KICK-OFF 3PM
Ashville Holdings is rooted in construction and our history has morphed
from boots on the ground company found itself to with in-house very few basements to development and government
dig. So, Louisy went looking for work elsewhere.
infrastructure projects. I used to drive
“I knew Ashville who my building competitors Holdings were, as I encompasses every element in
would see their names on tenders,” he says. “So I the lorry, and
construction and went to them is all a and fundamental said ‘I can’t beat the others on part of all supply pump too.” chains.
approach worked, and one tipper-grab very soon
became three tipper-grabs and a tipper.
“Then Wandsworth banned grabs from taking
out of skips, and I began to lose work,” remembers
Louisy. “So we started buying skip lorries too.”
This was quickly followed by another change
in direction. “We would arrive at a job only to be
told we couldn’t load as a concrete lorry was there,
and that the concrete lorry was more important.
So we bought a volumetric concrete lorry! So then
we had a concrete lorry, grabs, tippers and skips,”
says Louisy. “But then when we turned up with the
concrete lorry, people were telling us that the pump
wasn’t there, so we’d have to wait. So we bought a
A pair of 4x2 grabs were soon added to the
fast-expanding and increasingly varied fleet,
allowing Ashville to operate in some of the mews
and narrow streets of Chelsea. And more recently
the company made the move into artic tippers,
with the purchase of a pair of Scania XT R500 6x2
tractors with Kelberg tipping trailers.
But there was still one serious hurdle to overcome,
as Louisy explains: “If we priced a job, and two
The Gaffer
FIRSTLY, MAY I EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO MARK
ROBINS, HIS STAFF, PLAYERS, AND ALL ASSOCIATED
WITH COVENTRY CITY FOOTBALL CLUB.
T
hey arrive here on the back
of a good home victory
against Reading and have
had a very strong start to their
Championship campaign. Mark has
built a squad that possesses
excellent individual quality, a very
evident team spirit and an
undeniable work ethic, and there’s
no doubt that they’ll present a
tough challenge here this
afternoon. We look forward to a
high-quality encounter and to
sharing a post-game drink with
Mark and his staff.
Tuesday night saw us face Oxford
United in the Carabao Cup with a
heavily depleted playing squad.
A combination of sickness and injury
resulted in eight of our players being
unavailable. However, the remaining
squad members stepped up and
delivered a positive performance
that saw us progress into the next
round. It was very pleasing to see
strong 90-minute displays from the
likes of Andre Dozzell and
George Thomas, whilst Charlie
Kelman similarly benefitted from
a full game at first-team level. We
were able to welcome back Sam
McCallum after his recent illness and
he enjoyed a good 60 minutes in
readiness for today’s game against
his former club.
It was also good to see three players
from the B team squad occupy our
bench and then all contribute to the
overall team performance. Stephen
Duke-McKenna, Ody Alfa and Joe
Gubbins were ready when called
upon and made a positive impact
when introduced for the latter
stages of the game.
The third-round draw took place on
Wednesday evening, and we look
forward to the next challenge.
As I write these notes, we have six
days left of the summer transfer
window and there clearly remains
significant business still to be
completed by many clubs. I truly
HOOPS
believe that this is proving to be one
of the most difficult transfer periods
of recent years, simply because of
the financial impact of the pandemic
combined with certain high-level deals
that appear to have ‘unsettled’ the
appropriate player valuations.
When a player at the top level
moves for the sum of £100m, it
immediately changes the price tags of
players at or just below that highest level.
This, in turn, filters down the pyramid
and we see the £10m player now quoted
at £20m, the £5m striker now valued at
£10m and so forth…
This creates huge problems for
various clubs as they struggle to add
much-needed reinforcements to their
squads whilst fighting the devastating
consequences of having had no notable
revenue for the last 18 months.
In our own case, we did a lot of early
business which is hugely beneficial, but
perhaps still seek an additional striking
option. Much work is going on to secure
a suitable option that fits within our own
financial parameters.
Finally, and I make no apologies for
repeating a message from my last set
of notes, I must make mention of the
noise made by our supporters and the
positive impact this has had on each
and every one of our players. Against
Barnsley, the support in the second
half was so strong and the noise that
followed the equalising goal was the
loudest I’ve heard at the stadium. Again,
on Tuesday evening, despite a smaller
number inside the ground, tremendous
backing was afforded the players and
there’s no doubt they responded so
positively. Please do not underestimate
the impact such support can have
throughout the season! As always, it’s
greatly appreciated and never taken
for granted!
Enjoy the game!
It is with broken hearts that we
announce the passing of Paul, a wonderful husband,
father, grandfather, uncle and brother. A great man
who was always smiling, dancing and singing. He will
be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
Paul was a lifelong supporter of QPR. Some would
say QPR was his first love, and he always believed no
matter how bad they got. Maybe you could do it for
him this season?
