The summer 

atmosphere is 

fantastic and really 

pleasing to know businesses 

are open and hopefully 

busy with the holiday season. 

Hopefully we can get through this 

year’s summer with some enjoyable 

times. This year’s crises has certainly 

given worries to us all. However, the 

excitement of the holidays are here with 

people enjoying everything that Spain 

offers. 

However, not all are welcoming the 

heat. Quite a few people are suffering the 

high temperatures and humidity. Also, 

beware of the “downsides”; yes too much 

sun, not enough drinking water and too 

much alcohol, all can spoil your holiday. 

Although “al fresco” eating on the 

summer days and evenings can be quite 

relaxing and enjoyable. 

For those born from August 1st to 

August 22nd, they are members of the 

Leo zodiac signs. As one of the zodiac’s 

most attention-seeking signs, a Leo can 

most likely be identified as a most natural 

“star”. People born from August 23rd to 

August 31st are members of the Virgo 

sign. 

The most compatible signs with Leo

James Bond cars 25 Cars were used 

in over 50 years of the series PART II 

In the July edition were listed the first 12 cars 

used and here are the remaining 13 cars used in 

the James Bond films and the cars are listed in 

chronological order, from over 50 years of the James 

Bond series. From the humble Sunbeam Alpine in 

Dr. No, through to the beautiful Aston Martin DB5 in 

Skyfall, to the latest Hybrid Jaguar supercar in Spectre. 

In July’s edition were listed 12 of the famous cars and 

here are 13 more which now gives the total of the 25 

cars used. 

Renault Taxi. Renault 11. A View to a Kill (1985) 

13 After henchwoman May Day parachutes off the 

top of the Eiffel Tower, Bond must act quickly to catch 

her. He commandeers a Renault taxi, and executes a 

few stunts to keep up the pace, driving up a ramp and 

across the roof of a bus to get through some heavy 

traffic. However, as he drives off the roof and back onto 

the street, he crashes into a stop barrier, slicing the roof 

of the Renault right off. 

S1 doubled for the Rolls during the lake sequence. 

Aston Martin V8 

16 V8 Vantage Volante (1985). The Living Daylights 

(1987) With the introduction of a new James Bond, 

Timothy Dalton, in The Living Daylights, the producers 

brought back an Aston Martin after an 18 year absence. 

The Aston Martin V8 was kitted out with gadgets in the 

style of Goldfinger’s DB5. It had a control 

panel under the arm rest with buttons 

to operate lasers, missiles, 

outriggers, a rear rocket 

propulsion system and tire 

spikes for added traction 

control. It also had 

an all-band police 

radio receiver, a 

heads-up missile 

guidance 

display on the 

windshield, 

and a built-in 

self-destruct 

timer. 

Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II

. A View to a Kill (1985). This particular Rolls 

15 Royce, Silver Cloud, has a long history within the 

Bond franchise; it was the personal car of James Bond 

producer Cubby Broccoli. The reg number was “CUB1”, 

and was often seen in Cubby’s personal parking space at 

Pinewood studios. In 1965, the Rolls had a brief cameo 

in Thunderball. Twenty years later it became the main 

Bond car in A View to a Kill, albeit with a different licence 

number. The Rolls gets pushed into a lake. A 1958 Bentley 

Aston Martin DB5 

17 Model: D B 5 

(1963). Goldeneye 1995 Tomorrow 

Never Dies (1997) The famous Aston 

Martin DB5 returned for Pierce Brosnan’s 

introduction as James Bond in Goldeneye. MI6 

psychologist Caroline has been sent to evaluate Bond, 

who takes her for a drive in the DB5. They are soon 

enticed into a friendly race by the Ferrari Spider 355. 

Although in reality the DB5 wouldn’t come close to 

matching the Ferrari’s speed, 

BMW Z3 – Goldeneye (1995) was the first film 

18 of the series to put Bond in a BMW. Q introduces 

the BMW Z3 in his laboratory after his assistants 

demonstrate the parachute breaking system. Q briefs

Bond on the ejector seat, the all-points radar, and his 

personal favourite: stinger missiles housed behind the 

headlights. Despite the impressive show of 

gadgets, none of them were used in 

the film. The product placement 

worked a treat, causing a 

huge spike in sales for 

BMW. They received 

over 15,000 orders 

for Z3s, and it 

took over a year 

to fulfil them.

with 750iL 

badges (1997) 

Tomorrow Never Die 

Model: The BMW 

750iL features bullet proof 

windows and body that can withstand 

being hit by a sledgehammer. The door handles 

can also be electrified, shocking any would-be thieves. 

The car can be driven by remote control via Bond’s 

special Ericsson Mobile Phone, complete with touchpad 

controls. Bond uses the phone to activate a tear gas 

attack, stunning the henchmen standing around his car. 

He then remotely drives the car around a corner, and 

jumps in through the rear window while the car is still in 

motion.

BMW Z8. The World is Not Enough (1999) featured 

20 the BMW Z8, and was the end of a stream of 

product placements from BMW. Introduced to Bond by 

Q’s new assistant played by John Cleese, it appears 

as though they were running a little short on ideas. R 

mentions that the Z8 features titanium Armor, a multitasking 

heads up display and six beverage cup holders, 

with no other gadgets mentioned. 

. Ford Fairlane (1957) - Die Another Day (2002). 

21 After getting some valuable information from 

Havana MI6 agent Raoul, Bond asks to borrow a gun 

and a fast car. Perhaps as a joke, he is given a 1957 

Ford Fairlane. Bond drives the Ford along a picturesque 

highway to his hotel, and the car isn’t used or seen again. 

