Fast forward 20 years and the level of

properties we now see regularly coming

through our operators are exceptional.

Client demands have always driven the

changes we see in the service sector,

and specifically in the luxury ski market,

where once en-suite facilities would have

been the primary selling point, it is now

hot tubs, pools, wine cellars, games room,

cinema rooms and yes, even bowling

alleys…

What has been unique amongst many of

the enquiries we have received from

clients for the 21/22 season, is not the

facility focus (though these remain

important) but rather the fundamental

nature of the property and their stay in

the resort. We are regularly seeing that

larger properties to accommodate more

friends and family (and to have more

Skiing has always presented a very unique

opportunity for all of us. As an activity it is

so uniquely and solely placed in high

mountains for short periods of the year

and for most of us can only be accessed

by travelling to it. Certainly for those

based in the UK, a luxury escape to the

slopes is not something which can be

achieved easily as a ‘stay-cation’ which

has been a key driver for forward bookings

and reservations for those “must have”

mountain escapes this winter.

Whatever we may see in the next few

years, it’s fair to say that we have always

had to embrace change and development

(good and bad) in the ski and travel

industry, but one thing is for certain, the

demand and anticipation for this winter is

palpable and we can not wait to get

started.

Market Trends

1

A Focus on Friends and Family

With so many having sacrificed time with family and

friends over the past 18 months, many are looking to

re-connect. Along with this core trend is an increased

awareness of ‘space’, which has seen many clients

looking for both larger chalets to accommodate a larger

group, but also a broader range of facilities (such as pools,

hammams, massage rooms etc.), larger dining areas and

communal spaces—with less focus on the local après scene—

making the chalet itself the true holiday hub.

2

A New Way of Working

One of the most talked about changes to most of

our daily lives as a result of the pandemic is the

change in our working styles. With ubiquitous

adoption of remote technology and for many a

continued “work-from-home” scenario, we are

increasingly receiving request for extended and season long

stays in properties which have office or desk space. With 86% of

the largest UK companies saying they will not return to fulltime

office work, this is not a trend unique to our clients, as we

also hear of resorts announcing co-working spaces close to the

pistes, making the dream work-life balance a reality for many...

3

Off-Peak

Market Trends

is On-Trend

There’s no denying that the anticipation for next

winter has grown more than any season we’ve

seen before, and with good cause - we’ve all

waited too long to hit the slopes. This has however

had a knock on effect for availability which some

operators tell us has resulted in a 40% increase in forward

bookings over previous years. All of that has meant

off-peak weeks are looking more attractive than ever.

Whether you're inspired by the thought of festive skiing the

week before Christmas (often still part of the school holidays),

blowing away the January blues with a post-New Year escape

or indulging in the prime conditions offered during the week

before February half-term (the quietest week of the season - a

real gem), these weeks offer incredible value and quieter slopes

for those not bound by school holidays.

Inspired?

We’ve hand picked some great properties to reflect these trends, so

whether you’re looking to escape with family, work from the

mountains or take advantage of those off-peak weeks—read on...

Variants and video calls with

the mic on mute… Whether we

have liked it or not, we have all

had to adapt to new ways of going about

our daily lives in the past year, and travel

is likely to be no different.

Head of Sales, Ski Chalets

“...everyone will be doing

everything they can to

make travel safe and

enjoyable - too many rely

on tourism to take undue

risks.”

Chalet Bacchus - Courchevel Moriond 1650, France

Before we get into what we expect to see

in the coming months and year, let’s get

one thing clear, everyone will be doing

everything they can to make travel safe

and enjoyable, too many people, towns

and economies rely on tourism to take

undue risks. With tourism being such a

significant economy for countries around

the world, we should feel safe that

precautions are in place to help, not to

hinder, our experiences. At the start of

2021 we were lucky to be able to help

non-UK clients escape to the pistes in

Switzerland and enjoy what was

ultimately considered a predominantly

normal holiday. As skiers, we’re lucky; for

the most part we are outside, wrapped

up (usually with a face-covering to keep

warm) and enjoying our time with a close

group of friends with no need to intermingle,

thus reducing the risks of

transmission and the knock-on effects

which that brings with it. Of course, the

impacts for most people are less likely to

exist on the pistes, and are more likely to

be seen during the travel phase itself.

“Travel has always fed

our desire for discovery

and experiences, two

things which have been

distinctly lacking over

the past 18 months.”

We have already seen entry restrictions

change to adapt to shifts in infection rates

and variant dominance, but as we

approach winter, with mass vaccination

proving to be a global success, we expect

this hurdle to be significantly reduced, and

possibly even just a distant memory.

