to help with social causes that are <strong>in</strong> the public <strong>in</strong>terest. Go to the organization’s Web site <strong>and</strong> review the<br />

current public service campaigns. Pick one of these campaigns <strong>and</strong> critique the execution effort. Be sure<br />

to exam<strong>in</strong>e the creative itself, prospective target audiences, <strong>and</strong> locations of the message boards. After<br />

exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>formation, assess the usefulness of outdoor advertis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> public service advertis<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Daniel Starch was one of the advertis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry’s first researchers. He developed the famous Starch test<br />

that has been used to test advertis<strong>in</strong>g effectiveness. The Starch test is still <strong>in</strong> existence today. Us<strong>in</strong>g Google<br />

or another search eng<strong>in</strong>e, research Daniel Starch <strong>and</strong> his famous readership effectiveness test<br />

(see http://www.starchresearch.com). Us<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>formation you f<strong>in</strong>d, compare the Starch test with other<br />

advertis<strong>in</strong>g readership effectiveness tests you will f<strong>in</strong>d mentioned dur<strong>in</strong>g your general search. Summarize<br />

your f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs on Starch <strong>and</strong> other sources of readership effectiveness. What are the similarities <strong>and</strong><br />

differences between the tests? Which one do you th<strong>in</strong>k has the most potential for advertis<strong>in</strong>g research?<br />

AD-VICE<br />

1. F<strong>in</strong>d a nationally advertised product that uses both broadcast <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>t advertis<strong>in</strong>g. Collect (or describe)<br />

samples of the product’s advertis<strong>in</strong>g from both the broadcast <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>t media. Briefly describe which of<br />

the general media formats provides the best execution of the product’s advertis<strong>in</strong>g. Expla<strong>in</strong> your position.<br />

Be specific <strong>in</strong> your justifications.<br />

2. Assume that you have just been hired to devise a new outdoor advertis<strong>in</strong>g campaign for Coca-Cola; design<br />

(or characterize) two ads for any Coca-Cola product for the outdoor medium. One ad should be for the<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ard outdoor poster. The other ad should be for some new technological form of outdoor advertis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(such as mentioned <strong>in</strong> the chapter). Critique your creative effort. Which execution is best? Why?<br />
