In this program, there are many names. Of the inventive creative team and
quadruple-threat actors; of the amazing Mariachi Amistad de Arkansas; of the
hundreds of community members who went above and beyond their ticket price
to make tonight possible.
And then, there are the names of the TheatreSquared team. These are the
builders, the videographers, the stitchers; the friendly voice on the other end of
the line; the hard-working grant writer, funding an artist’s residency; the custodian
making every surface shine; the pastry chef tasting a decadent filling; the writer,
the math whiz, the teaching artist; the electrician running a cable to light up the
stage. And more.
What a privilege it is to know and work with each of you and to be part of this
community together. We’re glad you’re here — enjoy the show!
José Cruz González is one of the most prolific
playwrights writing for the American stage.
Besides American Mariachi, his plays include

MARIACHI AMISTAD
DE ARKANSAS
has been in existence for over 21 years. They
serve the Northwest Arkansas area in events
such as weddings, Quinceañeras, backyard
parties and formal on-stage performances.
The band consists of the traditional
instrumentation of trumpet, violins, guitar,
vihuela and guitarrón. It is a 10-piece group
filled with a great vocal and musical presence.
The band consists of Ruben Perez and his wife,
his brother-in-law and his two children, along
with friends they have met along the way.

GABRIEL AREVALO (Guitar)
makes his TheatreSquared debut.
A Northwest Arkansas native, he
began his musical career at the age
of 12 with Mariachi Amistad. He has
played with mariachi now for over 5
years. He often plays the vihuela or
the guitar aside from the trumpet.
He enjoys playing for venues such
as weddings, quiceaneras and
parties to bring joy and laughter
to the audience. He is currently in
his senior year in Springdale High
School and plays the trumpet in the
band.

René) returns to TheatreSquared
after appearances in My Father’s
War, Shakespeare in Love and
Teen Dad (ANPF19). Professional

Best Supporting Actor); Edmund
in King Lear; Orlando in AYLI,
Berowne in Loves Labours Lost

SARA ORNELAS (Hortensia/Boli)

She recently appeared as Maria in

Repertory Theatre). Her credits

Studio); Frida Kahlo in A Ribbon
About A Bomb (Exquisite Corpse
Company); and Red in Late: A
Cowboy Song (Mildred’s Umbrella).
She holds a B.F.A. in theater from the
University of Houston.
JACOB PEREZ (Vihuela) makes his
TheatreSquared debut. Born and
raised in Northwest Arkansas, he
has had a love for music for most
of his life. He didn’t start playing
music until he was 13 years old
when he joined Mariachi Amistad
as the guitarron player. Once he
experienced playing with his friends
and family for people who loved
the music, he was hooked. He
decided he wanted to learn more
instruments and when he landed
on the vihuela, he knew that it was
his favorite. He was lucky enough
to be a part of the marching band
and jazz band at Bentonville West
High School. He graduated from
Bentonville West High School in
2019. If he’s not playing music he’s
on the disc golf course.
SOPHIA PEREZ (Violin) makes
her TheatreSquared debut. She
has been with Mariachi Amistad
since she was 9 years old. She
began this experience playing the
vihuela and moved to the violin
when she turned 12. She enjoys
playing other instruments that she
learned as a young girl like piano,
ukulele, guitar, and vihuela. She is
a senior at Bentonville West High
School and plans to pursue her
dream of music after graduation.
She especially loves to sing and
write her own music during her own
time. She enjoys performing, not