Air travel is likely to maintain restrictions

longer than any other element of travel.

The confined spaces and close proximity

are clearly going to be a concern for some

time, and with good cause. Perhaps in-turn

this will be a driver (no pun intended) for

people to consider taking their own car to

The Alps this winter, we will have to see.

What is clear though is that airlines are

setting their winter schedules in the

expectations - and hope - that travel

corridors will be eased and international

travel can resume, albeit with

consideration to the previously mentioned

precautions.

Of all the resorts usually operating over the

European winter, Switzerland was the only

one to continue with what could be

considered ‘normal’ operations. In

discussions earlier this year with Alex

Herrmann, Director UK & Ireland at

Switzerland Tourism, it became clear that

whilst quieter than usual, those whom were

able to get to the slopes were having a

wonderful time, even with restrictions in

place, such as reduced capacity on lifts,

sanitiser stations in queues, table capacity

limits in restaurant, social distancing and

mandatory face-coverings. Whilst many will

have considered this a desperate act to

generate revenue for the resorts, this

actually proved an invaluable exercise for

the industry. It was very clear that with the

right infrastructure and guidance, there is

no reason that mountain sports cannot

operate under near normal conditions.

Whilst we cannot at this stage guarantee

anything (and no one can) we are excited

and confident for the coming season. We

accept that air travel may present a few

hoops to jump through, but so long as we

remember that these measures are there to

help us all, they are easily overcome and

dealt with.

With forward bookings already strong, it

seems that the lure of the mountains is a

greater force than the trepidation of travel

in a post pandemic world.

In-Resort

W ith so much time and

big projects and make

changes during the

‘down time’ of the pandemic, resorts

have some surprises in-store for those

heading away this winter. From new

infrastructure to exciting new

experiences, there’s no stopping the

continual progression which makes the

world’s leading ski resorts so appealing.

Majestic Views in Morzine

An impressive new viewing platform above the

famous French ski resort of Morzine will be

opening this winter.

The 10-metre-long walkway boasts a glass

floor and has been installed at the summit of

nearby Pointe de Nyon,.

The platform is free to access for those brave

enough to tackle it.

A Lift for Verbier

After 37 years of dedicated service, the

Médran 1 lift has taken a well-deserved

retirement. A brand-new installation will be

built throughout this year, ready to welcome

you in winter 2021–2022.

The new lift will have large 10-seater cabins,

the largest currently available for this type of

lift.. The extra space and speed of the lift will

mean uplift capacity will reach 3,200 people

per hour, compared to 1,800 today.

Oxygene X Haglöfs

A Walk in the Treetops

Oxygene, the leading providers of ski schools

and guides across The Alps has teamed up

with uniform sponsor, Haglöfs to open a

clothing store in Courchevel 1850.

So once your lesson is over, why not relax with

some retail therapy with two of the top

brands in the industry.

Located in the Forum shopping centre in

Coourchevel 1850

From summer 2021, the world's longest

treetop walk will connect the two villages of

Laax Murschetg and Laax Dorf. Once you have

reached platform height via one of the two

access towers, the 1.5-kilometer-long walkway

leads you through the forest - always at eye

level with the trees. With a slide for the little

ones, four platforms with seating along the

way and a unique view of the surrounding

landscape, the treetop walk offers a unique

nature experience for the whole family.

Meribel Piste Makeover

One of the marvels in Méribel’s Altiport sector

is the Piste des Animaux, an easy, enjoyable

route through the heart of a protected forest.

After a few years of good, loyal service, the run

is getting a makeover with the same goal as

ever: to delight children.

Chalet & Apartment Specialist

We’re here to help dispel any myths or misconceptions about whether

you should be looking for a luxury chalet for a celebration or a chic and

One of the topics of conversation we have many times per week with clients (and with good reason) is that

around which accommodation type is actually right for them. Whilst many may have an idea in their minds

about what they would ideally like, the unique nuances in the style of accommodation and the impact of those

differences can have on a stay in the mountains can be make or break to ensuring everyone has an amazing

holiday...

Luxury Catered Chalets

The very heart of our portfolio,

our luxury catered chalets

Take everything you

catering. OK, it’s not quite

that clean cut, but essentially

that is the fundamental

change. You may often find

that a self-catered option

also includes fewer services,

such as a driver service or

daily cleaning/turnover. Of

course, what this does give

you is more autonomy and

more freedom to make your own decisions about your days ’on the go’. So if you suddenly have a

craving for an evening eating in town, you can make it at a moment’s notice without any impact to

anyone else.

