COMMUNITY NEWS
Sing the UEFA
Euro 2020 anthem
Mellor Performing Arts School are excited
to reveal their involvement with the
brand-new anthem for this year’s UEFA
Euro 2020 tournament (rescheduled from
2020 due to Covid restrictions).
Fans will be delighted to hear the remake of the
rollicking football anthem ‘Vindaloo’; the track
made famous by Fat Les in 1998 during the FIFA
World Cup, with all proceeds going to the NHS.
The brainchild of Will Mellor, the song is
performed by a host of well-loved TV
personalities including Leigh Francis/Keith Lemon
(Celebrity Juice, Through The Keyhole, Shopping
with Keith Lemon), Danny Dyer (EastEnders, The
Wall, Real Football Factories), Paddy McGuiness
(Top Gear, Take Me out, Phoenix Nights), Bez and
Rowetta (Happy Mondays).
Twelve children from the celebrated Mellor
Performing Arts School in Burnham joined the
cast as dancers and singers, celebrating with
the rest of the gang during the official video for
the song. As a nod to the original track, the new
version was filmed at Hoxton Market in London
(where the original video was filmed over 23 years
ago) with a cameo appearance from Keith Allen
who wrote the original lyrics.
Recorded at the Metropolis Studios in Chiswick, the
recording and video also included members of the
NHS and The London Community Gospel Choir.
Children that were involved in the project were:
Gyaan Bharj, Amelia Brigdale, Josh Brigdale,
Charlotte Haward, Louie Holiday, Ria Joshi,
Autaum Letton, Ellen Liston, Jayden Mellor, Renee
Mellor, Jessica Smith and Willow Standing.
Get ready to hear the new anthem everywhere during
Euro20; taking place between 11th June and 11th
COMMUNITY NEWS
Waitrose
Beaconsfield
continue to embrace
the community
Meet Alison Lambert, the Community
Liaison Partner, at Waitrose Beaconsfield
who enjoys liaising with and helping
charities and good causes wherever
possible. She explains some of the
community initiatives that have taken
place over 2020 and this year.
The Community Matters scheme was revamped
as a result of Covid and along came ‘Give
A Little Love’. (GALL) At a time when acts of
kindness were truly valued, whether large or
small, over the Christmas period the GALL
scheme enabled the Partnership to support
both FareShare and Home-Start charities across
their network of shops - giving support to those
people who were increasingly reliant on these
charities - to an excess of £5M!
Cheque donations have also been donated
to organisations such as; Wycombe Food
Hub, One Can Trust, Better Connected
Beaconsfield, Beechview Academy and Young
Carers. The FareShare scheme is still continuing,
and they also deliver several bags of food to the
Home-Start Slough Little Starters Support Group,
biscuits to Rennie Grove Hospice Care nurses,
and Christmas gifts to some of the medical staff
at Wexham Park Hospital.
Alison says, ‘ I want to commend the phenomenal
effort made by Waitrose Partners and The
Christian Eye.’ One of our Partners, Alex, and
his charity, The Christian Eye, started taking
shopping orders from the most vulnerable, then
Alex and several other Waitrose Partners would
shop for the items, which would be delivered
to the customer. This service was maintained
through the year, and Alex still has a number of
regulars that he continues to help. During the
same period we also worked with both Better
Connected Beaconsfield and Beaconsfield Rotary
Club, again helping to get food to those people
unable to get out.
Summer fun singing
at Marlow & Chesham
United Football Grounds
Singing is SO good for our physical and mental
health & wellbeing, the benefits include:
• Reducing pain (singing releases endorphins,
the body’s natural pain killer)
• Reducing stress (singing has been proven to
lower cortisol levels)
• Lifting our mood, lowering blood pressure
• Promoting deep breathing (great for managing
anxiety or lung conditions)
• Improving immunity and posture
To capitalise on these benefits “Sing Your Pain
Away” have launched a series of outdoor happy
singing classes in covered grandstands! No
prior singing experience is needed. Choose
from: Mondays at 6pm at Marlow football club
and Wednesdays at 3pm at Chesham United
football club.
Prices from £8/session. Pre-booking is
Unleash children’s sense of adventure this
summer at Camp Beaumont
Camp Beaumont, the UK’s most experienced day camp provider, is excited to
announce the opening of two new sites in Buckinghamshire for summer 2021.
Green Park Activity Centre on Stablebridge
Road in Aston Clinton and Beaconsfield High
School on Wattleton Road in Beaconsfield will
both open their doors to campers for a range
of fun-filled activities and adventures in July
and August.
