A Letter from
Rich Anderson
Executive Director/CEO
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
Looking at our cover model, you might have asked yourself, “Are those really
buttons on that cat!?!” Yes, they sure are! And, those amazing buttons helped
save two-year-old Oreo’s life. She is alive today thanks to our doctors, our
medical team – and to caring friends like YOU who support the work of
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.
I am very excited to share this edition of The Shaggy Sheet with you and to
report that we are having a record-breaking year. In fact, we are on pace to
save more lives this year than during any other year in the 96-year history of
Peggy Adams!
But I know it requires thousands of animal lovers doing their part to make it
all possible. Choosing to save a life by adopting. Donating money or donating
time as a volunteer. Spreading the word about Peggy Adams (sharing this
magazine with others) and being an animal welfare advocate on social media.
Trapping neighborhood cats to be spayed or neutered and vaccinated, or
becoming a temporary foster parent for young kittens or an animal with
special needs.
As you’ll see on the back cover, some of our foster program volunteers share, in
their own words, why they find providing temporary care so rewarding. (And,
if you have children, we provide community service hours!)
Each and every role you choose to play is critical to the lifesaving mission
of Peggy Adams. Without YOU, none of our work would be possible.
Thank you for your dedication to saving lives and to building a more
humane community.
With compassion for the animals,
Rich Anderson
Providing Emergency Care
Oreo
Oreo's x-ray
Oreo, a two-year-old Domestic Shorthair cat, came
to Peggy Adams on February 13th after she escaped
from her home and was found hanging from her leg
on a fence. Our veterinarians discovered that, not only
did she have a serious deep wound on her leg, but her
jaw was also fractured.
We contacted one veterinary surgeon who told
us Oreo’s jaw could not be fixed. We contacted a
veterinary dentist for advice, and she recommended
a new procedure using buttons to relieve tension
to “wire” Oreo’s jaw shut to allow it to heal. We
performed daily bandage changes on her leg, but
the damage was too severe, and we had to amputate
her leg.
Oreo had the buttons and sutures holding her jaw
closed for five weeks to allow it to heal, but she learned
how to eat despite the sutures. Once the buttons were
removed, we found that her lower teeth were poking
her lip and the top of her mouth. After one final dental
procedure, Oreo was able to get adopted and has
never looked back!
Thanks to those who support Peggy Adams’ Olivia’s
Fund, we were able to provide Oreo the care that she
desperately needed and will continue to help those less
fortunate animals.
To learn more about Olivia’s Fund, please
visit PeggyAdams.org/Olivias-Fund
or call 561-472-8844.
About Olivia’s Fund: Olivia came to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League after being rescued from an animal hoarder. She had
significant hip dysplasia and muscle atrophy from abuse and neglect. Olivia had also been shot with a BB gun and needed surgery
to help repair her legs. In honor of Olivia, we set up a special fund to help give a second chance to dogs and cats with medical and
behavioral issues that can be fixed with surgery, special medical treatment, or training. We decided to call it “Olivia’s Fund.”
FROM SNOW TO SAND TEXAS UPDATES
As seen in our previous Shaggy Sheet edition, when
winter storm Uri hit Texas in February, Peggy Adams
led the effort to transfer 70 dogs from eight shelters in
the Austin area. With the help of Wings of Rescue, who
flew the dogs, and Austin Pets Alive!, 17 dogs went to
The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River
County while 53 went to Peggy Adams. To view
more information about this transfer, please
choose the Spring 2021 edition at
PeggyAdams.org/Shaggy-Sheet-Newsletter
Here are some wonderful updates…
Ella, Adopted 3/31/21
“I’m a first-time dog
mama and Ella was
exactly what I was
looking for. I’m very
happy that our paths
crossed. She was very shy
at first but not anymore.
She loves her toy dinosaur and
chicken. She loves giving hugs and
being cuddled. She forgot about her bed and has
claimed the couch as hers. Ella is almost potty trained
and knows basic commands. She is the sweetest when
you get to know her.” – Victoria
Cody, Adopted 4/10/21
Delilah,
Adopted 3/5/21
“Delilah is a wonderful companion
and is settling in just fine here in her
forever home. She is extremely smart
and very active! We walk together
around three or four miles every day, so
she is keeping me very active and fit! All my
neighbors just adore her! Planning on a road
trip with her to the mountains. Can’t wait!” – Cathy
“Cody has come a long way.
He finally came out of his
shell and loves to cuddle
and take long walks. He
also loves going on the
boat and he has been
going bird hunting.
We’ve been doing a lot of
training and he is learning
quick!” – Cory
To view our dogs and cats up for adoption, please visit PeggyAdams.org/Adopt
or stop by our Lesly S. Smith Pet Adoption Center
which is open daily from 11am – 6pm.
