Book club
Winter … bed, book and red wine weather!
Finding love, hope and joy in even the darkest moments. In Lucy Diamond’s The Promise,
a young man whose brother has just died is on a mission … a project to help pick up the
pieces and support his grieving sister-in-law Zoe, plus her young children. This is his promise
– to ensure his family’s happiness, and to try and live up to the man his brother was. But
tying up loose ends brings a shocking secret to light, and calls into question everything he
knew about his older brother, and he’s faced with an ultimatum – should he tell the truth
and risk his family’s fragile happiness, or will his brother’s secrets end up becoming his
own? Pan Macmillan. • Oh dear. Get the tissues out. Pippo and Clara by Diana Rosie is set
in Italy in 1938. Mussolini is in power, and war isn’t far off. Clara and Pippo are children, their
family new to the city. One morning, their mamma goes missing, and 10-year-old Clara
needs to find her. She doesn’t know which way to turn. A little later, her younger brother
goes out, looking for his mum and sister. Clara’s turned one way, he turns the other. And
so their lives are changed forever. In a country torn apart by war, siblings are divided by
fate. But there’s an invisible bond that connects us to those we love, no matter which way
we turn. A chilly weekend, a fireplace and soft sofa and a copy of this heart-warming novel
… heaven. Mantle • Not Dark Yet is Peter Robinson’s latest Alan Banks crime novel, which
opens with a gruesome double murder at a property developer’s luxury home. With a
clear link to the notoriously vicious Albanian mafia, it should be an open-and-shut case for
Superintendent Banks and his team. But when they find a cache of spy-cam videos in the
house, the investigation pivots to the rape of a young girl, and the murders are cast in an
entirely different light. Hodder and Stoughton.
Middelvlei Wines winemaker Tinnie Momberg describes this Free-Run
Pinotage 2019 as a wine with complex flavours of raspberries, mulberries and
elegant oak spices, adding that the gentle tannins are perfectly balanced by the
fruit weight with creamy vanilla flavours that linger on the palate. It’s lovely with
a braai, and you’ll find it for R150 a bottle from middelvlei.co.za
Lies. Mistakes. And missing children.
Doesn’t get more nerve-shredding
than this. When They Find Her – an
emotional debut by Lia Middleton
– is about a desperate mother, a
tragic accident, and a terrible lie that
spirals out of control. It’s the story of
Naomi, who after making a dreadful
mistake, lost custody of her only
child, a daughter who’s come home
for a visit, giving Naomi a chance to
rebuild her family. But the night
ends in a terrible accident, and
Naomi reports her daughter missing.
Which is a lie. But worse than the lie
is the truth … which is she has no
memory of what really happened.
Penguin Random House.
When no one knows you exist, you don’t have to play by the rules. In Tom
Marcus’ Defend or Die, former MI5 officer Matt Logan is part of a totally deniable
government organisation, with full license to do whatever it takes to neutralise
threats to the UK’s national security. License he takes full advantage of when
intelligence comes through about plans by the Kremlin to launch a terror attack in
London, one which could tear the nation apart. Marcus – not his real name – writes
with complete authority … in his day job, he was hand-picked from the army to be
a surveillance officer for MI5, where he spent a decade on the front line protecting
his country before leaving due to PTSD. His debut book, Soldier Spy, was the first
true ground-level account to be told about the fight on the streets – and had to be
vetted and cleared for publication by MI5. Due to continuing threats, his identity
is hidden, and he continues to work with the security service and other agencies
to ensure he stays safe. Macmillan • There’s never been a David Baldacci we haven’t
loved … so oh joy … a new one’s just hit the bookshelves. A Gambling Man is
set in the late 1940s. Aloysius Archer’s heading west to California. Not yet 30, and
fresh out of prison for a crime he didn’t commit, his wants are fairly simple … a roof
over his head, three meals a day and a steady supply of Lucky Strikes. Oh … and a
profession. Intrigued by a sign as the bus passes in Reno (the biggest little city in the
world), he jumps off, and later that evening, visits a casino, where he meets aspiring
actress Liberty Callahan. Off they go, on a journey that’s filled with more danger and
surprises they could have imagined … corruption, murder in a burlesque club, truth
mixed with lies and massive amounts of small-town-with-tight-lipped-community
intrigue. The era’s perfectly captured, the book thrilling. Macmillan.
Book of the month …
Mother-to-be Helen has it all. Daniel - the perfect husband. Rory - the perfect
brother. Serena - the perfect sister-in-law. And Rachel - the perfect nightmare.
When Helen attends her first antenatal class, she is expecting her loving husband
to arrive, along with charming Rory and his also pregnant wife, the effortlessly
beautiful Serena. What she is not expecting is Rachel. Extroverted, brash,
unsettling single mother-to-be Rachel, who just wants to be Helen’s friend. Who
just wants to get know Helen and her friends and her family. Who manages to
cleverly find out all the information she needs ... the question is, why does she
need it? Greenwich Park by Katherine Faulkner is a psychological thriller which
really is, in a month full of exceptional reads, a stand-out. You think you know
what’s going to happen. You don’t. And you won’t put it down. Bloomsbury,
A brand new
look and feel
While living in a world where everything is automated and instant, the
owner of tashas Bedfordview, Natasha Sideris, believes it is important
to slow down and celebrate the handmade. And although some may
think it old-fashioned, they still want their customers to have a complete
dining experience, and this is exactly what guests experienced at the
launch of the newly renovated store. Fourteen years after the store first
opened, and in parallel to the centre’s refurbishment, tashas has been
given a brand-new look and feel, and it simply had to be celebrated.