only with music, but she was also
in a competitive marching band on
the color guard team. She had the
opportunity to perform in New York
and various state competitions.
YEYRY PEREZ (Tia Carmen) makes
her theatrical and TheatreSquared
debut in American Mariachi as Tia
Carmen. New to theatre, she is
excited to contribute both as an
actor and with the violin. She has
six years' experience playing in
Mariachi Amistad for many weddings,
birthdays, and special events
including at Crystal Bridges Museum
of American Art. She also has more
than 15 years experience singing.
AMANDA ROBLES (Isabel) makes
her TheatreSquared debut. She
has appeared Off-Broadway as
Carlita in Food Fighters (Theater
Barn and Out of the Box Theatrics).
Other credits include Carla in In
the Heights (Westport Country
Playhouse); Aldonza in Man of
La Mancha (Stages St. Louis);
Cinderella in Into the Woods
(Barrington Stage Company); and
was in the original production of
American Mariachi at the Denver
Center and the Old Globe Theater.
She holds a B.F.A. in musical theater
from the University of the Arts.
JERRY SOTO (Mino/Padre Flores)
makes his TheatreSquared debut.
Off-Broadway credits include his
work as an ensemble member with
Teatro Circulo (Don Juan, ATI Best
Actor, in The Playboy of Seville) and
Repertorio Español (Pancho, ACE
Best Supporting, in En el Nombre
de Salomé). He was also the Male
Swing for The Barbershop at New
World Stages in NYC. National
credits include: Don Rodrigo in The
Knight from Olmedo (GALA Theatre,
Washington, DC). Film credits
include: the role of Ñico Torres on
Che: Part One directed by Steven
Soderbergh. TV credits include an
11-year tenure as a Spanish announcer
and host with WWE, including
announcing at WrestleMania 35.
He holds a B.A. in drama from the
University of Puerto Rico and he has
trained and been on stage in Puerto
Rico, Peru and Ecuador.
REBECCA RIVAS (Director) is
the Program Director of the
LatinX Theatre Project, an Artistic
Associate for TheatreSquared,
as well as a director and actor.
Most recently, she directed T2’s
production of Native Gardens, and
collaborated with LatinX Theatre
Project to develop and devise
staging for its play The Crossroads.
She has previously appeared in T2’s
The Ding Dong (Or the How the
French Kiss) as Mme. Pontegnac/
Fabiola/Mandy/French Maid;
Reasons to be Pretty as Carly; and in
a wide array of roles in the Arkansas
New Play Festival. Before moving
to Northwest Arkansas, she was an
assistant professor at the University
of Texas at El Paso, where she
directed a number of productions
including Bless Me, Ultima, House
on Mango Street, Electricidad and
Esperanza Rising, and was the
co-founder of El Paso's Chican@/
Latinx Theatre Series. She holds an
M.F.A. in acting from the University
of Arkansas.
JASON BURROW (Music Director)
returns to TheatreSquared having
previously worked as music
director on Matilda: The Musical,
Murder for Two, Shakespeare in
Love, Legend of Georgia McBride,
Once, Fun Home, Peter and the
Starcatcher, and Next to Normal.
He is an associate professor of
musical theatre at the University of
Arkansas and has performed as a
pianist and vocalist in venues such
as Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher
Hall, sang backup for Sting on the
68th Annual Tony Awards on CBS,
and in the Broadway Inspirational
Voices singing with Mariah Carey
in her 2014 Christmas concerts. He
taught in NYU's Tisch School of the
Arts in the New Studio on Broadway
before returning to Arkansas, his
home state. He holds a Bachelor
of Music Education degree from
the University of Arkansas and
Master of Music degrees from Ohio
University.
RUBEN PEREZ (Music Director
& Mariachi Band Leader) has a
musical career spanning over 36
years. He plays every instrument
in the mariachi and helps teach
new members as well. He has been
awarded multiple vocal awards and
contests in the San Antonio area
and had the privilege of studying
under the direct mentorship of
Mariachi Vargas. Ruben and his
wife run multiple businesses in the
Northwest Arkansas area including
the Mariachi Amistad de Arkansas.
TANYA ORELLANA (Scenic
Designer) returns to TheatreSquared
having previously designed Native
Gardens. Design credits include
The Heath (Merrimack Repertory
Theatre); Don’t Eat The Mangos
(Magic Theatre); On Your Feet!
(Aurora Theatre); Angels in America
(Mexico Premiere—Teatro Juan
Luis de Alarcón); Sweet Land (The
Industry New Work Opera); Lady
Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill
(Garry Marshall Theatre); and Dry
Powder (Aurora Theatre Company).
She is a member of Wingspace
Theatrical Design, La Gente: The
Latinx Theatre Design Network and
a graduate of the Calarts Scenic
Design Program.
HAYDEE ZELIDETH (Costume
Designer) makes her
TheatreSquared debut. She
believes clothes are a powerful
tool of one’s own personal
statement. In their own way they
carry on public conversations
with others and they tell stories
about who we are, who we are
not, and who we wish to be. They
are a means of exploring how to
manipulate our perception of the
human body and mind, which is the
kind of work that intrigues her. She
is a Mexican-American that grew up
on both sides of the border. These
experiences inform her point of view
and her approach to her work as a
storyteller, giving depth, dimension,
and color to the specificities of
someone’s life. Salud, paz, y amor.
NITA MENDOZA (Lighting Designer)
makes her TheatreSquared debut.
A Los Angeles-based lighting
designer, in recent years, she has
been on the lighting team for
Murder For Two (Lesher Center for
the Arts); Ladies (Boston Court
Theatre); and American Mariachi
(South Coast Repertory).
MICHAEL COSTAGLIOLA
(Sound Designer) makes his
TheatreSquared debut. His
credits include The Siblings Play
(Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre);
And Then They Came for Me
(Alabama Shakespeare Festival);
KISS (Yale Repertory Theatre);
Twelfth Night (Two River Theater);
Yermedea Raw (La MaMa ETC); and
tick, tick… BOOM! (Brown/Trinity
Repertory Theatre, Motif Magazine
Award for Best Sound Design). He
holds a B.A. in music from Brown
University and an M.F.A. in sound
design from the Yale School of
Drama.
BRODIE JASCH (Properties
Manager) is the resident props
master at TheatreSquared, where
his previous credits include
Shakespeare in Love, The Legend
of Georgia McBride, Every Brilliant
Thing, The Wolves, Miss Bennet:
Christmas at Pemberley, Vietgone,
Peter and the Starcatcher, Around
the World in 80 Days, and more
than 20 other productions. His