Loftus Road will not be the same without him. We
will love and miss you always.
JOHN KAVANAGH
With deep sadness we pay
tribute to John Kavanagh, a
wonderful Dad, Grandad, Great-
Grandad, Father-In-Law, brother,
uncle, and friend to so many. Sadly, John passed away
quite suddenly on Thursday 19th August.
John and his late wife Kathleen and their family lived in
W12 for more than 40 years. He was a regular attendee
at Loftus Road with his son Edward, a season-ticket
holder for many years, who is at today’s game.
John was a true gentleman in every sense of the
word and the world is a darker place without him in it.
He was at his happiest when he was surrounded by
his loving family and friends.
He will be forever loved and missed by his children
We lost David Eales to Covid on 26th March 2020.
He was a season-ticket holder for many years until being
HOOPS
Chris - let’s start with the
Barnsley game last weekend. It was
certainly an eventful one. What was
your take on it?
It was a difficult test against a good
team. I thought they dominated the
ball in the first half and deserved to be
winning. In the second half we showed
great character to come back. I had
mixed emotions at the end, but a draw
was probably a fair outcome.
At 2-0 down with 11 minutes,
did you honestly believe we could still
get a result?
In recent matches and towards the end
of last season, our character has grown. I
always believed we could come back so I
wasn’t surprised when we did.
It was tough for the players who were
substituted in the first half. Has that
happened to you before?
I’ve been subbed at half-time in the
past and it’s not a nice feeling. But
these things happen in football. I don’t
think it was anything against George
[Thomas] and Andre [Dozzell], it was
more of a tactical decision. They’re
two good players and they’ll deal with it
and move on.
The match at Middlesbrough when
you scored the winner was one to
remember. How good a victory was that
considering we were down to 10 men?
And how great did it feel celebrating in
front of the travelling fans?
It was terrific. I was buzzing. The team
did really well that evening. It’s been
amazing having the supporters back
and the feeling of celebrating with the
travelling fans at Middlesbrough was
incredible. Fans make football.
You must be pleased with the way this
season has gone for both yourself and
the team? Personally, you’ve’ been
getting a lot of plaudits and praise in
the media…
I just need to carry on working hard and
trying to improve. Hopefully I can keep
helping the team. It’s an upbeat dressing
start. We’ve got a lot of confidence at
the moment. We believe in ourselves,
and we feel we can push on to even
better things.
Were you confident we could have a
good season given the way we finished
last term and our summer recruitment?
Definitely. We’ve got a good mix of
experience and youth. With the way we
finished last season, I’m confident we
can do big things this term.
What were your personal ambitions
at the start of the season? A certain
number of games, goals or assists?
I do have a figure in my head of how many
goals I want to score but I don’t really
want to share it! I’m trying to get more
goals but really just improve my all-round
game and help the team as much as I
can. If that’s by scoring goals or more
assists, then I’ll take it.
Last season was your first at the club.
Were you pleased with how you did?
It took me a bit of time to find my feet
after I joined in October, but I got better
as the season went on. You could see
towards the end that I was used to my
teammates and really started to push on.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
They’re always speaking to us youngsters
to help us with our game. I try to get
advice off them all the time. A lot of
the players do. They’ve got so much
experience and it’s great to be able to
You’re famously one of three footballing
brothers with Joe at Newcastle and
Matty at Salford. How do your family
decide who to go and watch if you’re all
in action?
It’s quite difficult when there’s three of us!
My dad tends to rotate it. He’s used to it
as he’s been doing it for a long time. Last
weekend, he recorded my game as it was
on Sky and drove to Birmingham to watch
Joe play for Newcastle at Aston Villa. My
[Laughs]. Yeah, I don’t think she realised
the cameras were on her!
How much would you love to win
promotion and come up against Joe in
the Premier League?
It’s my dream to play in the Premier
League and hopefully I can do that
with QPR. I’ve never played against my
brothers in a senior game. I played with
Joe for Arsenal’s Under-23s, and we
came up against Matt when he was at
Manchester United. That was a weird
one, but it was an amazing feeling to be
on the same pitch as them both.
You moved to Portugal with Benfica at a
young age. How did you find that?
It was difficult at the start. My mum
came with me for a bit so I wasn’t on
my own. She helped me settle in. I got
a grasp of the language where I could
have a conversation. It was a really good
experience for me, and I learned a lot. I
grew in that time as a player and a person.
We face Coventry today, a side you
scored against last season in QPR’s 3-0
home win. A repeat of that would be
nice, wouldn’t it?
They’re a good team. Like us, they
like to play football so it’s going to be
a hard challenge. I feel like we have
enough quality and ability to beat them.