HUMANE EDUCATION PROGRAM
Become a Rescue Reader!
The Education Department is excited to share that
after over a year of conducting a program entitled
“We’re All Ears: The Virtual Read to the Animal
Program with Peggy Adams,” we have finally
brought it on to our campus with the launch of
Rescue Readers!
Rescue Readers is new program
that encourages children ages
five through fifteen to read
aloud to adoptable animals
at Peggy Adams Animal
Rescue League. Not only
are the children able to
develop their reading skills
and boost self-esteem in
front of a non-judgmental
audience, but it also provides
valuable socialization and love to
the shelter animals.
Twenty families were trained as Rescue Readers
for the 6-week summer program. They attended a
90-minute workshop to gain a deeper understanding
of life in the shelter, including an exercise focusing on
empathy. Kids actually changed places with a shelter
pet and viewed the world from their eyes. It was very
impactful. Additional activities focused on cat and
dog body language, and even how to properly position
themselves when reading.
This program will be offered seasonally
throughout the year. For upcoming orientation
and training dates, please visit
PeggyAdams.org/Rescue-Readers
Peggy Adams’ Education Department partnered
with the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida for its
Snuggles and Cuddles program to help ninety-nine
Girl Scouts from across 22 states (and Switzerland)
complete their Councils Own Badge.
The Snuggles and Cuddles program was designed to
teach girls about animal shelters. The Adoption Team
educated the Girl Scouts about the adoption process.
Veterinary Services Team Managers discussed career
paths and the care of animals while in the shelter.
And, our Humane Education Team informed the girls
about the many other services Peggy Adams provides
and led the girls in an interactive toy-making activity.
HUMANE EDUCATION PROGRAM
The “Mind & Body” Enrichment Workshop is really taking off!
At Peggy Adams, we have a very important job
– we take care of dogs and cats that are looking
for forever homes. While they are in our care,
we need to keep them busy... What we mean
by “busy” is giving them daily opportunities to
use their minds and their bodies. We call that
“enrichment.”
In this hands-on workshop, participants help
create special enrichment items such as toys,
treats and more for cats or dogs and then have
the opportunity to observe these items in use.
Students from Urban Youth Impact and
Palm Beach County Homeschoolers have
participated in both the Canine and Feline
version of this program.
Urban Youth Impact serves the most
at-risk inner-city youth in Palm Beach County,
primarily through an award-winning
after-school program.
Palm Beach County Homeschoolers is an all
ages, preschool to high school, and is an
inclusive volunteer-run homeschool support
group open to Palm Beach County and the
surrounding areas.
ADOPTION NEWS
By now, many know the pandemic increased 2020
pet adoption rates of cats and dogs. In fact, the rate
of adoptions at Peggy Adams has not slowed down in
2021 and we’ve broken many historical records.
Pet Store Cats
As of July 26th…
• 3,727 cats and dogs have found their forever
homes compared to 3,047 in 2020
• Off-site Adoptions were at 928 adoptions versus
599 adoptions
• Peggy Adams distributed over 110,000 lbs.
of food and litter through its Peggy’s Pantry
to those needing our assistance in
Palm Beach County
You might ask if we are seeing an increase in
returned pets as people have started to go back to the
workplace. As of July 2021, Peggy Adams has had
a 3% return rate which is very low compared to the
US benchmark of 5%. We find that people are not
returning their pandemic pets despite recent
news headlines. Although circumstances arise, the
happy truth is that most people are keeping their
newly adopted pets partly because people bonded
with their new animal companions during an
incredibly stressful time.
Kim & Kermit
At any given time, Peggy Adams has approximately
two hours between 11am-7pm. All cats and dogs are
spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
Peggy Adams’ Lesly S. Smith Adoption Center, located
at 3200 N. Military Trail in West Palm Beach, is open
daily from 11am-6pm for cat and dog adoptions.
Peggy Adams also has a great relationship with 15 pet
KIDS CORNER
It is always a great time to instill philanthropy in
children. Philanthropy is not only for adults or the
wealthy. Anyone trying to better our society is a
philanthropist!
Special thanks to Sebastian, who is a 15-year-old local
Boy Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, he
chose to help Peggy Adams because he
loves animals… especially dogs.
“I noticed, when I was doing my
community service hours in
some shelters, that the beds for
the dogs were rusty and getting
old and some of them didn’t have
any,” said Sebastian. “I wanted to
make sure all dogs are comfortable
and have a nice place to sleep while
waiting to get adopted. I’m happy that
I can make a difference and all dogs
deserve food, a bed and shelter.”
THANK YOU, Sebastian!
HAPPY TAILS
Simba, Adopted 4/14/21
“Approximately 3 months
ago, we came to Peggy
Adams after the death
of our last dog to bone
cancer. Our goal was
not to replace him but
to share our home with
another dog that needed
a home. We left that
day with Simba, a 50/50
Shepherd and Pyrenees Mix.”