Delivering “luxury” at a very similar level to the catered experience, you can still expect to have options

on what facilities you would like to have at your disposal, including hot tubs, saunas, ski-rooms and

pools.

We have seen an increase in this type of accommodation as clients look to control their environments

and have the privacy afforded by the self-contained, self-catering experience.

Apartments/Penthouses

Travelling in a smaller group? Luxury apartments

give you the option to take-over a dedicated

space just for you, without the scale of a luxury

chalet. Often located as single floors within a

chalet or as dedicated floors/areas of hotels, you

also benefit from the shared services and

amenities of the whole property including pools,

hot tubs, spas and restaurants...

The Evolving World of

Eco-Conscious Travel

Rupert Longsdon

Founder and CEO

I

t would be easy to focus on all the

negatives which have stemmed

from the pandemic (and yes of

course there are many) however,

one surprising but fortunate outcome has

been the significant shift in awareness

and action towards the environment and

our attitude to driving positive change.

Whether it is those whom live in cities

noticing dramatically reduced levels of air

pollution or those simple escaping cities

and spending more time enjoying the

countryside, this is a shared concern on a

more pro-active footing than ever before.

Over recent years, we have been involved

in an increasing number of discussions

both internally and externally regarding

the impact of travel on the environment,

and quite rightly so. The luxury sector

(not just that of travel) has always been in

the spotlight of social responsibility and

has often lacked pro-active change to

contribute to a better eco-future.

However, travel has always come with the

added pressure of air travel. The truth of

the matter is that flying has a significant

impact on the environment compared to

other modes of transport, but the

accessibility and capability of air travel is

also the support mechanism for

communities around the world to sustain

economies, provide jobs and underpin

entire global industries for tourism. The

answer therefore is not to stop travelling

by air, instead we must learn to adapt

how we travel and how we stay in our

destinations. It is only by continuing to

support these industries and economies

that progress can be made for a brighter

future for everyone.

We are already seeing exciting projects

coming from airline manufacturers which

are pushing the boundaries of electric

turbine and jet power. Airbus, for example,

has launched three concepts - named

ZEROe - to become the world’s first zeroemission

aircraft by 2035.

Closer to home, we are also excited to

see many ski resorts and chalets playing

their part in the challenge. Pioneered in

2010, Whistler has been providing

electricity for the entire winter and

summer operation via the Fitzsimmons

Creek hydro project, more recently others

have taken action too, with investment

into key projects being developed in

Zermatt, Saas Fee, Avoriaz, Laax and many

“The answer is not to

stop travelling, instead

we must adapt how we

travel and how we stay

in our destinations”

What this all points to is a shared

objective not to restrict travel, but to

make it work more effectively for future

generations.

24

25

The Evolving World of Eco-Conscious Travel

Over the past 18 months, we’ve not only

been looking at the responsibility of others

to make changes, we have looked inwards

too. Having reduced the carbon impact of

our operations in the UK by encouraging

recycling, removal of waste bins and

reduced employee car commutes we have

also looked at proactively supporting our

clients. It has been accepted for a long

time that airlines would allow and

encourage you to offset your flights with

carbon credits, but there has been little

responsibility take beyond the ’flight’

element within the travel industry to

account for the holiday itself; the time in

the hotel or chalet, the transfers,

essentially all the “in-resort” activity. This

is where we are trying to play our part, by

offering complimentary carbon offsetting

on all bookings made through Oxford Ski

Company, to cover all these elements. We

can not re-invent travel overnight, but we

can play our role in acting responsibly,

encouraging others to do the same and

always looking to improve; which is all

anyone can do...

We appreciate that there is a stigma that

carbon offsetting is an “easy way out” and

is merely a global tree planting project, but

this is simply not the case. By working

closely with ClimateCare we have been able

to get under-the-skin of how offset

donations are invested into global initiatives

which have shown profound and immediate

benefits on human welfare and the

environment around the world and on our

doorstep.

Alongside our strategic partnerships with

Protect Our Winters (POW), ClimateCare

and EcoSki, we have worked to create a

responsible infrastructure to ensure that

when people are travelling with us, they are

doing so conscientiously, aware of the role

they play and with a constant eye on a

better future, protecting our playgrounds

for generations to come.

“We can not re-invent travel

others to do the same and always

it is an experience to behold.

ith almost two whole seasons having passed, chalet owners and

hotel operators have been hard at work developing their

portfolios and refreshing key properties, at the same time that

client priorities have shifted, illustrated by the afore mentioned

recent booking trends.

