Assuming that any constituent which is the pragmatic focus can be marked by<br />

fronting, as preliminarily asserted in §12.2.1, then the fronting <strong>of</strong> the interrogative<br />

word is consistent with focus-marking. However, for constituent interrogative<br />

clauses, fronting is then obligatory. The rest <strong>of</strong> the clause is constructed<br />

syntactically just as freely as any declarative clause would be. While subjectverb<br />

inversion can occur, the flexible nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pite</strong> <strong>Saami</strong> constituent ordering<br />

prevents this from necessarily marking a clause as interrogative.<br />

It is worth noting that the discourse marker nå, which can be translated as<br />

‘well’ or sometimes ‘yes’, frequently precedes constituent interrogative clauses,<br />

as in (50). However, it is not obligatory, nor is it restricted to interrogative clauses.<br />

It is likely a discourse marker, perhaps simply indicating the speaker’s active<br />

interest in the conversation.<br />
