“PIMPLES“ ON THE PENIS

Most men are shocked when they see their “pearly
penile papules” (or PPP) for the first time. The small
skin structures on the edge of the penis tip look like
warts and are often confused with them. Many of
those affected even worry it might be a sexually
transmitted disease.
“In fact, these
small bumps
are completely
harmless,” says
the Hamburg dermatologist
and specialist
in aesthetic surgery,
Dr. Welf Prager. “But they
look ugly. This often becomes a
problem with sex. You don’t want to show
something like that to your partner.”
The millimeter-small papules, whitish or
skin-coloured, appear one day at the edge of
the glans in around 10-20% of men and can
spread around the entire penis up to the glans
ligament. Why some men get it and others
don’t is genetic. “You can hardly distinguish
PPP from contagious genital warts,” says
Dr. Prager. “To be on the safe side, I advise
having a dermatologist clarify this.”
With modern methods, PPP can be removed
quickly and easily. Dr. Prager uses a combination
of laser and radio frequency therapy
for this. “Only through targeted and gentle
obliteration with the laser plus the destruction
of the deeper tissue by the so-called radio frequency
is it possible to remove PPP effectively
and, above all, permanently,” explains the
specialist. “We can also prevent scarring and
sensory disorders.” Local anesthesia using a
cream is sufficient for the treatment. It usually
takes 10-15 minutes to complete. Immediately
afterwards you can leave the practice
