Their interest in undermining our casual
acceptance of cultural norms is reflected in The
Connor Brothers’ extraordinary background. They
themselves began their career masquerading as
innocent twins who had emerged traumatised
from a Californian cult and were struggling to
make sense of the world through their art.

Their fictional persona was designed to protect
their real personal histories but their success led
them to break cover and they revealed their true
identities. They retained their famous pseudonym
however, reminding us to question our
assumptions about other people, and ourselves.
The Connor Brothers have been widely featured
in the media; there have been sell-out shows at
galleries all over the world, and their work has
been shown at such diverse settings as the V&A,
the Penguin Collection and Banksy’s Dismaland.
At Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Online Auction
in May 2021 The Bestest and Most Expensivist
Painting in the History of Art which they executed
in 2020 sold for over £44000 – which was 300%
more than the estimate.

The new collection from Mr Brainwash is a presentday
tribute to Andy Warhol using an unexpected
piece of source material – the cryptocurrency
symbol for bitcoin. This increasingly ubiquitous
image has been in the headlines many times
over the years and on frequent occasions it
has been criticised by Jordan Belfort, AKA the
Wolf of Wall Street, who said it had been used
to brainwash investors! All cultural images and
controversies are of interest to Mr Brainwash
whose work consistently reinterprets the worlds
of both high art and popular culture for his own
artistic, or sometimes mischievous, purposes.
These bold and dynamic images encourage us
to view the digital age through a different lens,
and to acknowledge that in the presence of Mr
Brainwash, art is everywhere – there are no rules!
