and paints family portraits where they’re engaged in an 

activity, such as fishing, boating, golf, or snowmobiling. He 

also paints cottages so that people have a tangible memory 

of their retreat to take back home with them.

Kitchen Makes a Statement

When Beverly Wellington, Kitchen Designer 

at Cabinetree, bought her Peterborough 

subdivision home in 2014, she was stuck 

with a small, dark kitchen with cabinets around the 

perimeter that weren’t very functional. A few years 

later as a quick fix, she painted the cabinets and added 

some tile, but she said it was like “putting lipstick on a 

pig!” 

“When I was in the middle of renovating my basement, 

I saw an opportunity to move the old kitchen 

downstairs, and completely re-design the space,” she 

says. “I realized that I didn’t need a formal dining area, 

and I based the new kitchen on the existing footprint, 

but with increased functionality and a lovely new 

island that is now the focal point of the main floor.” 

The elegant 3 ft. x 6 ft. island has the appearance of 

Calacatta marble, but is actually a durable laminate 

with grey veining that stands up to everyday wear and 

tear. It has seating for up to four on one side, while 

on the other, there is storage for pots and pans, prep 

tools, and small appliances. 

“I find it quite handy now preparing meals at the 

island. I don’t have to go far, being only two steps 

away from the fridge, stove, and sink, with all my 

utensils at close reach,” she says. “With electrical 

outlets at both ends, it’s convenient to plug in a mixer 

or blender. Another added bonus is that I’m no longer 

disconnected from guests when entertaining.” 

The cabinets Beverly chose are in a Shaker style, in 

a palette of white on the uppers and a smoky, greyblack 

on the lowers. She chose Thermofoil cabinetry 

because they offer excellent durability and are a breeze 

to clean, being a seamless one-piece construction. Even 

better, the lower cabinets offer fingerprint resistance, 

which is a common issue dark surfaces have to 

contend with.

“I like to maximize function in every cabinet,” she 

says. “My previous cabinets were small and slapped 

together with no thought for their storage capacity.” 

When designing the cabinets, Beverly looked at a 

variety of options to make the most of the space: 

garbage neatly tucked below the sink, tray and 

cutting board dividers above the fridge, a lazy Susan 

in an otherwise hard-to-utilize corner space, deep 

drawers to store frequently used small appliances, 

and a small spice cabinet beside the microwave. 

She designed extra-deep cabinetry surrounding her 

family-size fridge for a more finished, “built-in” look. 

The subway tile backsplash is in a varied grey 

and white tone to complement the cabinets and 

countertops. Accents like the textural pendant lights 

over the island and the abstract painting next to 

the fridge pick up on the colour palette and tie the 

whole space together. 

Wellington says that she now often sits in her 

adjacent living room, admiring her beautiful, new 

kitchen. 

“I love how my formerly small, dark kitchen has 

been transformed into a large, bright space with 

ceilings that feel two feet taller than before,” says 

Wellington. “A truly amazing thing happens when 

you carefully plan your space - because even when 

constrained to work within the same footprint, any 

space can change drastically for the better.” 

Beverly Wellington is excited to help Cabinetree 

clients with the design of their new spaces. 

“Typically, I try to get as much information as 

possible from them, as to what their personal style 

is and what they’re looking to gain from the space,” 

she says. “I ask broad strokes questions about items 

on their “must-have” list. And if they would like to 

incorporate special accessories or need to make 

accommodations to suit their lifestyle.” 

She says she will also ask questions about their 

lifestyle, such as whether they like to cook or bake, 

how much they entertain, and if children will be 

utilizing the space.

Modern Home Near Rice Lake 


This is part one of a two-part article. 

Colleen and Keith had been looking at rural 

properties between Uxbridge and Marmora 

for awhile, wanting to find the best place in 

which to raise their Morgan horses. When they saw 

the 100-acre property near Bailieboro 32 years ago on 

the north side of Rice Lake, they fell in love with the 

beautiful rolling hills. 

They lived in the 150-year old farmhouse on the 

property throughout those years, but over time they 

became dissatisfied with the small galley kitchen, its 

dark interior and the recurring water leakage in the 

mouldy basement. 

“When we started looking into renovations, we realized 

that compared to building a new house, the difference 

in cost was manageable,” says Colleen. 

Colleen was raised in Alberta and spent a lot of time in 

the mountains. 

“I love the style of timber chalets you see in the 

Rockies, and I wanted to have something similar here 

in Ontario,” she continues. “Basically, I wanted to bring 

the outside in – to be able to see outside, without 

having to go to a tiny window to look out, which is 

what it was like in the farmhouse.” 

After seeing a Discovery Dream Homes billboard, 

the couple decided to visit their showroom and was 

impressed with the models and styles of homes they 

had there.

the couple liked the Las Ventanas Model, which is a 

two-level, three bedroom, approximately 3,600 sq. ft. 

home. 

