PUPPETRYMASTERCLASSES

KATHRYN MULLEN

(USA, BERMUDA) MONDAY •JUNE 7

Kathy will talk about her experiences creating

informational and educational puppet videos for

children around the world. She will discuss why

puppets are a good choice for getting across

important messages to kids in dire and scary situations

and how the non-profit puppet production company,

No Strings (of which she is a co-founder) goes about creating films.

Kathryn is the co-founder and Artistic Director of No Strings Productions. No

Strings is a not-for-profit organization that makes puppet videos that address

important issues concerning at-risk children worldwide. Kathryn started her

career as a puppeteer. She joined Jim Henson’s Muppets in 1980 and was

featured in many Muppet productions including The Great Muppet Caper, The

Muppets Take Manhattan, Labyrinth, numerous Muppet Specials, Little Muppet

Monsters, The Christmas Toy and Sesame Street. She performed the heroine,

Kira, in the Henson fantasy film, The Dark Crystal and played Mokey Fraggle

and Cotterpin Doozer on the HBO series Fraggle Rock. Later she played the

title role in the Nickelodeon series Allegra’s Window and helped to create and

produce the PBS literacy series Between the Lions. These days Kathryn mostly

produces, writes and directs for No Strings, but she will still put her hand into a

puppet if that extra hand is needed.

PING CHONG (USA)

TUESDAY •JUNE 8

Ping Chong was born in Toronto in 1946 and raised

works including The Travelogue Series and The Games, for which they shared

the Outstanding Achievement in Music Theatre Award in 1986.

In 1972, Ping Chong gathered a group of artists at Meredith Monk’s loft in New

York City to create Lazarus, his first independent theatre work. Since then, he has

created over 100 major works for the stage. Over the years, he has expanded

the range of his explorations to include video and visual arts installations. A

National Medal of the Arts recipient, Ping Chong is recognized as one of our

FRANÇOIS DELAROZIÈRE

(La Machine, France) THURSDAY•JUNE 10

Born in Marseille in 1963, François Delarozière

chooses the path of fine arts following five years of

agricultural studies, taking full advantage of these

years to explore all techniques associated with

visual arts. In 1983 in Aix en Provence, he meets the

company Royal de Luxe with whom he embarks upon a long companionship

focused on street theatre. Most notably, he designs and leads the construction

of The Giant, The Rhinoceros, The Little Giant, The Giraffes and The Little Girl

Giant. In 1999, he creates La Machine, a non-profit organization, constructing

theatre sets, carousels for children and machines for productions. As artistic

director of the company, François Delarozière ceaselessly explores the art of

moving machines and their capacity to arouse emotion in the spectator. In this

respect, his approach to street theatre is more visual design than narrative.

François Delarozière is also a scenographer and director. As such, he started

the Le Grand Répertoire-Machines de Spectacle, an exhibition-show presented

between 2003 and 2006 in Nantes, Calais, Toulouse, Anvers, Marseilles

and Paris and which attracted more than 700,000 spectators. In 2003 he

creates La Symphonie Mécanique, combining the world of classical music and

mechanical sounds. This philarmotechnical piece was co-written with Mino

Malan. In 2008, Les Mécaniques Savantes are presented as a world-wide

exclusive for Liverpool, European Capital of Culture. This mechanical bestiary

is also presented the following year in Japan for the 150th anniversary of the

opening of the port of Yokohama. In 2010, a new production Le Dîner des

petites Mécaniques is created, showing a new way to prepare and present

food, whilst the Expédition Végétale and its team of botanists take flight. His

latest creation, “Long Ma Jing Shen”, stages a Dragon-Horse created for the

50th anniversary of Franco-Chinese diplomatic relations in Beijing in 2015.

CHIA-YIN CHENG

(Lìzé Puppet Art Colony, Taiwan)

FRIDAY•JUNE 11

How Cheng become a puppeteer. A brief

introduction of features of the Puppet & Its Double

Theater, its belief and art. How the company works

in an unconventional way to create new work and

current productions and international collaborations.

After Cheng got her master degree in puppet arts at UConn, she co-founded

the Puppet & Its Double Theatre, the first contemporary puppet company in

Taiwan in 1999. Cheng has devoted herself to show audience the exquisiteness

of the puppets, and kept breaking the boundary of this puppet arts. Her works

are well known of their wide range of themes and extinguished by their poetic

quality. Many of her directing works have won or made to the final list of Art

Awards and have been presented in 15 countries.