Located in the Heart of Chiltern on a former
Rothschild Estate, Green Park Activity Centre
presents an awe inspiring 80-acres of rolling
parkland and mature woodland for campers to
enjoy. Outdoor adventures are made for this
site, and campers will have the chance to
take part in a range of fun activities such
as climbing, abseiling and zip wire, archery,
trebuchet and a host of team challenges.
There is a wonderful drama studio and art
room which will act as a perfect location for
all of Camp Beaumont’s creative crafts and
performing arts activities, meaning there really
is something for everyone.
Beaconsfield High School is also a fantastic
site packed with exceptional sports facilities From action-packed high-wire activities
including an Astroturf court, sports hall, tennis that allow children to explore their sense of
courts and spacious sports fields for lots of adventure, through to artistic pursuits hosted
fun-filled games and activities.
in the impressive classrooms – there is never a
dull moment at the camps...
connected, get active, relax and unwind, and
express yourself.
And while giving kids the opportunity to have
fun alongside developing skillsets in social
interaction, leadership and getting them
active, parents can feel confident that their
kids are enjoying themselves while learning.
After the challenges of the last year, the
opening of the new camps comes just in
time for children to finally have some fun
with their friends.
In fact, a recent study revealed three quarters
of children said they are most looking forward
to playing with their friends (74%) and going
on adventures (72%) this summer.
The activities on offer help to build confidence
and give children a sense of pride in their
abilities. It’s not every day that they get the
chance to tackle the high wires, have the
chance to use a trebuchet, or get involved
with archery.
The Camps are not only fun for children, but
they help to reduce stress levels, and improve
vital life skills such as teamwork, leadership,
confidence and resilience. Engaging in fun
activities with their peers helps children truly
discover their full potential.
While children are able to create memories to
last a lifetime, parents also notice the impact a
camp can have on their child with 61% saying
their children appeared to be more confident
after attending camp.
One parent whose child attended Camp
Beaumont last summer said: “Our 5 year old
can be shy and unwilling to try new things but
we were delighted with how he skipped in to
camp every day.”
And another who booked their child
into Camp Beaumont last October also
commented: “You’re the only camp in the
area that has truly made an effort to provide
a great offering during these current times.
You have saved me from insanity and
provided my children some normality
during the summer holidays and half term.”
That is why Camp Beaumont, which has
been running its camps for more than 40
years, is on hand with fun-filled activities to
help adventure seekers have the time of
their lives and allow them the chance to
make new friends, try new activities and
create memories to last a lifetime.
place from 26th July to 27th
and Governance factors that some Managers
now consider when building a more sustainable
philosophy within a portfolio. Public consciousness
as we know has shifted on a broad range of issues
and these ESG factors are a growing attempt to help
address areas becoming increasingly important to
savers.
This sustainable investment approach aims for
strong, long-term returns with a desire to improve
corporate practices thus benefiting society and the
environment. This sounds very laudable of course,
but versions of this have been around for some
time receiving a somewhat lukewarm response due
to a perception of higher costs and a trade-off in
performance.
Interestingly the performance of some of the
specialist funds in this area is very impressive.
Risk rated solutions from managers are also making
this approach accessible to those looking for true
diversification of risk, and more solutions are coming
to market. In fact, Morningstar research shows that
amounts invested into ESG funds have increased by
53% over the past year.
Electric battery development is for example a key
focus for many of the traditional fuel suppliers, and
the winners in this race could provide significant
investment returns. Related to this, is the consistent
income generated by wind & solar farms and this can
also represent a strong diversifier.
We believe this is an exciting development where
investing money in line with our own financial
plan also creates a potentially greater
outcome to our planet.
EYE HEALTH
Sunshine Eyes
With the sun making its appearance again
the temptation to eat inside with friends
and family and with theatres and events
opening we will be looking at Summer
with anticipation.
So, are your eyes ready for the welcome sights
ahead ? Do your sunglasses give you the correct
UV protection? Are they a desirable style and fit?
Whether it’s prescription or non-prescription you
need an optician who is qualified to give you the
best possible advice.
What about contact lenses? You don’t have to
wear them full time; in fact daily disposables
are perfectly suited to modern lifestyles. If you
wear glasses, contact lenses can be worn for
sports, hobbies and social events, providing a
great-value alternative.
If you have worn contact lenses before or tried
them out, do ask your optician for advice. With
new, advanced materials offering more comfort,
oxygen permeability and extended prescription
ranges on offer there might well be a suitable
contact lens for you.
Opticians have enhanced cleaning procedures
and distancing measures. If you’ve accomplished
your DIY and baked your way through the
last few months now is the time to get those
‘peepers’ tested and ensure you are doing the
best for your eyes.
