AFGHANISTAN THE FUTURE OF ARTS AND A
FREE SOCIETY IN PERIL
REPORTER: Adam EMAIL: adamsart@desertdailyguide.com Web: coming soon
Afghanistan art reflects their history from
ancient times to the present.
It is a country that is rich in diversity due
to the numerous peoples and military
campaigns that have invaded the
area throughout its history. Some of
the invaders include Alexander the
Great, Mauryas, Muslim Arabs, Mongols,
British, Soviets, and most recently the
United States. It has been called “The
graveyard of empires” reflecting the
numbers of invaders that have found
this land to be unconquerable
8
Farming in Afghanistan is traced back
to 50,000 years and is thought to have
been one of the earliest areas where
farming was practiced. The geography
of the country is mountainous with plains
in the north and southwest. The Art of
Afghanistan spans many centuries and
reflects the various invading entities.
Hindu and Buddhist influences are of the
most significant influences in the early
art which appeared when the Silk Road
was established during the first century
BC. Afghanistan
BY RICHARD BURNETT
Montreal’s famed Black &
Blue turns 30
Montreal will let the good times roll again
when the Bad Boy Club Montréal, aka
BBCM Foundation, hosts the 30th edition of
its world-renowned Black & Blue Festival
from October 7 to 11 during the long
Canadian Thanksgiving weekend and U.S.
Columbus Day Weekend.
After its 30th-anniversary edition was
postponed in 2020 because of the
COVID-19 pandemic, the festival’s
organizing committee has been working
with municipal authorities and Quebec
public health officials to plan all possible
2021 event scenarios, to make sure they
conform to all COVID-19 pandemic
sanitation measures to ensure the safety
of all partygoers and employees.
18
Canada reopens to tourists
Since August 9, fully-vaccinated citizens
and permanent residents of the United
States are eligible to enter Canada.
Visitors must upload proof of vaccination
status through Canada’s ArriveCAN
system before their trip. Other foreign
nationals who qualify as fully-vaccinated
will be eligible for entry into Canada
beginning in September. However things
are changing quickly with the Delta
variant. For the latest updated information
about travelling to Canada, visit mtl.org.
“We hope the situation in October
will allow us to hold as many face-toface
events as possible,” says BBCM
Foundation president and founder Robert
J. Vézina.

“That’s why we’re setting up different
scenarios for each activity, so that we can
adapt to the reality of the moment when
we’ll know exactly what to expect.”
“Breath of fresh air”
If anybody can pull this off, it is Vézina.
Over three decades, with his sure hand at
the helm, BBCM and Black & Blue Festival
have overcome many obstacles big and
small.
After the violent July 1990 Montreal police
raid on Sex Garage, an underground loft
party widely considered to be Montreal’s
Stonewall, Vézina came up with the idea
to host an all-night dance party.
“Montreal needed a breath of fresh air
back then, especially in the gay nightclub
scene which was a bit lame at the
time,” Vézina says. “We first wanted to
create a new, fun and thematic event in
Montreal and we invited our friends from
Toronto, Boston and New York to join us
at the beginning. But we made sure we
had the approval of the police to do an
after-hours, with all our permits in order to
avoid the problems encountered at Sex
Garage. After the first two Black & Blue
events in 1991 and 1992, we knew we had
a successful formula and decided to do it
on an annual basis.”
After drawing 800 revellers to their first
dance party in an abandoned bank
in 1991, Black & Blue quickly became
one of most successful circuit parties on
the planet, filling many of Montreal’s
legendary and iconic venues over the
years, like Olympic Stadium, MTELUS
and the Palais des Congrès (Montreal
Convention Centre).
The Black & Blue all-night main event
dance party soon anchored the Black
& Blue Festival of socio-cultural activities
and events which have generated more
than $500 million in local economic and
tourism spin-offs over three decades.
