mushroom
pizza
Spread each pizza base
with tomato sauce.
Top with reduced-fat
ricotta cheese, a 210g
can salmon (drained),
sliced mushrooms,
tomatoes, sweet corn
kernels and ½ tsp dried
thyme or oregano.
Lightly sprinkle with
grated mozzarella and
parmesan cheese.
Canned salmon is much
lower in salt and price
compared to smoked.
