Writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Rhetorical Skills:<br />

While the other four tracks (<strong>and</strong> every English department) have the same<br />

worry about student writ<strong>in</strong>g, our worry is particularly <strong>in</strong>tense given the close<br />

relationship <strong>in</strong> the PW major of writ<strong>in</strong>g skills to professional opportunities.<br />

This is another po<strong>in</strong>t I emphasize to students <strong>in</strong> Writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Public Sphere:<br />

if you can’t write well, you’re not go<strong>in</strong>g to do well as a professional writer.<br />

Based on real-world dem<strong>and</strong> for professional writ<strong>in</strong>g skills, Paul Bender <strong>and</strong><br />

I want to emphasize <strong>in</strong> our writ<strong>in</strong>g courses audience awareness, knowledge of<br />

grammar, <strong>and</strong> critical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Real-World Connections:<br />

Of all the PW program’s connections to the workplace (publication practica,<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g workshops, course service-learn<strong>in</strong>g projects), our <strong>in</strong>ternship requirement<br />

is the most important. Our students generally f<strong>in</strong>d good <strong>and</strong> useful<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternships, <strong>and</strong> we must cont<strong>in</strong>ue to help students f<strong>in</strong>d them. We’ll cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

to exp<strong>and</strong> our relationship with local, regional, <strong>and</strong> national <strong>in</strong>ternship<br />

opportunities.<br />

Technology:<br />

Paul Bender <strong>and</strong> I agree with Kim <strong>and</strong> Tolley, who have recently written<br />

about their own PTW program at the University of Memphis—technology<br />

is important for their students to learn, but only one aspect of their professional<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g education (Kim <strong>and</strong> Tolley 385). Naomi has said that her<br />

company uses Adobe In<strong>Design</strong> rather than QuarkXPress, <strong>and</strong> while she wishes<br />

she’d learned In<strong>Design</strong> at ONU, she’s learn<strong>in</strong>g what she needs to know on the<br />

job. Our graduates seem to be adequately prepared for workplace technology<br />

requirements, but it’s up to us to keep pace with these requirements. It looks<br />

as if we’ll be add<strong>in</strong>g In<strong>Design</strong> to our Desktop Publish<strong>in</strong>g course at some po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2006.<br />

But while we must periodically upgrade our computer applications <strong>and</strong> our use<br />

of technology <strong>in</strong> our classrooms <strong>and</strong> courses, as a department we also agree that<br />

the emphasis of the PW program will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to be on writ<strong>in</strong>g skills, rhetorical<br />

sophistication, <strong>and</strong> a critical cultural literacy. We’d like this foundation to mediate<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st the vagaries of real world technological, corporate, or market changes,<br />

even as we keep track of <strong>and</strong> respond to those—<strong>and</strong> a host of other—changes.<br />