“I loved that the model had large windows across 

one side of the home – it matched the idea of what I 

wanted – to have a lot of windows facing south to view 

the whole property,” says Colleen.

The couple modified the design to fit their lot and wish 

list, by adding an attached garage and adapting the 

roof style to have two gables and large timbers on the 

front. Discovery is open to adapting their models. 

“The property and the clients dictate what 

modifications need to be made,” says Peter. “The 

couple wanted a modern contemporary feel, while still 

retaining the natural rustic warmth of timber which is 

stained and dried in a controlled environment.” 

Keith appreciated that that they could visualize the 

finished home through Discovery’s 3D software. 

“We’re continually updating our 3D software to make 

it as realistic as possible, with furniture placement, size 

and flow of the rooms, so you can open the door and 

make sure it doesn’t hit a bed, ensure that the chairs 

at the kitchen island have space to pull out, and to see 

the colours and wall textures,” says Peter. 

It was important to the couple to have an energyefficient 

home. 

“With all of the windows, we wanted to ensure that 

it was energy efficient, and at Discovery, our own 

personnel are trained and certified to do energy 

efficient audits to ensure the best glass-to-wall ratio, 

insulation and wall thickness levels, to complete an 

Energy Efficiency Design Summary or EEDS,” says 

Peter. 

With all Discovery projects, the client has the option 

of going with Discovery-certified builders, or they can 

help facilitate the build themselves by being involved 

in the construction and/or assisting with decisions on 

the finishes, backed up by Discovery’s factory support 

team. Colleen and Keith opted to go with Kawartha 

Lakeshore Building Co., a contractor approved by 

Discovery.

Details!’ was the name of the game when 

Camiel and Wendy were planning their 

complete kitchen renovation. Their original 

kitchen, built in 1997, was pink of all colours, and it 

was dark and small and difficult to work with. 

Creating a bright, high functioning kitchen became 

the focus of their redesign. 

Camiel owns and operates Vintner’s Cellar, 

Peterborough’s premium wine-making destination, 

and he met his kitchen designer through work. 

“My business was located in the same plaza as 

Kitchen Cabinet Solutions,” says Camiel. “I’d gotten 

to know owner Brenda Perry and we turned to her 

when it was time for a new kitchen.” 

“Camiel and Wendy were wonderful clients - 

they knew what they wanted and were open to 

suggestions,” says Brenda. “Their new kitchen is a 

bright, airy space with lots of light filtering through.” 

Getting there was no small feat. 

“Camiel and Wendy’s previous kitchen had many 

challenges, such as an angled wall that was difficult 

to deal with,” says Brenda. “I suggested that we create 

a custom pantry on an angle, with all of the tall 

appliances on that wall – the fridge, wall oven and 

microwave along with pantry cabinets - to present a 

clean, efficient look.” 

She also suggested removing the wall between the 

kitchen and the dining room to open up the space. 

And replacing the kitchen window with a picture 

window to let in more light. Instead of an island, 

they went with a peninsula to make the most of the 

space, and they topped it with gorgeous Cosentino 

‘Ocean Storm’ quartz to add warmth, interest and 

movement to the space. 

The showstopper in this kitchen is the perfectly 

placed island hood. 



Bought a

“It was a lot of work!” says Camiel, who spent many 

hours installing it. “It’s a lot of weight to support in 

the ceiling.” Meant to act as an island hood, they 

opted to use it between the dining room and the 

kitchen, creating a half wall between the two rooms 

to showcase the hood. The result is absolutely 

stunning and the most clever use of space.

“The new kitchen is night and day compared to the 

old one,” says Camiel. “It has certainly changed the 

whole look and feel of the house and added a lot of 

value. Brenda and her team were great to work with 

and their installer, Adam was impressive. He was an 

artist with the detailed mouldings.” 

The cabinets are a Shaker style in white with brushed 

nickel handles and solid wood dovetail drawers. Great 

use of accessories optimizes every square inch of

New Boathouse Boutique and the 

Bikini Beans Café Opens in Buckhorn 


Angela Jones, owner of Lakeshore Designs, is 

happy to announce the opening of her new, 

second location in the heart of the hamlet 

of Buckhorn, across from the Main Street Landing at 

Lock 31 on the Trent-Severn Waterway, which is sure 

to become a destination for area visitors. This design 

boutique and café with a walk-up window is open 

seven days a week providing lake-inspired giftware 

and home décor, with on-site parking. 

“The Boathouse Boutique by Lakeshore Designs is 

catering to visitors who might be touring around 

by boat, sea-doo, motorcycle or car,” says Angela 

Jones. “We have nautical décor items that are easy 

to transport, giftware suitable for hostess presents, 

dishware, candles, décor pillows, throw blankets, 

cottage artwork, seasonal wear, shoes, handbags, and 

more.” 

As with their first location just south of Lakefield, 

Lakeshore Design staff are available to consult about 

interior design projects, provide advice on furniture 

and room layouts, and renovations. 

