Happy Heritage Day! Today we celebrate our
beautiful, colourful nation and the phenomenal
melting pot of cultures that makes us, us. Whatever
your background, we urge you to take a moment to
recognise how unique and incredibly special it is to call
yourself a South African.
01
Happy Spring Day! What better way to kick off the new season than
by planting some beautiful blooms? This month we’re planting
Bidens ‘Golden Empire’ for its masses of golden daisy-like flowers
that attract butterflies from mid-Spring through to mid-Autumn.
The compact bushy plants (25cm high and wide) are useful as filler
plants for garden beds, containers and hanging baskets. Bidens
‘Golden Empire’ grows in all types of garden soil, in full sun. It is
water wise and tolerant of urban pollution. It shows off best when
massed together. It combines well with other plants when used
in mixed containers and hanging baskets but needs more regular
watering than garden grown plants. The fine, bright green foliage is
also attractive. It tends to be a biennial that is at its best for only two
years. Details: ballstraathof.co.za
Book club
Kindness, and strength, and grief. And good company.
Very few of us don’t know, and love, Charlie Mackesy’s
sketches and reminders of what truly matters in
life. Life seen through the adventures of four best
friends - The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse.
The four are, Charlie says, all a little different. He can
see himself in all of them and suggests we may see
them in ourselves, too. The boy, lonely. The mole
wise, and greedy for cake (aren’t we all). The fox is the
quietest ... silent and wary because he’s been hurt by
life. And the horse ... massive, but the most gentle.
Charlie posts his lovely sketches and heart-warming,
thoughtful sayings on Instagram, but we like to keep
a copy of the book close by, to dip into when we
need to be brave. ‘What do you want to be when you
grow up?’ ‘Kind’, said the boy.’ Penguin, from Exclusive
Journey’s End Vineyards have released the latest
vintages of their new-look Tales Series; a range
of four wines, each with eye-catching modern
designs to show the inspiration behind the labels.
This month we’re opening a bottle of Journey’s
End Pastor’s Blend Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot
Cabernet Franc 2019, which pays homage to
the Pastors from the local village of Sir Lowry’s
Pass who regularly deliver Sunday sermons at
the foot of the Journey’s End vineyard. It is
through these local pastors that Journey’s
End channels resources for their support
and development programmes to uplift
a community traditionally plagued by
low socio-economic conditions. Their
support includes running soup kitchens
and pensioners’ lunches, building a new
school hall, providing music lessons,
funding a crèche and a campaign to
eradicate bullying in the township schools.
The wine, a blend of 44 per cent Cabernet
Sauvignon, 29 per cent Merlot, and 27 per
cent Cabernet Franc, has rich notes of juicy
dark red fruit including plums, cherries and
blackberries with a savoury spice dusting
from the oak and some dried herbs giving
it versatility for a range of food dishes. Since
we’re not waiting to open it, luckily this wine
is made for earlier drinking rather than long
cellaring. On winemaker Mike Dawson’s
recommendation, we’ll enjoy with lamb
shanks, but it’s also excellent with roast
beef or venison. Around R117 from shop.
What are we most looking forward to this
Spring? A meal with family and friends,
preferably but not essentially al fresco.
Sophie Hansen’s In Good Company
is crammed with recipes and ideas for
get togethers and good times. Loads of
fabulous dishes, but our favourite is Chatter
Platters (who’d have guessed?). A great, big
generous platter of good things to graze
on all evening, which Sophie suggests
you do the next time you’re hosting book
club (hello), the girls for Friday night drinks
or the neighbours for a catch up. Think
bruschetta and warm streaky bacon with
blue cheese and figs, arancini and baked
feta and olives. And a peach and rosemary
G&T. She’s our kind of hostess, and this is
our kind of cookbook. Murdoch Books
Dark clouds were looming in the
distance. We watched them gather, and we wondered... When will it come? How long will
it last? In Together, artist Luke Adam Hawker follows a man and his dog through the
uncertainty we’re all living through. With stunning sketches, and words by Marianne
Laidlaw, he touches on how, suddenly, everything stopped, of how normal things
felt strange, and the strange felt normal, of the difficulties of being apart, but how
some of us found time to grow, to find new ways to keep in touch and to live and
appreciate what we have. Kyle Books. Follow Luke on Instagram @lukeadamhawker
There are those who swear by self-help books, and those who scoff. But whichever camp you fall
into, you’ll more than likely feel The Grief Handbook is a really helpful option should you need
it (and we hope you don’t). It was written by South African writer and content strategist Bridget
McNulty after her mum died suddenly, and she found she had no idea how to handle the grief
... and nor could she find help in book form. ‘All the books I could find on grief were either too
dense and philosophical, or too religious. What I wanted was an honest exploration of how
to deal with the worst thing. I wanted short, succinct explanations of what grief is and how
to survive it, some space to be really angry and really sad and channel that in some way,
and some words of hope and inspiration to get me through the darkest days. I wanted
a handbook: literally a hand to lead me through my grief.’ She couldn’t find one. So she
wrote one. Subtitled A guide through the worst days of your life, she shares her thoughts
on the shock and disbelief and gives hints and advice on how to get through it, on the
fog of grief, and the surprising physicality of it, on firsts, and lasts, and what others can do
to help (drop off dinner, look after the children for an hour, sit and don’t talk ... don’t say ‘let
me know if you need something’ and never say ‘at least ... ‘.) There are pages for notes and
scribbles, recipes for rituals, and plenty of kindness. As the blurb says, The Grief Handbook
will take you by the hand and offer empathy and compassion, helping you through what
can feel like the worst days of your life. One day at a time. Available on Takealot - R10 goes to
HPCA (Hospice), and in bookstores. Details: bridgetmcnulty.com or Instagram @msbridgetmcnulty
A businesswoman and mother of four,
31-year-old Rachel is a very busy lady.
