Our annual publication for
everyone living and working
in the area normally appears
in March, but was knocked a
little off course this year by
the coronavirus pandemic.
Now, like so many other
local businesses and
activities, we are back on
track and delighted to
deliver this Guide to 15,500
addresses in south Sheffield.
And as we all strive to
return to something approaching normality, we really are so
fortunate living where we do, not only for our open spaces and close
proximity to the countryside, but for the sheer number of activities
we can all join in with - whatever the weather.

Welcome to this 2021 Guide to S8
Sheffield Heeley MP Louise Haigh offers an
introduction to this publication and a reminder that
we have many excellent facilities on our doorsteps
T
HE past 12 months have caused immense upheaval in all of
our lives but, in the past few weeks, it's been heartening to
see life slowly returning to the streets, pubs and parks of the
Active8 area.
The way that our community came together during a uniquely
difficult period has been touching to witness.
Thank you to everyone who supported neighbours, donated to food
banks, volunteered at vaccination centres, and abided by Government
guidance. Your work and sacrifice saved lives.
After an incredibly tough winter, we now have the chance to
rediscover S8 and everything it has to offer.
We're really fortunate that our area hosts a range of wonderful
independent cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops. I know that we all
want to see our local businesses prosper after lockdown hit them
hard.
Now, as restrictions are eased, please do support our fantastic
independent traders as much as possible.
In S8, we also have beautiful parks and other outdoor spaces for us all
to enjoy. Having Graves Park and Meersbook Park on our doorsteps really
is a blessing and, as social distancing measures are reduced and the
warm weather arrives, let's make the most of these fantastic public
spaces.
Thank you to all those businesses and community groups that help to
make S8 a special place. The pages of this 2021 Guide to S8 should
provide lots of inspiration to keep us all occupied in the weeks and
months ahead.

Don’t forget your toothbrush
THE team at H2O Bathroom Solutions have used all their flair and knowhow
to create a spectacular future-proof bathroom at a period home in
Sheffield suburb Beauchief.
H2O handled all elements of the project, from design through to completion, with the
brief of a luxury bathroom which makes the absolute most of available space while
offering easy access and maintenance.
Happy client Marcia Burke explained how she found her way to H2O via the pages of
this magazine. The initial customer service and quote she received stood out from other
companies she approached.
“I didn’t have to think about the decision,” she said.
“For the design, Martin came up with lots of ideas and we sort of worked through it all
together. He made the process very easy.”
Fortunately, H2O had a slot in their diary that would allow the work to be completed
by Christmas, and the timing was perfect as Marcia was preparing to retire.
H2O have installed a stylish walk-in shower while also retaining a bath thanks to its
space-saving properties.
Other standout features include a touch-operated LED mirror with ambient lighting
effects, a tall open-ended towel rail and a neat electric toothbrush holder and charger
affixed to the wall.
An understated grab-rail has also been installed inside the
shower with the option of adding a pull-down seat if required in
future.
The old bathroom in the three-bedroom semi had been in situ
for many years and, although the new fixtures and fittings
adhere to the original, workable, layout, the consensus is that
the room looks so much bigger.
Marcia said: “It was a big job but I absolutely love what H2O
have done. Everything is so easy to keep clean, in fact it never
looks dirty at all!
“H2O managed everything, including the flooring which I
sourced and selected from another supplier.
“I would recommend the company to anyone – I’m so
pleased.”

IT’S always pleasant to receive a ‘thank you’ for a job well done.
After local experts A61 Bathrooms had completed a new bathroom at
David and Joyce Stephens’ home in Norton Lees, David was straight on the
phone to owner Craig.
David said: “I rang Craig up to tell him it was a superb job. We’re so
pleased. We cannot fault it.”

Bathrooms’ base on Chesterfield Road, Woodseats, many times and decided
they would call to discuss their requirements.
The time had definitely come to replace the bathroom they inherited when
they moved in to their period semi-detached house 12 years ago.
Not only were fixtures and fittings becoming tatty, like many older clients,
the couple wanted a walk-in shower rather than the existing bath with a
shower overhead.
The Stephens found Craig to be both
agreeable and knowledgeable and the quote
provided was in line with their budget.
They were also pleased to be offered an
alternative to wall tiles in the form of durable
and easy maintenance Reef panelling.
Fitters David and James stripped everything back, before expertly installing the
roomy walk-in shower and modern white suite, with toilet, wash basin and vanity
unit. Other elements include a towel rail and extractor fan.
David said he was impressed not only with the finish of the job but also the careful
attention to detail, right down to the positioning and sizing of the towel rail and
installation of non-slip flooring.
He said: “If you look in this corner or that, even where it is difficult to reach,
everything is perfectly done. A61 were very professional.”
The couple also appreciated efforts made over the five-day installation work to
ensure minimal disruption, as the bathroom is the only one in the house.

