The Office of Non-Credit and Continuing Education (ONCE) of Temple University is 

committed to providing quality, professional, and accessible education, along with 

lifelong learning and training opportunities. We want to empower adult learners, youth, 

businesses, and organizations to achieve their professional goals through personal 

enrichment learning experiences. Many of the non-credit courses scheduled for Fall 

2021 will continue to be held online, although we do have some courses that will be

semester, with a few courses returning to campus classrooms.

Taught by: Anne Hunter 

Storytelling is the basis of almost all writing. This workshop focuses on the craft of writing stories. 

We’ll study and write short stories to learn how to create compelling story lines and unforgettable 

characters. All genres welcomed: literary, mystery, fantasy, sci-fi, horror, romance, memoir, 

feature, or personal essay. Great for all levels, from beginners to experienced writers.

Learn exciting new ways to express yourself and develop your creativity through journaling. This 

course will help you discover how to use your journal to explore your thoughts, feelings, and 

values and support your emotional well-being in good times and through difficult changes.

LOOK-SEE ART: MODERN TO CONTEMPORARY (2 PARTS AVAILABLE) 

Taught by: Lynn Berkowitz 

Explore select examples of modern and contemporary art and their connections to previous 

works of art that inspired them. With a focus on painting, we will follow the thread between art 

of the recent and their link to the past to see how art continues to unfold. This participatory class 

includes active-looking strategies, enlivened with multimedia, that deepens appreciation for 

the presented image, the theories, and the context in which the art was made. Works of art will 

be drawn from museums near and far. NOTE: Register for both Part I and Part II at the time of 

registration, and pay a discounted fee of $149 for both courses, which represents a more than 

15% discount. You do not need take Part 1 in order to take Part 2.

This series includes an introduction to impressionism, postimpressionism, expressionism, and

PROGRAM NOTES: CLASSICAL MUSIC SERIES 

Taught by: David Heitler-Klevans 

Discover more about and prepare for local, upcoming symphony performances. Understanding 

and familiarity can greatly increase your enjoyment of this type of music. No previous musical 

background is required. David Heitler-Klevans has a degree in composition from Oberlin 

Conservatory of Music, and is a full-time performing musician. He has taught music to adults and 

children for over 30 years, including at Settlement Music School, Cheltenham Township Adult 

School, Mt. Airy Learning Tree, and Temple University Ambler. Series Fee: $135. Register for 

all three courses in the Program Notes: Classical Music Series at the time of registration, and 

receive a more than 15 percent discount on the total.

Learn about Mussorgsky’s opera Boris Godunov including biographical and historical context, 

story synopsis, structure, dramatic and musical highlights, and more. This opera will be shown as 

part of the MET in HD series in movie theaters on October 9.

READING BETWEEN THE WARS (BOOK DISCUSSION) 

Taught by: Miriam Camitta 

Join us in our discussion of five classic novels about the interwar period. Not just social history, 

there are stories, first, about the people living through the tumultuous years following the First 

World War. We begin with Elizabeth Jane Howard’s The Light Years, a family saga of class and 

desire at the beginning of Britain’s modern age. We continue with Heat and Dust, Ruth Prawer 

Jhabvala’s brilliant Pulitzer Prize winning novel of unforgettable characters caught in the fall of 

the British Empire in India. Next, we turn to the United States with Jazz, Toni Morrison’s story of 

a fatal love triangle set in the Harlem Renaissance. Returning to England, we follow with Mrs. 

Dalloway, Virginia Woolf’s modernist rendering of love, regret, and reckoning. We end with Ernest 

Hemingway’s Lost Generation classic, A Moveable Feast, a nostalgic look at Paris in the twenties 

and the hopefulness of youth.

GENEALOGY BASICS 

Learn to trace your family history and make it come alive. Learn about the genealogy research 

process and how to interpret the information you find. This course provides hands-on examples 

that help you dig deeper into your family’s past using several subscription-based websites that

SPANISH LEVEL I 

Taught by: Tania Pandolfo 

Spanish is the second most-used language in the United States and the most practical foreign 

language for Americans to learn. During this course, you will learn basic sentences, adjectives, 

vocabulary, conjugation, rules of the verbs ser and estar (to be), and the present form of the 

regular verbs. Students will also be exposed to different exercises and drills that will help them 

improve their communication skills. This course is ideal for beginners, those who have forgotten 

what they learned in school, businesspeople, or those seeking personal enrichment.