Yet, through her transition from being
a small-town Eastern Cape farm girl to
living life in the spotlight as Siya’s wife,
she manages the ebb and flow of her
life with honesty, humility and a little
bit of humour!
On your background and
childhood ...
“I grew up in the small town of
Grahamstown and always dreamed
of being a farmer or a farmer’s wife.
I loved horses and the outdoors
and was definitely rebellious in my
teenage years, giving my parents
lots of headaches! I was never an
academic and actually struggled a lot
at school, but I loved and excelled in
sport. One of five kids, there weren’t
resources available to us to go to
university after school so I worked any
and all jobs, just to pay the bills. The
experience honestly taught me so
much about life and people though,
from handing out flyers from 5am
to 7am to working as a waitress at
two different restaurants and doing
promotions, babysitting and house
sitting. I now know what it feels like
to be ignored when you’re standing
at a robot and shouted at when food
is cold. It was extremely character
building. Throughout my life I have
met highly successful people who
didn’t go to university. I thought if
they could do it, then so could I. When
I started working as a receptionist in
a network marketing company and
was promoted to office manager (the
youngest in the company), I felt my
career was ready to take off. Siya and I
fell pregnant with Nic though and my
career took a bit of a back seat.”
On how motherhood has
changed your life …
“We definitely weren’t expecting to
fall pregnant! I was told I couldn’t have
kids, so Nic is a miracle baby if ever
there was one. It was a challenging
time and a hard adjustment having
my freedom and independence taken
away almost overnight. Everything
happened very fast. Siya’s brother
Liyemo (who was 12) and sister
Liphelo (who was 6) came to live
with us when Nic was just three
months old. Nic was premature and spent a month in ICU and then I fell quite
ill afterwards. The whole experience was overwhelming because everything
was so accelerated. When Siya went away on his first tour for a month and I had
the three kids alone I realised I couldn’t do it all and decided to give up my job.
I didn’t have postpartum depression, but I felt very frustrated and almost went
into ‘robot mode’. I remember saying to the doctor, okay, just tell me what I need
to do to keep this baby alive!? The kids are now aged 18, 12, 6 and 4 years old.”
On your marriage and relationship with Siya …
“To be honest, it took us a while to find our rhythm and get to where we are now.
We had a lot of change in our relationship really fast and we struggled to find
what worked for us. Things have improved a lot over the past few years though,
especially now through Covid. We’ve discovered a new lease on life and are so
grateful for the time that we have together. We are working hard at being as
intentional as possible when we are together and are learning to relax and enjoy
life and laugh more. I think we have realised we don’t always have to be serious
– although those serious conversations are necessary sometimes (and thank the
Lord for therapy!). Siya mentioned the other day that he would like to live on a
farm one day … so my farm life dream still might come true, haha!”
On your health and fitness journey …
“I’ve always loved being fit and healthy, but it really has been an up-and-down,
ever-fluctuating part of my life ... and I used to feel very self-conscious about that.
You know, you post a photograph of yourself with abs and then a few months
later you don’t look like that anymore and then you feel shameful about that. I
have realised, though, that if I feel this way, there are other women who feel this
way too. Although I had a bad experience with a business partner who didn’t
share my vision in my previous business, I have some amazing plans and ideas
in place for this space. I want to address the realness of what we face as women
and facilitate open, honest conversations around it. I’m especially passionate
about helping young girls who are growing up with so much pressure and with
social media so much a part of their lives.”
On the Kolisi Foundation …
“This is probably the thing I love talking about the most. Siya and I started the
Kolisi Foundation in April last year during the first Covid lockdown and it has
been a phenomenal journey. We now have a wonderful team and, even if we
aren’t able to be there and hands-on, there is still incredible work going on
all the time. It’s not an ‘immediate relief’ foundation (although that is how we
started, sourcing food and PPE last year and we also helped out with food relief
during the recent riots), but it is about working on big, sustainable projects
that can make a difference for years to come. Our focus is on partnering with
organisations that are already on the ground working in the areas of food
security, gender-based violence, education and sports development.”