Indoor meets
outdoor spaces
With most of us at home over the last
eighteen months those of us lucky
enough to have gardens can create an
indoor/outdoor living space which can
be life-changing. Not only does it enable
us to entertain with friends and family it
lets us enjoy coffee and croissants on the
patio surrounded perhaps by birdsong,
barbecues on warmer days or simply
retreating under cover with the sliding
doors open when it rains!
Planning your indoor/outdoor living
spaces.
When planning your interior design, it is
important to budget for your outdoor
space(s) too, especially the area closest
to the house. This needs to look just as
attractive as indoor spaces and they do
need to ‘flow’ visually into one another,
especially if you need go through the
house to get to the back garden. It is worth
landscaping the garden before making a
start on your interior spaces.
Use your windows to ‘frame’ your
garden views
Most of the year we infrequently get to sit
outside and enjoy our garden, so it’s very
important to have visually stimulating views
of your garden from the house. This might
be a lovely tree, water feature, garden
sculpture or sitting area. Outside my studio
window I have a corten tree sculpture with
a couple of modern bird feeders, and I
love watching my little feather friends visit
throughout the year!
Think about
materials used
inside and out
Many homes
open out on to
a garden via large
folding or sliding
doors, so you can
extend internal
flooring to your
terrace or patio
in the same or
similar colour.
Materials such
as slate, limestone,
porcelain and
wood can be used inside and outside to
18 Beaconsfield Together is part of Community Together

INTERIORS
create a single space. This will also make
the space feel much bigger and it is worth
considering outdoor-style furniture that can
be moved outside when the sun shines and
pulled back in during the cooler months.
With such a great selection of outdoor fabrics
available furniture can become multi-functional.
Do think about the style of both your
interior and your exterior
Take a look at your space inside and create a
similar style outside, for example if you have a
sleek modern kitchen then it is important that
the mood and style outside reflects this with
contemporary paving, garden furniture and
minimal planting. Recently in a contemporary
project in Taplow I used a soft blush and navy
palette in the family and kitchen area which
opened onto the garden. To complement the
scheme I used corten steel planters, a water
feature and patterned screens with minimal
planting and natural stone. Pull your palette
of colours, style and materials from your home
and base your planting palette, furniture, pots,
sculptures and choice of materials and colours
to unify the scheme.
Lighting
outdoor living
spaces
As with indoor
spaces, it is
important to
light outdoor
spaces to add
a touch of
‘magic’, as you
sit and enjoy
the garden in
the summer
but especially
when you look
out of your
windows
through the
long, dark
winter months.
Subtle exterior
lighting is key which creates drama and
atmosphere throughout the year if you
do not wish to drawer the curtains. The
contrast between light and shade picks out
beautiful textures of bark, foliage and walls.
Enjoy your home and gardens and have a
wonderful summer and I hope it is full of
sunshine and laughter!
COMMUNITY NEWS
Community service by
local kitchen founder
Founder of Ashford Kitchens & Interiors,
Richard Flower has been volunteering at the
local food bank in Slough since November
2020. “It is a huge operation with two
large warehouses in Slough trading estate”
Richard explains.
He was on food packing, making up boxes for
different categories of clients from single people,
couples to small and large families. “Clients who
are referred receive 3 lots of food for 3 days
which includes a very generous amount of food.
It really emphasises how these food banks are
such a lifeline for people who have fallen into
hard times.” says Richard. Parcels distributed
from Slough, serve people in need in Slough,
Windsor, Maidenhead and Gerrards Cross areas.
In addition to this Ashford Kitchens have a One
Can Trust donation box outside their shop which
has been open for donations throughout the
numerous lockdowns. As some of the office
staff have been in the showroom receiving
deliveries and managing ongoing installations,
they were able to collect any food donations
outside the shop daily and then bring inside for
safe keeping, until they were ready for delivery to
High Wycombe One Can Trust. The generosity
seen has been incredible and is so important to
local people and families.
How a song could help save a life
Are you a singer? Or do you belong to a
choir? At the Epilepsy Society, we are looking
for lots of voices from the community to help
us raise awareness of how to help someone
if they are having a seizure.
One of our
supporters, Teni
Majek, has written
and performed a song
based on our simple
seizure first aid
message ‘Calm,
Cushion, Call’. Now
we are hoping that
other singers and
choirs in the area
will record their own
version as part of a
compilation video
that we are putting
together.
We are hoping to hear from mums, dads,
children, school choirs, church choirs, friends
on the sofa, colleagues in the canteen,
picnickers on Gold Hill Common – whoever
and wherever.