Cheng has followed several puppet masters including Albrecht Roser

(Germany), Richard Bradshaw (Australia), Larry Reed (USA), Philippe Genty

(France), and Eric Bass (USA) in the international master classes. She is keen

to pass on the legacy she got from those masters (include her professor, Bart

P. Roccoberton) by giving training course and holding international exchange

programs. In 2013, Cheng started an ambitious project to set up the “Lìzé

Puppet Art Colony”in Yi-lan. Renovated from the old rice barns, Lìzé Puppet Art

Colony is equipped with performing studios, craft shops, exhibition hall, and

artist residency. It was opened in February 2017, constantly holding festivals

and artist in residence program to serve as the international laboratory for

puppet arts.

Imagine an entire semester devoted to studying theater. Only theater. Every person there is utterly

devoted to the same thing. A community of practitioners all working towards the same goals. That

is the National Theater Institute. Founded in 1970, a “semester-away” at NTI is a crucible unlike

any other credit-earning undergraduate training program in the nation. Offered in the spring and the

fall, NTI is for driven young artists eager to learn from master teachers ten hours a day, seven days

a week training in acting, directing, playwriting, design, voice, and movement. Additionally, two

weeks each semester are spent studying in London. NTI also offers semesters in Advanced Directing

and Advanced Playwriting.

national music theater institute

Called the place for those “who will be writing, designing, staging, and performing the Broadway

musicals of the 2020s and beyond” by Playbill, NMTI is offered every fall for students seeking a

launchpad into the music theater profession through ensemble training in all aspects of music theater.

The program offers a conservatory-like training regimen with a faculty of professional artists and a

two-week residency in New York City. NMTI is an ideal springboard for those pursuing a career in

music theater to hone their craft, find their voice, and meet with like-minded collaborators.

NTI’s Moscow Art Theatre Semester is a prestigious, credit-earning 13-week study abroad program

offered at the Moscow Art Theatre, the birthplace of modern theater and contemporary actor training.

Conservatory rigor meets cultural immersion with classes in acting, movement, voice, Russian theater

ABOUT THE MUSICAL

In 1900, Kansas is a Dry state – but it looks pretty Wet from where

Temperance activist Carry Nation is sitting. Rather than enforce the state’s

Prohibition Amendment, government officials are flouting the laws and

skimming off the top. Gawd appears one night to show Carry what she

needs to do – pick up some friggin bricks and break those big bad bottles

herself. She gains notoriety, supporters, and a Very Important Hatchet,

all of which aid in her fight to bring Temperance to the masses – whether

they like it or not.

ABOUT THE MUSICAL

In the land of Elflán, life and beauty flourish. We meet Adelita, an

adventurous and curious young elf eager to find what lies beyond the

horizon. When the evil spirit of La Mancha kidnaps her mother and

destroys her home, Adelita is forced to travel north to the land of the

Hadaseñas in hopes of being reunited with her again. Using fairy tales

and mythological themes, Little Duende comments on real-world matters

as it explores the border crisis, dual citizenship, and the consequences

of a dark family secret.

GEORGINA ESCOBAR is a queer Mexican

playwright and maker of sci-femme narratives,

ultra-humanistic mythos, frontera-funk stories,

and Latinx futurity plays. She works textually

and visually with plasticity, mobility, wabisabi,

and the Latin American perspective in

drama. She is a MacDowell Fellow, a Djerassi

Artist, Fornés Writing Workshop fellow, and the

recipient of the Kennedy Center Darrell Ayers Playwriting Award (2011).

She received the Outstanding Service to Women on the Border award in

2004 for her work as co-producer of the VDAY: Spotlight on the Women

of Juárez Campaign starring V (formerly Eve Ensler), Jane Fonda, and

Sally Field.

Her work has been featured in the Kilroy’s List, The Texas Review, Los

Bárbaros, McSweeney’s Anthology, and New Passport Press. Her plays

appear in books including “Scenes for Latinx Actors,” “Lighting The

Way”, and “El Fuego: Fueling the American Theatre with Latinx Plays.”

She has written articles as a lead contributor for American Theatre

Magazine, Industry Magazine, HowlRound, Culturebot, Extended Play,

TCG Circle, No Passport Blog, and Café Onda, among others. Her plays

have been produced across the USA and internationally in México, the

UK, Denmark, and Sweden. Artistic homes and presenters include INTAR

(Off Broadway), New York Children’s Theatre, Dixon Place, Clubbed

Thumb (EWG), Lincoln Center (Director’s Lab), and Bushwick Starr in

New York, Two Rivers (NJ), Milagro (PDX), Aurora Theatre (GA), and the

University of Texas at El Paso. Her plays include Then they forgot about

The Rest, Stone Heart (Kilroy’s), Ash Tree (Darrel Ayers Award), Sweep,

and Species:Human.