Hopefully we can get the win for the fans
THE FOUNDING EDITOR OF QPR FANSITE ‘R’ GENERATION
DISCUSSES THE LATEST GOINGS ON IN W12…
R
esilient.
That’s a word that for once in my
19 years of supporting QPR, completely
sums up this year’s QPR squad.
It’s important to be resilient. I myself would
say I’m quite resilient. I sat through the whole
of Doctor Who Season 13, something that
required an insane amount of resilience on top
of a hole in the ground to scream into (it really
isn’t good).
Not only that but QPR fans are naturally
resilient; we’re not a very easy-going side to
say the least. So, it’s really lovely to finally have
a squad who truly embody that inherently QPR
character trait.
Our victory over Middlesbrough and our draw
with Barnsley were both great examples of how
crucial perseverance is in this division. If you’d
forgotten just how mental this league was, we’re
four games in (as of writing) and we’ve already
had about four injuries, had a man sent off and
scored nine goals. What a league.
But, to stay in the right half of the league, you
have to have a certain mentality. Step up Mark
Warburton. Recently on our site - ‘R’ Generation
- we spoke to Rangers centre-back Yoann
Barbet. When asked about what it’s like working
under a man like Mark, Yoann swiftly noted just
how much the players enjoy playing and training
under him; how he’s very technical and very
pragmatic and how his experience working in the
City of London translates into decisiveness on
the pitch.
Despite some really brilliant moments in that
Barnsley game - Chair’s solo strike, Charlie’s
final clincher, Dom Ball’s entire appearance - the
moment that really stood out to me was a little
clip of Mark fist pumping, as if at a Djibril Cisse
DJ set in Ibiza (yes, he’s a DJ now), after the
equaliser went in.
That moment of joy from Mark was completely
deserved. He won that point for us. He had no
shame in changing the game plan so early on in
the first half after it evidently wasn’t working. He
chose those subs and pondered how we were
going to turn the game around. He was the one
with the level head maintaining our resilience
and instructing our determination. That’s not to
take away any credit from the boys who executed
their instructions so well. But, after a somewhat
lacklustre performance in that first half, the
management decisions were really crucial.
Behind every great team is a great manager
and if this side is going to go from good to
great, then the transition will be achieved by Mr
Warburton. Our squad has an excellent blend
of youth and experience and I believe we’ll keep
pushing at the top end of the table this season.
We’re not lying down and dying after setbacks.
In fact, we’re doing the polar opposite! It’s really
exciting to see, and I can’t wait to find out what
the rest of the season holds for us all...
OPPOSITION
OVERVIEW
O P P O S I T I O N O V E R V I E W
Maybe it’s because they’re playing matches back in their
home city rather than down the road in Birmingham, but
whatever it is, Coventry have certainly made a bright start to
the new season.
A mainstay of the top flight for 34 years, the Sky Blues have had a
prolonged period of upheaval in recent times until their summer
return to the renamed Coventry Building Society Arena.
On the field, the appointment of former Manchester United
striker Mark Robins in 2017 for a second stint has also
produced grounds for optimism.
A Football League Trophy victory in 2017 within Robins’ first
month in the job was followed up by League Two play-off glory
soon after. A League One title in 2019/20 then saw City back in
the Championship, eight years after their relegation from the
second tier.
Coventry, FA Cup winners in 1987, finished 16th last season
and have started the new campaign in impressive fashion, with
three wins from their opening four league fixtures.
a second time.
Despite City’s muchpublicised
off-the-field
issues, a Football
success were rapidly
achieved, before Robins
led Coventry to the
Championship as
League One winners in
After a 16th-place finish
last term, the Sky Blues
outside of the city.
Former Manchester
Robins began his
AMERICAN international Roy Wegerle is fondly remembered
Having initially arrived on these shores with Chelsea in
1986, Wegerle joined Rangers for a fee of £1m following a
stint at Luton Town.
The striker made an instant impression in W12 as Rangers
finished third in the top flight. His eventual haul of 29 strikes
in 65 league games included a wonderful solo effort against
Leeds United that was voted ITV’s Goal of the Season in 1990.
Wegerle then joined Blackburn Rovers, before making the
switch to Coventry in 1993 where he helped the Sky Blues
reach the newly formed Premier League. He returned to his
HOOPS
SIMON, you were a skilful striker
in our run to the 1981/82 FA Cup
final. It was 40 years ago now, but it
only seems like yesterday, doesn’t it?
The older you get, the faster time goes
by. And time is really flying by at the
moment. Yes, it’s 40 years. I keep in
touch with one or two people who
were involved in that run to the cup
final and we’re all as sick as you can get
that we can’t still play!
We were drawn at home to
Middlesbrough in the third round.
They were in the top flight and
Rangers were in Division Two. So, we
started our cup run as underdogs,
didn’t we?