Nico Nel and Trevor Kaplan.
BORN TO BE IN SALES
Ryan is the leader of the pack for team Kwan and resides in the North, although
his business is predominantly based in the South of Johannesburg.
Being born and bred a Southerner, he attended Glenanda Primary School and
Glenvista High School and grew up in what he describes as an amazing and
loving family, made up of his sister Hayle, mum Merle and dad Edgar.
Some of his favourite childhood memories are riding the streets on his bicycle
and rollerblading down Biggarsberg Road. Thaba Trails is still one of his favourite
spots to ride his bicycle.
He is married to Nicola and they are proud parents of Rachel and Rebecca.
Getting into sales
Meeting Ryan for the first time, he comes across as quite reserved and we simply
had to ask whether he would describe himself as an introvert or extrovert?
‘Socially, I’m an introvert but when I’m at work I’m an extrovert’, and that is definitely
part of his success because it soon becomes clear that he loves what he
is doing.
‘I fell in love with real estate by mistake. As a young man, during my experimental
and learning years, I had a passion for sales. I decided to give real estate a try and
discovered I was very good at it! I have never looked back and absolutely love
my career.’
His vision is to create a brand in real estate which is nationally recognised as
the best in the business. His mission is to improve every day through hard work
and discipline.
The opportunity to work with clients from different walks of life and backgrounds
is the best part of his job. The driving force behind his career is helping others.
‘It’s also incredibly fulfilling being able to help people fulfil their dreams of owning
property. It’s a satisfying feeling when you give someone the keys to their
new home.
‘However, real estate is a demanding job. You are always available and on call. In
my experience, finding the perfect balance between work and your other commitments
is the hardest part of the job.
‘I wish I had more time in a day. I do
my best to plan and structure each
day the night before. I have dedicated
time blocked to each appointment
and task so I can maximise my ability
to achieve as much as possible.’
Clinching the deal
The most expensive property Ryan has sold is a house in Meyersdal Eco Estate
for R17-million.
When asked how he did it, he simply said, ‘High-end deals are very confidential.
All I can say is it happened with a lot of persistence.
‘Every sales job comes with challenges and requires problem-solving. The trick is
to recognise very quickly what makes a client happy, so they don’t have a chance
to be difficult.’
Looking back on his career he is firm in his answer that he will choose real estate
over and over again.
‘It is more rewarding than any other career. It never gets boring, teaches you
about life and yourself and challenges you. I cannot imagine doing anything else
and I don’t want to imagine it either.’
When asked about side hustles, his answer is simple: ‘No side hustles, real estate is
a full-time job. I plan to be the best agent in the country.’
THE CREATIVE WHO TURNED AGENT
Living in Glenvista, Jabulile Mazibuko grew up in Joburg South while attending St
Andrew’s School for Girls in Bedfordview.
‘My older brother and I were raised by my tough-as-nails mother who came from
a disadvantaged background, but she was determined to work hard to create a
good life for herself and her children.’
Thaba Trails and Kliprivier Nature Reserve are her favourite go-to spots and she
describes the South as an area with the best views of hills and mountain sites.
‘I love the down-to-earth energy of the people you find in the South. The community
is reasonably small, so eventually you get plugged into the community,
which is beautiful.’
Finding herself in real estate
Jabulile studied fine art throughout school and for a year at Rhodes University.
She always wanted to be an artist but then had a change of heart.
‘Art, however, is still one of my favourite hobbies.’
Soon after she acquired her interior decorating certificate and started working on
a few decorating jobs, she felt she needed a bigger challenge.
‘I feel like this career chose me. An advert for a real estate agent job popped up
on my timeline and I thought why not? I applied and was hired the following
week. I haven’t looked back since. I am certainly glad it chose me because I would
not have gravitated to it naturally.’
Although she feels she is an introvert at heart who prefers to be alone and in
small intimate places in her personal life, her job, however, forced her to be
more social.
‘When I am on the job I am very much an extrovert. I enjoy meeting different
people and engaging with them on various topics. My job entails me speaking to
people, both buyers and sellers, daily.
‘I have to constantly be on the lookout for new business while facilitating and
coordinating my pending transactions as well.’
Career-driven
‘As a company, we have a performance culture that values hard work. We recognise
that hard work is at the heart of every successful brand.
‘I am intrinsically motivated and have a deep desire to reach my full potential. I
am also blessed to be able to work with a very motivated team and I can draw
motivation and inspiration from my team as well.
‘Managing a deal from start to finish is something that requires being on top of
your game. This will ensure you will be able to foresee a problem before it occurs
and can therefore find ways to solve it.
‘You have to be the middleman between buyer and seller. As the agent, my job is
to make sure I manage this relationship and ensure both parties are happy
and comfortable.’
Jabulile explained tolerance is key and that you simply cannot take things
personally.
‘You meet all kinds of people from all walks of life and you need to be able to
respond accordingly. Part of this job is also about understanding how to read and
understand people so you can understand
their needs better to match
them to the right home.
‘And after all of this, handing over a
property and having satisfied clients
at the end of the transaction is always
the best feeling.’
Big deals and huge plans
For Jabulile, planning and scheduling
is critical in the business.
‘You are constantly juggling a lot
of balls and several things can fall
through the cracks. You have to be a
planner and run a tight schedule to
succeed in this industry.’
Her most expensive property sold is in
Eye of Africa for R5 799 000.
‘I took the buyers to view the house
and it was love at first sight.’
Any side hustles?
‘Real Estate is my only hustle. It is a
demanding job and to be the best
you need to give it 100% every day,
and that is my goal. I want to immerse
myself in as much real estate knowledge
as possible and continuously
refine my craft.