ROBI HAGER is a Mexican-American

musical theatre writer and performer. Shortly

after moving to the US from Mexico City at

the age of fourteen, his passion for the arts

grew rapidly and developed into a career

choice. He appeared on Broadway in the

2006 Tony Award-winning musical Spring

Awakening, as well as How To Succeed in

Business Without Really Trying, Bye Bye

Birdie, and Doctor Zhivago. He toured the

country with the 2015 Tony Award-winning musical Fun Home and

Spring Awakening. Regionally he appeared at Arden Theatre Company

in Ragtime, Next To Normal, Parade, and Fun Home. He played the role

of Clyde Barrow in Bonnie & Clyde at Theatre Under the Stars.

As a composer, he wrote songs "Quiero Soñar" and “Maduros” along

with friend Alex McCabe which appeared in films Top Five and Can You

Ever Forgive Me. His solo concert Robi Hager: So Far was part of the

Arden’s 2021 virtual season which featured his musical compositions, so

far. Robi is the creator of the LGBTQ musical Basic Witches, for which he

received a 2018 Barrymore Award nomination for best original score.

He is the composer for a new musical called Silueta, inspired by the art

of Ana Mendieta, being developed with Power Street Theatre Company

in Philadelphia. His most personal project yet is Little Duende, a Mexican

musical about courage, love, and family, as it explores the border crisis

and the hardships children go through in search of a better life. For more

PUP: Bonnie Duncan Presents "Squirrel Stole My Underpants"

July 24, 2021

National Puppetry Conference alumnus Bonnie Duncan brings Squirrel

Stole My Underpants, a 35-minute adventure tale for families, to the

amphitheater. Join us for a show and talkback, hosted by PUP Artistic

Director Pam Arciero. Using rod puppets, hand puppets, and object

manipulation, she brings to life an unordinary world. Blending puppetry,

dance, and physical theater, the performance explores that delicate time

in childhood when you desperately want to be a grown-up but still need

your blanket to make you feel safe.

PUP alumna Bonnie Duncan presented Squirrel Stole My Underpants for kids and families, plus

teaching them how they too can become puppet artists!

and the Peabody Award. Most recently, they wrote the book for Betty

Blue Eyes, which was produced in London’s West End by Sir Cameron

Mackintosh and was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best Musical.

"Being at the O'Neill's National Playwrights Conference

was a transformative experience for us, as it is for

everyone who has ever attended one of their programs. It was where

we began a professional and personal relationship that has lasted a

lifetime. To say that the O’Neill is significantly responsible for one’s life

may sound overly “dramatic” -- but in our case, it's true. So it seems

fitting to want to give back. To say thank you. And to encourage

others whose lives have been touched by the O’Neill to do the same.

We would like our legacy not just to be our work, but also to ensure

that the O'Neill will continue to provide the opportunities and

experience for new artists for a long time to come.”

The O’Neill is pleased to share that the 1964 Society has been renamed

for two longtime members of the O’Neill family, writers and trustees Ron

Cowen and Daniel Lipman, in recognition of their recent commitment with

a significant bequest.

Ron (NPC '67 - '69, '72) and Dan (NPC '72) first came to the O’Neill

as playwrights during the formative years of the National Playwrights

Conference. Cowen’s first play, Summertree, premiered at the O’Neill

in 1967 and was produced the following year at Lincoln Center where

it won the Drama Desk Award. After meeting at the O'Neill in 1972 they

began a lifelong personal and professional relationship that would result

in the creation of numerous plays, the groundbreaking TV series Queer

as Folk (U.S.) and Sisters, and their most important work: An Early Frost,

which aired on NBC in 1985. It was the first major film to ever address

the AIDS epidemic, and won for them the Emmy Award for their teleplay

The Cowen & Lipman Society recognizes those individuals who have

included a bequest or other type of planned gift for the O’Neill in their

estate plans; members are acknowledged in donor listings and invited

to an annual event at the O'Neill. If you have already named the

O'Neill in your estate plans, we hope you will let us know by contacting

Rob Mooney, Director of Development, at 860.443.5378 x 212 or via

email at rmooney@theoneill.org.

We would be honored to have you join Ron, Dan, and the following

individuals in the Cowen & Lipman Society, and to thank you for the

future gift that will ensure the endurance of a world-renowned haven

for new work and new artists for decades to come.