You can listen to Teni’s song at
bit.ly/epilepsy-singasong
All you need to do is record yourself singing
it on your mobile – turning the phone to
landscape – and send your video to
pressoffice@epilepsysociety.org.uk
Many people with epilepsy fear going outside
in case they have a seizure and no-one is
able to help them. Teni’s song and your voices
could help spread the vital message ‘Calm,
Cushion, Call’ and make people feel more
confident when in public. It could even help
save a life.
FINANCIAL NEWS
When can I
afford to retire?
You may have an idea about the type of
lifestyle you want, but knowing if your
expenditure will be sustainable is not
straightforward.
In terms of budgeting, inflation is a big factor
over 20 to 30 years, and it’s easy to overlook
capital expenses like replacing cars or home
refurbishments. The investment strategies in
our pensions are vital in determining the
potential sustainability of our income. Yet,
these are often ignored by many savers.
The order in which we draw from our assets
in retirement, and the use of available tax
allowances, can also play a significant factor
in our money’s longevity, but these are not
simple matters.
Ben Walter, CEO at Walter & Partners,
comments, “Planning for retirement has never
been so important, with people living longer
and more active lives. We help our clients map
out their retirement budgets, recommend
appropriate investment strategies, and advise on
drawing from their assets in a tax-efficient way.
This ongoing process provides clarity, direction,
and peace of mind when planning for, and
living in retirement”. You can find out more
Old Town Public Toilets Refurbishment
Although it has taken longer than we had
hoped to get the necessary permissions
in place, we are now able to press on with
the refurbishment of the Public Toilets in the
Old Town.
Public toilets are an essential service. There has
been a decline in provision across the country
over the last decade and this is something which
contributes to social isolation with some people
Female WC
DDA WC
not wishing to leave home unless they are sure of
being able to access facilities.
Urinal
Initially, our new design was based around the
Male WC
concept of making the toilets dementia-friendly
as part of our wish to try and make the whole
town Existing as dementia-friendly Layout
as possible. For people
suffering with dementia sometimes the most
simple things can become confusing. But with
careful thought and good design practice, some
of these issues can be overcome.
Whilst our designer was working on the concept,
the pandemic struck and we had to send them
back to the drawing board as we wanted the
new design to be both dementia-friendly and to
reduce risk of covid or other potential infection.
Notes - See tender document for full details
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
In the spotlight - Alastair Pike, Beaconsfield
Town Mayor
Welcome to Alastair,
Beaconsfield’s new
Mayor. We asked Alastair
a few questions so we
can get to know him
a little better. Tell us a
little bit about your
background:
I grew up in Liverpool
in the early 60’s when
you either kicked a ball
in the street or played a
guitar in someone’s
garage.
My early recollections
included standing on
Alastair with boys’ Andrew and David
the terraces at Goodison
with Everton’s trophies.
Park in 1959 and then starting my grammar
school education at the Liverpool Institute a year
later. It was a period packed with memories, first
the Beatles and the Stones and then the death of
Kennedy. Local MP Harold Wilson became Prime
Minister in 1964 and we had a mock election at
school. My father, a local Headmaster, was not
impressed by my voting intentions!
What was your first job and how
did your career develop?
My first job was with Martins
Bank but I soon realised that
industry was more appealing.
After spells with United
Biscuits, Bibbys and
Spear Jackson I joined the
Swedish multinational Alfa
Laval in 1974 later becoming
Head of IT. Then to the Swiss
company Landis & Gyr where
I was Head of Distribution in
the UK. I started a consultancy
business in 1988 and worked for AEG,
Whitbread Hotels and Hilton International.
Apart from the Debating Society and Spanish
which were fun I couldn’t wait to start earning a
living. Attempting to “get rich quick” I entered
the weekly “Spot the Ball” competition in the
local newspaper. Early joy with a second prize of
£44 was short lived when my mother announced
that the money should be divided equally
between the whole family. There was a lesson
to be learned there which I would never forget.
Spot which player is Alastair!
Alastair and Varvara in St Petersburgh
How did you get involved in an art business?
Having acquired an art materials shop in 2000 the
local artist Irene John suggested that we started
art lessons. Irene was our first tutor in 2004 and
within 5 years we were running almost 30 classes a
week in nine towns. Today we are concentrated in
four locations with demand divided between the
young and the old, the working and the retired.
As a hobby, art is incredibly popular but ironically
choice of class is often determined by when the
“student” is available not by the medium. Our
current goal is to have every class back face to
face in September.
What made you interested in the Town Council?