‘I am working towards acquiring my
PDE 4, and once I am a full status
agent I will be able to run my own
team. From there the sky is the limit.
‘I will choose this career again and
again. I love selling houses.’
PASSION IS THE SPICE OF LIFE
Ormonde resident Edgar Nche
was raised in Dube, Soweto, and
mostly attended schools in the north
of Johannesburg.
He is all about passion. He is passionate
about conversations and learning
from people, certainly passionate
about his job and what you would call
a passionate family man.
‘I am the only child of my mother, but
on my father’s side I have a younger
sister (Cynclaire) and a younger
brother (Lysander). I also have a cousin
(Tokelo aka Tk), whom I consider my
younger brother from my late aunt.
‘I am a big family man and I think that’s
where I draw most of my energy from
when I do get the chance to see them.
We are all a vibrant bunch and when
we’re all together it’s like we never lost
time but gain a lot of great memories
of happiness.’
Being more of an outdoors type of
guy, some of his favourite spots to visit
are Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve and
the North Cliff Eco Park, where he can
let go and be free to recharge.
Describing himself as a young, driven,
charismatic individual who has a lot to
offer the world, he loves to explore his
artistic side.
‘When I do get the chance, I tend to sharpen my drawing skills on my next art
piece. I love it.’
Matching character with his career
Being an extrovert who enjoys being around others, having great conversations,
laughing and loving happy environments, he thrives among people and takes
the opportunity to learn from people.
‘My passion for property developed quite early. I recall as a young boy playing
outside with friends and then always rushing home to be in front of the TV to
watch Top Billing. Seeing all the properties that were showcased enabled me to
see what job opportunities would match my character.
‘I enrolled myself into the One Learner programme in 2015, which was introduced
by the EAAB (Estate Agency Affairs Board) and SETA (Service Sector Education
and Training Authority).
‘From there, I decided to do more research and self-development programmes
while juggling my internship and varsity years, and here I am, constantly looking
for new business/opportunities every day. This includes sourcing new sellers
and buyers.
‘There is an endless list of what gives me job satisfaction. I enjoy meeting new
people and showing beautiful and amazing properties that have a different flair,
structures and architectural styles. The best satisfaction is the final key handover,
where I get to prepare awesome gifts and roll out amazing red carpets.’
The tougher side of the job, as he would describe it, is trying to make everyone
happy with the challenge of trying to close the gap between the buyers and
sellers and keeping the deal alive.
Inspired by people
Edgar explained the people he meets are what motivates him in his career.
‘The individuals you come across in this industry are highly motivating in their
own unique way. They have awesome life lessons to share and gift you with wisdom
to achieve success.’
The key to his success is understanding that people are different and that you
have to be sensitive to that during negotiations. To serve both parties, buyer and
seller, equally and fairly is a priority.
His most expensive property sold is a three-level house in Bassonia, which sold
for R3 750 000.
‘I had the opportunity to run with my mentors’ buyers who were looking in the
south of Johannesburg for over two months, in three different areas. We finally
found a property that had most of the qualities they were looking for.
Any side hustles?
‘No side hustles at present. For now, I need to strengthen my skills in and around
the real estate and property industry. I would like to be well-known in real estate
and, hopefully, later find myself back and forth closing deals in Cape Town too.’
And will he choose the same career again?
‘I would choose real estate again. I believe this is one of the careers that will teach
you more about yourself and life, as you are learning constantly. One should grab
as many opportunities as possible with zero limits but the limits you set
for yourself.’
BEHIND THE SCENES
Working behind the scenes as the production company for Listing Jozi are Nico
Nel and Trevor Kaplan from AlternaTV.
Nico grew up in Port Shepstone and moved to Pretoria after school to study
information design and as he said, ‘Fast forward through a few course changes
I eventually graduated with a BIS Publishing Degree at the University of Pretoria.’
His career in publishing started at Uppercase Media soon after obtaining
his degree.
‘From there I was hooked on the media industry that eventually saw me doing a
few years at MNet, more specifically looking after the marketing and PR requirements
for kykNet’s Afrikaans channels.
‘After my daughter and my new business, AlternaTV, was born, my wife and I
swopped the bustling city life in Randburg for scenic Meyersdal and have never
looked back. I guess we are back in a small town again.’
Trevor grew up in the north of Joburg and attended a boarding school in KZN,
while his wife grew up in the south
of Joburg. After getting married, they
moved to the South.
‘We love it here. It is a relatively small
community and it’s not uncommon
to bump into friends at local events
or shopping centres.’
About AlternaTV
Nico explained that with the rise of
digital media and content creation,
he wanted to pursue a more active
role behind the camera.
‘AlternaTV started as a 24/7 live
streaming platform with various
packages. Over the years we have
morphed into a bespoke video
production company specialising in
creating digital and television content
for some of SA’s biggest brands.
‘We’ve also helped produce other
local reality shows for other production
companies.
‘As founder of the company I basically
look after everything.’
Listing Jozi comes to life
Trevor said Listing Jozi was never a
planned project and when they met
up with an interesting person, who
happened to be a high-end reality
broker and chatted for a couple of
hours, the show idea started and
developed from there.
‘We are always looking for interesting
people and our paths crossed with
one of the cast members at the end
of 2019. We loved and latched onto
the idea to create a reality show featuring
some of Jozi’s most successful
and high-end real estate agents,‘
said Nico.
Owning the IP of the show and sourcing
their own funding, money was
probably their greatest obstacle.
‘Fortunately, we found an investor
and then it was just a question of
producing a great show, which we
believe we did, finding a distribution
agency and getting our show on the
right channel/platform, which we
found with BBC Lifestyle,’ Trevor said.
