onset cluster tend to be <strong>of</strong> either unknown or <strong>of</strong> Germanic origin, which helps<br />

explain why eleven <strong>of</strong> the word-initial CCs and both <strong>of</strong> the CCCs would not<br />

be attested in word-internal onsets even if syllabification allowed tautosyllabic<br />

consonant clusters word-internally.<br />

3.1.2.2 Consonant clusters in syllable coda position<br />

Because syllabification results in syllable onsets <strong>of</strong> a single consonant segment<br />

(cf. §2.2.3), only the coda <strong>of</strong> the initial syllable can host tautosyllabic consonant<br />

clusters in the consonant center. An inventory <strong>of</strong> these CCs is provided in Table<br />

3.11.<br />

Syllable codas in word-final position are more restrictive, as only three CCs<br />

and one CCC are frequently found in this position, while four other CCs are<br />

found in a very limited set <strong>of</strong> words; the attested clusters in word-final syllable<br />

codas are listed in Table 3.12 on the next page. The regularly occurring word-final<br />