. Aston Martin V12 Vanquish - Die Another Day 

22 (2002). As introduced by John Cleese, playing 

Q, “Aston Martin call it the Vanquish, we call it the 

Vanish.” Die Another Day put Bond in an Aston Martin 

V12 Vanquish, complete with an invisibility cloak that 

has been widely quoted as the most ridiculous gadget 

in a James Bond film. The Aston features in an elaborate 

7 minute chase sequence around Gustav Graves’ ice 

palace. It begins when a snowmobile crashes into the 

Vanquish when its invisibility cloak is activated, giving 

away Bond’s location. 

. Aston Martin DBS V12 - Casino Royale. (2006). 

23 Quantum of Solace (2008) Casino Royale was 

the big reboot of the series, to give James Bond a more 

serious tone. Daniel Craig came equipped with the latest 

Aston Martin DBS V12, but the gadgets were minimal 

and realistic. There were two hidden trays housing a 

defibrillator and a silenced Walther PPK, contrasting the 

ridiculous gadgets of the prior film. In the next Bond film, 

Quantum of Solace, a slightly darker DBS V12 returned 

for an intense chase sequence in which the driver door 

was completely ripped off! 

. Aston Martin DB5 - Skyfall (1963). Casino Royale 

24 (2006) Skyfall (2012) The DB5 returned yet again in 

2006’s Casino Royale, where Bond won the car in a poker 

game. In Skyfall, Bond rescued M from an attack and took 

her to Scotland. 

. The Hybrid Jaguar supercar is driven by SPECTRE 

25 henchman in the new James Bond film. While 

James Bond has driven plenty of exotic cars over the 

years, now Aston and Jag are set to go head-to-head 

again, with the latest 007 movie, SPECTRE, featuring a 

high-speed chase in which the villain pursues Bond’s 

DB10 through the streets of Rome in a Jaguar C-X75. It’s 

just that this time neither car will be turning invisible – 

thank goodness.

Alma this is a difficult situation, but 

you would only be the messenger of 

the news, you are not responsible for 

what is actually going on; which is not 

your fault. Yes, everybody deserves 

the truth, but I would advise you 

not to interfere with what is going 

on. Nobody thanks the bearer of bad 

news and you stand to lose out just 

for telling the truth. Though it must 

seem hard on you, sit on the fence 

and let things happen. Be abreast of 

the situation and let’s see what comes 

next. 

My ten year old nephew likes playing 

with his dolls and spends more time 

combing their hair and dressing them 

up than playing with other kids. He 

seems to be locked in his little bubble, 

but this behaviour is not normal. If I 

say anything my sister gets mad at me.

that word, but I would ask which 

you are referring to: his playing 

with dolls or his not playing much 

with other children? My question 

would be, “Is he happy?” If he 

is content to play with his dolls 

then I can see nothing wrong with 

that, but if he is as withdrawn as 

you imply, then maybe he needs 

some help and guidance from an 

Educational Psychologist. Your 

sister is right to let him develop 

happily and in his own way, but 

please, be behind her if any further 

help is needed to help this young 

man’s healthy development. Your 

concern is notable, but hopefully, 

no intervention will be necessary.

never really get over the abuse 

that they have suffered, and some 

sadly never will. You are right to 

have stored anger that wells up 

inside you because you know the 

true reality of the abuse that you 

yourself went through, and you 

can see across generations that the 

story is sadly a never ending one. 

I think that you still store a little 

Adrian. The rash you describe 

is a heat rash between your legs 

and so keep it dry by using a 

medicated talcum powder NOT a 

cream of any kind. Foot powders 

are usually safe and gentle enough 

to use in the groin area. This is not 

a STD of any kind, but infections 

in the sweaty areas of the body 

may be a yeasty Thrush infection 

which needs this simple attention; 

especially in the hot weather of

Are sore eyes a 

symptom of COVID-19? 

If you woke up with sore eyes this morning, should 

you worry about having COVID-19? It is unlikely, 

although it cannot be ruled out. Getting tested is the 

only way to know for sure. 

COVID-19 generally attacks the lungs. People often 

have a dry cough and fever. We don’t hear much 

about COVID-related sore eyes because they are 

quite rare. Still, scientists suggest that eye pain could 

be a major symptom of COVID-19. On the other 

hand, your sore eyes could just be a symptom of 

allergies. 

How to understand the symptoms of 

COVID-19 

The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention 

say that these are the most common COVID-19 

symptoms: 

Fever or chills, cough, Shortness of breath or 

shortness of breath, fatigue, Muscle or body aches, 

Headache, new loss of taste or smell, throat pain, 

runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrheal. 

Research published in December 2020 in the journal 

BMJ Ophthalmology suggested that less than a 

fifth of COVID-positive people had eye-related 

symptoms. The researchers called eye pain “the 

most significant eye-related symptom” among the 

research study subjects. 

Additionally, a study published in JAMA 

Ophthalmology in August 2020 reported that young 

children infected with COVID-19 rubbed their eyes, 

developed conjunctivitis, 

and displayed other 

eye-related 

symptoms. 

Am I dealing with allergies or 

COVID-19? 

Experts from the American Academy of 

Ophthalmology turned this question around in an 

article published in January 2021. They discuss two 

main varieties of pink eye: 

• Allergic, caused by allergies. Allergic conjunctivitis 

can cause itchy eyes, watery eyes, and blood 

injections. Allergic conjunctivitis usually occurs at 

certain times of the year, such as during peak allergy 

season. 

• Viral, caused by viruses. Viral conjunctivitis can 

occur at any time of the year. It also causes a watery 

discharge thicker than tears. Itchy, watery eyes are 

less likely with viral conjunctivitis. 

