This perspective is a consumer-centric approach the agency uses to f<strong>in</strong>d unique <strong>and</strong> surpris<strong>in</strong>g ways for<br />

clients to connect with <strong>and</strong> engage their target audiences. For example, <strong>in</strong>stead of us<strong>in</strong>g traditional<br />

methods <strong>and</strong> messag<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>crease awareness of Qwest Wireless among high school students, Qwest<br />

worked with SS+K to design an urban game called ConQwest that <strong>in</strong>volved teams of students, newly<br />

created semacodes for use on cell phones, <strong>and</strong> giant <strong>in</strong>flatable game pieces. Semacode is a trade name for<br />

mach<strong>in</strong>e-readable two-dimensional black <strong>and</strong> white symbols that act as “barcode URLs.”<br />

True to their political roots, the agency consulted with the Obama presidential campaign on driv<strong>in</strong>g more<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>and</strong> participation among young voters. S<strong>in</strong>ce its <strong>in</strong>ception, SS+K has ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed a high-profile<br />

nonprofit bus<strong>in</strong>ess, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g work with UNICEF, Share Our Strength, the Bill & Mel<strong>in</strong>da Gates<br />

Foundation, <strong>and</strong> the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s “LIVESTRONG” campaign.<br />

The agency underst<strong>and</strong>s how to work with short lead times <strong>and</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e for deep consumer <strong>in</strong>sights that<br />

animate its work. It’s a comb<strong>in</strong>ation that has made SS+K <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly popular with a grow<strong>in</strong>g roster of<br />

clients, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Delta Airl<strong>in</strong>es, Credo Mobile, Polo Ralph Lauren, AutoMart—<strong>and</strong> our client for this<br />

book, msnbc.com.<br />

After fifteen years <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess, all three found<strong>in</strong>g partners—Rob Shephardson, Lenny Stern, <strong>and</strong> Mark<br />

Kam<strong>in</strong>sky—are still active <strong>in</strong> the firm, <strong>and</strong> they’ve added other key partners such as Executive Creative<br />

Director Marty Cooke to cont<strong>in</strong>ue to provide fresh ideas <strong>and</strong> leadership.<br />
