<strong>Compos<strong>in</strong>g</strong> a Proposal<br />
Advisory Committee will be a valuable resource <strong>in</strong> this activity, which will likely result<br />
<strong>in</strong> a wider range of <strong>in</strong>terested employers <strong>and</strong> practitioners participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the advisory<br />
board established for the proposed master’s degree program.<br />
3) Fully assess the feasibility <strong>and</strong> options of establish<strong>in</strong>g the master’s degree program: An <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>terdepartmental range of faculty, staff, <strong>and</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istrators will be<br />
consulted concern<strong>in</strong>g the options available for establish<strong>in</strong>g the master’s degree.<br />
Faculty, staff, <strong>and</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istrator expertise can be drawn upon from a number of departments<br />
<strong>and</strong> programs both with<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> external to the College of Liberal Arts: the Department<br />
of English’s Composition Program, the Department of Communication Studies,<br />
the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Political Science, the Center<br />
for Language M<strong>in</strong>ority Education <strong>and</strong> Research, the Hauth Center for Communication<br />
Skills, the Writer’s Resource Lab, the College of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, the Department of<br />
Journalism, the College of Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Adm<strong>in</strong>istration, <strong>and</strong> the College of Natural Sciences<br />
<strong>and</strong> Mathematics.<br />
4) Draft an action plan for implement<strong>in</strong>g the master’s degree program <strong>in</strong> technical <strong>and</strong><br />
professional writ<strong>in</strong>g. Led by the pr<strong>in</strong>cipal <strong>in</strong>vestigator, faculty <strong>and</strong> staff <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the<br />
plann<strong>in</strong>g process will draft an action plan for the technical <strong>and</strong> professional writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />
master’s program. Draw<strong>in</strong>g upon the <strong>in</strong>put gathered <strong>in</strong> the consultation process detailed<br />
above, this document will outl<strong>in</strong>e the most feasible program structure as well as<br />
estimates of costs <strong>and</strong> available fund<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Throughout the plann<strong>in</strong>g, faculty <strong>and</strong> staff <strong>in</strong>volved with rema<strong>in</strong> cognizant of the<br />
fiscal climate likely to cont<strong>in</strong>ue for some time <strong>in</strong> California. Plans for hav<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
program generate, whenever possible, its own revenue streams <strong>and</strong> strategic development<br />
plans will be exam<strong>in</strong>ed along with traditional programmatic fund<strong>in</strong>g sources. In<br />
addition, throughout the plann<strong>in</strong>g process the <strong>in</strong>tegration of outreach to m<strong>in</strong>ority/<br />
underrepresented student populations will be a priority.<br />
Course release time will be provided to the Project Director by the Department of English<br />
<strong>and</strong> the College of Liberal Arts to facilitate this plann<strong>in</strong>g grant. (A normal workload<br />
at this campus is four 3-unit courses per semester.) Dur<strong>in</strong>g the preparation of the action<br />
plan as well as any ensu<strong>in</strong>g proposal development for fund<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> implementation,<br />
other faculty will participate as time <strong>and</strong> resources are available.<br />
It is important to note that the Department of English has the expertise necessary to<br />
develop <strong>and</strong> carry forward the plann<strong>in</strong>g process here, as well as the implement the resultant<br />
master’s degree program. In the last three years alone, three tenure-track faculty<br />