“Another key difference between seasonal 

allergy symptoms and coronavirus symptoms is 

having a fever,” said James M. Huffman, MD, an 

ophthalmologist interviewed in the article. “Allergic 

people do not have a fever as a symptom, while 

coronavirus patients often do.” 

The article concludes that if you have conjunctivitis 

and COVID symptoms such as fever, shortness of 

breath, lack of taste, and other issues on the CDC list, 

then you should get tested for the virus as soon as 

possible. However, if you have pink eye problems 

without COVID symptoms, allergies are more likely 

to be the culprit. 

However, don’t ignore a case of allergic 

conjunctivitis. Talk to your ophthalmologist about 

treating your symptoms so they don’t interrupt your 

life.

What are the links between sore eyes and COVID-19? 

Most people with COVID-19 do not report eye pain 

or any other eye problems, according to the journal 

BMJ Open Ophthalmology. The magazine reported 

on a survey of 83 people who tested positive for 

COVID-19. Among the respondents: 

• 90% had fatigue 

• 76% had a fever 

• 70% had loss of smell or taste. 

• 66% had a dry cough 

Eye-related symptoms were much less common 

among survey participants: 

• 18% had sensitivity to light 

• 17% had itchy eyes 

• 16% had eye pain 

The survey asked each participant what symptoms 

they had before contracting COVID. Almost none 

had sore eyes before getting infected. But It does not 

mean that sore eyes are not relevant with it comes to 

COVID-19. 

The researchers cited evidence suggesting that the 

COVID-19 virus could sneak into the body via the 

cornea, the clear half-dome covering the front-centre

portion of the eyeball. They also made an educated 

guess that COVID-19 could spread via tears into the 

place where it does the most damage — the lungs. 

How? Via the tear ducts in the eyelids that carry tears 

away from the eyes and into the nasal cavity. From 

there, the virus could be inhaled into the lungs. More 

research needs to be done on this field. 

What to do if you think your sore 

eyes are related to COVID-19 

Think about the questions you get at the doctor’s 

office to screen you for COVID-19, such as: 

• Have you come in contact with somebody you 

know has tested positive? 

• Do you have a high fever, coughing, shortness of 

breath, nausea or other common symptoms? 

If you answer yes to these kinds of questions and you 

have sore eyes, then you need to talk to your medical 

provider about a COVID-19 test. 

On the other hand, if you answer no to all the COVIDscreening 

questions and it’s allergy season, your sore 

eyes might simply be an allergic reaction. A visit to an 

eye doctor should clear things up.

welcome to this month´s All Time 

Greats which is my tribute to one 

of my favourite singers of the good old 

days the late Helen Reddy. After a 

spell of poor health which , I 

believe, included dementia 

towards the end , Helen died 

in Los Angeles at the end of 

September 2020. She was 78 

but it was in the 1970s and 

her 30s that she touched the 

very heights of fame and 

fortune and earned herself the 

nickname “The Queen Of 70s 

Pop.” 

By 1966 the two leading bands 

of the beat erI do not think Helen would 

have minded being described as feisty, she 

was one very determined girl who know 

that she would have to fight to turn her 

considerable talent into superstardom. 

Arriving in the United States in 1966 she 

was already steeped in showbusiness 

& brought with her a daughter 

, Traci, the product of getting 

married in her teens back in 

her native Australia. One 

Helen´s most popular songs 

is “You And Me Against The 

World” & it is Traci´s voice 

you hear at the start & end of 

the song. Discovering her prize 

for winning a talent contest in 

Oz was not a recording contract in 

America but instead only an audition 

for one which did not go well, Helen 

decided to stay & simply knuckled down

person Helen found the 

beginning of a pop 

breakthrough with her 

version of “I Don´t 

Know How To Love 

Him” in 1971 but it 

was her next record 

that made her name 

& set off a string of 

hits. Already active in 

the growing movement 

for women´s rights Helen 

helped to write a song in early 

1972 that she released , as things 

turned out, at exactly the right moment as 

it became and has remained an anthem for 

women´s struggle for equality. The song is 

, of course, “I Am Woman” which went to 

number one in the charts & earned Helen 

a Grammy Award. At the ceremony Helen 

was to famously say “ I thank God because 

SHE makes everything possible!” To quote 

the title of one of her albums , for Helen 

it had been a “Long Hard Climb” but she 

finally achieved the stardom she wanted & 

deserved. The 70s did indeed see a string 

of big hits , including the intriguing “Angie 

Baby” which still has people puzzling as to 

its story & message. Helen enjoyed seasons 

of headlining in Las Vegas , World tours 

, many TV shows & some acting in films 

notably “Airplane” & “Pete´s Dragon.” 

By the end of the 70s Helen finest hour 

as a charting artist has come & gone but 

she reinvented herself as an actress/singer 

in a series of stage musicals & was still 

on hand to host & perform in a number 

of TV Specials. She continued to work on 

the cabaret circuit & would sporadically 

release albums until, turning 60, she retired 

from performing & returned to her native 

Australia. Living in Sydney , Helen found a 

new interest & career in hypnotherapy 

but by 2008 she was living alone 

& reclusively in her apartment 

overlooking Sydney Harbour 

quite happy that she could 

go out to do her shopping 

& not be recognised. Helen 

vowed that she would

party she changed her mind & 

agreed to sing again providing 

she could select her repertoire & 

not just trawl through her hits from 

the 70s. It was this late flowering that took 

Helen back to California where , sadly not a 

well lady at the end, she left us last year. 

I am delighted to regularly include 

Helen Reddy songs in the Love Songs 

part of my Sunday morning show on 

Pure Gold FM & I hope it will interest 

you to know that a compilation of her 

hits will form part of “JC´s Podcast” 

for the week commencing Saturday 

14th August. Her songs still sound 

very good to me even after all the years

12 August 1100: King 

William II is killed by 

an arrow in mysterious 

circumstances 

While hunting in the New 

Forest in 1100, William 

II (Rufus) was shot and 

killed by an arrow fired 

by nobleman Walter Tirel. 