Simba
“We would like to point out that
Tiffany, our adoption coordinator, was
extremely helpful. She listened carefully as we told
her about ourselves and our living situation before
introducing us to Simba. We explained that our home
is basically dog proof. There is a 6’ wooden fence
around the yard and the pool has a special safety fence
around it as well. We allow our dogs to sleep or play
in any room of the house including on beds, just as
any other member of the family does. There is
almost always someone home for company, and
we enjoy taking him on long walks twice a day and
playing fetch.”
“For a bit of background, my husband and I have
been married for 36 years and have 3 adult daughters.
During that time, we have always had dogs, as they
add a lot to our family. Simba is our 7th dog, the last
4 being Rescues (including 3 at one time) which is the
only kind we will ever get again. That being said, we
realize that each rescue is unique, and Simba certainly
had his set of challenges.”
“He was extremely anxious, afraid of cars, other
animals, and reacted horribly when anyone came near
him on anything with wheels. That first day, we were
a bit in shock as to what lay ahead of us as we were
a bit overwhelmed. However, we reached out to the
professionals at Peggy Adams for some input and had
a trainer work with us and Simba to get over the rough
spots (we have used trainer with all our dogs shortly
after they moved in and would recommend the same
to anyone who is adopting a shelter dog). Flashing
forward to today, it is hard to believe that he has only
been in our home for three months. It feels like
he has always been a part of our family!”
“It is important that people who are
about to adopt realize that the main
reason an animal ends up in a shelter
is because people may have unrealistic
expectations when bringing a dog
into their home. Keep in mind that
the dog you are bringing home needs
time, love, and care so that they can feel
like a part of your family. It will take a
few months for them to trust that you are
not going to leave them like their last family
did. Understand that the difficulties you may
encounter will not last forever, and be very patient
with them, and just take it one day at a time. Just like
anything else in life that is worthwhile, hard work
often brings great rewards – before you know it you
will have a forever friend to share your lives with.” –
Lola, Adopted 4/26/21
Lola
“Lola is doing great in her new home! She has been
spending her summer in Newport, Rhode Island and
spending lots of time hiking on the rocky coast and
splashing in the water. She is also working with a
trainer once a week to help with jumping and nibbly
behavior and is doing great! We love her so much!
Thanks for everything!” – Molly and Nick
Lily
Ichabod
Ichabod, Adopted 3/13/21
“Ichabod has been the best cat we could ever ask for!!!
When we adopted him, we were mourning the loss of
our beloved dog. And, while I'd never expect him to
fill that hole in my heart, he has created a section all
of his own in my heart! I could not even imagine
life without him... he greets us as soon as we
come home, he snuggles and sleeps with
us. He truly is the perfect cat!! Thank
you so very much for saving him and
blessing our home with his love!!!”
– Beth
Princess, Adopted 3/9/21
“I cannot explain how much we
love our Princess. She is exactly
the little buddy that our family had Princess
been looking for our daughter. They
are inseparable. Princess had a mass
on her foot, but Peggy Adams took care of
everything before we adopted her. Soon after the
adoption, Princess had a massive seizure. She is now
under medication and hasn't had another seizure in a
while. We just love her to pieces. She goes on errands
with us and has already been to the beach and a boat
ride. We are so glad that we decided to adopt an older
dog. We did not need to potty train or deal with the
chewing stage. She is simply perfect. We adore her.”
– Carmen
Lily, Adopted 7/13/21
“It’s hard to believe that it has been a few weeks since
we adopted Lily or Purrsifone – (name the foster
family gave her). She has brought so much joy to
our life. It’s amazing how big she is already. She is
just under 7 lbs. and still growing.
We REALLY want to thank the
foster family for making Lily’s
transition easy to a permanent
family. They made sure
Lily learned proper
kitty etiquette. Thanks
also to the staff for the
dedication you bring to
kittens and cats. We have
recommended your facility
to several friends who are
thinking of adopting a kitten.
You keep the shelter so clean
and we can see how much love
you have for your babies as they wait
for their fur-ever homes.”
BEHAVIOR & TRAINING
What do you mean
you have to go to work?
By Sandy Redford, Behavior
and Enrichment Manager
Now that we are able to go back to work, school and
take vacations, how can we help our pets acclimate to
the “new” new normal?
Let’s face it, for the past year and a half, our pets have
become accustomed to our almost constant presence.
For most of our pets, this has been wonderful. More
walks, more play, more binge television and more
snacks. What can we do now to help our pets while we
are away?
Enrichment. Let me say that again, enrichment.