EMELY ZEPEDA (Production

Brooklyn, New York, where she

ANTHONY O. BULLOCK (Assistant
Stage Manager) returns to
TheatreSquared after stage
managing My Father’s War earlier
this summer. NYC credits include A
Nation Grooves (workshop) and The
Night Falls (workshop) with Project
Springboard: Developing Dance
Musicals. He is the Resident PSM for
Theater J in Washington, DC since
2019 including Jewish Queen Lear,
Actually and the Yiddish Theater
Lab. Other regional credits include
McCarter Theatre, Barrington Stage
Company, Williamstown Theatre
Festival, Studio Theatre in DC,
Signature Theatre in Arlington, Va.,
Baltimore Center Stage, Passage
Theatre, and Shakespeare & Co,
among others. He toured with The
White Snake by Mary Zimmerman
in association with The Goodman
Theatre, as part of The Wuzhen
Theatre Festival in Wuzhen,

CODA BOYCE (Production
Assistant) makes her
TheatreSquared debut. Credits
include Ghost of Christmas Present
in A Christmas Carol (Dallas Theatre
Center); Pat in Rights of Passage
(Four Walls Theatre). She obtained
her B.F.A. in theatre from Southern
Methodist University.
ROBERT FORD (Artistic Director)
is an award-winning playwright,
novelist & musician who helped
found TheatreSquared in 2005,
where he has co-produced 75 plays
and musicals and facilitated the
development of over 55 new works.
The current season features his play
My Father’s War, which premiered
at T2 in 2008. With Amy Herzberg,
he co-adapted two versions of
A Christmas Carol for T2. T2 has
produced several of his plays,
including Fault, The Spiritualist, The
Fall of the House (also Alabama
Shakespeare Festival—Edgar Award
nominee), Look Away, 'Twas the
Night, and adaptations of Great
Expectations and It's a Wonderful
Life. His critically acclaimed first
novel, The Student Conductor,
was a Barnes & Noble Discover
Great New Writers pick. He holds
a M.Mus. degree from Yale and
M.F.A.'s in acting from Rutgers and
in playwriting & screenwriting from
the Michener Center for Writers,
University of Texas at Austin.
MARTIN MILLER (Executive
Director/Producer) joined T2 in
2009, and has since produced more
than 100 plays and developmental
works, grown the theatre's annual
budget from $160,000 to $7MM,
and expanded its audience
twentyfold. He managed the design,
construction and fundraising for T2's
new 50,000-square-foot theatre
center. He established the National
Stages Program, a consortium
of producing theatres offering
reciprocal member benefits, and
has served as a panelist for the
National Endowment for the Arts
and Theatre Communications Group.
As associate producer for Chicago
Shakespeare Theater, he oversaw
a variety of projects including
commissioning the bilingual Romeo
y Juliet from Karen Zacarías, as well
as tours and transfers of works by
the Second City and Q Brothers. He
holds a B.A. from Carleton College
and M.F.A. in Arts Leadership from
The Theatre School, DePaul.