‘It was quite difficult to finalise the
cast. We were looking for agents with
a big high-end property portfolio,
willing and interesting clientele and a
strong on and off-screen personality
and story,’ Nico explained.
Covid and lockdown was a challenge
for the world, but it allowed them
to highlight how agents adapted to
a new way of marketing and selling
houses during the pandemic.
Sourcing the cast
They used word of mouth and industry contacts to help them meet and test
some of the agents on camera first.
‘We had to make sure the agents were comfortable on camera and with the way
we work and operate, so there was a period of trial and error before securing the
final five agents,’ said Nico.
‘The initial cast came from referrals, word of mouth, stalking Instagram and Facebook
profiles as well as trolling Google for the biggest agents,’ Trevor said.
Once they started shooting they realised certain cast members were not comfortable
on camera and then with some chopping and changing they settled
on what they call five amazing agents - each with their own stories and ambition
and personalities. Some of the agents are new to the game and some have
already made a lucrative career of selling property.
Where to now?
‘We are immensely proud of what we had achieved. We created this show out
of nothing during a time in our history where there were so many uncertainties,‘
Nico said.
‘We hope our agents become superstars after this. They all deserve it as they are
truly an inspiration when we witness their talents from behind the camera.’
‘I am extremely proud of the production and hope viewers will be able to identify
with the agents, and will enjoy being able to take a glimpse into the homes of
some of the super wealthy,’ added Trevor.
‘We are in the process of doing a pre-production on the first spin-off of Listing
Jozi namely Listing Cape Town, which we hope to get off the ground very soon,’
Trevor concluded.
Be sure to tune in to the premiere of Listing Jozi on June 16 at 20:00 on BBC Lifestyle
There are ten classics in the fashion world. Ten perfect items that defy trends.
bonus fashion points.
Worn by Everyone. In 1994, American Vogue declared ‘Ten out of ten women
have one, but ten out of ten want another because a little black dress leads the
best-rounded life’. The Supremes - Mary Wilson, Diana Ross and Florence Ballard -
rocked matching LBDs, Barbie had one in the early 60s, and Princess Diana made
a LBD central to the soap opera playing out inthe royal family ... remember The
Revenge Dress? Elizabeth Hurley - in the Versace LBD with safety pings and a tothe-thigh
How to wear it now Don’t see it as boring. Black is background, yes, but it’s
also the colour of chic, the colour of rebellion. Embrace those qualities -
whchever one appels to you. That is how you’ll find a LBD that pops when
you put it on. Jewellery is your friend. As the likes of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast
at Tiffany’s and Pricess Diana in 1994 attest, black looks great with sparkles.
This is not a time to go for subtle - go big or go home. Sunglasses also benefit
from this rule of thumb.
Bye-bye dry skin … Winter’s really never looked better
Winter plays a cruel game with our
skin. Dry skin. Chapped lips. And
a suddenly lacklustre complexion.
These are all part of the seasonal skin
switch that happens as the days get
shorter. But there is good news. A few
minor tweaks, not an entirely new set
of products, is all your skin needs to
attain a gorgeous glow. The experts
from Claire Hill shared some top tips
to keep your skin glowing throughout
Winter, and the rest of the year.
So I don’t need to change all my
skincare products for Winter? No, not
if you are using high-quality products.
They should keep your skin in tiptop
shape all year round. Your skin
needs the same thing throughout the
seasons – ingredients like hyaluronic
acid to boost the water content in your
skin cells significantly, and high-quality
moisturising ingredients such as
rosehip oil that prevent that precious
hydration from evaporating through
your skin. It’s as simple as that.
Do I need a specific eye product? Eye
gel is essential all year round. The eye
area is super delicate because it’s five
to 10 times thinner than on the rest of
your face, making it particularly prone
to dryness. It also has no sebaceous
(natural oil) glands, so it can’t naturally
regenerate any lost moisture. While
it’s tempting to slather on thicker
creams over Winter, moisturising
around eyes with a really rich product
is counterproductive as firstly it’s too
heavy for that delicate area, it can clog
the skin, causing milia (small white
lumps) and puffiness. You need a light
gel that sinks in fast and hydrates with
powerful ingredients that penetrate
the deeper layers of the skin.
WPC Eye Complex is a gentle yet
powerful corrective treatment
to revitalise the delicate
skin around your eyes. The
youth-reviving actives in this
luxuriously silky eye gel reduce
puffiness and inflammation,
lighten dark circles, and smooth
away fine lines and wrinkles
to reveal fresher, brighter,
younger-looking eyes. R1865
But what to do if my skin is drier during Winter? Layer up. Layering involves
applying your skincare products in a particular order (this is good advice
throughout the year!). The lighter product (think serum) should be applied first
as it’s designed to penetrate your skin’s more profound levels. Then follow with a
moisturiser that locks in the benefits of the serum and prevents the dry Winter air
from sucking the much-needed hydration straight back out of your skin. If your
skin does begin to feel tight, a few drops of light face oil over the top of your
moisturiser will protect it against environmental aggressors to keep your skin
feeling soft and your complexion glowing.
Can I use the same cleanser as in
Summer? A good cleanser will serve
you just as well in Winter as in the
warmer months. Your best option is
a cleansing pad soaked in micellar
water – it will gently sweep away the
daily grime without stripping the
skin of its natural oils. You’ll not only
remove every skerrick of makeup, but
you’ll also give the skin a good boost
of soothing, repairing antioxidants.
If you find that new sunspots have
popped up after summer, choose
micellar water with a melanin
modulating active, which directly
targets brown spots and age spots.
