that it would be less expensive to hire a technical-writ<strong>in</strong>g specialist to their own<br />

faculty <strong>and</strong> create their own program.<br />

Yet they were cautious, for before send<strong>in</strong>g students to Syracuse University,<br />

they had tried such a hire. That attempt was not a success. They discovered<br />

how difficult it was to choose, evaluate, mentor, or support a faculty member <strong>in</strong><br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g, given that their faculty are primarily scientists or l<strong>and</strong>scape architects.<br />

So <strong>in</strong> the late eighties, I was consulted by the ESF Vice President to help them<br />

lay the groundwork for hir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> mentor<strong>in</strong>g such a faculty member. Soon, a<br />

talented part-time faculty member from Syracuse University’s Writ<strong>in</strong>g Program,<br />

one who had already taught technical writ<strong>in</strong>g to ESF students, was hired <strong>in</strong>to<br />

a tenure-track position at ESF. I was asked to serve on his annual mentorship/<br />

assessment committees while he was untenured, <strong>and</strong> then on his tenure committee.<br />

He was authorized to hire part-time faculty to help him, s<strong>in</strong>ce one <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

couldn’t h<strong>and</strong>le all the teach<strong>in</strong>g. Many of those hired also taught writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at SU, <strong>and</strong> at least one has s<strong>in</strong>ce been hired full-time at SUNY ESF. Four still<br />

keep a h<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g at SU. A Writ<strong>in</strong>g Center has been developed at ESF for<br />

its students, <strong>and</strong> a range of courses have been developed beyond the <strong>in</strong>itial <strong>in</strong>troductory<br />

course <strong>in</strong> technical writ<strong>in</strong>g. Though my work at ESF has been beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

the scenes, I have been able to watch the PTW program there become a unique<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g community, with its own traditions <strong>and</strong> practices.<br />

The new ESF faculty member began with a very different model than<br />

that implemented at Syracuse University. He had developed an <strong>in</strong>novative, challeng<strong>in</strong>g<br />

technical-writ<strong>in</strong>g curriculum for his own teach<strong>in</strong>g, focused on ethical<br />

<strong>and</strong> social issues <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> scientific <strong>and</strong> technical fields, especially those related<br />

to environmental studies. In this ESF model, other teachers hired to teach<br />

technical writ<strong>in</strong>g were asked to follow his basic curricular structure, with his<br />

help <strong>and</strong> mentorship, though with some degree of freedom. Some of the teachers<br />

who taught at both campuses, but were left to develop their own curricular<br />

designs at SU to fulfill Writ<strong>in</strong>g Program learn<strong>in</strong>g goals, commented on the difference,<br />

not<strong>in</strong>g the excitement of the experience at ESF <strong>and</strong> on the amount they<br />

learned from a brilliant curricular th<strong>in</strong>ker <strong>and</strong> implementer about teach<strong>in</strong>g technical<br />

communication. Two senior Writ<strong>in</strong>g Program part-time teachers clearly<br />

favored that model over be<strong>in</strong>g left to their own devices at Syracuse University<br />

for teach<strong>in</strong>g professional <strong>and</strong> technical writ<strong>in</strong>g. And the ESF faculty—all <strong>in</strong> science<br />

or l<strong>and</strong>scape architecture fields—expected a higher degree of consistency <strong>in</strong><br />

course content than is normally the case <strong>in</strong> English departments or writ<strong>in</strong>g programs.<br />

The local sett<strong>in</strong>g here helped lead to some of the particular approaches <strong>in</strong><br />

the development of this highly successful <strong>and</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g program, though others<br />

depended on the leadership proclivities of the faculty member hired. The first<br />

faculty member hired <strong>in</strong> technical writ<strong>in</strong>g has rema<strong>in</strong>ed the Director s<strong>in</strong>ce the<br />
