Miles Bates “Wave” House (1955)

Architect: Walter S. White

Dates open: February 21-23, $30

The Miles Bates House — known as the Wave House for

its curving roof that mimics the San Jacinto mountains behind

it — is being opened publicly for the first time since

its remarkable restoration. It was one of more than forty

houses in and around Palm Desert designed by local-born

Walter S. White. In 2018 this home became the first Palm

Desert landmark to be listed on the National Register of

Historic Places. Purchased that spring by Stayner Architects,

a family-run

architecture and development firm based in Los Angeles,

the Wave House has been lovingly and meticulously

restored to Walter White’s original designs.

Bohannan was diagnosed with prostate

cancer in August 2019. His reaction to the

news, his search for the proper treatment

through a maze of doctors and other survivors

and some difficult nights dealing with the

realities of cancer prompted him to write a

column to his readers in November 2019

about his cancer journey. In December he

underwent robotic surgery and returned to

work just two days before New Year’s Day.

He has been the golf writer and columnist for the

Desert Sun since 1986. A 1982 graduate of Cal

State Fullerton with a B.A. in Communications, he

worked at the Hi-Desert Star in Yucca Valley from

1982 to 1986 before joining the Desert Sun in 1986.

As the principle golf writer for the paper since then,

he has covered events on the PGA Tour, LPGA

Tour, PGA Tour Champions and other professional

events in the desert and throughout California. He

also covered high school, college and amateur golf

in the desert.

His columns and stories have won numerous

Associated Press Sports Editors and California

Newspaper Publishers Association awards. In

2012, he was named the California Golf Writers

and Broadcasters Association’s Media Man of the

Year. He is the author of two books about golf in

the Coachella Valley, “Fifty Years of Hope” on the

first 50 years of the Bob Hope Classic, and “Palm

Springs Golf: A History of Coachella Valley Legends

and Fairways” documenting the beginnings and the

rise of the game in the desert.

The American Cancer Society offers services

and programs throughout the Coachella Valley,

including transportation to appointments, wigs,

and lodging. Services can be scheduled using

the toll-free number (800) 227-2345 or visit www.

cancer.org. The American Cancer Society is

the largest non-governmental funder of cancer

research having invested more than $4.8

billion since the 1940s with 49 of their funded

researchers being awarded the Nobel Peace

Prize.

The American Cancer Society fights for every

life threatened by every type of cancer in every

community. The work we do impacts everyone

regardless of where the funds are raised. By

taking what we’ve learned through research and

turning it into what we do, we have contributed

to a 27 percent decrease in the overall cancer

death rate since 1991. This decline translates to

more than 2.6 million deaths prevented.

EBERHARD ANHEUSER, MEET ADOLPHUS BUSCH

“It is my aim to win the American people

over ... to make them all lovers of

beer.” - Adolphus Busch (1905)

Our founder, Adolphus Busch, journeyed to America

from Germany in 1857, determined to make his dreams

come true. Adolphus wasted no time once he landed in

St. Louis, and started work at a brewing supply company.

Among his clients was Eberhard Anheuser (the name

might sound familiar), who owned what was then known

as E. Anheuser & Company. Adolphus married Eberhard’s

daughter, Lilly, in 1861.

After fighting for the Union during the Civil War, Adolphus

joined his father-in-law’s business, bringing big, ambitious

ideas with him. Adolphus’s entrepreneurial spirit and sales

prowess contributed enormously to the brewery’s growth.

By 1875, Adolphus was named secretary-treasurer, and

in 1879, the company’s name was officially changed to

Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association. After Eberhard’s

passing in 1880, Adolphus became president.

A LESSON IN INNOVATION

Adolphus was drawn to St. Louis because of the city’s

large German population. But a large German population

meant a lot of beer, which in turn meant a lot of competition

for Adolphus and Eberhard’s brewery. Luckily, Adolphus

was a talented salesman with an eye for innovation.

He wasn’t about to be discouraged by competition.

Recognizing the need to expand outside of St. Louis to

places with a less-crowded beer market, Adolphus stayed

close to emerging technologies and developments that

could make expansion possible. One major development

was pasteurization, which increased the shelf life of bottled

beers by up to four months, and allowed for further

shipping. In fact, Adolphus pasteurized his beer before

America pasteurized milk.

Refrigerated rail cars also helped Adolphus ship his beer

across long distances, but they were expensive. He took

matters into his own hands and started a company to

build the rail cars faster, and for less money. A network

of rail-side ice houses followed shortly after, and before

long, Anheuser-Busch was taking the entire country by

storm.