My interest is almost certainly in the genes. My
father was Chair of Education for Wirral Borough
28 Beaconsfield Together is part of Community Together

Council in the mid 70’s but it was only in 2005
whilst working as a consultant for Windsor &
Maidenhead that I realised that government did
know what they were doing and that there really
was joined up thinking through all the tiers. I first
became a councillor in Beaconsfield in 2010 and
this year on 20th May became the Town Mayor.
This is a great honour and I hope that I will be able
to “add value” through my years of experience in
both the Public and Private Sectors. Specifically, I
want to see closer links between residents and the
Council. If we can achieve this then I will feel that
we have made progress.
Tell us about life for you outside of work and
council business?
Football is never far away from our family’s life and
coming from Merseyside we follow our heroes
fanatically generation after generation. It was
a memorable moment in 1985 with my sons
Andrew and David with the European Cup
Winners Cup, the F.A. Cup and the Charity Shield.
1984/85 was a flagship moment for Evertonians
and today, my son Andrew and his boys’, Edward
and George follow in their father’s footsteps,
with my other son, Davids’s twins, Jessica & Ethan
and now daughter Kaira all owning their own
T-Shirts! I have now stepped back and with my
artist partner, Varvara to spend time with her family
in St Petersburg.
Editor: We wish Alastair every success in his new
role as Mayor of Beaconsfield.
EDUCATION NEWS
Calling all students past
and present from The
Beaconsfield School
You may be surprised to hear that The
Beaconsfield School has been teaching
local children since 1854.
We have occupied three local buildings since our
inception, including the old Ribbon Factory in
Factory Yard and The Old Church School building
(which is now the Beaconsfield Masonic Centre).
Our current school site is 90 years old in 2022 and
we are in the process of creating an exciting project
which will celebrate our heritage.
We have fantastic archive photos and documents
from as far back as 1854 as well as a ‘History of the
Beaconsfield School’ book which has been written
by an ex-teacher of the school. These treasures
depict our links with the local community, historical
buildings and generations of local people.
The campaign will take place between December
2021 when the foundation stone was laid (1931)
and July 2022 (the school was re-opened in
July 1932) and our local community will be
invited to join us to view our rich history displayed
throughout the school, hear stories from alumni
about their time here at The Beaconsfield School
and watch a performance by our current students
which will tell the story of the school.
If you attended the school at any time, please get
in touch with any photos or memories that you
have so that we can keep growing our archives for
future generations!
Please send in any photos, school
reports, school magazines or memories
to cgriffiths@beaconsfield.school
Education news
from Anita Cranmer
For our children this has been a year to
remember! We are proud of the way
our schools have coped with the Covid
lockdown... Families receive lateral flow
test kits twice a week, masks are worn
where appropriate and ‘bubbles’ and
‘social distancing’ remain in place.
We know that changes and adaptations have
taken their toll. Children need social interaction
and stimulation from learning to thrive and they
feel missed out. Outwardly the system continues.
In Bucks 2341 children sat 11+ and 99% got their
first preference. Movement into Upper Schools
produced a 95% success in achieving first choice.
Exams have been adapted to a long series of
shorter tests which are graded by the schools.
Some GCSE and A level students sat through
30+ short exams this way. Congratulations to the
teachers who have kept the system going.
We do know that some have suffered. The
government is providing money for “Catch up “
tuition in the summer ... Mental health ‘wellness’
is being addressed in every school. Incidences of
some young people exhibiting stress has been
high. The good news is that our vaccination
programme has been excellent and the eligible
age range is lowering.
Eye catching
summer trends
THE YOUNG
Images courtesy from Jak & Liza’s stockists.
The long-awaited warmer weather
and more freedom from government
restrictions brings more creativity and
expression in our fashion choices,
especially in terms of colour, pattern
and texture.
A pastel colour palette took centre stage on
both the catwalk runways and street fashion
with colours like lavenders, pistachios and
muted oranges - perfect for pairing with
neutral items for a seasonal, striking burst of
colour. Through the lockdowns, many of us
took up new hobbies at home. An example of
this being the recent enthusiasm for crocheted
cardigans, dresses, bralettes and tote bags that
give off an effortless bohemian appearance -
just in time for the brighter days.
I spoke to the
inspirational and
fashionable Samantha
Kenwright, owner of
clothing shop Jak & Liza
in Beaconsfield New
Town, to get her
perspective on summer
trends and how
COVID-19 has affected
the fashion industry.
Her inspiration for
fashion like many
of us derives from
celebrities like Audrey
Hepburn, Cameron
Diaz and Kate Middleton.
more flattering when paired with the wide leg
silhouettes.