What else can I do to prevent dry
Winter skin? Tempting as it might be,
don’t turn the heat up. Dry air will suck
the moisture out of your skin, whether
outside or under the blankets. Many
Winter lifestyle habits can harm our
skin. We spend less time outdoors
(hello vitamin D!), we often avoid
exercise, and we eat more decadent
foods to boot. The effect is tangible
… a sluggish inner equals a sluggish
outer. Keep up your Summer routine –
go for walks, drink plenty of water, and
nourish your skin with the same gentle
but effective products year-round, and
you’ll cruise through a cold snap.
Will moisture keep crows feet at bay? Honestly, a good eye gel should do
more than add moisture. The skin around your eyes also needs a decent vitamin
A dose to help strengthen the skin and slow the breakdown of collagen and
elastin (that’s what keeps your skin bouncy and stretchy). Retinol is the traditional
form of vitamin A for skincare. Today, we now have much gentler, plant-based
alternatives such as Stevie (from the stevia plant), which has the same skinrejuvenating
effect without causing any retinol-like irritation.
Investing in your skin’s never been easier
A trio of Claire Hill beauties
To set the stage for skin to repair damage from
sun exposure, environmental toxins, and promote
cellular repair, you need to effectively remove
all makeup, thick sunscreen, and any impurities
that can clog pores. Claire Hill’s Micellar Water
contains tiny oil droplets (micelles) which attract
and bind to makeup, sunscreen and grime so that
all can be effortlessly removed from your face with
a simple swipe. It’s also terrific for those struggling
with hyper-pigmentation and an uneven skin
tone. R600. • Claire Hill’s Anti-Ageing Serum is a
wonderful skin-firming and rejuvenating serum
that targets the sagging skin around your jawline
as well as the vertical laugh lines that extend
from the sides of your nose curving around to
your mouth. Supercharged with nutrients and
powerful actives, this luxe, fast-absorbing serum
revitalises your complexion so that your skin looks
naturally younger in a matter of weeks. R1100. •
Follow up with Anti-Ageing Moisturiser – a noninvasive
alternative to injectables. This nourishing
moisturiser has the power to smooth away fine
lines by naturally relaxing the facial muscles and
eliminating excess skin tension. Luxurious and
rich in natural oils, it also helps to replace and
retain moisture, fight free radical damage and feed
the skin with radiance-reviving nutrients. R1475.
NeoStrata … your skin will thank you!
We’re massive NeoStrata fans, so when we heard about the new NeoStrata
Resurface Glycolic Renewal Serum, our skin did a quick little jump for joy. You
probably know glycolic acid is known to be the workhorse of the alpha-hydroxy acid
(AHA) family, which is what those looking to really retexture and refine their skin’s
surface need. It’s the key ingredient in this new serum, which speeds up cell turnover
rate and visibly improves skin radiance, texture, and tone. There are also ingredients
to exfoliate, and an antioxidant that helps prevent and reverse the appearance of fine
lines and wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, enlarged pores, and roughness. Why use it?
It targets a smoother, radiant complexion, has a high potency AHA-antioxidant blend,
and is formulated for improved overall skin quality. Tip: You may have initial flaking,
tingling, or irritation to the skin (for some, this may be part of the normal resurfacing
process), which generally improves as the skin gets used to the treatment. And it
could increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun and particularly the possibility of
sunburn. Use sunscreen and limit sun exposure while using this product and for
a week afterwards. R830. Visit NeoStrata.co.za for your closest stockist. And while
you’re there, three more products worth looking at are from the Neostrata Correct
What do teens want?
PROMOTION
GREAT LOOKING SKIN
And they can, with RITES, a fuss-free, local brand that’s perfect for boys and girls
Prevention’s better than cure
Rather than trying to cure acne, teens should rather
preempt it ... starting a skincare routine early to prevent
acne and blemishes. RITES is a small, easy-to-use South
African brand, which is cruelty-free and is brilliant for
boys and girls.
Your 10 minute RITES routine
Being a teenager can be stressful, so the last thing you need
to be worrying about is your skincare regime. To save you the
hassle, RITES has put together the ultimate 10-minute routine
to combat everything from pimples to oiliness. All you need
is five minutes in the morning and five minutes again in the
evening to marvel at your skin! Ready. Set. Go!
Cleanse and Exfoliate: 1 minute
Start your routine off by cleansing and exfoliating your
skin. Gently massage the Foam Fighter foaming face
wash over your skin. It is the ultimate daily face wash that
fights to remove impurities while leaving your skin feeling
fresh, renewed, and matte. You can also combine the
Power Powder exfoliating powder to gently buff away the
unhealthy cells for a noticeably smoother, clearer, and more
refined complexion.
5
Great skin ... in five easy steps
Cleanse carefully. At least twice a day.
Wash off make-up before bed. Allow your skin
to breathe at night without clogging your pores.
Control oil. Even if your skin is oily, you still
need to moisturise. Think hydration rather than
excessive oil production.
Exfoliate. You need to exfoliate once or twice
a week with a gentle, oil-free exfoliator.
Keep your hands clean. Every time you touch
your face, you are spreading oil, dirt, and
bacteria that can turn into a breakout! Always
wash your hands before touching your face
and regularly clean and disinfect surfaces that
touch your face, like your phone!
Treat: 3 minutes
Next, you will tone the skin with our refreshing toning
wipes. The Fresh Crusader wipes provide intensive
cleaning for problem areas such as the pesky T-zone.
