“And the world is passing away along with its desires,
but who ever does the will of God abides forever.”
—1 JOHN 2:17
ionel Anthony “Toney” Johnson, Jr. was born June 27, 1959 in Winnsboro, SC.
He was the joyous son of Wilhelmina Prince Johnson and the late Lionel
Andrew Johnson, Sr.
Lionel was a proud graduate of Mayo High School, class of 1977. He went from
being a Golden Bear to a Bulldog when he attended South Carolina State College.
In both settings he entertained and delighted many with his musical stylings as he
excelled in singing, playing the piano and the saxophone.
Lionel served in the United States Marine Corps which afforded him the opportunity
to travel to Okinawa, Japan. The happiness he brought people then became
global.
Lionel never forgot a name. One introduction was all he needed and you were in
his memory for life. His jubilant personality made him a joy to be around (unless
you were his little sister who he teased all the time).
Lionel’s spiritual walk began in St. James United Methodist Church, where he
enjoyed singing on the children’s and youth choirs. He later joined Pentecostal
United Church of Christ, Apostolic Inc. where he forged long term friendships
that continued to flourish until his passing.
Toney, as he’s called by his family, leaves behind to cherish his memory his dear
mother, Wilhelmina Prince Johnson of Darlington; a brother, Phillip Michael
Johnson of Darlington; two beloved sisters, Angela Grace Johnson of Columbia,
and Dr. Iris Johnson Arnold of Nashville, TN; a much beloved brother-in-love,
Robert Arnold of Nashville TN; two loving nieces, Ariel Shaw and Autumn Marshae
Arnold; a darling great niece, Selah Lewis; an uncle, Phillip Gowain Johnson
of Madisonville, KY; an aunt, Jessie Nickerson of Irvington, NJ; and a host of
cousins.
Toney was preceded in death by his father, Lionel Andrew Johnson, Sr.; and his
infant brother, Robin Eric.
Toney enjoyed his last days in the Carlyle Senior Care nursing home in Aiken,
where he made his presence known and was loved by staff and residents.
