However, geminate segments represented by digraphs, such as for /ʃ/ or <br />

for /ʧ/ are written by doubling the initial grapheme, as in (10) through (12).<br />

Preaspiration is represented by when the preaspirated segment is the initial<br />

segment in the consonant center (cf. §2.2.2.4), as in (13) and (14).<br />

(13) /pɔʰtet/ båhtet ‘come’<br />

(14) /aːʰʧːe/ áhttje ‘father’<br />

If a preaspirated segment is preceded by a sonorant consonant segment, then the<br />

preaspiration itself is not marked by a grapheme <strong>of</strong> its own, as in (15) through<br />

For plosives, the preaspiration is evident nonetheless because the corresponding<br />

plain segments are spelled differently, using . However, the current<br />

working version <strong>of</strong> the orthography does not provide a way to distinguish<br />

between preaspirated affricates preceded by a sonorant segment, e.g., (17), and<br />

plain affricates preceded by a sonorant segment.<br />

In spoken <strong>Pite</strong> <strong>Saami</strong>, when the copular and auxiliary verb lä is preceded by<br />

a word ending in an open syllable, it is <strong>of</strong>ten encliticized as l on that preceding<br />

word. To reflect this in the orthography, lä is then written as ’l immediately<br />

following the preceding word, as in (18) and (19).<br />

(18) gunne lä dån → gunne’l dån ‘Where are you?’<br />

(19) dállke lä bivval → dállke’l bivval ‘The weather is warm.’<br />
