2. Marketers believe that early adopters can make or break a new product launch. Describe the early<br />

adopter <strong>and</strong> his or her function. Pick a new product that has recently been <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>and</strong> demonstrate<br />

how early adopters could have created, or did create, a “buzz” for the product. How should advertisers<br />

reach early adopters with messages? Expla<strong>in</strong> your rationale.<br />

3. How do you learn about br<strong>and</strong>s? The question is not easy to answer. Th<strong>in</strong>k for a few m<strong>in</strong>utes about all the<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation you process about br<strong>and</strong>s dur<strong>in</strong>g a s<strong>in</strong>gle day; create a diary that lists that <strong>in</strong>formation as you<br />

receive it. Keep the diary for a few days. Compare your results with others. What common threads with<br />

your peers do you f<strong>in</strong>d? What unique ways did br<strong>and</strong>s attempt to communicate with you? Comment on<br />

what you observed <strong>and</strong> your conclusions about your diary.<br />

4. Describe a br<strong>and</strong> community <strong>and</strong> a consumer tribe. Discuss similarities <strong>and</strong> differences. Are you <strong>in</strong> one of<br />

these groups? Describe <strong>and</strong> comment. How could marketers <strong>and</strong> advertisers use br<strong>and</strong> communities <strong>and</strong><br />

consumer tribes to stimulate acceptance <strong>and</strong> purchase of their products?<br />

ETHICAL DILEMMA<br />

As the chapter <strong>in</strong>dicates, sublim<strong>in</strong>al persuasion is “a topic that has captivated the public for more than fifty<br />

years.” Basically, sublim<strong>in</strong>al persuasion attempts to reach consumers below the conscious thought or<br />

awareness threshold. Validity of the technique is, however, open to serious question by scholars <strong>and</strong><br />

critics. Review material on sublim<strong>in</strong>al persuasion <strong>in</strong> the chapter section <strong>and</strong> use a search eng<strong>in</strong>e of your<br />

own choos<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>d additional <strong>in</strong>formation. Be sure to review historical work by Wilson Brian Key dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

your <strong>in</strong>vestigation. Once you underst<strong>and</strong> the concept of sublim<strong>in</strong>al persuasion <strong>and</strong> its colorful history, take<br />

an ethical stance either for or aga<strong>in</strong>st the technique. Support your position. Describe any examples that<br />

would help you defend your position. Participate <strong>in</strong> a class discussion <strong>and</strong> present your position <strong>and</strong><br />

f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