Infused with witch hazel, cucumber and aloe vera, these
wipes help to unclog the pores and provide hydration in
one simple swipe. After toning, apply Disappearing Act
to specific problem areas and allow time for the product
to penetrate the skin. It has been designed to remove
excess oil and bacteria, while using natural elements to
reduce inflammation.
Moisturise and Protect: 1 minute
Whether you are off to school, or getting ready to hit the
sheets, you will want to make sure your face is moisturised.
In the morning, use RITES Control Freak SPF30 to
moisturise and protect the skin. At night, use the Smart
Hydrator to repair your skin while you sleep. Be sure to
apply the moisturiser to the face and neck, starting on the
cheeks and spreading outwards and upwards, and if you are
fast, then you may just have a few seconds to spare!
Get into the habit of following the above steps each day for
a solid and effective skincare routine.
Wine for the win
Soup + red wine = a match made in Winter heaven
Nothing chases away the mid-Winter chill like a big bowl of soul-warming
soup. And for the ultimate comfort food and wine experience, enjoy
Roodeberg 1949 with foodie Elmarie Berry’s hearty lentil and lamb soup,
guaranteed to warm you on even the chilliest of days.
The wine: Embracing the revival of exciting French and Spanish varieties,
Cabernet Sauvignon forms the foundation of this Roodeberg 1949
blend, complemented by Tempranillo, Carignan and Carménère. It’s
a gorgeous, generous wine. You’ll smell dark cherry, blackcurrant and
vanilla, you’ll taste cinnamon, sweet spice and ripe, juicy dark berry fruit.
The soup: All it takes to make this flavourful lentil and lamb soup are a
handful of healthy ingredients and a few easy steps. This recipe easily
serves eight.
You’ll need: 2 Tbsp olive oil; 2 large brown onions, coarsely chopped; 2
celery sticks, trimmed, coarsely chopped; 1 large carrot, peeled, coarsely
chopped; 900g lamb, cut into 3cm pieces; 400g can diced tomatoes; 1L
(4 cups) liquid chicken stock or liquid vegetable stock; 400g can brown
lentils, rinsed, drained; fresh coriander to garnish
To make: Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Sauté
the onion, stirring for two minutes. Add the celery and carrot, stirring for
three to four minutes or until the vegetables are light golden.
Add the lamb, stirring for two to three minutes or until just browned.
Add the tomato and stock. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low. Cover
and simmer for an hour, until lamb is tender. Add the lentils, cover and
simmer for another 15 minutes. Ladle into serving bowls and garnish
with fresh coriander and some lovely fresh, crusty bread.
Curried is a joyful homage to one of the world’s most beloved and
of the slow-cooked Cape Malay curries of her childhood, as well as the
fast-paced landscape of the Middle East, where she now lives, Cariema
celebrates the nourishing comfort of pulses and legumes in a multitude
of wholesome and delicious vegetarian curries for everyday cooking. For
special occasions, there are meat and seafood curries from around the
globe. Rice and condiments are not overlooked, and there is also a
selection of breads, as well as delectable desserts. On our shopping list
are the ingredients for the dal and beetroot curried stew, ( rich in colour,
it looks almost too good to eat), the Sunday curried roast chicken (to
ADVERTORIAL
AVO-licious
winter goodness
Celebrate the 2021 avo season by adding an
avo (or two) to your family’s winter meals.
There are the buttery, creamy, green-skinned avo
varieties … Fuerte, Edranol, Ryan, Reed and Pinkerton.
And then there’s the rich, nutty, dark-skinned Hass,
Maluma Hass and Lamb Hass. It’s hard to choose a
favourite, but we don’t have to. While we love the fact
that South African avos are available almost all year
round, we’re fortunate they are in plentiful supply in
winter. Why? Well, besides tasting heavenly, they may offer
immune support in the colder months. Did you know avos
are high in copper, a source of fibre (5.3g fibre per 100g) and
contain antioxidants? Copper is known to support immune
system function. Fibre is essential for good gut health …
around 65% of the immune system is housed in the gut, which
regulates immunity and helps to protect against invading
pathogens that cause disease. Antioxidants are powerful food
components that maintain and regulate immune function, and
avos contain the antioxidant nutrients lycopene and
beta-carotene. So not only are avos delicious, they’re also a
source of nutrients, and they’re versatile and super quick and
easy to add to almost any meal.
TIKTOK BAKED FETA PASTA WITH AVOCADO
Serves 4
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 45 minutes
Ingredients:
1 large or 2 small avocados; 50g assorted cocktail
tomatoes; 4 garlic cloves, crushed; 150ml
avocado oil or extra-virgin olive oil, divided in
half; sea salt and freshly ground black pepper;
1 block (approximately 200g) Greek feta cheese;
½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional);
300g dried pasta, medium-size shape; fresh basil
leaves, for serving.
Method:
Preheat the oven to 200°C. In a baking dish,
combine half the oil, tomatoes, garlic and
seasoning and toss to coat. Place the block of
feta in the centre of the dish and sprinkle with
chilli flakes, if using. Bake in preheated oven for
40 minutes, until the tomatoes burst and the feta
is golden brown.
While the tomato is cooking, boil the pasta in
salted water until al dente, drain and set aside.
Peel and dice the avocado.