Supports HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ
organizations
In addition, the registered non-profit
BBCM Foundation’s simultaneous goal is
also to support organizations that provide
direct assistance to people living with HIV/
AIDS, as well as to help LGBTQ community
groups. The first Black & Blue party raised
$3,500 for AIDS Community Care Montreal
in 1991, and the BBCM Foundation has
since helped various HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ
organizations with donations, free ticket
allocations for various groups to use for
their own fundraising activities as well as
promotional support, for an overall value
well above $2 million.
This is no mean feat for BBCM which –
unlike many other prominent cultural
promoters – is chronically underfunded by
all levels of government.
“We continue to draw tourists from
around the world and help support
local community organizations,” says
Vézina who in 2007 was also founding
vice-president of Fierté Montréal Pride
which organizes the largest Pride in the
Francophonie. “But getting government
support and private sponsors is still a
constant battle,” explains Vézina.
All-star DJs and entertainers
Meanwhile, BBCM spends what is
necessary to ensure their Black & Blue
main event is of the highest quality,
earning accolades for their high
production values from such
including, China, India, Persia, Greece,
and Italy.
Art of Islamic style brought changes from
the early Grecco-Buddhist art as Islam
was adopted in the area. Refined tile
work in Mosques reflected designs from
Chinese ceramics and the influence
of Afghan artists by Islamic design.
Giant Buddha statues erected during
this time were destroyed by the Taliban
which angered much of the world. The
Pakistani foreign minister urged other
nations not to shun the Taliban for this
act, in that it may give them an excuse
to make it more difficult for the Afghan
people who they will now govern.
22
In recent history, Afghanistan became
a pawn in the early 1900s between the
British Indian and the Russian empires. In
1926 Afghanistan became independent
and free of other country’s dominance
until the early 1970s when infighting
caused it to become a socialist state
which provoked the Soviet-Afgan war
in the 1980s. In 1996 the Taliban a
militaristic Islamic fundamentalist group
largely responsible for driving out the
Russians, became in control of the
country until they were defeated by the
United States after invading Afghanistan
following the 911 attack by terrorists who
were emerging from Afghanistan.
Now that the U.S. has decided to
leave Afghanistan after 20 years of
occupation and nation-building which
did provide an outlook for a more
contemporary lifestyle for the natives.
TOLL ROAD BANDITS
AGREE TO SETTLE!
UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR
THE CENTRAL DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA,
SOUTHERN DIVISION
If You Drove On the 73, 133, 241 and/
or 261 Toll Roads in Southern California
or Provided Information to the Operator
of those Toll Roads,You May Be Entitled
to a Payment from Two Class Action
Settlements.
A federal court directed this notice. This
is not a solicitation from a lawyer.
Two Settlements have been reached
in a class action lawsuit about whether
TCA, 3M, and BRiC (the “Defendants”)
improperly collected and shared with
third parties the “Personally Identifiable
Information” (“PII”) of operators of motor
vehicles that used the 73, 133, 241, and/
or 261 Toll Roads in Orange County,
California or other individuals whose PII
was provided to Defendants.
Both Settlements cover vehicle
operators, but one covers a shorter time
period.
The settlement between Plaintiffs and
the TCA and BRiC (“TCA Settlement”)
covers the time period from April 13,
2015 to June 16, 2021.
The settlement between Plaintiffs and
3M (“3M Settlement”) covers
from April 13, 2015 to June 30, 2015.
You can receive benefits under both
Settlements if you are a member of both
Settlement Classes.
The Defendants deny the allegations in
the lawsuit. The Court has decided that
certain allegations against Defendants
lack merit but has not ruled on the
remaining claims.
modern lifestyles and current artistic ideas while rejecting and destroying most
artistry that does not fit the fundamentalist view is a dilemma. The leaders of the
Taliban do not appear to have any idea of what they are doing. The movements’
leaders are primarily young sons of illiterate peasants, raised in war-torn battlefields
and refugee camps with a limited education that is rote and sectarian in archaic
religious beliefs. It is understandable how they have a pessimistic and minimalistic
view of their future and that of the country. President Biden has referred to the
Taliban as a “rag-tag” group which has been obvious in their behavior. Women
have been forced to wear primitive burkas again. Visual images of people have
been covered or destroyed. Posters in beauty shops have been spray-painted over
with the excuse of a strict interpretation of Islamic law. Reports of several statues
in the Afghanistan National Museum have been destroyed and frescos behind
the Great Buddha have been hacked from the walls and fresco paintings have
been destroyed as well. Paintings in the Kabul Art Museum that have figures or
images that are not accepted by the primitive Islamic beliefs have been painted
over by staff with watercolors that can be removed in the future, to protect their
destruction.
