1. List the primary government <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry regulatory agencies that control advertis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> the advertis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

Government Regulation<br />

The United States government has numerous agencies whose m<strong>and</strong>ates <strong>in</strong>clude regulat<strong>in</strong>g advertis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> other market<strong>in</strong>g activities. These <strong>in</strong>clude the Federal Trade Commission, the Federal<br />

Communications Commission, the Food <strong>and</strong> Drug Adm<strong>in</strong>istration, the Securities <strong>and</strong> Exchange<br />

Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, <strong>and</strong> the Department of Agriculture.<br />

The Federal Trade Commission<br />

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) was established <strong>in</strong> 1914 to promote “consumer protection” <strong>and</strong> to<br />

monitor “anticompetitive” bus<strong>in</strong>ess practices. With<strong>in</strong> the FTC, the Bureau of Consumer Protection works<br />

to protect aga<strong>in</strong>st abuses <strong>in</strong> advertis<strong>in</strong>g as well as other areas such as telemarket<strong>in</strong>g fraud <strong>and</strong> identity<br />

theft. The bureau is also responsible for the United States National Do Not Call Registry, which allows<br />

consumers to opt out of receiv<strong>in</strong>g telemarketers’ calls on their home or mobile phones<br />

(https://www.donotcall.gov).<br />