Prerequisite: Use and conjugation of “to be” verb (ser o estar) in present tense. Different drills

Prerequisite: Participants should have taken Spanish Level I and Spanish Level II, or have 

equivalent knowledge. Expand your Spanish language skills! As we continue to talk about culture, 

history, and current events, we will review the action verbs on the present, the regular, and the 

irregular forms. Students will also learn how to express “to know” in Spanish, reflexive actions, 

and the daily routines. Learn how to compare things, qualities, or actions and talk about actions in 

the recent past. Students who have already taken Spanish Level III can register for this course and 

receive advanced work from the instructor.

Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present moment. It reduces stress and 

anxiety, improves personal and professional relationships, contributes to improved productivity in

Unsure how to select a good wine? Turn the bottle around and check who imports it. This course 

focuses on the importers who represent top producers from around the world, wineries that craft 

a product embodying the best of their region, and grape variety. Join us for a tasting of these

TO OAK OR NOT TO OAK: WHAT’S THE FUSS ABOUT BARRELS AND WINE?* 

Taught by: Russell Schilder 

Aging wine in wood is an integral part of winemaking. We will discover how exposure to wood 

changes the character of the wine by smoothing out the tannins and adding layers of flavors and 

complexity. We will compare and contrast wines from the same grapes aged or not in oak barrels. 

Come learn, sample, and decide your favorite style! This class will be held outdoors at the Ambler

What changes are happening in the wine industry today? Discover more about low-intervention 

techniques such as a return to traditional methods that include no pesticides, fewer additives, and 

native yeasts for fermentation. Here’s a chance to try unique wine varietals from France, Spain, 

Greece, Austria, Georgia, and Herzegovina. Some are biodynamic, natural, organic, and sparkling, 

and some include unusual varietals virtually unknown and almost extinct. We look forward to 

sharing them with you.

Develop the basic skills of designing with flowers and foliage—fresh, dried, and silk. Learn how 

to make flowers last longer and become proficient in the selection of colors and flower types to 

coordinate with living spaces and entertainment needs. Supplies/materials fee is paid at the time

to hone their technical skills as the means to free their creative vision and establish their

This introductory course will teach you about digital photography, how to use your camera, and

how to edit your photos using simple photo-editing programs via live, on-screen demonstrations.

Expand your digital photography skills by learning to use more of your camera’s features. After 

a review of the basic settings for your camera, you’ll learn to control your camera to create great 

photographs as you learn about image stabilization, scene modes, and histograms. You will also 

learn how to avoid exposure problems, add mood to your photos, and use Aperture and Shutter 

Priority Modes. Participate in weekly shooting assignments and a discussion of the results in

to duplicate those settings to a whole bunch of photos in a couple of clicks.

Learn to optimize the use of your smart phone camera. Move beyond a quick snapshot to create

high dynamic range. Experiment with composition and editing to enhance your photograph and 

improve your image. You will need your smart phone (Apple or Android) and/or tablet.

CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER (CFP) CERTIFICATE PROGRAM 

Temple University and Kaplan Schweser, the leading provider of financial planning and education materials, offer the 

Certificate in Financial Planning (CFP) Program. This program meets the challenges faced by today’s financial planning 

professionals in the brokerage, insurance, accounting, banking, and related fields. The program fulfills the educational 

component, one of the four requirements of the CFP certification, established by the Certified Financial Planner Board of 

Standards, Inc. 

The next CFP program is scheduled to begin on September 10, 2021. All classes are scheduled to take place in person at 

the Temple University Center City (TUCC) campus. Classes meet every other weekend on Friday nights from 6 to 9:35PM 

and Saturdays from 8:45AM to 5PM. The fee for the entire nine-month certificate program is $5,500. Tuition does not 

include the cost of books and study materials.

Zoom overview 

Most of our courses that have scheduled meetings with instructors will meet via Zoom. You can access 

Zoom from your internet browser or by downloading the free app to your laptop, desktop, tablet, or 

smartphone. 

You’ll be sent the link for your class(es) once you’ve registered. 

For a successful online learning experience, make sure you have the following: 

• Video capability—If your computer/device does not have a built-in camera, then we recommend 

you purchase a webcam. 

• Headset/headphones 

• Access to the Zoom app on your computer/device—Zoom can be downloaded from its website 

or from your app store.

that we can now take registration payments by credit card over the phone. You can also mail a check, 

made payable to Temple University, and mail it to Temple University Ambler, Non-Credit Programs

Once you register for a course, you will be sent an email with a link to your course’s Zoom session. Be 

sure to hold onto that email, as you will need access to that link for each meeting of your course.