Digging in to meet food demand

OODSEATS Allotment Society held their latest pop-up
shop on Abbey Lane, raising more than £1,200 for
good causes.
Organisers were thrilled with the resounding success of the
event, despite covid restrictions and cold weather.
Inge Hunt said: “Locals flocked to buy all manner of cakes,
buns, biscuits, freshly-cut rhubarb, bedding plants, vegetable
plants, perennials, herbs and seeds.
“We also introduced a number of craft items made by members,
comprising cards, lavender bags, key rings, crochet plant holders
and baby hats, as well as a wide selection of home made preserves.
“Buying started even as we were setting up and continued until we
were almost sold out. People were so pleased to see us back and
asked why we were not there every week!
“Thanks to our local community who turned out in the cold to buy
from us and obviously a really big thank you to all our members
who grew, made , crafted, donated and helped before and on the
day.
“Profits are promised this year to a split between our society
funds as last year and the other half to nominated local charities.
Members are currently voting online to decide which three charities
from a local list and we will publicise these at the next shop.”
The society is planning another five pop-up shops in the near
future and continue to donate excess fresh produce grown
throughout the summer to Foodworks - a Sheffield based charity
supplying meals and food to those in need.
Inge added: “To this end, we have also launched our own' Grow A
Row’ appeal to all of our members.
“This is designed to encourage everyone on an allotment or in their
gardens, to grow an extra row of something that we can either
donate to the foodbank or sell at our pop-up shops so that we are
all doing an extra bit for charity in these troubling times.
“Allotment gardeners are only too used to the conundrum of
having gluts of various standard crops—usually runner beans,
rhubarb, potatoes, onions, courgettes and fruit, so donating with a
view to also growing something more unusual this year, will be a
challenge that we will enjoy meeting.”

bike ride in aid

EAUCHIEF’S John Oakley, who plays for the Sheffield
Steelkings Para Ice Hockey Club, is on his way to
completing a 1,500km virtual bike ride - dressed as the
club’s mascot Rusty!
John is pedalling the equivalent of going from Land’s End to
John o’ Groats on a route that would bring him through Sheffield.
The Sheffield Steelkings are Britain's largest para ice hockey
club with two teams in the British Para Ice Hockey League.
Para ice hockey is a sport designed for people with lower-body
disabilities and impairments but the club welcomes male and
female, able-bodied and disabled players from all backgrounds.
John said: “Because I run a business and undertake a
considerable amount of charity work, the bulk of the pedalling has
been done at weekends, as well as between 9.30pm and midnight,
but I gradually totted up the kilometres using various waypoints
which I used as smaller targets.
“The cost of equipment for getting a new player onto the ice is
approximately £1,000 and that is the target I set for this
challenge. All donations are welcome, however large or small
and, if my target is reached, we will be able to help a disabled
person to participate in para ice hockey.”
Once he has completed the challenge, John is hoping to have a
street party to celebrate the further easing of lockdown
restrictions and incorporate some fundraising.

CTIVE8 area people have been getting closer to
nature to aid their well-being.
The Terminus Initiative’s ‘Love Nature’ sessions at Lowedges
were led by horticultural therapist Caroline Cook.
TTI’s health improvement manager, Joy Arnott, explained the
sessions started last November but had to go online for a while
due to coronavirus restrictions. However, participants were able to
get out and about again as restrictions eased, of course still in
line with covid-19 safety.
Joy said: “Participants joined a slow walk around the park,
stopping to have a short talk or activity several times along
the way. They are encouraged to shift the focus from their own
problems or worries and focus on the surroundings.