On moving and starting a new life on the North Coast …
“I’m not big on change, so I actually struggled with this a lot in the beginning.
The kids and I are moving here in December, but I have been able to come
down a few times already to set up our home. I can honestly say I have never
felt more welcome anywhere in my life. I have been completely overwhelmed
by how friendly and kind people are here. And it’s not just because it’s us, it’s
because they are just good people. It’s refreshing to be surrounded by such
open, kind people and it has made me so excited to live here. We have some
friends here from the Springboks, like Kuziva and Tendai Mtwarira and JP and
Megan Pietersen, and we’ve made other friends already too. The kids are also
very excited. We are slowly familiarising ourselves with the area and I have
already discovered some amazing, local businesses that I can’t wait to support
and connect with. Also, how wonderful is this winter weather!? ”
Going for gold
From his days at Capital 604 to East Coast Radio and then onto his time on Magic 828,
Dave Guselli has always turned listeners into friends. This month, as he keeps music lovers
company - playing classic hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s on East Coast Gold - the muchloved
legend in the South African radio landscape celebrates a 40-year career in radio.
“Radio is all about connection, and that’s what people seem to have forgotten.
My motto is ‘it’s just radio and nobody died’. You’ve got to put the fun back into it.”
Reflecting on his first day at independent radio station, Capital Radio 604, which
was run out of a rambling old double story house in Port St Johns, Dave laughs. It
was 1981 and he was a blue-eyed lad fresh out of Manchester, where he worked
at Piccadilly Radio. “What a disaster! I was so psyched and mentally prepared for
my first day on the graveyard shift - 1am to 5am – and then my wife got food
poisoning the night before. She was so sick that we had to get a doctor out and
he was rather drunk, which didn’t help. The only other option was making an
almost two-hour trek on the dirt road, in the pouring rain, to the nearest hospital
in Mthatha. Fortunately, former programme head of the radio station Stuart Lee
took care of that first show for me so I could take care of Cindy.”
Durbanites might remember Dave better for the 22 years he spent with East
Coast Radio (then Radio Port Natal), seven of them being in the afternoon drive
time slot. He has always had considerable crossover appeal and, over the years,
built a loyal following.
“The short and sweet of 40 years of radio is this: getting onto radio is easy, staying
on is hard. You have to be creative and move with the times. I started with vinyl
and today the songs I play are all in an IT cloud. Dealing with big changes has
not been easy, but I have a hunger and a passion for what I do. My show is very
light-hearted and steeped in nostalgia … there’s very little of me, and a whole lot
of good music.”
A big fan of music from the 70s and rhythm and blues, Dave says he could listen
for hours to the likes of Luther Vandross, The Real Thing, or Earth, Wind and Fire.
My favourite song of all time is Let’s Stay Together by American singer Al Green
and I’m not going to tell you why. Everyone knows I’m a storyteller, but there are
some things I’ll take with me to my grave.”
Speaking of stories, some of Dave’s greatest radio experiences make for
really good ones. Being a warm-hearted, caring individual who loves to give
back to the community, some of his biggest inspirations have been Stage 4
cancer fighter and friend Byron McDonald and a young girl he helped raise R300
000 for so she could be flown to the States to remove a malignant brain tumour.
The operation was a success and they are still in contact today.
“I’m privileged to have met Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Elton John, Chris de
Burgh, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder, with highlights being Celine Dion and
Nelson Mandela – if ever there was a day my knees were weak and I was filled
with humility!”
When the work day is done, Dave enjoys unwinding with a glass of decent red
wine. “I’m a dog lover, a Manchester United fan and a man of healthy eating
habits. I love a good cup of coffee to start the day, drink lots of water, moisturise
with an SPF and thrive on long beach walks.”
With Heritage Day around the corner, Dave admits he’s by no means a ‘Jan Braai’.
: “But it isn’t all about that anyway, it’s about celebrating who we are as a nation.
It’s hard for me not being a true South African, but I look back to where I come
from and where I am today, and I think I’ve earned the right to feel like I belong.”
Catch Dave on East Coast Gold every
weekday from 5 to 9pm and Saturdays
from 2 to 6pm.
meet our Miss SA finalist
When the top 10
finalists walk out onto
stage on the crowning
evening of the Miss
South Africa 2021
pageant next month,
only one of them will
be representing the KZN
province. Meet Lalela
Mswane, a model and
dancer with a Bachelor
of Law qualification.
Text: Leah Shone
Like so many young women, Lalela has dreamed of being in the Miss South Africa pageant since she was a little girl. Now
the beautiful 24-year-old from Kwasokhulu in Richard’s Bay is about to have her childhood dream come true, when she joins
the nine other finalists on stage in Cape Town on 16 October.
The youngest of three siblings, Lalela studied law at the University of Pretoria and says her biggest passion is to find
meaningful, long-lasting solutions to the issue of unemployment in our country.