Remove tomatoes and feta from the oven, toss
with the pasta and diced avocado and
drizzle with the remaining oil.
is protected from frost. As a garden plant, it needs frost protection and
if planted now will provide Spring into Summer colour. It tolerates heat,
grows in ordinary garden soil that drains well and likes regular, but not
excessive watering. Its wide range of colours makes it easy to add to any
garden colour scheme. Also resistant to powdery mildew. New colours
include ‘Blue Fizz’ and ‘Violet Wink’. Details: ballstraathof.co.za
Indoor plant of the month
Peperomia ‘watermelon’ is a striking little plant with large, fleshy leaves that look like
the rind of a watermelon. Even when fully grown, it is compact and bushy, fitting
easily on a bookcase, desktop, windowsill or wherever its unusual leaves can be
appreciated. This is a good plant for a beginner, as it is easy to care for. It just needs
enough bright light and no over watering. Details: lvgplants.co.za
Garden tasks for July
• Prune bush roses from 20 July to
the first week in August. Cut back
bushes by one-third, removing
dead wood and old stems, crisscrossing
and weak growth. Enrich
the soil after pruning with compost,
fertilise and water well.
• In dry areas, water the compost
heap once a month to keep it active.
• Fertilise pansies, violas, petunias,
and primulas to keep
them flowering.
• Water veggies once a week and feed
once a month with a liquid fertiliser.
• Cover tender plants with frost cloth
if very cold weather is predicted.
• Water vegetables and herbs in
containers twice a week.
• Continue to protect conifers from
the Italian cypress aphid with an
organic insecticide or use insecticide
granules sprinkled around the base
of the conifer.
Veggie of the month
There is nothing sweeter than eating garden peas
from the pod. ‘Tom Thumb’ is a dwarf bush pea from
RAW seeds that is fun for the kids to plant in
containers or small spaces.
Plants grow 30cm high and
10cm wide, which means
that you can plant them
10cm apart along a mini
trellis. Pods are best when
harvested young, within 50
days from germination. The
peas are sweet and crunchy.
TIPS FOR GARDEN PEAS
• Grow in full sun. • Plant in
fertile, compost-enriched soil
or potting soil. • Keep the soil
moist, especially for plants
in containers. • Fertilise once
a month. • Keep on picking,
especially to encourage new
pods. Details: rawliving.co.za
Let your boots do the talking
Let’s face it, lockdown regulations are not going to ease up soon and travelling abroad is
out of the question. So you may as well get out your hiking gear and enjoy nature.
Text: LEBOGANG SEKGWAMA. Photo: CLAYTON WARREN.
Michael Waters, Richard Lewarne, Megan Evans and Clayton Warren take
in the breathtaking views of a sunrise over the valley from the top of the
Amphitheatre.
Get It caught up with Delville’s First Germiston Scouts leaders to share their experience
after they journeyed on a two-day overnight hike on the Northern Drakensberg
mountains to the Tugela Falls.
Clayton Warren, the district commissioner of the Eland District, shared more on
how the hike went.
‘We started at the Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge and hiked up to the Sentinel Car
Park and then on to the Chain Ladders before ascending to the Amphitheatre and
crossing to the Tugela Falls. It was fairly windy on both days, and as the sun sets it
got quite chilly too, hence it’s important to be prepared for all weather conditions
when hiking in the Drakensberg.’
Candice Warren from the First Germiston Scouts group was part of the hiking party
and said hiking on the Drakensberg was on her bucket list for years.
‘Experiencing the Amphitheatre in person was far more beautiful than I could have
imagined. This was an incredible experience and I’d recommend it to anyone.’
Breathtaking views
‘We started hiking just after 9am on Saturday and reached the edge of the Tugela
Falls around 5pm. It was a good eight-hour walk with lots of stopping in between
to soak up the beautiful views,’ said Clayton.
Justice Kgomo said it was his first time in the Drakensberg and it was amazing.
‘The chain ladders were an experience of a lifetime, as I’m afraid of heights. The
route is a bit of a stretch for first-time hikers but the view it comes with gives you an
incredible feeling you want to share with others.’
For Michael Waters, it was simply an amazing experience.
‘The views were spectacular and the company even better, we got to know each
other as a group. At the end of the day, there was a real sense of pride sitting at the
edge of the falls looking out over the valley below.’
USEFUL TIPS
What to pack for a hike
‘When hiking in the Drakensberg be
prepared for all kinds of weather. It
can be full sun and 30+ degrees and
within 30 minutes be raining and
windy and below 10 degrees,’
said Clayton.
1. Always pack wet weather gear and
a warm jacket even if hiking for just
a day.
2. Ensure you have comfortable
shoes with good ankle support and
a wide brim hat.
3. Carry a minimum of 500ml of water
per hour that you will be walking
and find out if the water in the area
is safe to drink in case you run out.
4. Sunscreen lotion with a decent
SPF is a must.
Hiking tips for injuries
Clayton said the most common injury
on hikes is ankle injuries, usually
due to wearing the incorrect shoes.
1. Firstly, never remove the shoe
because it’s compressing the ankle
and will help with the swelling.
2. Depending on how far you need
to walk, you could stabilise the ankle
to prevent further movement
and discomfort.
3. Get medical assistance as quickly
as possible.
4. In the case of severe injuries
where the person cannot be moved,
especially head, neck or back injuries
it is always best to just call the
Mountain Club (061 461 8259).
5. Keep the patient calm and reassured
while waiting for rescue.
6. Another very important note on
hiking is The Buddy System, no matter
how experienced you are, you
should never hike alone, no matter
how short, how well known the
route, if you trip and are injured
if you have no buddy there to
help things can rapidly become
quite dangerous.
Fancy a weekend away ... without the long drive?
African Pride Irene Country Lodge is almost on
your doorstep - a tranquil destination with a rustic
farm feel, the ideal place to recharge. Here are five
(excellent) reasons why you should visit.
ADVERTORIAL
ESCAPE TO THE COUNTRY
without the long drive!