What is enrichment you ask? Enrichment is anything
that makes the environment more interesting and
engaging. Enrichment allows an animal to engage in
species specific behaviors. Allowing animals to engage
in species specific behaviors reduces stress and often
keeps unwanted behaviors from developing. This
encourages your pets to do the things they love and to
do in ways that work for the whole family. For dogs,
this may be chewing, smelling, playing, and foraging.
For cats, this might be stalking, chasing, catching, and
playing with its “prey”.
Do not forget the importance of training. Training
helps develop a bond and communication with your
pet. Taking time helping your pet understand your
communication and how they fit into your family will
be rewarding and beneficial for the both of you.
To learn more about Behavior and
Training classes at Peggy Adams, please visit
PeggyAdams.org/Behavior
Making puzzles for your pups can be as easy as using
all those Amazon boxes and hiding some tasty treats
in the smallest box within a box. You can also hide
tasty treats in boxes around the house. Using all the
extra toilet paper rollers, we have to make fun ways
to hide a treat. For more foraging fun, put some treats
in a brown paper bag and “hide it” in the yard or on
your walks.
For your feline friends, you can get paper cups and
hide a treat underneath. We all know how much cats
LOVE to knock things off of tables and bookshelves.
Hiding treats in the Kitty Kondos can be fun and
interesting for your cat. Why not have some fun
feathers hanging down from the Kitty Kondo?
INTERNS and SONNY
Sonny came to Peggy Adams after being
dropped off at a local emergency clinic
on April 14 th . The ER clinic knew he was
injured and that Peggy Adams would be
able to give him the best chance at getting
better. Sonny was limping and his x-rays
indicated he had a hip fracture.
The surgery Sonny needed is called a femoral head
ostectomy (FHO) and it is not a surgery that had been
performed at Peggy Adams before. With the help
of our University of Florida (UF) shelter medicine
interns, we were able to remove the broken femoral
head so Sonny would be comfortable again while
walking. When we anesthetized Sonny for surgery, he
vomited a large piece of what appeared to be leather.
Therefore, we had to take x-rays of his abdomen to see
if there was more.
The x-rays revealed that his stomach was full of
something that shouldn’t be there. Two days after his
FHO, Sonny had a gastrotomy performed by our two
UF interns. They pulled out multiple pieces of very
hard fake leather.
Sonny’s Happy Tail Update:
“Sonny is doing great! He’s still getting acclimated,
but he fits right in! He was scared when we brought
him home, but he’s definitely getting better. He is so
attached to me - follows me everywhere.
I think he believes my backyard is his playroom
and when he goes out, he loves to run around and
roll around on the grass. It took a few days for him
to learn that’s where he's supposed to go to do his
business. He gets along very well with our cat Obi and
they play during the day, running after each other. It's
the cutest thing!!! We're so grateful for you guys.”
– Allison
Sonny with interns Dr. Jerika Brooks (left)
and Dr. Ashley Saver (right)
Sonny recovered very well and we were extra careful
that he didn’t eat anything else that he shouldn’t
during his time here! Sonny was adopted on June 27 th .
The REWARDS of FOSTERING…
“The most rewarding part of fostering is seeing my fosters be adopted
so quickly and connecting with their adopters. The rescue community is
amazing! If I could give advice to someone interested in fostering, it would
be that it’s okay to be emotional. You care enough to take care of these tiny
lives to the point where they can go out into the world and be adopted.
That takes alot. I still cry every time I return my fosters to Peggy Adams.
Partially because I'll miss them… and partially because I am so happy they
will have a wonderful life with their new family and I gave them the best
chance at that.” – Christine H. (Foster since June 2019)
“I started fostering 10 years ago with my daughter who was in 4 th grade
at the time. She had a love for cats. As she went into high school, she was
able to receive over 900 hours of community service by fostering. The most
rewarding part of fostering is knowing that you are saving the lives of these
precious kittens. Fostering is one of the most rewarding and educational
experiences for you and/or your child.” – Bebe M. (Foster since 2012)
“When I found Peggy Adams’ foster program, I
was excited because all they required from me
was time. Everything is provided. This way I knew I could help give a kitten
or cat a chance for a happy restart. The most rewarding thing to me is seeing
a cat start to trust you and love you. Once they start to realize that and enjoy
your presence, you know they have a chance for a great life with a forever
family. And, knowing your time and kindness to this animal had a large part
in it, is awesome!” – John S. (Foster since March 2021)
Want to become a Foster Volunteer and help Peggy Adams save more lives?
At any given time, Peggy Adams has 500 – 1,000 animals in its care. That’s where
fosters play a critical role! Fostering enables us to accept more homeless animals in our
program, especially neonate kittens found in our community. It’s easy to get started!
Simply visit PeggyAdams.org/Foster for more information.
Peggy Adams provides all of the supplies; foster homes provide the love.
Community service hours are also available for fostering.