12 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga September 2021

Describing herself as tenacious, compassionate and with
strong leadership skills, Lalela believes her open heart
and willingness to learn and grow make her worthy of the
coveted Miss SA title.
“The shortage of employment opportunities in our
country is disheartening, particularly in a nation so full
of talented and educated people. Our nation lacks the
infrastructure to nurture talent and provide platforms
conducive to the creation of employment. Consequently,
so many South Africans with the best ideas and talent
resort to emmigrating. This is something I would like to
change.”
That said, Lalela is also extremely proud of her country,
and particularly its people. “Our country is extremely rich
in diversity, heritage, culture and history. My favourite
thing about South Africa is our people and their steadfast
spirit in the face of any adversity. We also never fail to
make humour the centre of any situation, good or bad. I
love that!”
Lalela started her own foundation in June last year
with the purpose of providing support to young South
Africans from underprivileged backgrounds who
are struggling to reach their potential. Through the
foundation she hopes to raise funds for orphanages
and create mentor programmes aimed at equipping
beneficiaries with the tools needed (such as interview
coaching and training) to succeed in their chosen careers.
“If I was given the opportunity to be Miss SA, I would use
the platform to expand the influence of the foundation
and focus on merging school syllabi and skill – effectively
providing kids with skills that help them transition from
school into life outside of school.”
Being a role model to other young women in South Africa
is something Lalela takes very seriously. “My message
to young girls in SA is twofold: firstly, there is strength
in unity and so much greatness can be achieved when
we unite as women in support of each other. Another
female’s success should inspire you and, secondly, women
possess everything within them to achieve anything. Our
greatness is innate. We need to stop playing small and
shrinking ourselves to fit in.”
While she has loved the pageant experience, Lalela says
the journey thus far has also taught her a lot about herself,
including the fact that she is braver than she thought
she was, especially for having the courage to pursue
this dream and open herself up to public scrutiny. “I’ve
also learnt that I’m capable of achieving anything I set
my mind and heart to – and that I handle high-pressure
situations quite well!”
Now that she is headed to the final, we asked Lalela
what she is looking forward to the most. “The moment
I can’t wait for, is stepping onto that Miss South Africa
stage for the first time on the live, final night and saying,
‘good evening South Africa, I am Lalela Mswane from
KwaSokhulu, KwaZulu-Natal’. This will be mind blowing
because the seven-year-old me will be affirmed for
dreaming so boldly.”
health FOCUS ...
Salome
with 3SIXTY BIOMEDICINE
Understanding PCOS with Salome
An estimated 8 to 13 per cent of women suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
(PCOS), a hormonal disorder that involves reproductive and metabolic problems.
The long-term effects of this condition can lead to infertility due to ovarian
dysfunction, but sufferers can also develop diabetes, cardiac problems linked to
hypertension and high cholesterol, as well as sleeping problems.
Common symptoms and diagnosis
Symptoms include irregular or prolonged menstrual cycles and elevated levels
of the male hormone androgen, which results in excess body hair and acne, and
polycystic ovaries where the ovaries are not able to function properly.
Getting a diagnosis by a health practitioner is key to effectively managing
PCOS. The onset of PCOS can start from as young as 14 or 15 years old and if left
undiagnosed and untreated for years – will cause further health complications
down the line, including possible infertility. Parents are encouraged to talk to
their daughters about what is considered ‘normal’ and ‘abnormal’ periods. Just by
having these conversations, we can normalise these common women’s health
conditions and debunk myths and the unfortunate stigma attached to it.
What is Salome ...
and how can it help with PCOS?
The Salome range was developed
by local pharmaceutical company,
3Sixty Biomedicine, and is based
on consumer insights that South
Africans are wanting more natural
alternatives to treat common female
health conditions. Salome Polycos
assists with the management of
symptoms commonly associated
with PCOS by helping to decrease
testosterone levels as well as blood
pressure levels. It also plays a role in
increasing insulin activity in women
diagnosed with PCOS, as many suffer
from insulin resistance. Due to these
hormonal imbalances women living
with PCOS often battle with acne,
irregular periods, male pattern hair
loss or experience excessive body hair
growth (hirsutism). Salome Polycos’s
main active ingredient is D-chiroinositol
(DCI) which is a natural extract
obtained from the carob tree. In cases
where infertility can be linked back
to the hormonal imbalances caused
by PCOS, patients who make use of
products like Salome Fertility that
contain Myo-inositol and D-Chiroinositol
have seen an increase in
their ovulation, a reduction in their
hyperandrogenism and in the
oxidative stress in their follicular fluid.
The efficacy of the product lies in it
containing the correct ratio of Myoinositol
and D-Chiro-inositol that
have been extracted from the pod of
the Carob bean tree. Clinical studies
have shown that these natural
extracts are instrumental in helping
manage the regulation of ovarian
function in PCOS patients.
Who can use this?