Into the fold of publishing

LOCAL origami expert began publishing his own books
during lockdown
Nick Robinson, a leading artist and teacher in the art of paperfolding,
saw much of his regular work dry up during the pandemic.
With over 86 books on origami already to his name, he decided to
take the opportunity to self-publish under the PicklePress brand.
Pickle is Nick's lovable rescue cat who survived a house fire.
Nick's first independent book, 'Origami With Love', features hearts
and other designs for anyone who has a romantic streak. This has
already been translated into French for a shop in Paris, as well as
into German.
The second book 'Origami In Motion' is a collection of models that
hop, jump, squawk, fly and move in other ways.
Nick, a fantasy fan, is also pleased to be working on a commission
for Warner Brothers to produce a book featuring the characters of J
K Rowling's Harry Potter series - 'From the Films of Harry Potter,
Origami, Volume 2.' It will be released in the autumn and
distributed worldwide.
Nick, of Norton Lees, said taking complete control of his own
books, from start to finish, had been at the back of his mind for a
while and it seemed the right time to establish PicklePress. As print
runs are small, the titles are available as bespoke prints for gifts or
corporate customers.
He describes origami as the "perfect Yorkshire hobby" as it's
cheap - but it's also extremely satisfying.
Nick took up paper-folding back in 1982 and joined the British
Origami Society in 1984, turning professional in 1987. He has
created several hundred original designs, as well as given extensive
demonstrations and lessons around the world.
There has been a recent upsurge in people taking up the creative
practice.

Nick said: "I'm currently president of the British Origami Society.
We have had enormous interest over the past 18 months as people
have been looking for something to do. Origami has always been
popular with children but increasingly adults are enjoying it too.
"The quality of instructions has improved so much in recent years
that almost anyone can follow them," added Nick.
Nick is also a musician, playing guitar and keyboard. He is a
member of three-piece band Das Rad, with Martin Archer and Steve
Dinsdale, which has been enjoying success with two albums, along
with musical outfit Mithril, where he plays acoustic guitar and is
joined by two vocalists.

New approach to
partnership working

UR Sheffield South West Neighbourhood team now has
a Safer Neighbourhood Co-ordinator responsible for
working with and integrating the work of all organisations in
our areas, contributing to improving the safety of our
communities.
The new co-ordinator is Shaun Morley who has a vast array of
experience in the partnership world as a former Sheffield policing
commander, but in his new role is now working for Sheffield City
Council.
“I am really looking forward to working with everyone who can
make a positive contribution to improving community safety and the
quality of life for the local residents within our communities,” he
said. “Despite only being in the role for a short while, I have been
impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment of those
organisations working to reduce vulnerability and improve safety in
the local area.
“I firmly believe that if we can develop a more integrated, coordinated
and co-operative approach to community safety, it can
only lead to more positive outcomes for our local residents.”
Shaun’s first action was to introduce a Neighbourhood Action
Group, which will bring together all the statutory organisations
such as the police, local authority, education and health services, as
well as local groups, to discuss issues and create integrated plans
to address problems. Initially, Shaun will be looking at
commencing this in the Nether Edge and Sharrow wards before
expanding this to our other areas.

Coronavirus meant the garden gates at
Fernleigh had to remained closed last
summer - but not this year!
OW we can hopefully get out and about again this
summer, you may be faced with a dilemma - where to
go? The good news is that you don’t have to travel miles to
enjoy yourself.
Everyone knows that the Active8 area is surrounded by
beautiful parks and woodland and that the Peak District is just
over the hill - but there are surprises, too. Take Keith and
Christine Littlewood’s garden, for instance.
You could walk along Meadowhead Avenue and not have a clue
that their beautiful third-of-an-acre cottage garden exists. It
offers a wonderful splash of colour on a summer’s afternoon.
Over the years, the couple have welcomed thousands of visitors
on specially-arranged open days and everyone marvels at this
secret S8 hideaway.
The Littlewoods are once again opening up their premises at
Fernleigh, 9 Meadowhead Avenue, for visitors to admire.
Their garden will be open on Sunday, June 27th, Sunday July
25th, and Sunday August 29th, in aid of the NGS. Admission is
£3.50 for adults and accompanied children are admitted free. The
garden will be open from 11am-5pm.
There will be refreshments and plants for sale, plus a fun animal
search for children. Keith and Christine do ask for visitors to wear
masks and keep to social distancing rules.
Said Christine: “Hopefully we can get back to raising funds for the
National Garden Scheme who donate to Macmillan Cancer Support,
Marie Curie, Hospice UK and many other charities.
“Thank you to all those who have supported us in the past and we
hope 2021 will see an end to the Covid problems.”
The Fernleigh garden is absolutely packed with plants by a true
plantswoman. There are differently-planted areas to provide allyear
interest, plus an auricula theatre, patio, gazebo, greenhouse, a
miniature log cabin with living roof, a cobbled area with unusual
plants in pots, alpine displays and a wildlife 'hotel'.