Driving down the long and winding oak-lined lane leading up
to African Pride Irene Country Lodge, you’ll feel like you’re being
transported to another world. The scenery is so pretty and peaceful
that you know you’ve left the city, and all the stress city-life brings,
behind. Here are our top five reasons why you have to visit:
1. It’s perfect for romance. The stylish, spacious and luxurious
rooms each open onto a private patio or balcony … either with
a gorgeous lakeside view or lush meadows from the Camdeboo
Forest (giving you all the privacy you want).
2. The Meadow Green Restaurant. The fresh, crisp, elegant interior
invites you to settle down and relax for a dining experience to
remember. The à la carte menu caters for a casual lunch or a
sophisticated dinner ... and the food is really exceptional. The
portions are generous, the food tasty and well-presented, the
service discrete but attentive. It’s worth knowing that they are
famous for serving one of the best breakfasts around, with
everything on offer from home-baked pastries to fresh fruit.
3. Then there is the gorgeous lounge-style River Bar. Overlooking
the lakeside with never-ending views and gorgeous sunsets that
rival most paintings, there is a mixologist cocktail menu and lovely
tapas style food.
4. It’s a great destination for an adventure-loving family. Have the
kids with you and feel like exploring? Then head over to Irene
Farm via the underground subway to learn more about the
history and the workings of the farm and look for an abundance
of farm-fresh delicacies at the shop. Go for a self-guided bird (and/
or tree) spotting walk or take a leisurely stroll (running or cycling
are also allowed for the fitness fanatics) on the adventure bush
trail. If doing as little as possible is on your to-do list, then enjoy an
in-room movie, complete with popcorn, snacks and a milkshake.
Relax with a marvellous picnic on their lush lawns under a huge
oak tree, go for a craft beer, wine, gin or milkshake tasting or, the
ultimate spoil … S’mores making at the fire pit (the kids will love
you madly!).
5. The (swoon) Spa. The only thing that could make your stay
even more relaxing would be paying a visit to the multi-award
winning Camdeboo Day Spa. You can choose from an array of
treatments and experiences designed to help you unwind and
feel completely refreshed.
So … to say that this luxury upmarket hotel is nice would be an
understatement, it’s magnificent! There is so much to do, see and
experience, you return again and again.
relax and revive the senses.
With gorgeous gardens, a wooden jungle gym and tractors
around every corner, a visit to the Irene Farm is a must.
The Onyx ... a gem in the city
A Cape escape is always a treat. And even more so when you choose a city-chic hotel.
We’ve just spent a week in Cape Town
… and struggle to understand why
anyone would want to travel abroad
when there’s such an incredible
destination right here in our own
country. It’s a spot that – no matter
how many times you visit – simply
never gets stale.
The basics stay the same … ‘the
mountain’ (only ever said with that
iconic Capetonian drawl), the buzz
along the Camps Bay restaurant
strip, the icy sea only fools and
born-locals enjoy (then again, maybe
we should take a lesson from them
… a 15-minute cold-water swim
apparently has massive health
benefits – from increasing your
metabolism, helping with circulation,
relieving stress, enhancing your
mood, boosting your immune system
and helping you to sleep better).
But once you’ve done the 15 minutes
of hell in the cold water, the cable car,
tried tandem paragliding off Signal
Hill and Lion’s Head, and kayaked
along the coastline looking for
dolphins, there’s always something
new to discover and explore. And it’s
one of the only major cities – if not
the only city – in SA where staying
in the centre of town is not only safe
but also massively desirable. This is
why we booked into, and loved, The
Onyx Hotel.
This cosmopolitan blend of hotel
and residential accommodation sits
proudly on Heerengracht Street, Cape
Town’s oldest thoroughfare, and with
its bold, architectural features and
resemblance to the rare, striking black
sapphire, it’s a real gem … offering
a chic city on par with apartment
offerings around the globe but infused
with authentic South African vibrancy
and authenticity.
What’s there to love? What’s not to?
The rooms are large, spacious and
edgy … with everything you need
to make your stay as enjoyable as
possible. The location is spot on …
it’s on Cape Town’s Foreshore, so
right in the hub of the city’s dynamic
urban lifestyle. There are bright lights
and city vibes, great restaurants on
every corner and bustling bars. Not
that you have to leave the hotel to
find a place to play. The hotel’s YU
Restaurant and Bar on the 4th floor
mixes up Insta-ready cocktails – the
Africa Rising City of Gold cocktail with
its candyfloss and sexy molten gold
surface is particularly photogenic.
Sexy city living … a blend of hotel
and apartments to suit all lifestyles.
You’re in Cape Town … a mountain
view is non-negotiable!
Don’t venture any further for dinner either
… there’s an exotic menu of Asian-style
tapas served with a side of a fabulous
cityscape view.
The hedonistic traveller looking for some
pampering can book an hour or so in the
Sanctuary Spa at The Onyx. Ask, when
you’re there, which packages are on
special … they’re always a treat (and a
well-priced one). Book a massage, order
a bottle of bubbly … and, after your
treatment, relax at the indoor-outdoor
heated pool. Bliss.
For out-of-towners wanting to explore
more of the wine and brandy options
in the winelands, The Onyx’s concierge
team has teamed up with Ilios Tours
and can create individualised day-trip
itineraries. Think a fascinating visit to Van
Ryn’s Distillery in Stellenbosch, KWV’s
House of Fire in Paarl and Oude Molen
Distillery in the Elgin Valley, or a wine
tasting and lunch at the many heritage
wine estates that the Cape has to offer,
including Simonsig.
If a Cape break appeals, The Onyx always
has winter packages and promotions
worth exploring … and the hotel works
equally well for business and leisure
travellers, for singles, couples and families.