Yes. I remember that day. The weather
conditions weren’t great. We went a
goal down, but we really dominated as I
recall. I have no idea who played a ball
through to me, but I wasn’t going to
miss. My goal secured a 1-1 result.
Then there’s a complicated story
coming up! The replay against Boro
was postponed in midweek due to bad
weather and the following Saturday I
scored again when we played
Wrexham. After that game, QPR
chairman Jim Gregory was so pleased
with my form that he told me he’d
reserved four places for dinner at his
favourite Italian restaurant near his
company offices in Roehampton. He
said, ‘Take your wife and a couple of
friends tonight and have a nice dinner!’
We went to the restaurant, and I can
tell you exactly what I had to eat
because I wasn’t very well afterwards. I
had a seafood spaghetti. The next day
was a Sunday and the team were due
to travel up to Middlesbrough for the
replay which had been rescheduled for
the Monday night. At 12 noon I rang R’s
boss Terry Venables to say, ‘Listen, I
can’t come in. I’m dying!’ I lost around
two stone in two days just from
sickness and diarrhoea. I had terrible
food poisoning, so I didn’t travel up
with the team. But on the Monday,
Venners was ringing me saying, ‘Can
you come up? Can you come up?’ I got
a train from Kings Cross to Darlington
where someone picked me up and
drove me to the team hotel. Everyone
had finished lunch there when I walked
in, and I must have looked terrible.
Venners said, ‘Oh, you won’t be able to
play Simon.’ I replied, ‘Just get me
something to eat and then I’ll see how I
feel.’ It was the first thing I’d had to eat
since the Saturday night. At first, I
didn’t believe I could play. But I’m one
of these people that thinks, ‘If I’m
going to play, then we’re going to win.’ I
was always a bit like that. I told
everyone I was okay, and I played.
Rangers won 3-2 with you scoring
the first two goals and Warren Neill
grabbing the winner for us in
extra-time. It was a stunning victory,
wasn’t it?
I grabbed two decent goals and it was a
hard match. The old Ayresome Park
was a tough place to go for an evening
game when it was freezing cold. They
had their crowd right behind them, but
we did it in extra-time. I was right to
pick myself to play!
In the fourth round we were drawn
away to Blackpool who were in
Division Four. We nearly lost that
game, but it finished 0-0. Then the
replay took place at Loftus Road with
Clive Allen scoring four and you
slotting home a penalty as we ran
out 5-1 winners…
The 0-0 draw was a horrible, horrible
match. But if you’re ever going to win
anything in football then you have to
get through games like that. It was
awful. Blackpool had a couple of big
men up front who were difficult to
handle and they played quite direct
football. It was a bumpy pitch and
windy. Everything was against a team
like us who liked to get the ball down
and play. And we got away with murder!
I was back in my own box defending a
set-play when it got played in towards
their centre-forward Dave Bamber
who was a huge lad. I wouldn’t swear to
I can’t remember my goal
against Grimsby. Probably a
world beater like all of them!
this, but I am pretty sure my teammate
Tony Currie stuck his hand up and just
managed to get the ball off Bamber’s
head! We couldn’t have argued if
there’d been a penalty, but we got
away with a draw. Then in the replay, we
battered them. Clive at home, on form.
He was quite bright was Clive, so if he
thought he was up against opponents
who were a bit easier, then he fancied
himself to score three or four to keep
his average up!
In the fifth round, we beat Grimsby
3-1 at Loftus Road and again you
scored. They were several places
below us in the Division Two table
and it was a comprehensive victory,
wasn’t it?
Grimsby were quite a solid team
back then. They had a decent manager
and they played good football. But it
was an excellent performance by us,
although I can’t remember my goal
from that game, to be honest.
Probably a world beater like all of
them! Seriously, though, we were
starting to get a run going in the
cup and we were performing quite
well in the league while playing nice
football. You do start to get a good
feeling when you reach that stage
of the cup. We’d seen off Grimsby
and we were really interested in who
we were going to draw next and
what was going to happen. There
was a little bit of anticipation
building and a bit of hope and
desire. Training brightened up too
as everyone was excited and
everyone wanted to play.
HOOPS
Do you remember listening to the
radio on a Monday lunchtime for the
live FA Cup draws back in those days?
Definitely. After training, we’d all get
together in the café at Greenford
where we used to train. And next out
of the hat for us was Crystal Palace.