Due to the herbal extracts and use of
natural ingredients in the products,
the Salome range has minimal side
effects and they are recognised and
can be reimbursed by certain medical
aids. The products are available online
at www.3Sixtybiomedicine.co.za or on
Takealot.com, and can be purchased
over the counter at leading
pharmacies nationwide.
We believe #YourJourneyMatters so follow the Salome range on their social media pages to hear from Salome experts who are committed to
educating and normalising conversations about common women’s health conditions. Enter the Get It online competition this month to stand a
chance to win an exclusive custom designed Lou Harvey cosmetic bag and discounted voucher to purchase Salome products.
BEAUTY REVIEW
Hayahay Beauty Spa
There is something instantly relaxing about driving down towards Umdloti and turning
into the heavenly, tree-lined Bellamont Road. Coming from either Ballito or Umhlanga,
it feels like a little escape from the busyness of life. Similarly, as you walk down the
long wooden deck towards the entrance of Hayahay Beauty Spa, you know you have
arrived somewhere peaceful and very special.
Owned by Cecilia Davies, who is
originally from the Philippines,
Hayahay Beauty Spa first opened its
doors in November 2019. Cecilia fell
in love with South Africa and KZN
after spending many years here with
her late husband. A gentle soul by
nature, Cecilia loves to see people
happy, which is why she was inspired
to create this luxurious haven of
tranquillity and spoils. Tucked away
in its forest-like setting, that is exactly
what Hayahay is.
During my visit, I was invited to
experience three different treatments:
an express facial, a back and neck
massage and a gel nail overlay. Each
treatment was done by one of the
three experienced and qualified
therapists who work for Cecilia (all of
whom are clearly passionate about
what they do).
My first treatment was an express
Dermalogica facial done by the lovely
Zama. After taking some time to
carefully examine my skin, Zama gave
me a wonderful, luxurious treatment
that left my skin feeling instantly
glowing and packed with moisture.
After the facial I was treated to a
heavenly 30-minute back and neck
massage by the lovely Cindy before
being whisked off to the manicure
and pedicure station for a gel overlay
done by the ‘queen of nails’ Thembi.
Hayahay (which is the Filipino word
for comfort, relax, breezy and refresh)
has a wide range of treatments on
offer, including a variety of facials,
manicures and pedicures, as well as
gel, acrylic and polygel nails. They
also have a selection of massages to
choose from, including hot stone,
full body, back and neck, Indian
head, Thai, body exfoliation, foot
massages, sports massages and even couples’ massages on request and offer
waxing, eyelash extensions and tinting. They also stock a wide range of products,
including brands like Dermalogica, Heliocare and Be Bright collagen.
The ideal place to recharge and reconnect (either with yourself or with your
friend or partner), Hayahay is a wonderful, secluded gem and definitely worth a
visit!
THE TABLE
When Love Laugh owner Cindy offered to
create a Heritage Day-inspired table for us,
we knew we were in good hands. Passionate
about people and creating beautiful
bespoke events and weddings, Cindy and
her team bring all their creative flair to every
event they are involved in. From the Bully
Beef and Lucky Star tins filled with proteas,
to the shwe-shwe print napkins, classic tin
bowls and elegant animal-print-inspired
wine glasses … she didn’t disappoint!
Cindy’s top 5 tablescaping tips:
1. Try include stunning napkins. Printed,
natural linens, or textured, this always
elevates the look of any table when styling.
2. Stunning, elegant, clear, coloured or
embossed glassware is always good to have.
Green is my go-to favourite at the moment.
3. Accessorize with flowers and candles.
Different colours and shapes of candles
are great grouped together to create
focal points. Add a few stems of gorgeous
flowers, aloes, bunny tails etc.
4. Remember this basic rule of tablescaping:
layer with textures and colour.
5. Try to have a theme or colour palette or
find some type of inspiration to work from
– this always helps create a gorgeous end
result. Details: Love Laugh, Lifestyle Centre
THE WINE
Let’s be honest, a good bottle of wine
is a verrrry important element of a
braai! We were thrilled to have received
Wineology. Owners Vanessa and Peter
are passionate about celebrating
unique wines and proud to be the only
range from Franschoek. Black Elephant
Vintners believe that wine should not
be about conformity or snobbery,
but fun and experimental - and we
couldn’t agree more. We got to taste
the wines from their Festival range,
all of which were honestly great. The
names just are our favourite! The red
blend is called ‘Three Men in Tub with
a Rubber Duck’, the rose ‘Rose Rebel’
and the Sauvignon Blanc ‘Two Dogs, a
Peacock & a Horse’. We also tried their
wine-in-a-can selection and we are
officially sold! Hello new perfect picnic
THE MEAT
By far the star of the show at any braai has to be the
meat. We were given a selection of fantastic spoils
from hands-down our favourite butchery in town,
Wozza Meat Co. Having grown up on a farm, owner
Warwick Taylor absolutely loves being a hands-on
butcher. He thrives on serving excellent quality meat
and poultry to his customers and has a fantastic team
to back him up. He has two butcheries – one at the
Ballito Junction Regional Mall and one at The Market at
Lifestyle Centre Ballito – and also has an online store.