However, it has since been 

suggested that it could 

have been an assassination. 

During the hunt, Walter 

Tirel took a shot at a stag, 

yet the arrow missed and hit 

the king in the chest. Tirel 

fled the scene. Learning of 

the king’s death, William’s 

brother, Henry, proclaim 

himself king. It is possible 

that Henry had planned for 

his brother’s murder in order 

to gain the throne, yet this is 

disputed among scholars. 

21 August 1774: Joseph 

Priestley discovers 

oxygen 

British minister and chemist 

Joseph Priestley discovered 

the gas oxygen. After 

experimenting with different 

‘airs’, Priestley conducted an 

experiment that would make 

his scientific work famous. 

By using what was referred 

to as a ‘burning lens’, he 

placed a lump of mercuric 

oxide in a glass container and 

focused some sunlight onto 

the compound. A colourless 

gas was emitted and a candle 

began to burn. To begin 

with, Priestley called this 

‘dephlogisticated air’, before 

further tests confirmed the 

discovery of oxygen.

After first developing it in 

the early 1890s, Thomas 

Edison secured a patent for 

the kinetograph, a camera 

that could record film 

footage. His camera, unlike

kinetograph. After building 

a small film studio in 1893, 

Edison was able to capture 

footage and create films

The first telegram was sent 

from the New York Times 

office in order to discover 

how long it would take for a

it was received by the New 

York Times office just 16.5

Mona Lisa is stolen in 

France 

Leonardo da Vinci’s famous 

painting was stolen from the 

Louvre in Paris on this day 

in 1911. Italian handyman 

Vincenzo Peruggia decided 

to steal the 16th-century 

painting after being 

employed by the Louvre 

to construct protective 

glass cases for some of the 

museum’s most famous 

works, which included the 

Mona Lisa. The painting was 

not reported missing until 24 

hours later. It was not until 

two years later, December 

1913, that the painting was 

finally recovered. Peruggia 

received a seven-month jail 

sentence. 

627 August 1955: The 

Guinness Book of World 

Records is published 

The first edition of The 

Guinness Book of Records 

was published on 27 August 

1955. Sir Hugh Beaver, the 

managing director of the 

Guinness Brewery, first came 

up with the idea of the book 

of records in the early 1950s 

following an argument at 

a shooting party about the

ONE OF MY 

WORST FLIGHTS 

As I have mentioned before I love 

flying, in fact anything to do with 

airlines. Like many writers I can 

soak up atmosphere in places, euphoria, 

despair, pain, grief, it’s all there in an 

airport. However, this hasn’t deterred me 

from brushing that aside and bouncing 

into the Arrivals Hall full of enthusiasm 

for an imminent lift-off. All this despite a 

couple of rather disastrous journeys. 

The first was a return flight from 

Johannesburg to London Heathrow, 

when I was travelling standby to visit my 

elderly mother in the Cotswolds. 

Now we’d always been very lucky on 

standby, having flown several times to 

various countries courtesy of a family 

member working for the airlines. 

I queued up at the desk, watched 

my case whisked off on its way to the 

hold, waltzed through customs and 

immigration and stood to one side at 

the passenger check in. Good I was first 

in line, until a captain with his family 

pushed in front. He’d have priority of 

course, I was only an airline staff family 

on standby, but how he found the time to 

produce so many children I’ll never know, 

he must have been on the short haul route. 

To my horror, he was joined by yet 

another fruitful family who walked off all 

smiles, out of sight down the airbridge. 

I was bumped and went off to find my 

suitcase. It was nowhere to be seen but 

they assured me it would have been 

offloaded and lurking somewhere in the 

airport, which is simply huge. 

I was still searching as the staff knocked 

off, the lights went out and I was 

practically the only person left wandering 

from one cavernous hall to the next. 

All I could do was phone a friend, since 

I’d already flown two hours from my 

home town and he kindly collected me 

and gave me a bed for the night. 

He ferried me back to the airport at 

seven the next morning on his way to 

work, which suited me fine as it would 

give me all day to hunt down my luggage. 

The flights for London always departed in 

the late evenings since the altitude does 

not allow complete refuelling in the hot 

daytime temperatures. 

I searched high and low, but decided my 

case must be waiting for me at Heathrow. 

Again, I queued at the BA desk and was 

bumped early, so in desperation I raced 

over to the South African Airways check 

as they are part of the Star Alliance and 

I was sure they’d take pity on me, and 

they did. But there was a problem. The 

previous night the crew had relieved me 

of my boarding pass, all I had was a ticket 

stub. A kind staff member flew up to the

BA office, retrieved a paper and they 

waved me onto the airbridge. 

Second time lucky as I arrived at the 

door to the plane only to find there was 

someone in the seat assigned to me. A 

friendly attendant told me to hang around 

in the galley for a while and then sadly 

told me there was only space in first class. 

Would I mind? After some consideration, 

possibly a millisecond, I agreed. This was 

the way to travel, except they had relieved 

me of my handbag at check in, with no 

suitcase, I had to have something in the 

hold. Now, I didn’t have as much as a 

paper hankie on me, but they provide lot 

of extra goodies for the wealthy traveller. 

My case was nowhere to be seen at 

Heathrow and if you’ve ever worried 

about security and bombs and the like, 

never, ever visit the hall with its mountains 

of unclaimed luggage. I did get my case 

back, delivered to me three days later, 

minus cling film wrap and most of the 

contents. 