Chalet Grande Corniche is one of those properties that

goes beyond ticking the boxes of facilities and service, it

has a real personality and for me, there is no other

property like it. Perched high above the quaint village of

Les Gets, the morning mist tends to sit low in the valley,

creating a fluffy lake that slowly burns off as dawn breaks

Chalet Bacchus

Courchevel Moriond (1650), France — Sleeps 14

From the moment you enter the front door you can feel

the love and attention to detail that has gone into the

design of this property. Traditional materials of wood and

stone are found throughout the chalet and the original

foundations can still be seen showing the owners

dedication to preserving the history of the chalet.

As we have seen over our 20 years in the industry, each luxury property which

comes onto the market sets a new standard for the industry, pushing boundaries

on design, form and function, delivering the most impressive and defining

experiences for clients. The recently completed and launched Chalet Bacchus is a

prime example of this. Taking a modern view on traditional alpine style, Chalet

Bacchus offers large open spaces, vaulted ceilings and tranquil secluded pool and

spa area, making this self-contained mecca a destination worthy of a pilgrimage in

itself.

Looking ahead to this season, with free reign, the team here have picked out their

showcase property, both existing and new, to give you the inside scoop on where

to head this

winter...

We are so excited to introduce Chalet Bacchus to our

portfolio for this coming winter season, setting a new

benchmark in this increasingly popular resort. A stunning

seven bedroom chalet boasting Ski-in/Ski-out access to

the Belverde piste, just a matter of seconds from the

centre of bustling Courchevel 1650. Named after the

Roman god of wine, Chalet Bacchus has an appropriately

well-stocked wine cellar to live up to the credentials.

When not indulging, this true luxury ski chalet has a very

well equipped spa area with a 10m swimming pool,

massage room, and indoor hot tub - what more could you

ask for? This is a very exciting new addition and we can

not wait to visit in person as soon as we are able to.

Senior Chalet Specialist

It is no secret that some of the world’s finest chalets are

located in Verbier and among the big players lies the

more modest yet equally exceptional La Vigne. One of

the most impressive aspects of this private residence

which is built into the mountain side, is the incredible

view of Verbier and the flowing valley beyond, and as I

entered the chalet for the very first time, it felt like I was

coming home. Beautiful interiors and the luxury facilities

you would expect from a property such as this include

private spa, cinema room, indoor pool and outdoor hot

tub, which ensure La Vigne rightfully takes its place as

one of Verbier’s top residences.

Karen Cabena

Head of Sales, Hotels & North America

Hotel K2 Le Chogori is the newest in the portfolio of

fantastic hotels created by Le K2. This 5* offering is just

as exceptional as its sister-properties and is complete

with a large variety of rooms to suit all occasions. The

interior finish of the property is very contemporary, yet

subtle and sophisticated. It features a spa, sauna, jacuzzi

and hammam in addition to a 12m indoor swimming

pool.

You would struggle to find a more centrally located hotel

in Val d’Isere, with Le K2 Chogori being positioned on the

main high street, providing excellent access to shops,

restaurants and ski lifts alike.

Hotel Rosa Alpina

San Cassiano, Italy

Sarah Roberts

Head of Sales, Chalets

After careful consideration, if I could stay anywhere in

the alps, I’d pick Tivoli Lodge, and here are a few reasons

why.

It is elegant and sophisticated yet offers that home from

home feel; as a privately owned and run chalet the

service is exceptional and for a food lover like me, having

an experienced chef (and sous chef) on hand to whip up

guests’ every request makes a holiday complete.

Beyond the fabulous service, beautiful décor and

mountain views, access to the extensive ski area is easy

from Tivoli Lodge. Believe it or not the chalet has ski in/

ski out access - hallelujah!

Tivoli Lodge has a lavish spa area, sauna, private

cinema……I could go on and on, however it’s the

children’s playroom that gives this chalet a unique edge.

As a mother, I don’t think my son would love anything

more than spending hours (after skiing) playing in his

own private soft-play!

Dan Symons

Hotel & North America Specialist

Hotel Rosa Alpina is a stunning property set in San

Cassiano at the heart of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World

Heritage site renowned for its beauty. The hotel itself

combines contemporary design with Tyrolian comfort,

fantastic service and outstanding food thanks to its

on-site 3 Michelin-star restaurant, St Hubertus. Rosa

Alpina is ideally located to access the famous Sella Ronda

Ski Circuit which allows you to explore 5 different resorts

in one day, using skiing as your only mode of transport.