Improvements
to Graves Park
playground
C
HILDREN’S playground, which has been busy over the
past year, has undergone improvements and has more
planned.
Despite a brief closure during the first lockdown, Woodseats
Playground proved particularly popular with parents homeschooling.
The group Friends of Woodseats Playground: Graves Park report
that they have successfully implemented a new landscaped area at
the entrance to remove some Tarmac and introduce more greenery
and nature.
There are also new benches spread around the playground,
allowing parents, grandparents and guardians to take a seat while
children play.
In 2021, the playground will see the delivery of a further new
climbing frame for older children and teenagers to provide
entertainment for a wider age range for which funding has been
secured.
Trustees are also seeking to apply for significant further funding for
improving surfacing and further landscaping.
Since 2017, the group has raised more than £60,000 from the
community and grant funding.

TRIDING out in the Yorkshire Dales in June will be staff
members from Sheffield business ITM Power.
Several of those undertaking the Yorkshire Three Peaks live in and
around the Active8 area.
Their aim is to raise money for The Children's Hospital charity by
completing the 25-mile walk which includes 1,585m of ascent,
climbing to the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.
They are undertaking the challenge on behalf of ITM Nurture - a
fundraising team within the business that works to support local
charitable causes.
The team’s initial target was to raise £2,000 through sponsorship,
but pledges totaling more than £2,305 have already been made.
Staff members have already supported the Children’s Hospital
through in-house fundraising including Christmas jumper days
and baking.

Peace and quite in
the walled garden
T
HE area’s parks have been popular during the pandemic
as a place for home workers to take a break.
Meersbrook Walled Garden, in Meersbrook Park, could be now
opened up at lunchtime during the week for people continuing to
work from home.
Volunteer Kaktus Leach asked social media followers if they
would be interested in the idea and got a positive response.
He said: “When talking to people in Meersbrook Park, I have
found that it has become popular among homeworkers who
needed a break, a blast of fresh air and relief from the
isolation.
“In the walled garden, we were thinking of opening up at midday
once or more a week and anyone could come and bring a picnic and
have a chat with whoever was there if they feel like it. There would
be no charge or any other expectations apart from hoping people
took their litter home.”
Rachel Cundy said: “I've missed the walled garden so much. I
sometimes just stand and look through it at the gate. It's so pretty
this time of year too!”
Cassie Killah added: “I think the interest would be very high and
I’m sure most people would happily donate a quid or two to
support the maintenance.”

century Meersbrook Hall, the walled garden was acquired under
licence from the council after a public campaign in 1999 and
developed into an award-winning community space.
More than 2,000 species of plants can be found inside, as well as
a traditional Japanese garden and a Chinese Sequoia.

What’s for breakfast?
W
HEN it comes to breakfast, my meal of choice is not
only a labour of love, it’s perhaps a little ‘woke’.
Organic porridge oats with soya milk and sometimes a nub of
coconut milk, topped with blueberries.
It has to be slowly brought to the boil on the hob, rather than
blasted in the microwave, stirred for a minute and rested for at
least another. I’ve even splashed out on a small never-stick pan for
the purpose!
Other vegan breakfasts cropping up more and more often include
scrambled tofu, smashed avocados on toast and baked granola.
Whether the upsurge in plant-based diets is here to stay, it has
made the list of conventional breakfast items seem even longer.
The traditional English breakfast remains a national institution but
it has taken on many forms over the years and other influences
have come to the fore from Europe, America and beyond.
Pre-covid, breakfast seemed to have moved towards all-day
availability and be part of doing business, and, throughout the
pandemic, elaborate home-made breakfasts have remained a
highlight of social media feeds – pun intended!
The tradition of breakfast can be traced right back to the Middle
Ages, when it was one of the two meals a day, along with dinner,
and was served later in the day than during modern times. It
usually consisted of ale and bread, with cheese, cold meat or
dripping.
However more elaborate breakfasts were served by noble classes
at social or ceremonial occasions such as weddings, which took
place in the morning.
During the 18th and 19th century, the gentry hosted lavish
breakfasts, with eggs and bacon on the menu, along with kidneys,
cold meats, and fish dishes such as kippers. This habit eventually
travelled down the social spectrum to middle classes and ordinary
working folk who filled up on the traditional full English before
labour.
Your standard ‘full English’ is usually taken to include fried eggs,
sausages, bacon, tomatoes, and mushrooms, accompanied by a cup
of tea or coffee and toast.
There are lots of adds-ons, such as black pudding, baked beans,
and, imports from the United States, hash browns and pancakes.
Parts of the UK have their own versions, such as a potato scone in
Scotland and Welsh laverbread made from seaweed. Various
eateries have come up with their own inventions on a particular