The flight back was also not your 

average journey either. As I stepped foot 

on the plane, I was first shown to a jump 

seat, the little one in the dark with no tray 

and no telly. Then they found me a first 

class seat, and stowed my hand luggage 

in the overhead locker for me. Then there 

was a commotion and I was hauled out 

of first class and sent upstairs to cattle 

class to the disapproving looks of many 

of the passengers. It was one of my more 

uncomfortable journeys and no, they 

don’t give you free tissues, ear plugs etc 

in the lower cost seats.

on other back pain treatments. 

It’s important to incorporate exercises 

that work all of your abdominal

involve the major muscles in your

BETTY 

Betty has been with her Foster mum since she 

found her in 2017 and sadly she is still there, 

no idea why she is a lovely girl and not a bad 

bone in her body. This best describes Betty’s 

charácter she is “Precious such a beautiful 

baby. Just loves her cuddles and sleeping 

on the sofa. Walks great on/ off lead. Great 

with other dogs. Not so good with cats. Betty 

is looking for a best human buddy who can 

spend lots of time with her. She just loves to 

be always by your side, helping, noseying, 

cuddling and giving sloppy kisses. 

CASSIE 

Cassie was taken on by PEPA in Feb 2020, she has 

been with her carer all this time in a small family 

run kennels, she was in a very bad state when she 

came in, she was very thin, very nervous. Cassie is 

a different dog now, its like she shines, she loves to 

be with people and would love to find a lap to rest 

her head on. Cassie is an older girl about 10 years 

old she probably doesn’t have many more years, it 

would change her life if we could find a lovely home 

for her. Cassie is not great with little dogs or other 

females as she likes any attention to be all hers, I 

would think this is normal when you are desperate 

to be loved. Hopefully someone will read this and go 

and see her.

OF BRITAIN’S MOVED 

ENVIRONMENTALIST 

David James Bellamy OBE (1933- 

2019) was an English botanist, 

television presenter, author, and 

environmental campaigner. In the early 

1970s, Bellamy helped to establish Durham 

Wildlife Trust and remained a key player in 

the conservation movement for a number 

of decades. 

David Bellamy’s popularity as a 

personable television star endeared him 

to millions wherever English language 

television was then enjoyed. Bellamy was 

the originator, along with David Shreeve 

and the Conservation Foundation, which 

he also founded, of the Ford European 

Conservation Awards. 

His exuberant and demonstrative 

presentation of science topics featured 

on programmes such as Don’t 

Ask Me along with other scientific 

personalities such as Magnus Pyke, 

Miriam Stoppard, and Rob Buckman. 

He wrote, appeared in, or presented 

hundreds of television programmes 

on botany, ecology, environmentalism. 

Considered to be Britain’s most loved 

television presenter he fell victim 

to the BBC’s ‘Cancel Culture’. 

Bellamy’s downfall relegated him 

from superstar to super has been 

overnight. 

The fatal words uttered by David 

Bellamy were, ‘I’m sceptical about manmade 

climate change. There’s absolutely 

no proof that carbon dioxide will kill us all. 

It’s not a poison, it’s the most important 

gas in the world. Carbon dioxide is an 

airborne fertiliser. How can farmers grow 

increasing amounts of food without a rise 

in CO2?’ 

The 80-year-old environmentalist and 

former broadcaster admitted that his 

scepticism signalled the end of his career 

as he had known it. Overnight, David 

Bellamy became a non-person. 

‘From that moment, I really wasn’t 

welcome at the BBC,’ he said.

in global warming. My career dried up. I 

was thrown out of my own conservation 

groups and I got spat at in London.’ 

Mr Bellamy said things first began to 

change in 1996 when he spoke out against 

wind farms during one of his regular 

appearances on Blue Peter. ‘That was the 

beginning really,’ he told media. ‘From that 

moment, I was not welcome at the BBC.’ 

‘I worked with the Wildlife Trusts for 52 

years,’ he said ‘And when they dropped 

me, they didn’t even tell me. They didn’t 

have the guts. ‘I read about it in the 

newspapers. Can you believe it? 

Now they don’t want to be anywhere 

near me. But what are they doing? The 

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) might have 

saved a few pandas, but what about the 

forests? What have Greenpeace actually 

achieved?’ 

Mr Bellamy’s wife Rosemary admitted 

that they had both been devastated by the 

developments. ‘It did upset us terribly,’ she

said. ‘But we pretended not to be upset, 

didn’t we David? The best thing to do was 

not to talk about it. So, we didn’t. It’s been 

very difficult because he does feel strongly 

about things.’ 

Mr Bellamy insisted that he had no 

regrets about being so outspoken and had 

not changed his opinions about global 

warming. 

‘I still say it’s poppycock,’ he said. ‘For 

the last 16 years, temperatures have been 

going down and the carbon dioxide has 

been going up and crops have got greener 

and grow quicker. We’ve done plenty to 

smash up the planet, but there’s been no 

global warming caused by man. If you 

believe it, fine. But I don’t and there’s 

thousands like me.’ 

He added: ‘Who cares if they’ve put me 

on the back burner? I can still talk to my 

flowers, which are all fine and growing 

amazingly and say, ‘Thank you very much, 

David!’

Learning to Cook 

Part 6

When you are considered as a 

young person to be “academic” 

it means that lots of subjects are 

never introduced to you. So, for me, there 

would be no Needlework, or Art, or Music, 

and no Domestic Science. So, when 

I left home, at 23, I could not 

cook. 

Mum had taught me 

to sew, as she was a 

fantastic dressmaker 

and tailoress. But she 

was a basic cook, 

and had no interest 

in it. I could make 

a good sandwich, 

apple pie and egg 

custard, and that 

was all - until my 

future mother-in-law 

showed me how to 

make a chocolate cake. 