For our braai, Warwick rustled up a great selection of
nyama, including grass fed sirloin steaks, pork rashers
smothered in a honey glaze and pineapple glaze, skinny
lamb chops and the most amazing and tender free
range boneless chicken thigh kebabs marinated in their
Wozza original sauce! Absolutely delicious. Details: www.
THE VENUE
Bordering a thick, coastal forest with fish
eagles flying overhead and a sparkling
blue pool just off the deck, the exquisite
show house at The Reserve in the Zululami
Luxury Coastal Estate was the perfect spot
to host our small gathering. The Reserve
is the latest private residential complex
within the estate and, using world-class
technology, allows homeowners the
freedom to customise the design of
their home online. The 3 and 4-bedroom
homes have views of the ocean, wetlands
and surrounding coastal forests. Details:
variety of delicious side dishes? Olive
catering company run by the
wonderful owner, Ros Ivey. A talented
chef and lover of all-things-delicious,
Ros and her team have catered for all
types of events around the province
and country ... from understated rustic
They do all sorts of events, weddings,
corporate lunches and intimate athome
celebrations and also have a
range of frozen meals, awesome kraft
food boxes and homemade relishes!
“Everyone loves a braai,” says Ros. “So
often on the weekend we can ‘smell
a braai’ in the air and, well, any excuse
for a South African to light a fire! Our
take on the menu was to include
some SA favourites … but with our
twist to each dish!”
Ros served up these yummy dishes:
Corn, Chive & Smoked Paprika Bread
with Jalapeño Butter; Charred Kidney
Bean, Tomato and Coriander salad
with homemade Chive and Lemon
vinaigrette; Parmesan Crust and Herb
Potato Bake with a twist and Tomato
Salsa (on everything) and Salsa Verde
(for the meat).
Corn, Chive & Smoked
Paprika Bread with
Jalapeno Butter
What you need:
1 cup corn meal, 1 cup flour, 1/4 cup
sugar, 4 teaspons of baking powder,
1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon
smoked paprika, 1 teaspoon snipped
chives, 1 cup milk, 1egg, 1/4 cup oil
To make:
Stir together the flour, corn meal,
sugar, baking powder and salt until
evenly combined. Whisk together
milk, egg, and oil. Pour the wet
ingredients into dry ingredients and
mix until just combined. Bake for 20
minutes in an oven proof loaf pan (or
even better, bake in a cast iron loaf
pan in hot coals during your braai!).
Serve with jalapeno butter
To make butter: Blend 1 cup butter
with 3 chopped jalapenos until well
combined and freeze or refridgerate
until serving.
Chicken burger …
with a local twist
We live in such a beautifully rich, multicultural country and province. Why not
celebrate our heritage (and Spring!) by whipping up these delicious North
Coast-inspired tikka chicken burgers? Simbithi’s Fig Tree sous chef Kiosha
Ramdut created this recipe ... and then so kindly shared it with us!
Photographs: Chris Allan Photo
Chicken Tikka Burger
You’ll need (per burger): 1 burger bun, 2 leaves butter lettuce,
1 slice tomato, 2 onion rings, ½ tablespoon mayo, 250g chicken
fillet, 80g tikka sauce, 50g prego sauce, 5g Cajun spice, 5g paprika,
½ tablespoon Dijon mustard, 2g coarse pepper, 1 clove garlic, 3
tablespoons canola oil, ½ tablespoon chicken stock granules
To make: The star of the burger is undoubtedly the authentic
tikka sauce/marinade, which is unique to the Fig Tree kitchen
(don’t worry, they’re letting us in on the secret!). Put the prego
sauce, Cajun spice, paprika, Dijon mustard, pepper, garlic, chicken
stock granules and Canola oil into a food processor and blitz. Cut
the chicken fillet into strips - not too thin – and drop them into
the sauce (they let theirs marinate for 24 hours, which is why the
chicken is so soft and juicy!). In a skillet over medium heat, heat
oil and add the marinated chicken strips. Flip them until they are
golden. They cook quite quickly and remain soft because of the
marinating. To assemble your burger: Spread the mayo on the
bottom half of the burger bun. Then, layer your lettuce, onion,
tomato and chicken strips. Pour the sauce left in the skillet over the
burger. Now you can get creative and add any other toppings you
like: avocado, cheese, onion rings and even coleslaw. There is a lot
of flavour on this burger already though, so it’s recommended you
enjoy as is! Details: www.simbithi.com/the-country-club, 032 946 5403,
enquiries@simbithi.com
Chef Kiosha’s Tips:
If you aren’t keen to have a
burger, you may enjoy your saucy
chicken strips in a wrap, pita or
over a few fresh greens as a salad.
Alternatively, serve over a giant
mushroom for a banting option.