Theater or performance art in
Afghanistan consists primarily in Buzbaz
a musical puppetry where the
puppeteer guides the marionette
or puppet while playing a dambura
instrument during the performance. This
form of theater will probably continue to
be allowed providing the show adheres
to the Islamic requirements.
The Taliban have indicated that
they have changed over the past
20 years and that they will allow
women to continue to participate
in society providing they adhere to
the Islamic fundamentals of their
appearance. Previous promises
have not been honored the future
will show if their promises now
show any integrity. One thing is
certain the near future of the arts
and artists and a free society in
Afghanistan is uncertain.
publications as The New York Times
and The Advocate. Perhaps the most
remembered installation is the 25,000 lit
candles that greeted partygoers on the
outfield of Olympic Stadium at the 2000
edition of the Black & Blue main event.
Performers over the years include pop
and dance legends like The Human
League, Martha Wash, Ultra Naté,
Loleatta Holloway and Kristine W., while
all-star DJs include Danny Tenaglia,
Victor Calderone, David Morales, Hernan
Cattaneo, Susan Morabito, Angel Moraes,
Roger Sanchez and Chus & Ceballos, as
well as Montreal’s own Misstress Barbara
and Mark Anthony – Vézina’s fave DJ over
the years – who has spun for at least half
of the Black & Blue main events over 30
years, including the very first party.
“This is partying on a grandiose scale!”
Mark Anthony said in 2010. “My favourite
moment occurred during Black & Blue
1999 at noon, the end of the party, at
the end of my set. After the last song, I
looked down to the dance floor from the
DJ booth which was two storeys up! A
sea of bodies still stood there clapping
and cheering for more music! When the
lights came on I was blown away to see
about 15,000 people still assembled on
the dancefloor. It was a very magical and
surreal moment.”
Where gays and straights mix
Another key reason for Black & Blue’s
longevity is that it no longer is just a gay
party. While it remains predominantly gay,
longtime BBCM organizing committee
member Caroline Rousse says, “The Black
& Blue dance floor is one of the rare
places where nobody cares what your
30
sexual orientation is – except when you
want to pick someone up! This is the
really special aspect of the Montreal
crowd: gays and straights mingle together
and there is no homophobia. We also
encourage gay tourists – surprised to
see many straights at our party – not
to discriminate against heterosexuals.
Everyone is accepted and equal at our
event.”
“The gay core is still very present,
especially in the middle of the dance
floor,” Vézina adds, “but it’s a big
celebration for everyone. Young ravers
and many gay-friendly beautiful people
attend.”
Dance to the music
While some circuit parties have been
criticized over the years for widespread
drug use that can lead to unsafe
sex practices, BBCM works with local
organizations to promote safer sex and
responsible drug use so that the musicoriented
Black & Blue experience is safely
enjoyed by all.
Vézina also points out that sex on the
Black & Blue premises is a rarity and
not officially permitted. “Starting with
our performers, we don’t allow frontal
nudity,” he says. “There is cruising on the
dancefloor, but sex on the premises is very
rare. You’d have to find a very dark corner
for a very short time because our roaming
yet friendly security is present everywhere
all night. In any case, this event is about
the music, the special effects, the shows,
and about community spirit.”