When I found myself in 

the big wide world, living 

on my own, it was essential that 

I learned to cook, particularly as I was 

getting married the following year. 

From the high rise block where I lived, 

it was a short walk across playing fields to 

the local college, where night school courses 

were available. There was no actual Cookery 

Course, but for 2 hours on a Wednesday 

evening I could join “Entertaining”. 

Enthusiastically I went to the first 

meeting. All the other women were at least 

10 years older than me, mostly married 

and with successful husbands. I had 

nothing in common with any of 

them. 

Our teacher told us that 

she would demonstrate 

a different form of 

Entertaining each week 

and in the second 

half of the class we 

would cook something 

for which we had 

been given the list of 

ingredients the previous 

week. It was assumed 

that we were all adequate 

cooks. 

This was going to be a 

challenge. 

The next day at school, I set the 

class a piece of written work to do, and 

made the excuse that I would be in the Prep, 

Room, getting apparatus ready for the next 

class “if you need me”.

where my mate Shirley was in charge. 

“I’ve got the recipe for what I have to 

cook on Wednesday, but I need you to help 

me as its the first time I’m going to cook” I 

explained. 

“No problem. What are you making?” she 

asked. 

Danish Pastries. 

She uttered an expletive, followed by 

“What? I’ve never cooked those 

myself.” 

I was in at the deep 

end - but from that very 

first Wednesday, I 

loved every minute. 

I was hooked. And 

Shirley couldn’t 

wait for Thursday 

mornings, to see 

what the challenge 

for the next week 

would be. Even 

involving her Sixth 

Form girls some 

weeks. 

By the time we 

left Lincolnshire 5 

years later, when my 

husband’s job took us to 

the Potteries in Staffordshire, 

I was a very competent cook and 

had developed a passion that would last a 

lifetime. 

I gave up teaching when my daughter 

was born, and when she was 3 we bought a 

big old Victorian house that was in need of 

renovation. My husband told me that a friend 

of his - Colin - who worked for a different 

pharmaceutical company - would be coming 

from 4pm to 6pm each weekday evening, to 

re-wire the house - over a period of time. 

It was during these hours that I would be 

preparing and cooking our evening meal, and 

giving “tasters” to Colin. He couldn’t believe 

the type of food and the trouble I went to 

every day to provide that evening meal for 

2 of us. My husband, Brian, always sang my 

praises and said he was my biggest fan. Colin 

told him he was a lucky man. 

After a few weeks, Colin asked if I would 

be prepared to do a “business lunch” for 8 

people at one of the local surgeries. He would 

do a presentation for the pharmaceutical 

company he worked for, and then the 

doctors would sit down with him 

and I would serve lunch. 

Although this was 

only once a month for 

Colin, it soon became a 

weekly event for me as 

Surgeries were giving 

my name to other 

companies who then 

approached me. 

Health Centres, 

Postgraduate Centres, 

Hospital departments, 

etc., - all came on board. 

So I set up “Moorland 

Catering” and for 25 

years indulged myself in 

an enormous variety of “food 

adventures” about which I shall 

write more. 

For a time, from almost 15 years ago, I was 

able to combine my 2 major skills - teaching 

and cooking, when Moraira U3A was born. 

Mine was the first class to start. 

I am still in touch with some of the ladies 

who came to my first Cooking Classes - 

through the Charity “Help” for which I now 

work at their Teulada Shop. 

I will never know if my prophecy will come 

true - that the last thing I will do before I die, 

will be to cook a meal.

of local dishes and international style items. The 

Service is friendly and attentive and the food is of 

really high quality, it would bear comparison with 

some of the prestige places in the larger cities 

It is a real gem and you will look forward to eating 

there again and again, as the service is quick 

and friendly, food is tasty. Location is good. The 

whole place feels perfect and is worth trying. El 

Nido’s paella is also a must and is very tasty and 

good value plus an excellent house wine. There 

is so much variety in Paella choices from a mixed 

meat or fish, vegetable, Seafood, Mellow rice with 

Lobster, to Saffron and Squid and many more to 

think about. The tapas are mouth-watering from 

mixed fried fish, Clams in Marina sauce, Grilled 

cuttlefish to name but a few. A big variety of meat 

and fish menus such as Grilled Pork fillet, Rabbit 

cooked in garlic seasoning, Duck. Or Grilled 

Seabass, Lobster stew, Hake to grilled prawns 

and many more to choose from. Childrens’ menus 

available.

he words of the songs of the past are there on my 

mind, together with all that I have accumulated , so 

Tfar, in my life, which I store there for whatever reason. 

It is truly a mixture of surprise and shock to my burgeoning 

mind whenever I pull out a treasured memory out of the 

box to share or hold dear with myself. 

I regret preciously little, and that’s because all my life 

I have taken on board the ups and the downs, and the 

solutions, which were a part of the questions that I asked 

back then, and which I still remember now in the infinite 

wisdom of my expanding and ever explorative mind. This 

is possibly why I have lived such an interesting life, and so 

too do I have much to be thankful for in my journey which 

has taken me across the Planet and tested me from time to 

time with each story that I write, and with everything that 

I like to share. I love to share because this is a storybook 

based on the solid principles of Spiritual growth, the 

achievable and the as yet to be completed complete bucket 

list of things that I now want to do. I have never ever been 

bored my entire life. There is always something that I want 

to do, and even if I do not manage to complete it, or I am 

faced with obstacles on the way, at least I had the intention 

to want it to happen for me, and maybe, just maybe, it still 

will happen; because I have precious desires that may or 

may not happen, but which are a part of the impetus that 

keeps me keen, alive and kicking too. If it all sounds crazy 

then maybe I am. Though I have no proof of my sanity I do 

have the experience and the depth of knowledge that has 

allowed me to live a life without regret, without sadness 

and with a great aspiration that my intentions were there to 

be interpreted by me in pursuant of my Spiritual journey of 

life. I do not walk on an elevated pathway, but I can closely 

see the good and the bad of the World that we now inhabit, 

and I am as yet unsure what part of it I can relate to more 

strongly. 

