Biographical Notes<br />

Diana L. Ashe is an Associate Professor of English at the University of North<br />

Carol<strong>in</strong>a Wilm<strong>in</strong>gton. She serves as Coord<strong>in</strong>ator of <strong>Professional</strong> Writ<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

UNCW while pursu<strong>in</strong>g research <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong> professional writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> composition<br />

theory <strong>and</strong> pedagogy, rhetorical theory, environmental <strong>and</strong> activist rhetoric,<br />

<strong>and</strong> issues <strong>in</strong> the profession. She has published articles on environmental <strong>and</strong><br />

activist writ<strong>in</strong>g, academic honesty, mentor<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> professional relations.<br />

Brian D. Ballent<strong>in</strong>e is an assistant professor <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Professional</strong> Writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

Edit<strong>in</strong>g Coord<strong>in</strong>ator for the English Department at West Virg<strong>in</strong>ia University.<br />

He holds degrees from John Carroll University, the University of Rochester, <strong>and</strong><br />

Case Western Reserve University. Before jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the English department, he was<br />

a senior software eng<strong>in</strong>eer for Philips Medical Systems design<strong>in</strong>g user-<strong>in</strong>terfaces<br />

for web-based radiology applications <strong>and</strong> specializ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> human computer <strong>in</strong>teraction.<br />

His research <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong>clude professional <strong>and</strong> technical communication,<br />

digital literacy <strong>and</strong> hypertext theory, <strong>in</strong>tellectual property <strong>and</strong> authorship, <strong>and</strong><br />

open source development communities. Among other projects he is currently<br />

research<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g a textbook, <strong>Technical</strong> Communication for Eng<strong>in</strong>eers.<br />

Kelly Belanger, Associate Professor of English <strong>and</strong> Director of the Center for<br />

Research on Writ<strong>in</strong>g, Rhetoric, <strong>and</strong> Public <strong>Discourse</strong> at Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Tech, has been<br />

a writ<strong>in</strong>g program adm<strong>in</strong>istrator at Youngstown State University <strong>and</strong> the University<br />

of Wyom<strong>in</strong>g. Her publications <strong>in</strong>clude Second Shift: Teach<strong>in</strong>g Writ<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Work<strong>in</strong>g Adults, coauthored with L<strong>in</strong>da Strom, <strong>and</strong> essays on critical pedagogy,<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g program development, basic writ<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> professional communication.<br />

Her current research focuses on public discourse about women <strong>and</strong> sports.<br />

Julianne Couch has been an Academic <strong>Professional</strong> Lecturer at UW s<strong>in</strong>ce 1998.<br />

She teaches courses <strong>in</strong> the Composition <strong>and</strong> <strong>Professional</strong> Writ<strong>in</strong>g programs, <strong>and</strong><br />

tutors <strong>in</strong> the campus Writ<strong>in</strong>g Center. Currently, Julianne is the department’s<br />

composition coord<strong>in</strong>ator, <strong>and</strong> works with graduate teach<strong>in</strong>g assistants <strong>and</strong> faculty<br />

mentors. Her recent publications <strong>in</strong>clude a book review of Scenes of Visionary<br />

Enchantment by Dayton Duncan for Great Pla<strong>in</strong>s Journal, (2005); an essay <strong>in</strong><br />

Ahead of Their Time: Wyom<strong>in</strong>g Voices for Wilderness edited by Broughton Coburn<br />

<strong>and</strong> Leila Bruno (2004); <strong>and</strong> the essay “My Lewis <strong>and</strong> Clark: Discovery is at the<br />

Core” for Heritage of the Great Pla<strong>in</strong>s (2004).<br />

Anthony Di Renzo teaches classical rhetoric <strong>and</strong> professional <strong>and</strong> technical writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at Ithaca College <strong>in</strong> New York State. A former copywriter, medical writer, <strong>and</strong><br />
