High rollers in real estate What do you get when you put three successful real estate agents and two creative minds together? Not only do you get a high-end and locally produced reality show on BBC, but also a first of its kind ... We catch up with the team of Listing Jozi at Bassonia Estate, one of the most sought-after estates in Joburg South, to find out what they are all about. So without further ado, let’s introduce you to three of the five cast members of the reality programme Listing Jozi: Ryan Kwan, Jabulile Mazibuko and Edgar Nche from Law Real Estate in Joburg South and the production team from AlternaTV, Nico Nel and Trevor Kaplan. BORN TO BE IN SALES Ryan is the leader of the pack for team Kwan and resides in the North, although his business is predominantly based in the South of Johannesburg. Being born and bred a Southerner, he attended Glenanda Primary School and Glenvista High School and grew up in what he describes as an amazing and loving family, made up of his sister Hayle, mum Merle and dad Edgar. Some of his favourite childhood memories are riding the streets on his bicycle and rollerblading down Biggarsberg Road. Thaba Trails is still one of his favourite spots to ride his bicycle. He is married to Nicola and they are proud parents of Rachel and Rebecca. Getting into sales Meeting Ryan for the first time, he comes across as quite reserved and we simply had to ask whether he would describe himself as an introvert or extrovert? ‘Socially, I’m an introvert but when I’m at work I’m an extrovert’, and that is definitely part of his success because it soon becomes clear that he loves what he is doing. ‘I fell in love with real estate by mistake. As a young man, during my experimental and learning years, I had a passion for sales. I decided to give real estate a try and discovered I was very good at it! I have never looked back and absolutely love my career.’ His vision is to create a brand in real estate which is nationally recognised as the best in the business. His mission is to improve every day through hard work and discipline. The opportunity to work with clients from different walks of life and backgrounds is the best part of his job. The driving force behind his career is helping others. ‘It’s also incredibly fulfilling being able to help people fulfil their dreams of owning property. It’s a satisfying feeling when you give someone the keys to their new home. ‘However, real estate is a demanding job. You are always available and on call. In my experience, finding the perfect balance between work and your other commitments is the hardest part of the job. ‘I wish I had more time in a day. I do my best to plan and structure each day the night before. Clinching the deal The most expensive property Ryan has sold is a house in Meyersdal Eco Estate for R17-million. When asked how he did it, he simply said, ‘High-end deals are very confidential. All I can say is it happened with a lot of persistence. ‘Every sales job comes with challenges and requires problem-solving. The trick is to recognise very quickly what makes a client happy, so they don’t have a chance to be difficult.’ Looking back on his career he is firm in his answer that he will choose real estate over and over again. ‘It is more rewarding than any other career. It never gets boring, teaches you about life and yourself and challenges you. I cannot imagine doing anything else and I don’t want to imagine it either.’ When asked about side hustles, his answer is simple: ‘No side hustles, real estate is a full-time job. I plan to be the best agent in the country.’ THE CREATIVE WHO TURNED AGENT Living in Glenvista, Jabulile Mazibuko grew up in Joburg South while attending St Andrew’s School for Girls in Bedfordview. ‘My older brother and I were raised by my tough-as-nails mother who came from a disadvantaged background, but she was determined to work hard to create a good life for herself and her children.’ Thaba Trails and Kliprivier Nature Reserve are her favourite go-to spots and she describes the South as an area with the best views of hills and mountain sites. ‘I love the down-to-earth energy of the people you find in the South. The community is reasonably small, so eventually you get plugged into the community, which is beautiful.’ Finding herself in real estate Jabulile studied fine art throughout school and for a year at Rhodes University. She always wanted to be an artist but then had a change of heart. ‘Art, however, is still one of my favourite hobbies.’ Soon after she acquired her interior decorating certificate and started working on a few decorating jobs, she felt she needed a bigger challenge. ‘I feel like this career chose me. An advert for a real estate agent job popped up on my timeline and I thought why not? I applied and was hired the following week. I haven’t looked back since. I am certainly glad it chose me because I would not have gravitated to it naturally.’ Although she feels she is an introvert at heart who prefers to be alone and in small intimate places in her personal life, her job, however, forced her to be more social. ‘When I am on the job I am very much an extrovert. I enjoy meeting different people and engaging with them on various topics. My job entails me speaking to people, both buyers and sellers, daily. ‘I have to constantly be on the lookout for new business while facilitating and coordinating my pending transactions as well.’ Career-driven ‘As a company, we have a performance culture that values hard work. We recognise that hard work is at the heart of every successful brand. ‘I am intrinsically motivated and have a deep desire to reach my full potential. I am also blessed to be able to work with a very motivated team and I can draw motivation and inspiration from my team as well. ‘Managing a deal from start to finish is something that requires being on top of your game. This will ensure you will be able to foresee a problem before it occurs and can therefore find ways to solve it. ‘You have to be the middleman between buyer and seller. As the agent, my job is to make sure I manage this relationship and ensure both parties are happy and comfortable.’ Jabulile explained tolerance is key and that you simply cannot take things personally. ‘You meet all kinds of people from all walks of life and you need to be able to respond accordingly. Part of this job is also about understanding how to read and understand people so you can understand their needs better to match them to the right home. ‘And after all of this, handing over a property and having satisfied clients at the end of the transaction is always the best feeling.’ Big deals and huge plans For Jabulile, planning and scheduling is critical in the business. ‘You are constantly juggling a lot of balls and several things can fall through the cracks. You have to be a planner and run a tight schedule to succeed in this industry.’ Her most expensive property sold is in Eye of Africa for R5 799 000. ‘I took the buyers to view the house and it was love at first sight.’ Any side hustles? ‘Real Estate is my only hustle. It is a demanding job and to be the best you need to give it 100% every day, and that is my goal. I want to immerse myself in as much real estate knowledge as possible and continuously refine my craft. ‘I am working towards acquiring my PDE 4, and once I am a full status agent I will be able to run my own team.