I asked her how the pandemic had affected
High Street shops: “I think shopping habits have
changed because we are not going out so
often and feel less need to dress up - during
that time we’ve got more and more used
to shopping online”. She also said “the
Beaconsfield community has been very
supportive of her business during these
difficult times”.
I asked her about her advice for someone
wanting to shop more sustainably. She
expressed her view that the best way to do
that is by shopping on your local High Street,
supporting independent shops – 70% of the
brands she supplies are more sustainable!
Sam has always been determined to be a
part of the fashion industry. She worked at
her mother’s independent clothing store in
Liverpool when she was 13 and moved to
London to pursue fashion when she was
18. Some of her favourite fashion-trends for the
summer include comfortable wide-leg trousers
(seen recently on Kate Middleton), raw hem
jeans and tops/blouses slightly shorter to be
JOURNALIST
The art of meditation
Maddie Godsell-Tagg
Schools and universities
have returned, social
events are taking place,
pubs and restaurants have
opened, summer is around
the corner and everything’s returning to
a form of normal.
As nice as it is to socialise with friends and family
many will feel overwhelmed by the easing of
restrictions. It is good to have an awareness of
various coping-mechanisms that can be used in
times of unease and anxiety and I find comfort in
creative outlets. In particular reading, painting,
drawing, and writing allow me to take my mind
off any stress in a healthy and constructive way.
Another outlet, known to have multiple positive
impacts on your physical and mental well-being,
is a practice which dates back to as early as 5000
BC and has religious ties to Judaism, Hinduism,
Jainism, Sikhism and Buddhism. It focuses on
training attention and awareness to achieve a
mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable
state, more commonly known as Meditation.
According to Francisco Mendizabal, a meditator
instructor and founder of HackSelf, there are many
types of meditation which can be categorised
into 9 types, each with different focuses and
requirements but generally they reduce
stress, improves focus and decision-making,
improves your
mood, decreases
aggressiveness,
reduces jobstrain,
and burn out,
and has lessened
symptoms of
depression and
anxiety in people
who meditated for
an 8-week period.
Correlations between
meditation and sleep,
weight loss, relationships and pain has also been
found since it is a process that builds up areas of
our brains and rewires it to enhance positive traits
(focusing and decision making) and diminishes the
more pessimistic ones (fear and stress).
Angie Tiwari (@tiwariyoga on Instagram)
works as an assistant yoga teacher for GROW’s
‘holistic programme of yoga and meditation’. She
particularly places emphasis on the importance
of consistency, patience, and reflection as key
qualities when engaging in the two practices.
For example, starting with 10 minutes daily, the
aim of being patient with yourself, maintaining
persistence, alongside having a ‘why’ and sticking
to a routine is the best way to begin. For more
LOCAL BUSINESS
Check your tyres
regularly!
Checking the condition of your tyres
regularly is very important for your safety
- they are the only thing between you and
the road! There are better ways of checking
your tyres than kicking them, and we asked
Alex Dunlop owner of A. J Dunlop in Old
Town, Beaconsfield, to give us some pointers
on how to do this ourselves. Look at these
photos of common tyre problems and read
what Alex has to say about each one.
The tyre tread in this
photo is worn to the
minimum legal depth
of 1.6mm. An easy
way to check is to look
for the wear bars, they
can be found in the
tread and you can see
them in the picture.
When the tyre treads
wears down so it is
level with the wear
bars, your tyre has
reached its minimum
legal requirement.
In this picture the
Wheel alignment
of the vehicle is
incorrect. The tyre
has worn on the
inside edge all the
way through to the
webbing which is the
main structure of the
tyre. You wouldn’t
see this at a glance
because it is on the
inside of the tyre when the rest of the tyre
appears in good condition.
Driving on this tyre would likely soon cause a
blow out, or a flat.
out, hitting a pot hole
or even mounting a
steep curb can cause
this and you may not
notice any difference in the steering. We
advise you to get the wheel alignment checked,
if you are aware of hitting something. Also get
the alignment checked at the annual service of
the car.
Perfectly good tyre on the outside but in the
inside of the tyre the tyre is blistered, torn and
ruined. This is what happens when the tyre
went flat and the driver continued to drive the
car. The customer only covered a few metres
on the flat tyre, then pumped up the tyre at
a garage. They then continued driving with a
slow puncture, unaware of the severe internal
damage.
A perfect tyre with
good tread....
I hope these photos
will help you check
that you are driving on
safe and legal tyres. If
in doubt, get in touch
with your local garage
or call into A. J Dunlop
and they will be happy
to help.