Yes, it was Palace at home in the
quarter-final. They were also in
Division Two and it was a huge
needle game as a number of QPR
men like Venables, Terry Fenwick,
Mike Flanagan and Allen had
previously been at Palace. It was a
very tight affair with chances at both
ends. But Allen scored the only goal
with a couple of minutes left to give
us a 1-0 victory…
That game was one of the hardest,
toughest battles I ever played in. There
were players like Jim Cannon and Steve
Wicks up against us. Palace were a
good team at that stage. Wicksy is a
pal of mine and was a really dominant
centre-half, but I used to quite like
playing against him. I could wind him up
a bit and draw him into false positions
to get him one on one. He knocked me
around a bit in that game to be fair to
him. He tried to bully me. Then Clive
scored. It was a good finish and right at
the end of the game. Clive ran the full
length of the pitch to celebrate in front
of the Palace fans who’d been giving
him a lot of stick all afternoon. It’s one
of the best goal celebrations you’ll ever
see! You’d get fined if you did it
nowadays. And when the final whistle
sounded, thousands of Rangers fans
ran on to celebrate. In fact, I came off
that pitch wearing just a pair of
underpants. The supporters had
ripped everything off me! Socks went,
boots went, shirt was off, shorts went!
I’ve never experienced anything quite
like it. And the atmosphere was
buzzing in the dressing room
afterwards. We had a really good set of
lads, and we were all strong characters
who liked a laugh. We would have had a
great night out after that win.
We had the plastic Omniturf pitch at
Loftus Road during the cup run.
Critics used to say that it gave us a
big advantage, but we also enjoyed a
very good away record in that period,
didn’t we?
Our away record was often better than
the home one. That was down to
having very disciplined defenders
organised to perfection by Venners.
He created a way of playing that made
it very difficult for other teams to play
through us.
TWO nicely worked goals cemented an
entertaining display by Queens Park Rangers in
their fourth home league game of the season.
On a cool and damp afternoon which
caused slippery conditions atop the Omniturf
plastic pitch, Rangers opened the scoring after
12 minutes. Teenage man of the match Gary
Waddock latched on to a poor clearance and
stormed through stationery visiting defenders
before crossing for John Gregory to convert
at the far post.
QPR went on to dominate 80 per cent of the play
and racked up a host of good chances in a classy
performance that was witnessed by club legend
Rodney Marsh in the South Africa Road Stand.
But they had to wait until 10 minutes before the
end to seal matters.
It was a truly brilliant goal that was well worth
waiting for. R’s captain Glenn Roeder picked up
possession in his own penalty area and set off on
a pitch-length run full of audacious double
shuffles. He then picked out Clive Allen who
finished with deadly accuracy.
Hoops boss Terry Venables was a delighted
man afterwards. He said: “We were brilliant today.
It was our best performance so far on the new
playing surface.
“We had the right balance in midfield. Tony
Currie, Gary Waddock and John Gregory all had
outstanding games.”
The Sunday Mirror match report read: “Flamehaired
Eire international Gary Waddock gave a
superb performance. Venables had special
words of praise for 19-year-old Waddock whose
non-stop industry and abundant skill gave
Rangers added bite.”
PROGRAMME SNIPPETS: R’s secretary/
programme editor Ron Phillips wrote:
“The new three-point system still
seems to be fulfilling its early promise of
encouraging clubs to use attacking
football and forcing visiting teams to go
for a win (and not ‘shut up shop’ after
scoring an early opening goal!).
“One minor disadvantage of the system,
however, is that it tends to distort the
gap between, say, teams in the middle of
the table and those at the top. When
three points a game is available, it’s quite
easy to open up a formidable looking gulf
which, from a psychological point of view,
may seem almost unbridgeable.
“In these circumstances, it’s fortunate
that this rather misleading situation
doesn’t apply to the Second Division
where all the leaders have been losing
with clockwork regularity.
“Rangers, although having lost their last
two away games, are still only four points
from the promotion zone and there’s no
reason why they cannot move towards
the top of the table in a very short space
of time. Today’s game, however, is a
crucial one - we have to make certain of
collecting those three points!”
HOOPS
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
G
ood afternoon everyone and
welcome to the Kiyan Prince
Foundation Stadium for today’s
game against Coventry City.
Coventry have enjoyed a very good start
to the season, taking nine points from
their opening four games and building
on the strong finish they had last term.
They have a good squad and an excellent
manager and will prove a tough opponent
to overcome this afternoon.
Since my last notes we’ve enjoyed
another good week in terms of results
gained, winning up at Middlesbrough,
earning a point last Saturday against
Barnsley and then progressing to the next
round of the Carabao Cup having beaten
Oxford United.
Looking at those three games, all were
pleasing in many aspects. Going to
Middlesbrough is never easy. Conceding
early on from a penalty put us on the
back foot but I felt our second-half
performance was outstanding. No
sooner had we got back on level terms
when we had a man sent off but that
never stopped the team taking the
game to the opposition and we gained a
fabulous win. I think that match showed
how far we’ve come in terms of a team
and squad over the past eight months or
so and full credit to the management and
the players for this.
