Inter-Discipl<strong>in</strong>ary Press, 2004) <strong>and</strong> the author of Creat<strong>in</strong>g the Fictional Female<br />

Detective: The Sleuth Hero<strong>in</strong>es of British Women Writers 1890-1940 (Jefferson,<br />

NC: McFarl<strong>and</strong>, 2006). Recent publications <strong>in</strong>clude two chapters <strong>in</strong> books:<br />

one on Starbuck <strong>in</strong> the new version of Battlestar Galactica <strong>and</strong> one on the<br />

fiction of Mary Elizabeth Braddon for a collection on illness <strong>and</strong> disability<br />

<strong>in</strong> gothic literature. She has served as Director of the <strong>Technical</strong>/<strong>Professional</strong><br />

Communications M<strong>in</strong>or s<strong>in</strong>ce 2003.<br />

Carol Lipson is Associate Professor <strong>and</strong> immediate past chair of the Writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Program at Syracuse University. She directed the technical-writ<strong>in</strong>g courses at<br />

Syracuse University from 1979 until 1986, when the overarch<strong>in</strong>g Syracuse University<br />

Writ<strong>in</strong>g Program began. In 2002, she was elected as a fellow of the Association<br />

of Teachers of <strong>Technical</strong> Writ<strong>in</strong>g. She has published on the history <strong>and</strong><br />

theory of technical communication, on ancient medical writ<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> on ancient<br />

rhetoric more generally. With Michael Day, she co-edited a 2005 collection of<br />

essays entitled <strong>Technical</strong> Communication <strong>and</strong> the World Wide Web (Elbaum).<br />

With Roberta B<strong>in</strong>kley, she edited a collection entitled Rhetoric Before <strong>and</strong> Beyond<br />

the Greeks (SUNY Press, 2004), <strong>and</strong> a collection entitled Ancient Non-Greek<br />

Rhetorics (Parlor Press, 2009).<br />

Andrew Mara is an Assistant Professor at North Dakota State University <strong>in</strong> the<br />

English department. He began teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> research<strong>in</strong>g at NDSU <strong>in</strong> 2006. Dr.<br />

Mara earned an M.A. <strong>in</strong> Literature from the Pennsylvania State University <strong>in</strong><br />

1996 <strong>and</strong> a PhD <strong>in</strong> Rhetoric <strong>and</strong> Writ<strong>in</strong>g with emphases on <strong>Professional</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Technical</strong> Writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 2003. He comb<strong>in</strong>ed this academic experience with on-thejob<br />

expertise as a professional communicator at S<strong>and</strong>ia National Laboratories.<br />

Research <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong>clude posthumanism, rhetoric of technology <strong>and</strong> scientific<br />

progress, university <strong>in</strong>novation, <strong>and</strong> corporate <strong>and</strong> organizational use of new<br />

media. Dr. Mara regularly teaches the Introduction to Writ<strong>in</strong>g Studies <strong>and</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

Writ<strong>in</strong>g classes. In addition he also teaches courses <strong>in</strong> Invention <strong>and</strong> Innovation,<br />

Rhetorics <strong>and</strong> Poetics of New Media, <strong>and</strong> Electronic Communication.<br />

Jim Nugent is Assistant Professor of Writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Rhetoric at Oakl<strong>and</strong> University.<br />

He holds a PhD from Michigan Tech <strong>and</strong> an MA degree <strong>in</strong> English studies<br />

<strong>and</strong> technical writ<strong>in</strong>g from Ill<strong>in</strong>ois State University. His research <strong>in</strong>terests<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude neosophistic rhetorical theory, the teach<strong>in</strong>g of technical writ<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong><br />

certificate programs <strong>in</strong> technical communication. With Lori Ostergaard <strong>and</strong> Jeff<br />

Ludwig, he coedited Transform<strong>in</strong>g English Studies: New Voices <strong>in</strong> an Emerg<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Genre (Parlor Press, 2009).<br />
