AFRICAN ENERGY STORIESGECF Unveils Plan to DeepenGas Development in AfricaBy Ndubuisi Micheal ObinemeAFREC, APPO, and the Africa Energy Chamber(AEC).While speaking about the recent developmentsin Africa’s gas industry, he highlighted that thereare more than 74 million mt/year of LNG exportcapacity to be approved in the Sub Saharanregion by 2030, provided that all the conditionsare met.Yury Sentyurin, Secretary-General of Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF)The Gas Exporting Countries Forum(GECF) has unveiled plans topromote gas development in theAfrican oil and gas industry to overcomeenergy poverty, enhance growth andmitigate CO2 emissions pollution in thecontinent.His Excellency Yury Sentyurin, Secretary-General of GECF, made this disclosurerecently in an exclusive interview with ourcorrespondent, as part of their efforts tofoster stronger cooperation with Africancountries.He explained that Africa dominates theGECF agenda and there are at least sixAfrican countries represented in the forumout of its nineteen member countries,accounting for more than 90% of Africa’sproven natural gas reserves.He noted that during his tenure since 2018,Angola has joined the Forum as a newmember and this confirms that Africaholds a strong footprint in the global gassector.He continued, “That same year, Africagained a new elevation in the world ofenergy at the Russia-Africa Summit, held inOctober 2019 in Sochi, Russia, and cohostedby Russian President Vladimir Putinand Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, with the attendance of 43 heads ofstate or government.“As the world is progressing to increase energyaccess and fulfil the UN SustainableDevelopment Goal (SDG) #7, to ensure accessto affordable, reliable, sustainable and modernenergy for all, there is still an estimated 548million people in sub-Saharan Africa, or 53% ofthe population without access to electricity,according to the United Nations. Further, nearly789 million Africans currently have no access toclean cooking.“This enthusiasm and belief in Africa’s energypotential are not unfounded or without merit.Projections from the latest available iteration ofthe GECF’s Global Gas Outlook 2050 show thatAfrica will witness the highest growth rate ofnatural gas among all regions of the world, atnearly 150% up to 2050.“Countries such as Senegal and Mauritania inAfrica stand on the precipice of the league ofgas exporters in the short-term, whileMozambique and Tanzania are expected tobecome natural gas exporters in the long-term.“The GECF’s first Annual Short-Term Gas MarketReport (2020) shows, Africa boasts a number ofpromising growth factors, such as in the area ofpower generation, in transport through naturalgas vehicles (NGVs), and investments.”In another development, Yury said that GECF isworking to foster stronger partnerships withother Africa-based organisations such asIn his words, “Mozambique alone took FID on3.3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2017followed by a further 13 mtpa in 2019. The firstproject is expected to be commissioned in 2022,and the second one will enable LNG flows fromMozambique to the world by 2024-25.“Newmarket players are rising with thediscovery of huge gas reserves in Tanzania,Gabon, Mauritania, Congo, Senegal, andCameroon that are likely to support anambitious gas master-plan for the domesticconsumption as well as LNG exports.“I believe our multi-faceted efforts are bearingfruit and this was evidenced at the last GECFMinisterial Meeting, held in November 2020.“The 22nd GECF Ministerial Meeting washosted (virtually) by Algeria and welcomed theparticipation of ministers and top authoritiesfrom several guest African countries whodelivered their key messages on the energysector and gas market in particular, includingfrom Mozambique, Tanzania, Tunisia, andSenegal.”The Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) is aninternational governmental organisation thatprovides the framework for exchangingexperience and information among MemberCountries.