theme, such as gardeners’ or ramblers’ breakfasts.
In more recent years, there has been a move among home cooks
and restaurants towards healthier cooking of the faithful staples,
including scrambling or poaching eggs and grilling meats, as well
as banishing meat or dairy products all together.
A new, lighter, first meal of the day also came into being in hotels
and other establishments – the ‘continental breakfast’, a British
way of describing the sort of foodstuffs eaten in mainland Europe.
This might include pastries, like croissants, salads, cheeses, and
fruit.
Forms of porridge can be traced back thousands of years, and
porridge made from oats is closely associated with Scotland.
However, the cereal market underwent a transformation, in 1895,
after John Harvey Kellogg introduced a new product in the United
States – cornflakes – which quickly proved a huge hit.

Today, you can choose from all manner of processed cereals
made from oats, bran, wheat, rice, maize and other crops.
While most people save breakfast from a cardboard box for home,
cafes have made a feature of the various available brands.
Nostalgia plays a part, given marketing has long targeted children,
with hidden toys, competitions and puzzles. Anyone remember Oat
Krunchies, Wheaties, Ricicles and Corn Pops? Many favourites have
fallen by the wayside due to moves to cut sugar.
Whether eaten at the kitchen table, on a fragrant veranda, or in a
garden, with limited time, or all morning to spare, you could argue
breakfast is that bit different to other meals.
Perhaps it’s that feeling of being only just awake but breakfast
demands pausing, if only for a few minutes, allowing you time to
think, check your phone, read the paper or watch the news.
Perhaps that’s why the popularity of breakfast meetings is
unlikely to wane – business owners and staff give themselves
permission to take time out of their busy schedule. The mind is
maybe more focused than during the liquid lunches of the past.
A good breakfast sets you up for the day and long may it evolve!

The coffee tastes great... but it’s all the better
when you can sit down and enjoy it - indoors!
Our columnist Ellie Colton explains

open once again to customers.
We’re allowed inside! I feel
giddy at the thought.
Everyone I knew had a plan for
May 17th; would they be staying
at home, keeping away from the
crowds? Or would they be taking
full advantage of the indoor
seating at cafes? Had they
booked months in advance for
restaurants?
Had people taken the day off
work to go drink tea inside a
garden centre? I bet someone out there did. My 94 year-old-gran
would have run to the nearest garden centre if she had chance.
Somewhere I can’t wait take my boyfriend, now its open inside,
is my favourite coffee house. They are gluten free specialists and
I had a few of their gorgeous takeaway boxes throughout
lockdown.
My first outing however, on my quest to sit inside somewhere, was
on Woodseats. I never thought having a coffee would feel surreal,
but it did. I was looking at my sister like a maniac whispering
“we’re actually sat… in a coffee shop!”
You’d think I’d not had coffee in months. I had – about two that
morning already.
It’s the experience we’ve all missed though. When everything was
takeaway only, I loved going for strolls round Millhouses Park with
my takeaway coffee. And while I will definitely carry that on, I’m
so happy to have the option to park my bum down inside
somewhere and just relax with a friend or relative.
Since the weather has been so crazy recently, storms at night
then sunny in the morning, I can finally go out and not worry about
whether I’ll get drenched or be sweating. The outdoor seating life
is not for me, I’d rather be cosy, thank you!

Aisthorpe Road. I lived on this steep, cobbled Woodseats street at
No 43 for the first nine years of my life with my parents and
brother. Down the hill at No 12 lived my grandparents.

Barbers Fields. When I was a toddler, a trip in my pushchair to
Millhouses Park always went via this hilly open space between
Woodseats and Archer Road.

Cobnar Road. Home to my great-grandparents who could literally
step over their garden wall into Graves Park.
D
Duncan’s. ‘Uncy Dunc’ was the friendly local pawnbroker whose
shop was at the top of Woodseats Road and many local families
used his services.

Ecclesall Woods. An afternoon out here with the family was a real
adventure - the nearest thing we had to going on a safari.

Fishing. Using a net on a cane,
we would attempt to catch tiny
minnows or tadpoles from the
stream in Graves Park or at
Millhouses Park.

Graves Park. So many
adventures: Pitch and putt,
tennis, boating, the animals, the
cafe, playing cricket, feeding the
ducks... and I’m old enough to
remember the Whit Walks
culminating here.