We then had another difficult game
here on Saturday against Barnsley who
I have to say were terrific in the first half
and went in two goals up at the break.
Again, in the second period we showed
the fighting spirit, belief and ability that’s
running through the squad at present,
and we were able a get a 2-2 draw which
from where we were at half-time was an
excellent point.
I have to say there was a time in the game
around the hour mark when the Rangers
supporters really got behind the lads on
the pitch which was great to hear. The
fans played a huge part in helping the
team get a positive result.
It’s important to recognise that there
will be times in the season and during
games where we suffer a bit and things
aren’t going as we would want but that
togetherness on and off the pitch can
help overcome difficult situations.
HOOPS
Following the Barnsley game, we
entertained Oxford in the cup and ran out
comfortable winners to progress to the
next round. The match allowed Mark to
give vital minutes to some players who
haven’t featured much since the season
started. I felt all the lads who came in
performed well and showed that we have
a strong squad with competition for
places which is very healthy.
I was also able to watch our Under-23s
here against Hull City last week in a very
entertaining 4-3 win. I always like to see
the young lads at the club playing and
seeing the progress they’re making
individually and collectively. To make the
step up to senior football is a big one and
they have to be pushing to improve and
develop every time they train and play to
show they can make that progression.
We have some talented young players,
and they know if they’re good enough
they’ll get a chance at our club. If you
look at the number of youngsters that
have come through to play games here
in recent years, it shows there’s been real
progression as a club in this area.
It’s also so good to see our fantastic QPR
in the Community Trust team out and
about, delivering sessions across all ages
and continuing to make such a positive
difference and impact to so many people.
The Trust goes from strength to strength,
and everyone involved should be
extremely proud of the role we play in the
local community. After such a hard and
difficult 17 months it’s great to see good
participation numbers at all the sessions
we deliver as we all get back to something
like normality.
As I’ve said in previous notes there’s a
lot of optimism and excitement in and
around the club at the moment, which is
great, but we just have to go from day to
day, game to game, trying to improve as
best we can and see where it takes us.
On the pitch there’s a long season ahead
where many factors have a part to play in
how well you do but everyone is working
hard to move the club forward. Thank
you as always for your wonderful support.
Enjoy the game.
Come on you R’s!
NON-LEAGUE
FOOTBALL
THERE was an occasion where
two top non-League football
fixtures were staged at Loftus
Road on the same day.
This was during the first
season of our Omniturf
plastic pitch in 1981/82
amidst a period of prolonged
arctic weather.
As a result, many matches
around the country were
postponed during December
and January. The backlog
got so bad that two nearby
teams actually booked Loftus
Road to play their games in
a double-header on Sunday
17th January 1982.
Both clubs were rewarded
with crowds well above the
average for their normal
home fixtures. One admission
fee was charged for the
two games and spectators
who wanted to watch both
matches stayed in the
stadium all day.
The details were as follows:
Kick-off: 11am
Barnet 0
Automotive Products
Leamington 0
Alliance Premier League
Attendance: 885
The programme notes
by Barnet boss Barry Fry
summed up the totally
unprecedented occasion:
“Firstly, my heartfelt thanks
to [QPR manager] Terry
Venables for agreeing to let
us play this fixture at Loftus
Road. He co-operated fully
immediately the request
was made and also had the
HOOPS
“I’m indeed grateful to them
also. This morning should be
another great experience for
our players, and also those
of Leamington, to play on
the all-weather Astroturf
pitch. I hope you all enjoy
the game, including any
neutrals present.”
Fry said afterwards: “It was a
magnificent gesture by QPR
in allowing us to use the pitch
free of charge and I’m pleased
with the financial success.”
Kick-off: 3pm
Hendon 5 Taunton Town 1
FA Trophy First Round
Attendance: 844
Hendon manager Ken Payne
said afterwards: “We faced
a real challenge playing on
such a surface for the first
time and we approached it
in a professional manner. I’d
previously watched QPR play
Chelsea in a Second Division
match here on Boxing Day
and decided that my players
needed to be brave and
decisive on the plastic pitch.”
Hendon skipper Gary Hand
added: “It was an enjoyable
experience. You have to be
skilful to master Omniturf. We
had players with the control
and ability to achieve that. I
thought we were tremendous.
“We trained a few days before
this match on another artificial
playing surface at Islington.
We were only five minutes into
our work out when we agreed
that accuracy was essential,
and the ball had to be played
to feet. That was the policy we
adopted against Taunton, and
it worked a treat.”
Meanwhile, Hendon club
official Eric Abrey said: “QPR
only asked for expenses to
cover the cost of playing
at the stadium. So, we
covered all our costs with the
admission receipts and even
had a couple of bob left over
to put in the bank.”