While it’s true that Black & Blue has
become a well-oiled machine over the

past 30 years, Vézina has also come to
expect the unexpected. When asked for
his festival’s worst moment, Vézina doesn’t
miss a beat: “When the Hell’s Angels
strangely showed up in a huge uniformed
gang in an attempt to enter the main
event in 1996. Our event is obviously not
the style for such criminals… We had to
close the doors for quite a long time –
nobody could come in or out – until the
police got them to leave, and they have
never come back!”
Choice destination and new Carnival
Black & Blue remains one of the world’s
iconic circuit parties, but after decades
of boffo box office – in 2002, more than
80,000 people from all over Canada,
U.S.A., Europe, Australia, and South
America attended the many Black & Blue
Festival activities – Vézina says, “We’ve
decided to adapt our events to the
present-day realities of the circuit party
scene as well as the changing priorities.
That is why in 2018 we launched the
Carnaval des Couleurs (Carnival of Colors)
as a new innovative part of the festival.
The Carnaval is a series of musical and
mainly ‘live’ activities – hence not DJoriented
– that are totally free and open
to everyone, with the goal of bringing
together the LGBTQ and multi-ethnic
communities, to celebrate diversity and
inclusion and also to help to fight racism
and homophobia.”
Expect some surprises to mark the 30th
edition of Black & Blue whose main
event is titled XXX for its three decades
of success. The festival will also host its
popular Party Twinkle, Leather Ball and
Uniform Party, as well as its Carnaval des
Couleurs (October 9-10) in the Village.
“We get the most beautiful people from
around the world in Montreal during Black
& Blue,” Vézina says. “Our reputation as
a fun, thematic and sexually-charged
event started in 1991 when we invited our
good-looking friends to attend our very
first party. That’s how we got our bad-boy
reputation. It was a bit obnoxious, but it
worked. But the whole team, including
myself, we’re still taking this all one year at
a time.”
Palm Springs Gay Men’s
Chorus
Hires New Artistic Director
to Lead 23rd Season
“Sing Out Proud” Auditions
September 7
(Palm Springs, CA) – August 24, 2021...
The Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus
(PSGMC) announced today that Jerry
R. Soria-Foust has been hired as their
new Artistic Director bringing with him
extensive experience as the former
leader of the San Diego Men’s Chorus
and Opus Q – A Men’s Vocal Ensemble
among others. Soria-Foust was selected
after an extensive national search,
and succeeds Douglas Wilson who has
retired after seven successful seasons.
“It is a thrill to return to Southern
California, and to be selected as
the next Artistic Director of the Palm
Springs Gay Men’s Chorus, one of the
Coachella Valley’s premiere musical
organizations. Through its family-like
environment, its commitment to social
justice and community outreach, and its
exceptional performances, the Chorus
continues to prove it truly is ‘A Chorus
Like No Other.’
The past year has been a challenge for
all of us, with a worldwide pandemic
that halted the performing arts we
cherish and a nationwide call for racial
justice in America. As the Chorus enters
its 23rd season, it is more important
than ever that the community hears
our voices and experiences our
message of hope and resilience. I hope
everyone will join me and the members
of this remarkable organization for an
unforgettable season,” said Jerry R.
Soria-Foust, Artistic Director, PSGMC.
PSGMC will be holding its “Sing Out
Proud” open call auditions September
7 at 6:00p.m. at the Mizell Center, 480
South Sunrise Way in Palm Springs. This
special evening of camaraderie will
also be an opportunity to volunteer and
get involved with one of the chorus’
many committees. Interested singers
can also attend the open rehearsal
that night, September 7 at 7:00p.m. to
experience what it is like to perform
with the chorus and meet its members.
PSGMC continues to build ‘A Chorus
Like No Other,’ with a commitment to
a high standard of excellence in their
performances. In the audition process,
PSGMC will be recruiting singers for
the main chorus, but also for their
small ensemble groups “Bruce
Top Tips for Homeowners to Prep
Financially for Natural
Disasters
(StatePoint) Climate change is making natural
disasters more extreme, from extending the
duration of disaster seasons to increasing the
intensity of fires, storms and floods. Indeed, the
U.S. Geological Survey notes that with increasing
global surface temperatures, the intensity
of storms will likely increase. The agency also
predicts coastal flooding to double in the coming
decades.