In times of panic and uncertainty, I have chosen to live 

my life in the rhythm and the grace of faith and hope. My 

faith and belief in the Spirit World, and the continuity of 

my life’s achievements have rewarded me in ways that 

I cannot fathom. I am content with very little and my 

needs are most modest in line with the expectations and 

the broken promises of others. I take nothing for granted, 

and as a man of the World I have learned that doing a job 

well is, in a way, an installment taking me closer to where 

I should be. 

So much has happened by magic. Yes, there is magic but 

it is often so hard to see, and it defies faith when it appears. 

Whenever we are needy or deserving there comes a priority 

in our lives to settle things and we wish to live a life that is 

calm and compensating or even banal. However there are 

alternatives and ways of communicating. Being unafraid 

to ask for whatever I deserve is my strongest maxim; and it 

works. I figure that if indeed I do deserve something, that 

I should have it. Subject to the auspices of Spiritual law, 

with which I always abide, there are always unexpected 

surprises and things to deal with which I would rather not. 

Sometimes the strategy of wait and see is nothing more 

than sheer procrastination, but it can change things if you 

just charge in there and expect that everyone else will do 

their job well, even if you don’t! Human Error is a damned 

nuisance but it exists and so it has to be relied upon. I 

have made so many mistakes in my life, but I learned 

from many, and just a few were sent to show me the true 

error of my ways, which was Spirit’s way of saying, “Find 

another way.” Which of course I did. Try and try again 

were poignant words in my vocabulary and they served 

to teach me a lot. I learned from mistakes and when faced 

with the barbarity of human unkindness I thrived because 

I had back up. 

Fear is one of the worst of the four letter words. When 

faced with fear we are irrational and timid, we become 

negative and open to the fates, which we strongly believe 

are against us, and everything that we do. Fear never 

helped anyone, although the overcoming of fear was for 

me a mindset that took time to fully understand, but which 

helped me to remain balanced and focused in times of 

stress and trial and tribulation. Everything happens for 

some good reason….even if we do not yet know what it is. 

As I age my only fear is losing my mind. I live for today 

but I am inspired and my life fuelled on the experiences 

of a past that were mine in the making. To lose who I am 

would be the worst scenario, and to not be a part of what 

tomorrow could bring removes for me the hope that life is 

based upon. 

“ If I could read your mind love 

What a tale your thoughts would tell 

Just like a paperback novel 

The kind the drugstore sells. 

When you reach the part where the heartache comes 

The hero would be me. 

Heroes often fail 

And you won’t read that book again 

Because the ending’s just too hard to take!” 

Unlike the words of the song, be unafraid to ever be a 

Hero in a World that’s only re-inventing itself!

Skewered Kebabs are a great way of 

mixing things up, Meat, Fish. Fruit or 

Vegetable kebabs. 

Try Mixed Meat Kebabs, Spicy Lamb 

Kebabs, Spicy Vegetable, Herby Cod 

kebabs or Fish with Orange 

Obviously people expect Burgers, 

Sausages & Steak, so don’t disappoint, 

just flavour them up a little. 

The use of Chicken, whether legs or 

drumsticks coated in spicy natural yogurt 

is a wow. 

Serve all the above with Jacket Potatoes 

and a good salad. 

Here is my recipe for a different Baked 

Tomato. 

12 Large Beef Tomatoes, skinned and 

halved 

2-3 Cloves of finely chopped garlic 

2 tablespoons ex virgin olive oil 

12 large Basil Leaves 

12 Black olives 

Salt & Black Pepper

For the Dressing 

2 tablespoons of ex virgin olive oil 

2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar 

Garnish with Basil leaves & Black 

Olives 

Roast tomatoes for 1 hour, dress, 

garnish and serve with good crusty 

bread. 

And for the Salad 

Cubed Water Melon 

Feta Cheese 

Red Onion 

Chopped Mint 

Little Gem Lettuce (ripped) 

Mix ingredients together, tossed in a 

good french dressing, serve on top of 

the lettuce. 

To accompany this glorious food, 

a good Rioja Rose & Sangria is my 

choice, try the Sangria made with Cava 

instead of lemonade it’s a must. 

Keep cool, keep barbecuing and keep 

the children safely at bay.

JOHN’S LIFE WAS CELEBRATED AT HIS FUNERAL ON SUNDAY 1ST AUGUST WHICH WAS ATTENDED BY HIS 

BELOVED FAMILY AND CLOSE FRIENDS. THERE WERE TRIBUTES AND MEMORIES AS WELL AS FAVOURITE 

SONGS RECORDED BY JOHN. THE COSTA BLANCA MALE VOICE CHOIR GAVE WONDERFUL RENDITIONS OF 

“GWHODDIAD” AND “YOU RAISE ME UP”

Are we happy being 

“sheeple” ?......... 

Someone I met recently said that many of us are 

“sheeple” and I think that just about sums up many of 

us in the human race today....ever striving for what we 

think we should be, and totally losing appreciation for what 

we really are as a person in our own right. 

I wonder if we ever think about the fact that we can 

sometimes be like that? Not “people”, with our own minds 

and preferences, but “sheeple”, constantly following, not 

even knowing or caring at times, which direction in life we 

are going in. 

So many of us strive to be like others....pop stars, 

footballers, film stars, celebrities in other walks of life, 

without paying any attention to the differences that make it 

impossible to achieve those goals. 