Nowadays of course, numerous
non-League teams play on 3G
and 4G artificial surfaces at
their own grounds. But Loftus
Road made history in 1982 by
staging the first ever senior
non-League matches played
on synthetic grass.
STEPTOE
FOOTBALL journalists who report on matches
nowadays turn up very well prepared with a host
of useful statistics.
But that wasn’t always the case. Back in the
1990s, there was an elderly Midlands-based
newspaper reporter who always seemed to
cover QPR at places like Stoke, Port Vale and
Crewe. He bore a striking resemblance to the
old man in Steptoe and Son and spoke in
the same irritating voice, albeit with a North
Midlands twang.
This guy would bowl into the press room around
half an hour before kick-off and loudly yell, “Is
there anyone here from Queens Park?”
The first time it happened, I made the mistake
of answering him. Big mistake! Steptoe then
bombarded me with a host of ridiculous
questions that showed his total lack of
preparation and knowledge.
“Tell me about your players,” he whined.
“Who is this Ray Wilkins? I haven’t heard of him.
Is he a youngster?”
I replied in dismay: “No, he’s won 84 England
caps in a glittering career.”
So, Steptoe said: “Has he now? I better write
that down then!”
An elderly Midlands-based
newspaper reporter bore a striking
resemblance to the old man in
Steptoe and Son
I vowed never to talk to Steptoe again. In fact,
every time I saw him enter a press room after
that I shouted: “HARR-OOLD” to let the other
London journalists know he was coming.
Steptoe did try to collar me again, though.
“Are you from Queens Park?” he said at another
R’s away game.
“No, I’m not from Glasgow,” I replied.
He left me alone from then onwards.
|| MEMORY LANE||
AS A SPORTS JOURNALIST WITH THE EALING GAZETTE,
MIKE DONOVAN WAS A MAINSTAY OF THE LOFTUS ROAD
PRESS BOX IN THE 1970S AND 1980S. IN EACH MATCHDAY
PROGRAMME, HE LOOKS BACK ON THOSE UNFORGETTABLE
DAYS OF COVERING QUEENS PARK RANGERS…
DID you know Roy of the
Rovers played for Queens
Park Rangers? And,
furthermore, did you know
(spoiler: today’s visiting fans
might want to look away) he
scored a hat-trick on his full
Rangers league debut aged
17 against Coventry?
I showcased the feat of
the real-life Clive Allen -
my fictional Roy Race - in
comic-book style in the
Ealing Gazette.
My newspaper’s back page
was a pastiche of the cover
for the comic named after
Melchester Rovers ace Roy,
with strips of photographs
instead of cartoons of each of
the then-17-year-old’s goals.
It was one Allen clearly
remembered because the
page was in his personal
collection of memorabilia
when I spoke to him while
writing my book, Greatest
Games: Queens Park Rangers.
The prolific striker told me:
“I remember the Roy of the
Rovers page. I’ve got a copy
of it at home in my scrapbook.
It’s a fond memory of a
fantastic day for me.”
Ian Wallace, destined for
Brian Clough’s European
Cup holders Nottingham
Forest, had put the Sky Blues
ahead early on in their visit to
Loftus Road on Saturday 28th
April 1979.
But Allen, who developed a
fox-in-the-box reputation,
drove the equaliser beyond
Coventry stopper Les Sealey
from outside the penalty area
10 minutes later.
And he then put Rangers in
front from close range after
a penetrating Martyn Busby
run on 46.
HOOPS
The emergence of Allen
was a shaft of sunlight in
a dark and gloomy
campaign
The floodgates opened in
front of the near 11,000
present. Don Shanks made
it 3-1 with a header from
a Mickey Walsh cross six
minutes later.
Allen sealed his treble with the
help of the impressive Busby
soon afterwards before Walsh
completed a comprehensive
5-1 scoreline.
“I remember having to claw
the game back,” said Allen.
“The goals are difficult to
recall vividly in detail. I do
remember the first one was
from outside the box. The
pitch was really, really heavy.
“A muddy pitch and Coventry
wore a horrible chocolate
strip. Certain things stick in
your mind. It was a dream
come true. I was told on
the Friday I was starting on
the Saturday.
“In a way the innocence
of youth helped me. I was
very fortunate because I
was born into a footballing
family (dad Les played for and
managed the R’s). I’d been in
and around QPR since I was
five or six. It was like a second
home for me.
“The magnitude of a debut,
although it was special,
wasn’t that great. It wasn’t
something I was going to be
overawed by. It was almost like
it was my destiny. That this
was my time. My chance. I felt
comfortable with it all.
“The manager just said,
‘Go out and play and enjoy
yourself.’ Do what I’d been
doing. Nothing brain storming.
“I’d scored goals through the
youth team and reserve team.