Alex Dunlop
It does not take much to put the alignment
BUSINESS NEWS
A little history about
Flackwell Financial Ltd
In the early days, it was very much a
mortgage broking business, but the
Investment and Pension business started
to build through the 90s and Karen joined
in 1998 to strengthen the team.
In the mid-90s we opened an office in
Flackwell Heath and changed the name
to link to our new home. That was until, in
1999, when we moved to Wooburn Green
and 2016 to Hazlemere and decided against
any further name changes; today we remain
as Flackwell.
Philip Stebbings and Karen Webb
Mortgages have always been the backdrop
to our business. Today, we are arranging
mortgages for the children (now adults) of
couples who were first time buyers in our early
years.
When cohabiting parents separate who pays for bringing
up the children?
The number of couples living together, without
getting married or entering into a civil partnership
has increased significantly, more than doubling
between 1996 and 2017. Many cohabiting couples
have children, and naturally expect life will be
‘happy ever after’.
Sadly that is not always the case – and when
co-habiting couples separate there can be
financial implications regarding the support of their
children that weren’t anticipated. It is particularly
important for unmarried parents to understand the
options available if they do separate.
Following relationship breakdown, the first step
for many parents, married or unmarried, is to
seek regular monthly payments for their children
through the Child Maintenance Service. The Child
Maintenance Service ensures that a non-resident
parent ie. the parent no longer living with and
looking after the children, contributes to the financial
support of their natural children, the amount payable
depending on the income of the non-resident parent
and other factors.
Schedule 1 of the Children Act 1989 enables the
parent with care of a child to claim financial support
from the other parent and not just limited to
maintenance payments. In fact, Schedule 1 allows
the Court to make wide ranging awards for the
benefit of a child, such as requiring that a property
or home is provided, payment of lump sums,
payment of school fees, support through university,
or “top-up” maintenance. The Court has wide
discretion when deciding what financial support
needs to be provided to meet a child’s needs.
A word of warning regarding Schedule 1 awards:
whatever the Court decides will always be based
upon the needs of the child or children. The Court
looks at “all the circumstances” but the financial
award will never be made in order to benefit the
parent caring for the child or children.
Family breakdowns are distressing, both emotionally
and financially. For the parent with the continuing
care of children, determining at an early stage what
financial provision might be available is vital, and
Schedule 1 can often be the answer!
However, there RAYDEN_SFL_BECS_L_CMYK_130X90_OUT_1.pdf is another important provision Catrin 1 29/09/2020 Dawson, Associate 20:11 Solicitor
available which can often be overlooked.
Safe & gentle ear wax removal at a clinic near you
Ear wax removal should always be conducted by a qualified
medical professional. We do not recommend using over the
counter solutions to manually syringe your ears or using hopi
ear candling. Microsuction is recognised as the safest and gentlest
method to remove wax from the ear canal. It involves placing a
suction tube into the ear canal to gently suck the wax out. There
is no water involved, is a completely dry procedure and can be
done on ears that are not suitable for irrigation/syringing at the GP.
Irrigation is the use of a controlled flow of water to flush out
wax from the ear. It is safer than manual syringing which is now
a banned practice in the UK. Irrigation can be particularly useful
for very deep wax. Your audiologist should make the most
appropriate recommendation on how to remove the wax.
Our associated clinicians are all registered with the HCPC. They
have all undertaken training, and achieved competency in wax
removal and should luse best practice procedures to ensure you
walk away a happy and satisfied customer.
Are you experiencing any of the following?
• Pressure in the ears
• Blocked feeling in the ears
• Need to pop your ears but can’t
• Sudden loss of hearing or muffles sound
• Hearing aids whistling
• Underperforming hearing aids
If you are experiencing any of the above then book in to see us today!
Your ears will be happy you did.
WAITROSE
A short history
of Waitrose
& Partners,
Beaconsfield
Buckinghamshire Culture Open Weekend
runs from 22nd - 25th July in order to
re-engage with people in the aftermath
of lockdown by organising events and
activities themed around stories or
storytelling. It seemed pertinent to
share the history of Waitrose & Partners
in Beaconsfield.
In 1904, three young
businessmen opened
their first grocery store
in Acton: Wallace Waite,
David Taylor and Arthur
Rose all very successful
in selling a wide range
of grocery products.
David Taylor left the
business, and in 1908
Waite and Rose formed
Waitrose Limited. The
business continued to
grow, acquiring more
small grocery shops in
the Acton area. Sadly,
Arthur Rose was injured
in The Great War and
Wallace Waite took
over responsibility of
running the stores.
