• Stress tools, not rules. S<strong>in</strong>ce professional <strong>and</strong> technical writ<strong>in</strong>g is practicedriven<br />

<strong>and</strong> context-specific, shun all abstractions. Technology, document<br />

design, media dynamics, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutional constra<strong>in</strong>ts should determ<strong>in</strong>e<br />

your program’s curricular philosophy, not the other way around. “Pass<br />

from Vulcan to M<strong>in</strong>erva,” Bacon advised (141). Move from praxis to theory.<br />

Never place theory before praxis. That, Bacon would say, is like build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a mansion from the roof down.<br />

• Historicize your subject. That means more than teach<strong>in</strong>g about the development<br />

of professional <strong>and</strong> technical writ<strong>in</strong>g. It means trac<strong>in</strong>g the discipl<strong>in</strong>e’s<br />

roots back to classical rhetoric, study<strong>in</strong>g the growth of various<br />

social <strong>in</strong>stitutions, <strong>and</strong> review<strong>in</strong>g the evolution of different media <strong>and</strong><br />

technologies. History provides your students with a formative narrative<br />

<strong>and</strong> connects your program to the humanities.<br />