I think he identified talent. I
felt very relaxed. Obviously
nervous, but comfortable.
“I maintained my perspective.
My dad told me to keep my
feet on the ground. It was,
‘Now you’ve scored a hattrick,
you’ve got to do it in the
next game.’ I was never ever
allowed to get carried away
with what I did that day.”
The emergence of Allen
in Rangers’ best result
of a season was a shaft
of sunlight in a dark and
gloomy campaign as Steve
Burtenshaw’s side lost their
top-flight status.
But Allen proved his treble
was no flash in the pan. He
went on to score 30 goals in
his first complete season as
a professional and netted 72
in 136 league games in two
spells at QPR.
Allen averaged close to a goal
every other game in around
400 appearances with 10
clubs, including seven from
London (although he moved
from Arsenal to Crystal
Palace without having played
a competitive match for
the Gunners).
With Tottenham Hotspur, he
scored a club record 49
competitive goals during the
1986/87 season. He was,
simply, a goal machine.
WOMEN
HANWELL TOWN TO
HOST QPR FC WOMEN
QPR FC Women will be playing all first-team
home fixtures at Hanwell Town’s Powerday
Stadium for the 2021/22 season.
Located in Greenford, just off the A40, the
female R’s - who clinched promotion to the
FA Women’s National League Division One
South East last summer - will now be able
to soak up all the benefits of playing their
home games at Hanwell.
R’s boss Steve Quashie said: “I’m ecstatic
that the club has secured a professional
relationship with Hanwell.
“The impressive Powerday Stadium is
in the QPR catchment area, therefore
easily accessible for current, and
future supporters.
“Their pitch is maintained by experienced
groundstaff, who’ve won many accolades
over the years. The excellent surface will
make a positive impact on the players and
set us up for what will be a great year.”
Charlotte Edwards, QPR in the Community
Trust’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Lead, said: “We’ve been having regular
conversations with the representatives at
Hanwell since we knew of the team’s place
in Tier 4. Hanwell are very keen to have QPR
FC Women play at the Powerday Stadium
and have welcomed us with open arms.
“We hope, in turn, to generate lots of
interest around female football locally and
with the club’s younger female teams.”
Nigel Hunt, Hanwell’s CEO, added: “Hanwell
is a community-based club with the largest
youth set-up in the borough of Ealing.
“Having QPR at the Powerday Stadium will
be a great fit for us as we’re trying to raise
the profile of female football within the
local area.
“We see this as a partnership and look
forward to working with the management
team at QPR to create a welcoming and
friendly environment at the club.”
Columnist
I
THE JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER
PENS HIS LATEST COLUMN…
’d had such an exhausting few days
last week as well as a night out on
Friday. Incredibly, I didn’t wake up until
half-time during the Barnsley game.
With Keith Andrews and Neil Redfearn picking
through the wreckage of QPR’s first-half
performance, there seemed little prospect that
we’d find a route back into the match.
Indeed, there’s every chance the players were
feeling as fatigued as I was after trips to Hull
and Middlesbrough within the space of a few
days. But QPR were so dominant in the second
half that, having not seen the first period, it
seemed hard to believe that we’d been as bad as
the analysis had portrayed.
It was great that we turned the game around and
forced the draw - but this, and the opening day
home draw with Millwall, was a timely reminder
to fans that Championship sides will come here
throughout the season and cause problems.
It’s been great seeing Stefan Johansen back in
a Rangers shirt. It was never a fait accompli that
he would make his loan from Fulham permanent
over the summer.
He may or may not remember me collaring him
in one of the hospitality lounges at Fulham on
a Friday night two seasons ago. He won man of
the match that evening as Fulham recovered
from Jordan Hugill’s early opener to beat us 2-1.
I actually told him after that game what a great
club QPR was and that he should maybe consider
joining us that day. At that point, my mate
Joel (pictured left) pulled me back to our table
before the waiter took the prawn sandwiches away.
Finally, I must extend the warmest of
welcomes to my former Sky colleagues John
McLaughlin and Steve Baker, who will be in the
away end this afternoon.
John followed Coventry all the way down to
League Two, via ‘home’ stints at Northampton
and Birmingham and the odd brush with
extinction. No wonder he’s loving being
back. Steve is an Everton fan along for the ride.
Both are smashing lads who made my decade
at Sky all the more enjoyable. In return, I often
brightened many a dreary morning for them with
a sparkling comedy repertoire, solid on-screen
performance, and all-round bonhomie.
So much so, that when I invited the self-styled
‘Hammersmith Hardmen’ for a post-match
debrief at Defector’s Weld, they told me that as
much as they’d have loved to join me, they were
rushing off to a Bluetones gig at The Forum in
Kentish Town.
I still hope to meet them for a pint before the
game - as long as I leave my joke book at home.