If you want the best flavour out
of your chicken, you must let the
meat marinate for 24 hours!
For those brave souls who like it
extra spicy, drop some red-hot
chillies into your marinade!
Living the farm dream
There is no denying that macadamia nut farming is a lucrative, growing business
in South Africa - and particularly here on the KZN North Coast. We spoke to a local
macadamia farmer about this exciting crop.
Text: Leah Shone Photographs: Chris Allan Photo
Almost every South African has, at
some point, fantasized about what it
would be like to live on a farm. Wide
open spaces, beautiful countryside
and the pleasure and reward of
growing a crop and reaping the
benefits of what you have sown.
While this may seem like just a pipe
dream to most, there are many North
Coasters who are turning this dream
into a reality. Their crop of choice?
Macadamia nut trees.
Macadamia nuts are a profitable,
high value crop … and our nuts are
in high demand. In fact, South Africa
is currently the largest macadamia
nut producer in the world. And our
beautiful, tropical North Coast climate
makes this the ideal spot to grow
these delicious, multi-purpose nuts!
Fairview Estates, just outside Ballito, is
a 480-hectare estate that encourages
people to go back to traditional farmstyle
living – within a secure estate.
When you buy a piece of land in the
34 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga September 2021
estate you are also afforded the chance to become a member of the macadamia
co-op, allowing you to enjoy a taste of small-to-medium-scale commercial
farming by planting and harvesting macadamia nuts on your small-holding.
Fairview Estates Macadamia Co-op CEO and farmer Scott Meyer lives on the
estate and heads up the macadamia co-op. He is passionate about this exciting
venture, particularly because, he says, the crops are being grown in a truly
sustainable way, which is somewhat different from the traditional, commercial
farming environment.
“It’s really exciting to be regenerating this land and reintroducing a wide range of
biodiversities,” he says. “As this was an old sugar cane farm, we are moving away
from that monoculture and redeveloping grasslands and allowing wild flowers to
grow. This means there are loads of birds, butterflies and insects and the land is
full of life once more.”
Scott says macadamia nut farming allows you to use regenerative farming
processes that incorporate different biodiversities, allowing nature to do its thing
within its ecosystems with no chemical interceptions.
“Macadamia trees only produce nuts six to 10 years after planting, so this is a
long-term investment. But this also means you don’t need to spray pesticides
(which often kill both the good and bad bugs) to protect the nuts. It’s wonderful
to see the soil full of earthworms and butterflies and bees coming back to this
land.”
There are a number of benefits to being a member of the farming co-op,
especially because you don’t have to invest in farming equipment, vehicles and
staff yourself. You also don’t have to know too much about farming!
Fairview owner Dudley Wang says, like many South Africans, he has always

dreamt of living on a farm or small holding. Two years ago he and his family
decided to diversify their portfolio and invested in 40 hectares of land in Fairview
Estates. “We planted our first trees in October last year and it’s been the most
wonderful experience. I know very little about mac nut farming, so it’s been great
to have a genuine, experienced farmer looking after our crops.”
Dudley says he was very ‘macadamia-naive’ when they first bought the land and
has even done a short course to upskill himself. “I also talk to the trees and they
listen to me,” he laughs. Dudley, who is retired, has made it his mission to ensure
that he checks on every one of his trees each month. His long walks on the farm
have improved his health, he says, and his children and grandchildren all love
spending time there. “It’s a wonderful ‘last career’ for me and in 10 years’ time the
farm should be generating enough to cover at least five to eight of the children’s
educations per annum.”
5 macadamia nut
farming facts:
1. South Africa is currently the
largest macadamia nut producer in
the world and, according to Scott,
it’s still in its infancy.
2. Macadamia nut farming is a longterm
investment. Once you plant
your trees you can expect your first
nuts in about 6 to 10 years.
3. The KZN coastal belt is one of the
best places in the world to grow
macadamia nuts.
4. Macadamia nuts only make up
about 2% of the world nut tree
production.
5. Macadamia nuts are a wonderful
crop because they are used in a lot
of secondary value-add products,
many of which are made by small,
local producers. It is also a very
stable and safe crop with a long
shelf life.
Lighting provides interesting focus
areas A room should have various
focus points that draw the eye and
create areas of interest. When a home has different shades of
neutral, these focus points become more important. Look for
texture, height, and shades of the same colour.
3 tips for selecting the right lighting
Look at heights Lighting at various heights creates interesting focal
points. But when you have an open plan design, connecting twoto-three
rooms, you should try to keep the lighting from the roof
the same height.
Select the right colours: Create a core colour palette
for your home. This will help you to develop rooms that
complement each other ... you can then select lights that fall
within your chosen colour palette.
Keep it interesting, yet consistent While shapes, colours
and contours can add interesting features to your lighting, it’s
important to keep some consistency in either style, trend or
colour.