Health and safety are first priorities after a disaster,
but financial resilience is critical too. If you’re
a homeowner -- or a prospective homeowner
-- here’s how you can get prepared:
• Compile documents: Assemble important
financial documents. Store paper copies of all
files in a fireproof and waterproof box or safe,
or in a bank safe deposit box. Consider making
digital copies for easy accessibility. Store these
in a password-protected format on a removable
flash or external hard drive, in your fireproof and
waterproof box or safe, in a bank safe deposit
box, or with a secure cloud-based service.
• Understand your insurance coverage: Having
adequate insurance will ensure protection in
times of need. The extent of your coverage will
depend on where you live and what types of
disasters your location may be at risk for. Review
your policy annually and make changes or additions
as needed.
• Update documents: Regularly revisit and
update documents, particularly if you have
significant changes in your life, such as marriage,
death or the birth of a child.
• Go electronic: If you depend on regular benefits
such as Social Security, consider switching
to electronic benefits to protect yourself should
mail service be disrupted during a disaster.
• Know the plans: Stay up-to-date with the
emergency plans in your community, children’s
schools and place of work. Make a communications
plan for your own household and share it
with all the members of your family.
• Seek disaster relief: If your home has been
impacted by a natural disaster, contact your
loan servicer right away. Your loan servicer may
be able to extend a full range of relief options,
including: suspending foreclosures by providing
forbearance on your mortgage payments for up
to 12 months, waiving assessments of penalties
or late fees, and not reporting delinquencies to
the nation’s credit bureaus. About one month
before the end of your forbearance period, contact
your mortgage company to determine the
most appropriate option for re-establishing your
mortgage payments.
• Become a savvy homeowner: Familiarize yourself
with how to prepare your home for natural
disasters and extreme weather, as well as where
to find resources to help recover if disaster strikes.
Freddie Mac’s My Home website has a comprehensive
suite of tools and resources about
homeownership, including details on support
options if you are struggling to make your mortgage
payments, at myhome.freddiemac.com/
getting-help.
Natural disasters can strike at any time and with
little warning. However, proper preparation can
help you weather the storm.
• Start saving: If you’re able, start saving today.
Having an emergency budget allows you to react
quickly if you’re affected by a disaster. Plus,
households that have an emergency savings
account tend to fare better overall.
4 Good Reasons to
Vote NO on the Recall
1. COVID deniers carried racist, anti-Chinese signs to collect signatures on petitions to
recall Governor Gavin Newsom.
On January 31, 2021, in Los Angeles, promoters of the recall sought to gather signatures to trigger the
recall election by appealing to bigotry and spreading disinformation about the pandemic. 1
2. Those signature-gatherers shut down access to the vaccine and interfered with
Californians who had scheduled vaccinations for themselves and loved ones.
Promoters of the recall showed contempt for the autonomy and safety of hundreds of people waiting in
line to protect their own health and family members. The arrogance to impose their ideology over other
people’s access to medicine shows the malice and extremism behind the recall drive.
3. At the very same time as those COVID deniers shut down access to
vaccinations to promote their recall petitions, a beloved community
leader was dying of COVID just blocks away from their protest.
Ruby De Vera was a respected local advocate for veterans, immigrants, and people with
disabilities. She lived in the Mt. Washington neighborhood of L.A. and died of COVID
in hospital just four days after her 75 th birthday, on January 31, 2021. Ruby received a
kidney donation in 2018, which allowed her to celebrate her 50 th wedding anniversary
in 2019. Her husband Andy, also infected by the coronavirus, survived. Those who
promote the recall by denying the deadly fact of the pandemic insult the lives, loved
ones, and continuing impact of leaders lost to COVID like Ruby De Vera. 2
4. If you support civil rights and public health and oppose the spread of hate and disinformation,
you have a direct stake in defeating the recall. Please vote NO. Tell others.
