<br />

rates—limited<br />

A procedure to reduce an <strong>in</strong>dividual’s<br />

behavior by provid<strong>in</strong>g a re<strong>in</strong>forcer if the behavior<br />

occurs less than a maximum amount<br />

with<strong>in</strong> a certa<strong>in</strong> time <strong>in</strong>terval e.g., only if<br />

less than 3 talk-outs occur dur<strong>in</strong>g a class is a<br />

token delivered to the child.<br />

return<br />

<br />

rates—spaced respond<strong>in</strong>g<br />

A procedure to decrease but not<br />

elim<strong>in</strong>ate behavior by provid<strong>in</strong>g a re<strong>in</strong>forcer<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>stance of the behavior that<br />

occurred after a period of nonoccurrence<br />

e.g., to decrease someone who is excessively<br />

phone call<strong>in</strong>g, only pick<strong>in</strong>g up after an <strong>in</strong>terval<br />

when that person did not call.<br />

<br />

rates (DRO)<br />

A procedure to elim<strong>in</strong>ate challeng<strong>in</strong>g<br />

behavior by deliver<strong>in</strong>g a positive re<strong>in</strong>forcer<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>terval of no occurrence of the<br />

challeng<strong>in</strong>g behavior (e.g., every 5 m<strong>in</strong>utes<br />

when Jason does not suck his thumb praise<br />

and a candy are given to him). If the challeng<strong>in</strong>g<br />

behavior occurs then the <strong>in</strong>terval<br />

starts over.<br />

return<br />

discrete trial tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

An approach to teach<strong>in</strong>g new behaviors<br />

where trials <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g presentation of<br />

an <strong>in</strong>struction, wait<strong>in</strong>g for the <strong>in</strong>dividual’s<br />

response, and provid<strong>in</strong>g appropriate consequences<br />

is performed.<br />

environmental enrichment<br />

Entails enhanc<strong>in</strong>g the quality of the<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual’s natural environment by add<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that behavior is less likely <strong>in</strong> future situations<br />

(Mart<strong>in</strong> & Pear, 2011).<br />

return<br />

ext<strong>in</strong>ction burst<br />

Whereby the behavior be<strong>in</strong>g ext<strong>in</strong>guished<br />

problem behavior may occur.<br />

return<br />

functionally equivalent<br />

replacement behavior<br />

A desirable behavior that serves the<br />

same purpose as the challeng<strong>in</strong>g behavior.<br />

return<br />

<strong>Functional</strong> Analysis<br />

An experimental method used to<br />

identify the ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g variables for an<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual’s challeng<strong>in</strong>g behavior.<br />