Choose the right bulbs Make sure your lighting is soft and the
right colour for your room. Do you like a white light, or do you
want to create a mood with warmer yellow lights? You can also
get interesting bulbs that become a feature element to your light
... large and oversized bulbs with interesting wiring which bring an
element of design into your home.
Kidney disease in children
As a specialist in the treatment of urinary tract and kidney diseases in
babies, children and adolescents, paediatric nephrologist Dr Rashinta
Moodley sheds some light on kidney disease in children.
“Due to developmental problems during pregnancy, many babies can be born
with kidney and urinary tract abnormalities. Nephrotic syndrome is common in
children- this is a condition where large quantities of protein are lost in the urine.
There can also be obstructions in the urinary tract. Infections can also affect the
kidney resulting usually in temporary loss of function. Any progression of these
conditions can lead to chronic kidney failure.”
Dr Moodley says the warning signs are decreased amount of urine passed,
swelling of the face and body, recurring urinary tract infections, blood in the
urine, and incontinence.
“Treatments depend on the cause of the kidney disease, example, Nephrotic
syndrome is treated with intravenous protein replacement and steroids, but
often stronger immunosuppressants are needed. Obstructive/developmental
abnormalities of the urinary system may require surgical intervention. Kidney
disease can progress to kidney failure, at which point dialysis and transplantation
will be necessary. Depending on the child’s condition and response to treatment
or surgery, the prognosis can be very good. However, once the patient has
renal failure, the prognosis depends on the success of dialysis and kidney
transplantation.”
Dr Moodley says she strives to treat a child with the fewest number of drugs
and manage their kidney condition for as long as possible before resorting to
dialysis. “It is rewarding to see a child in remission, with minimal side effects, and
it is especially satisfying to find a live, related donor and achieve a successful
transplant. Parents are often willing to donate a kidney to their child (an adult’s
kidney can be transplanted into an infant as long as the clinical and donor
matching criteria are met) but if the parent or other family members are not
suitable donors, the child may have a long wait before a cadaver organ is
available.”Dr Moodley has been in private practice since 2015 and is currently
consulting at Life Entabeni Hospital, Life Mt Edgecombe Hospital and The
Gateway Private Hospital. She can also admit patients to Netcare Umhlanga
Hospital and Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital.
Adrift
on a houseboat
One of the most effective ways of relieving stress is to be close to water.
Could be a hotel at the seaside, perhaps a country cottage overlooking a waterfall,
our choice? A luxurious houseboat on Lake Jozini.
While many choose luxury lodges
close to rivers and waterholes or along
our beautiful coastlines, we loved the
idea of exploring the legendary Lake
Jozini, one of South Africa’s oldest
wildlife havens.
Apart from being a mecca for feisty
fishermen - it’s the only tiger fishing
destination in SA - it is perfect for
game enthusiasts and bird watchers to
enjoy a special water safari that offers
viewing a host of cool water creatures
- from antelope to rhinos, crocodiles to
hippos, even ellies – from a whole new
vantage point.
A trip on one of the intimate 12 or
20-sleeper Shayamanzi Houseboats is
all ultra-comfy en-suite, oak-panelled
cabins, is incredible views and
sensational sunrises and sundowners
on the deck.
It’s about listening for the distinctive
cry of the fish eagle or the grunt of a
lazy hippo while you relax in the large
jacuzzi on the sundeck at the stern of
the boat. About watching the sun set
over the Jozini Lake with the Lebombo
Mountains behind you. About
gathering at the bar for an exotic
cocktail at dusk, when the frogs and
cicadas add their voices to the night
time chorus.
It’s a break from the city, where you can
get together with friends and swap
fishing stories (it was this big *stretches
arms wide*). A photographer’s dream
... it’s just one wonderful opportunity
after another to capture landscape
photographs – sunrises and sunsets,
of game that have strolled down for
a drink, of the incredible reflections in
the water. A good wide angle lens is a
good idea here so capture every inch
of the spectacle.
Who’s it good for? Romantic escapes,
it goes without saying, but also
retirement getaway ... older travellers
will find this an excellent option. Since
it’s small - Shayamanzi caters for a max
of 20 guests - it’s also a fab option
of private events ... pre-wedding
parties, birthday milestones and
smaller celebrations. Massive bonus ...
you won’t have to arrange anything
yourself, the team does it all for you,
from menu planning to activities and
games ... all you and your guests need
to do is sit back and enjoy the ride,
ensuring that the only headache that
you might have is on the morning after
the big celebration.
Talking menu planning, the meals
on-board are delicious, with loads
of options, and those with special
dietary requirements well catered
for. Generous, too... three meals a day,
endless teas and coffees, and late
afternoon snacks for those who’ve
worked up an appetite and can’t wait
for dinner!
Game watching from the main boat or
one of the smaller tender boats, sitting
and doing absolutely nothing (count
us in), sleep in or get up at the crack
of dawn to take in the sunrise ... it’s up
to you. 16 thousand hectares of open
water. 400 species of fish in the lake.
Exceptional wildlife. Heaven.