Hills. Sheffield supposedly has
seven of them, so why are they
all in S8? Great for sledging in
Graves Park, Meersbrook Park
and also down our street (pre
cars).

Infants and Junior School. My
favourite teacher at Woodseats
was Mrs Cowsley and the
highlight of the day was a thirdpint
bottle of milk in the morning.

Kitchenalities. Shop at the bottom of our street, Aisthorpe Road,
which sold many things for the home - including Christmas trees, I
remember.

Linoleum. Even when more houses began having large carpets in
their rooms and hallways, strips of ‘lino’ were often left around the
edge. Great for sliding on!

Millhouses Park. Drew in families from all over Sheffield and a
particular summertime attraction was its paddling stream and
futuristic lido which my dad helped to build.

Newsagents. I particularly remember Ralph Round’s shop, opposite
Chantrey Road, where along with newspapers and magazines, he
also offered a lending library of books.

Outside toilets. Terrible places to visit on cold, dark, wet evenings
when you could find yourself sharing the brick building at the top of
the yeard with a hedgehog, mouse or blackbird.

Police Station. We once called upon the tracking services of
Woodseats Police at Chesterfield Road when our family budgerigar
flew off.
Q
Queues. I remember long lines of folk on the pavement, especially
outside the many butchers’ shops, bakers and fish and chip shops,
all with their own shopping bags.
R
Rag and bone man. Once a familiar sight in local streets, collecting
old clothes in exchange for a balloon or goldfish for a child.
S
Supermarkets. The first one in the
district was Fine Fare, opposite
Woodseats Police Station, which, to
much excitement, was opened by the
PG Tips chimps.
T
Tramcars. I have a distant memory
of watching the city’s Last Tram
rumble along Chesterfield Road in
1960 in the rain, with people putting
pennies on the track to be bent as
souvenirs.
U
Unwell. All kids had measles,
German measles, mumps,
chickenpox, etc, and when parents
spotted symptoms they sent for
Dr Kay to visit their home.

Visitors. The milkman, coalman,
postman, rag and bone man,
insurance man, paper boy, Avon lady,
meter-reader, window cleaner,
chimney sweep and Betterware
salesman would all drop by from
time to time.
W
Williams. No walk along Woodseats was ever complete without
peering into the windows of this amazing electrical goods shop at
the latest radios, TVs, fridges and ovens.

Excitement. Nothing was more thrilling than sledging all the way
down Aisthorpe Road and straight across Chesterfield Road at the
bottom.
Y
Yachting. A summertime activity and all done to scale, of course, on
the busy boating lake in Millhouses Park. Then a go on the paddleboats.
Z
Zoo. Well, the unusual animals in Graves Park’s fabulous farmyard
were the nearest thing we had to a wildlife attraction!

Salt Lake City, the Queen’s Golden
Jubilee and an England World Cup
defeat to Brazil at the quarter-final
stage.
In and around Sheffield 8 it was the
year a new publication dropped through
thousands of letterboxes.
‘Active8’ was launched with the intention
of informing local people about happenings
and achievements in the local area. It also
offered businesses a new window in which
to promote their goods and services.
Produced by family-run Heron
Publications, the glossy magazine was soon
taken to the heart of the S8 community and
the feedback received from both readers
and advertisers was very positive.
Readers appreciated their local news
delivered to them for free each and every
month. Those running shops, showrooms,
pubs and restaurants soon realised
‘Active8’ was the most eye- catching, costeffective
way to get their messages across
to tens of thousands of potential customers, all living in their
target area.
Directors Mike and Helen Firth decided to launch their first
magazine in S8 because journalist Mike had grown up at
Woodseats and knew this part of the city didn’t
have a quality publication to call its own.
As demand for the glossy magazine grew,
distribution of ‘Active8’ was soon increased
from an initial 14,000 copies to 15,500 and
then other titles were launched by Heron
Publications; ‘Dronfield Eye’, ‘Twist’, in
Chesterfield, and ‘Wings’, covering the
Wingerworth and Ashover area and published
every other month.
The company also began the popular quarterly
Sheffield nostalgia publication ‘My Kind of Town’,
copies of which are read all over the country and
overseas.
Heron Publications had its first base in the
office at the home of directors Mike and Helen,
and early offices at Meadowhead, Woodseats
and Greenhill, before moving to Hutcliffe Wood