The hotel has recently become part of the Aman

Collection, building upon its success including properties

such as Le Melezin in Courchevel 1850 and many others.

Beyond Europe’s Borders

Beyond Europe’s Borders

M

ention skiing in a group

of friends, family (or

even strangers) and

inevitably the

discussion will trend towards key topics

of conversation; “how old were you

when you started?”, “when did you last

go?” (currently a sore point for all of us)

and more commonly “where do you go?”

or “what’s your favourite resort?”. The

truth of the matter is that with The Alps

on our doorstep we are spoilt for choice

with resorts and offerings. However,

when you find someone who has

explored beyond Europe’s borders, you

get a sense that they have been

somewhere special, on an adventure

and experienced something so much

more than simply a ski holiday. The

further we travel, the more diverse

culture develops and the more unique

the world becomes, which brings great

rewards for those willing to look beyond

Winter Escapes in North America, Japan and Beyond

The Alps.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of

skiing Europe pistes and its convenience

is a huge draw, but if you’re looking for

something a little special this year or

planning for a future trip with a twist, the

world is your oyster.

With a wealth of personal experience

under their collective belts (or should that

be helmets) the team here have pooled

their experiences, dreams and everything

in-between for those looking to get

further away…

North America & Canada

With high alpine gladed skiing, pristine

slopes and 5-star accommodation,

North America and Canada play host to

some of the most varied, challenging

and welcoming resorts in the world.

When it come to infrastructure,

organisation and service, there’s

nowhere quite like North America and

Canada. With a culture of exemplary

service across the board, you can be

sure that you will be well looked after.

Out on the slopes, on-piste marshals,

“North America and

Canada play host to

some of the most varied,

challenging and

welcoming resorts in

the world”

guest services and lift-top guides mean

that you are never far from a helping

hand for advice or assistance. Then

there’s the skiing itself; broad open

pistes often 50 meters wide gives

everyone their ‘space’ to enjoy, and

whereas European off-piste is “at your

own risk”, in the US and Canada, these

areas are actually part of the resort,

making it more of an adventure than

stepping into the unknown - so if you’re

looking to develop your skills but within

a more controlled environment, this

could be just for you. Getting around the

ski areas is also more fluid than in

Europe, with orderly queuing and

systematic lift loading, meaning wait

times are shorter (for the most part)

and rides are more efficient—meaning

you get more laps to earn those end of

day drinks.

Japan

Everything you have heard about the

snow quality in Japan is true. It’s dry,

waist deep, sometimes even neck deep

and completely dependable. Scientists

call it ‘ocean-effect snow’, as frigid air

blows in from the frozen plains of Siberia

it sucks up moisture from the Sea of

Japan and then dumps the load on the

first land mass it comes to. The result?

“Vast quantities of the

lightest and fluffiest

powder snow known to

humankind”

Vast quantities of the lightest and

fluffiest powder snow known to

humankind. But this is only one of the

many reasons that Japan should be on

your bucket list. Steeped in history, an

escape to this East Asian treasure

delivers experiences well beyond the

slopes. A ski holiday to Japan would not

be complete without spending time

exploring the rest of the country. Spend

a few days in Tokyo before flying home

or discover the Shinto temples, onsens,

geishas, snow monkeys, sumo wrestlers

and bullet-trains.

Out of this World Heliskiing

Arguably one of the definitive experiences

for skiers the world-over, heliskiing puts

you at the heart of the experience for

exhilarating and unparalleled skiing as you

float through untracked powder

surrounded only by your friends and family.

“No lift pass needed, step

on-board for take-off.”

Based out of dedicated accommodation,

heliskiing is the ultimate escape from the

real-world, sinking in powder during the

day and sipping cocktails in the evening.

Whether you’re keen to discover the snow

capped peaks of South America or the

expansive mountain ranges of British

Colombia, the only limit on what is possible

is your imagination. No lift pass needed,

step on-board for take-off

Beyond the Slopes

There's so much more to winter escapes

than simply skiing, this magical time of year

affords so many great experiences beyond

the slopes. They say nothing great comes

from following the heard, and whilst we

might debate the true legitimacy of that, we

certainly appreciate that life defining

experiences are usually, unusual.

Whether you’re dreaming of drifting through

...we certainly appreciate

a helicopter on-hand, an escape to Lapland

in the lap of luxury at the world-renowned

Octola Lodge, a remote adventure to

covered.

Our tailored approach to these unique