Wallace Waite
Arthur Rose
Arthur Rose left the business in 1924 but
the stores continued to flourish, including
branches between Windsor and Gerrards
Cross. By 1937 Wallace Waite was looking
for someone to take over the business, and
in October the ten Waitrose stores joined
the John Lewis Partnership, which had been
founded by John Spedan Lewis in 1929.
In the early 1950s, self-service shopping
became popular and Waitrose opened its
First grocery shop at 263 Acton Hill, London
first supermarket in Streatham in 1955.
By the early 1970s there were 50 Waitrose
branches with a plan to continue expansion.
Then came the arrival of Waitrose
Beaconsfield on 28 September 1982,
built on the site of the former Earl of
Beaconsfield public house under Branch
Manager Ian Ray, which changed the face
of grocery shopping in the town.
Waitrose Beaconsfield open its doors in 1982
Since then there have been six Branch
Managers - Ian Ray, David Paul, Paul
Miller, Lee Homer, Alistair Boot and Steve
Peppiatt, each having steered the store
through huge changes in the shopping
habits of the local community, the most
obvious being the arrival four years ago
of our e-commerce delivery vans with
Waitrose.com.
42 Beaconsfield Together is part of Community Together

About fifteen years ago an extension was
added to the store, resulting in a large
increase in floorspace - and availability of
products. Waitrose enjoys a reputation for
stocking items not always available in other
supermarkets and our Partners are always
willing to recommend favourite ingredients
or recipes.
Our regular customers will know we are
currently undergoing a refurbishment that
will yet again bring changes to the store.
Whilst we endure the stresses of the building
work, we know that the end result will be
worth it! Completion is due mid-August,
Come and see all the improvements for
GARDENING
Grow your
own organic
vegetables in
a raised bed!
Raised beds are the perfect way to grow
vegetables in your garden or allotment.
They are easy to maintain, taking much
less time to plant and weed because of the
comfortable working height and enclosed
relatively small area. The bed can be built
on a hard surface and where quality soil is
unavailable, a raised bed is an ideal solution.
When the timber is suitably treated and
stained they will last a good few years.
This design is for a 5 foot square bed, but you
can adjust the dimensions to suit your space,
each about a foot deep, The bed base timbers
were supported below with 3 cross batons
attached to the bottom of each bed. We raised
the bed 2 feet off the ground and the corner
posts extended through the beds and
continued up 1 foot to support netting that
protects the plants from pests. Finally, an
additional leg was wedged centrally under
the bed base.
PVC (damp course) sheets were added, one
inside the bed, one on the ground below.
Numerous drainage holes were made in
the PVC, we used a barbecue skewer! We
filled the beds with organic soil and added
compost and manure. Carefully consider
which vegetables you would like to grow, and
how much space they need between planting!
Materials
Tanalised timber rough-sawn painted with
a suitable fence forest green paint was used to
blend in with the garden. As we were lining the
timber bed with PVC we felt it was safe to
grow vegetables using painted and treated
wood.
Building & Assembly
• Cut the base and sides to 5 feet lengths,
corner legs to 4 feet, and the central leg to
2 feet. Additionally, cut cross supports to 5
feet and edging batons to 5 feet.
• Paint with 2 coats paying particular attention
to cut ends and let dry.
• Take one leg and screw 2 side pieces to one
face with approx. 1 inch gap between side
pieces. Use at least two 100 mm screws for
each leg/side piece connection.
• Repeat for the other 2 side pieces attaching
at right angles to the first two. The leg should
be on the inside.
• Repeat the assembly for the diagonally
opposite leg.
Base and sides: Eight off, 10 feet by 6 inches
by 2 inches
Legs and cross support: Four off, 10 feet by
3 inches by 2 inches
Edging batons: Two off, 10 feet by 2 inches
by 1 inch
PVC sheets: One off, 8m by 4m
Soil: 500L organic soil plus 1 bag of compost,
1 bag of organic manure
Screws: 100 mm (Box of 100 should be
enough), size 6, 50 mm size 5 rustproof screws
• With legs horizontal screw the two
assemblies together to form a square using
the 3rd and 4th legs.
• Add the three cross members inside the
bottom of the base dividing the base area
into four.
• Screw the eight base timbers to the
underside of the bed sides and the cross
members leaving a small gap between
them for expansion and drainage.
• Using two people rotate the bed the correct
way up. Cut the PVC sheet and place the
pieces in and at the base of the bed. Use the
shorter screws to fix the batons horizontally
holding the PVC in place along the edges.
• Add soil and vegetables, water and feed
regularly and watch your vegetables grow!
Plants we are growing
Spinach, red peppers, pak choi, mange tout,
rainbow carrotts, cucumbers and lettuces.