After a decade there, a new chapter
began when Heron Publications moved to a
former gasworks offices alongside
Chesterfield Road, at Dronfield.
The latest development in the success
story of Heron Publications is further
expansion into north Derbyshire with
the launch, in May, of the bi-monthly
‘So Bolsover’ magazine, in association with
Old Bolsover Town Council.
This has been achieved despite the
challenges posed by the Covid-19
pandemic. Indeed, Mike and Helen
returned to working from their home
during the early days of lockdown,
publishing online issues of magazines with
advertisements for loyal clients included
completely free of charge.
Helen said: “As we depend on advertising
revenue to deliver Active8 and our other
magazines to local homes for free, the
knock-on effect of businesses having to
shut up shop was huge.
“However, we made the decision early
on to do what we could to continue to
serve the communities on our patch as
best we could.
“We felt it was important to support public health information
efforts and recognise the amazing work being done by key workers
and volunteers in the face of a crisis.
“As restrictions have eased, our hard-working
in-house team members have returned to the
office, and our dedicated distributors are again
out and about. Advertisers have repaid us with
their support and we have been able to add
another title to our list of mastheads.
“We are excited to have launched ‘So Bolsover’,
our sixth title, and we are as proud as ever
to continue to serve the S8 area – where our
story began.”

by award-winning Buxton Press, on sustainablysourced
paper using alcohol-free, oil-free
printing procedures and vegetable-based inks.

Back to the
1920s for
charity ball

HE Roaring 1920s is the
theme of a charity ball in
aid of St Luke’s Hospice.
S8 fund-raiser Karen Keady has
organised four previous balls,
raising more than £34,000 to date.
Plans have been made for this
year’s event, which takes place on
Saturday, October 16th, at the
Crown Plaza Royal Victoria Hotel.
Karen said: “Years ago, I
experienced the high level of care
given by St Luke’s first-hand when
my mother was a patient there. I
was shocked when I learnt that
they relied so heavily on
donations. That's when I decided
that I had to help.
“This year will be the fifth charity
ball, which will hopefully be as
successful as the others.”
The dress code is black tie and
ballgowns, not fancy dress, and
there is live entertainment and a
disco. Tickets, are £57 per person,

Greenhill opens up its gardens

REENHILL Community Library is holding its fourth annual Open Gardens weekend on
10th and 11th July.
At least 20 gardens, within a 15-minute walk of the library, will be welcoming visitors.
Tickets, which cost £5, and maps will be available from the library in the run-up to the event and
from the venue’s lawn on the day.

Meanwhile, Sheffield City Council is inviting entries for its Green Fingers garden competition - open
to council tenants.
In its 11th year, the contest gives householders the chance to show off their gardening skills and

see the result of the huge amount of time and effort that tenants put into their gardens and the
standard gets higher each time.

HE harrowing
Covid-19 death
toll has brought the
need to make a will
into sharp focus.
During lockdown,
preparing wills was
extremely difficult.
We had to sign
paperwork in gardens
and driveways, whilst
clients asked
neighbours to act as
witnesses.
In response to the
pandemic, the
government
introduced temporary
legislation allowing
wills to be witnessed
virtually. It applies
from the end of
January last year for
a period of two years,
but could be
shortened or
extended if deemed
necessary.
For a will to be
valid, it must be made
in writing and signed
by the person
commissioning it (or

witnessing of wills being signed
someone else at their direction) in the presence of two witnesses,
who must also sign in the presence of the individual.
This requires at least three people to be close enough together to
see the document. Clearly, this has been challenging of late,
particularly for those who were shielding.
The new legislation means we can now use software, such as
Zoom or FaceTime, to witness wills when someone’s physical
presence is not feasible. Throughout the call, the witnesses and
person making the will must have sight of each other, so signatures
can be observed.
As the same document needs to be signed by all parties, it will
have to be sent to each witness, potentially requiring multiple video
calls to be made.
This could lead to problems if the individual making the will
was to die before both witnesses had signed. Additional wording
would also need to be added confirming it was witnessed
virtually.
Although this temporary legislation helps address the problems
caused by coronavirus, it should be treated with caution. It could
lead to a rise in the number of contested estates, or leave
vulnerable people open to undue influence.
I would recommend seeking legal advice before proceeding with
the virtual witnessing of a will. Wherever possible, signing the
traditional way - with everyone in the same room - is still the best
option.

images were taken by Pete Butler, of Strelley Avenue, off
Abbey Lane.
The one shown above is rather special, as Pete explains: “The
photo of Abbey Lane is remarkable because it was taken at 9.02am
on a weekday - and the are no cars moving!”
The picture was, of course, taken during lockdown - on the same
day as Pete captured these other two images of Beauchief Golf
Course (below) and a blossom on his own street, Strelley Avenue.
Said Pete: “I’ve been taking photos since I was 15 - that’s 50
years! In the 1980s I worked at Cherrytree Photo Labs for six
years and could process my films. It was an amazing privilege to
get unlimited free colour prints at a time when they were so
expensive.
“I like to experiment with unusual angles and light conditions.
Lockdown clipped my wings rather, and I was confined to my
garden mostly. For the first time I spent a lot of time in my back
garden watching the Spring flowers and plants develop.”