We are all humans and yet we can learn a lot from the 

other side of life....the animal kingdom. Look how 

happily they accept their differences and live 

with them! Does the camel wish it looked 

like an elephant? Does a fox wish it was 

like a rabbit?- They are all different, but 

still animals....we are all different, but 

still humans, so why do we try to be 

like someone else with different bone 

structure, different height, different 

appearance all round? When are we 

ever going to be content with who 

WE are and WHAT we are capable 

of being?

So many of us are like a load of sheep, 

following anything and everything in the 

public eye and that is so sad. Why sad? 

Because we are making a statement.... 

we are not satisfied with the person we 

are and the gifts that we have. We are 

prepared on certain occasions to lose our 

own personal value completely. Why can’t 

we understand and value the amazing 

variety in the human race and live every 

day to the full, and love and enjoy being 

who WE are? 

I know people who are very attractive, 

but who have spent their whole lives 

trying to be a copy of someone else, and 

I could cry to think of what has been 

lost in that process. We can give up our 

own identities by losing out on who 

WE are...what a waste! If we are 

not happy about some of the 

things about us we can make 

improvements. We can aim for 

everything that is going to be 

good for us and things that will improve 

our lives, but we are all so different that it 

is sad to just end up being a carbon copy 

of someone who we don’t even know, 

and whose character may well be very 

dubious! I can think of a few people who 

have carbon copies all over the place and 

yet they are not people to be admired. 

Perhaps some of us don’t realise that 

we all have the same opportunities 

MENTALLY as adults, and what we 

THINK is what we become. Everything we 

do starts with a thought, so why not think 

differently, stop following the crowds and 

become who YOU really are!

Hi Folks 

Here I go again saying how hot it is but it is 

expected in August and it is Spain but I still 

complain every year woof woof, pant pant. 

As you can see from the photo 

Alfie won’t leave my side keeps 

cleaning me but it is a bit 

hot for this but I am easy 

going and let him do it. 

Well what a hot 

summer so far? I 

am being cooled 

down by my 

cooling collar and 

jacket. I felt so hot 

that I had to wear 

the jacket to cool 

me down quickly 

as I was becoming 

uncomfortable with 

the heat. I wear my 

cooling collar most of the 

time and so does Alfie. We 

are so pleased with our collars 

as it has really helped to keep 

our bodies cool. Plus we have a cooling 

mat. I also have another collar to help my 

rheumatism. It is a magnetic collar and I do 

not have any aches in my legs now. 

Bentley won’t have anything around his 

neck. Even a collar he just lies down and will 

not move he stays in the shade all day and 

has a daily long swim. However, he has felt 

the heat this summer. At first he wasn’t keen 

on wearing a collar so he has had a haircut 

and uses his cooling mat but enjoys a swim. 

Whereas as you can see from the photo Alife 

this year has ventured to put his paws into 

the pool. He doesn’t like a swimming pool 

but wanted to try and get his toy out of the 

water so he put his paws in. 

Lila and Fiona two gorgeous female kittens 7 months 

old are looking for a home. They are very well 

socialised domesticated cats used to children.

bark when I see a tap

am scared of water. Bentley 

after his swim does enjoy 

jumping onto the sunbeds and rolling 

around until he is dry. So all the towels go 

everywhere but Bentley isn’t bothered he 

carries on regardless. I trot off, as I think he is 

being silly. 

I do hope all my furry friends take note of 

what I am saying “You Must Drink A Lot of 

Water” so you do not dehydrate and try and 

stay out of the mid-day sun.

Clarence Birdseye: 

The Captain of Cold 

FROZEN FOOD 

In 1944, W.L. Maxson Co. created the first 

frozen dinner called “Strato-Plates,” 

which it sold to the Navy and airlines. The 

meals consisted of three basic dishes — meat, 

vegetables and a potato — on a paperboard 

tray treated with Bakelite resin. 

However from 1912 to 1926, Clarence 

Birdseye worked alongside the Inuit in 

Newfoundland, Canada, as a fur trapper. 

During this time, Birdseye noticed something 

that would revolutionise the world of frozen 

food and give rise to a modern industry 

expected to be worth $156.4 billion by 2020. 

The fish caught by the Inuit fishermen would 

freeze almost immediately when pulled from 

the water in the sub-zero winter conditions. 

Birdseye noted that the fish retained its flavour 

and texture, even when it was defrosted 

months later. 

Fast-forward to 1920 and Birdseye is 

experimenting with frozen peas. He found 

that by blanching peas immediately after 

picking and then fast-freezing them resulted in 

a frozen pea which was eye-catchingly green. 

So it was that in 1929 Birdseye introduced 

his “fast freezing’ techniques” to the American 

consumer and the frozen food industry was 

born. 

During the 1940s, the volume of frozen foods 

available to consumers boomed. It wasn’t until 

the 1950s, though, that the first frozen ready 

meals hit the shelves in the United States. 

By the 1960s, so-called convenience food 

was all the rage and frozen ready meals 

mirrored the changes taking place in society, 

as more and more women left the traditional 

housewife role and moved in to the workplace. 

1970-80s: Home freezing and improved the 

choice. In the 1970s, home freezers became far 

more affordable and widespread as a result. 

This gave rise to improved choice in frozen 

foods (with oven chips and pizza hitting the 

market). What’s more, people could now 

enjoy a greater range of frozen desserts, with 

families no longer restricted to ice cream. 

1990s and beyond. With frozen foods now a 

regular part of almost every family’s weekly 

diet, the focus shifted to the nutrition of frozen 

food. 

Quality, nutrition and taste became the 

watch-words of the frozen food industry and 

since being established since 1991, the industry 

have learned a lot about making really good 

food.