HAT is one of the most important requirements to run
an electric vehicle? Access to convenient, reliable and
affordable charging.
If a motorist has their own driveway, the answer is to have
their own electric vehicle charger installed and do the majority
of their charging at home. Over 80% of charging is currently
carried out this way.
But what about motorists living in flats and terraced houses,
who don't have access to a charger?
The English Housing Survey of 2016 reveals that 40% of the

So what if some of these home charger owners were willing to
connect with neighbours in flats and terraces, share their charger
and help create a cleaner, greener neighbourhood?
The app, Co Charger, enables those who do have chargers,
whether motorists, businesses or community buildings to
share them with neighbours who don't, through Community
Charging. Community Charging is the utilisation of community
resources – chargers, space, infrastructure, people or
finance – to allow members of that community to run electric
vehicles.
Co Charger connects hosts with chargees. Hosts are motorists
and organisations with an EV charger they would be open to
sharing, whether that's a neighbour, charity, or a small
business. Chargees are people who have an electric vehicle,
or are considering buying one but aren't able to charge at
home.
In addition to helping the environment, Co Charger Hosts can also
earn income to help recoup the cost of their charger. The app does
the 'matchmaking', allowing Hosts and Chargees to find each other
and enables Hosts to manage weekly, recurring bookings and set
the price they would like to charge for the service.
The process and payment structure is deliberately very simple.
At the end of each charging session the Chargee pays via a
card pre-registered in the app and the Host receives that

ARAKEETS are becoming
celebrities across the
region.
In the area where I live, close to
Graves Park, the resident parakeet
population is drawing folk in from
across the region and even from
Yorkshire. I met a lady from Chesterfield eager to see them and a
birdwatcher down from Wakefield too.
I understand that not everybody likes these exotic additions to our
bird fauna, but they are stunning, striking, and dramatic. These are
definitely birds with the ‘wow factor’.
Long-lived and highly intelligent, these tropical parrots are brash,
loud, and colourful. Numbers are rising and the piercing calls made
from the treetops or in flight form a sound that is now a distinctive
feature of my local park’s birdlife.
Courtship and pair-binding behaviour is entertaining and complex,
and when feeding, there appears to be a definite ‘pecking order’ too.
How they interact with other, generally ‘native’ birds, is of course a
question that will only be answered in the longer term.
I have a wildlife gardening trick of creating an ‘artificial apple-tree’
in my garden by spiking apples onto a specially-pruned standard
cotoneaster bush and on a metal bird-feeder. These are a great
attractant for blackbirds, great tits, blue tits, robins…… and yes,
parakeets! In fact, all these birds love the apples and if you buy low
cost packs they work out as good value too.
The parakeets are a remarkable addition to my wildlife garden and
to those of neighbours too. My maximum numbers in the garden have
so far been about six to eight, and up to 15 overhead.
If numbers grow, as I am sure they will, then the impact and the
noise might not be so welcome but for now they are providing a bit of
excitement during the Covid period. They are getting bolder too and
will happily feed halfway down the garden when we are on the patio.
In London parks, they will come to people to be fed, but we are not
there yet!
Other birds making their presence felt have been the mistle
thrushes singing loudly from the higher trees and often quite hard to
see. Their song is insistent but not tremendously musical, especially
when compared to their cousins the blackbirds.
Blackcaps on the other hand are also loud but exceptionally sweet
and melodious; the very similar-sounding garden warbler is slightly
more harsh and scratchy.
The former inhabits dense woodland areas particularly with lush
groves of holly, whereas the latter is essentially a bird of shrub and
scrub habitats.
Robins add to the musical backdrop to the garden and are joined by
the persistent but rattling song of the dunnocks and the explosive
notes of the local wren.
Others joining in around our green oasis of local gardens are
chaffinches, greenfinches, nuthatches, great-spotted woodpeckers,
and, of course, the ubiquitous blue tits and great tits.
Starlings nesting under my neighbour’s ridge-tiles add a degree of
mimicry to the whole affair.