The other part of the store houses the Bikini Beans 

Café, offering coffees, lattes, cappuccinos, and bakery 

snacks. Angela’s daughter Samantha Pillon, owner of 

the café, will be managing the new location. 

When asked why she chose that particular location for 

her new store, Angela replied, “It’s a beautiful area, 

right across from the lock and park area. Buckhorn 




has been improving the waterfront area and has great 

plans for future expansion — it’s a perfect spot for 

people strolling along the waterfront on an outing 

to come in, enjoy a coffee, latte and a treat while 

browsing around for that unique item to enhance their 

cottage or purchase as a gift.” 

Angela and her team completely renovated the exterior 

and created an attractive garden setting, while creating 

a nautical feel for the interiors. 

When the pandemic restrictions are lifted, Angela 

intends to hold workshops on décor, such as craft 

nights, ask-a-designer night, and more. 

“We’re there to help people plan and improve the 

interior spaces of their homes and cottages, with 

furniture layouts and purchases — a full turn-key 

service where we set everything up for you,” she says. 

“We do a consultation, working with the client’s wish 

list to achieve the look they want within their budget.”

High-End Custom Stonework Market 


This year, Drain Bros. Excavating Ltd is 

celebrating their 50th year in business. Since 

1971, the company has been providing the 

highest quality construction products and services 

to communities throughout the Kawarthas and the

Plant, has its focus on the high-end custom stonework 

market. With the aid of high precision machinery 

imported from Germany and Italy, along with a young

“Drain Bros. is the largest and best equipped 

company to offer high end, custom stone work in 

the Kawarthas,” says Aaron Brown, who oversees the

locally, from quarries right in the Kawarthas. The types 

of stone include limestone and Belmont Rose granite

Their custom stone-work product offerings currently

product that is easily installed for patios and walkways, 

is extremely popular. It is available in a few different 

finishes including sandblasted and flamed. 

“We’ve worked with many cottage owners and 

homeowners in the past couple of years who are very 

pleased with their custom natural stone, and they 

often send us photos of the stonework installed,” says 

Brown. “We care about creating things that people are

Artist Murray Henderson Paints

Recently relocated from Peterborough to the 

Stoney and White lake area, Murray Henderson 

is enamoured of the nature surrounding him 

and is opening up his studio by appointment for 

visitors to share his enthusiasm. An eclectic painter, 

Henderson has a wide range of subject matter, from 

sports-related themes and abstract paintings, to 

tranquil nature scenes. 

“Since the move north, I’ve found myself going back to 

my first love – nature and wildlife,” he says. 

Raised in Bowmanville and moved to Peterborough 

in 1987, Murray Henderson displayed his artistic 

talent early in life. He has been actively pursuing art 

since grade school and has grown to become a highly 

celebrated artist, enjoying success with his wildlife and 

sports paintings. 

Henderson takes commissions, and paints family 

portraits where they’re engaged in an activity, such 

as fishing, boating, golf, or snowmobiling. He likes to 

paint dogs lounging on a dock, canoes floating on a 

serene river, or fishing boats on a misty lake. He also 

paints cottage scenes so that people have a tangible 

memory of their retreat to take back home with them. 

Throughout his artistic career, Henderson has been 

committed to supporting worthy causes in the 

community around him. Sharing his paintings with 

charitable organizations across Canada and the United

conservation organizations such as Ducks Unlimited 

Canada, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters

Henderson’s work is featured in private and corporate 

collections in Canada, the U.S., Scotland, England, 

Ireland, Sweden, South Africa and Australia. Many 

prominent NHL personnel also own his art. His exact 

abstract-style sports art has taken off in the U.S. 

In his paintings, Henderson uses acrylics and mixed 

media to capture his images, air brushing the 

background and using small brushes to paint the 

highly detailed foreground. He usually paints from 

photographs or from his quick sketches. He studied 

photo realism and air brush painting in North Carolina 

with artist Dru Blair. 

When asked why he likes to create art, Henderson 

says, “It doesn’t matter where I am, I’m excited to paint 

what’s around me, especially now that we’re living near 

White Lake and Stoney Lake, where we’re surrounded 

by nature, wildflowers, white pines, deer and other 

wildlife all through the seasons.”

HOW IT ALL STARTED 

Coco Cakes was inspired by our founder Mackenzie’s 

first pony Coco. Coco was welcomed into the Hope 

family when she was rescued from an auction barn in 

2003. Her mouth was slightly deformed because of an 

injury she received after getting out of her paddock. 

When Coco was around the age of 5, a vet warned that 

she may deteriorate with age due to her inability to get 

enough food so Coco’s health was always a growing 

concern for Mackenzie. That’s when Mackenzie, 

alongside her mother, began to bake cookies for Coco. 

These cookies were small, soft enough for her to chew, 

and packed full of all the nutrition that she needed.

In 2019, while Mackenzie was attending a show she 

realized that there were no healthy treat options 

available for her to purchase after running out of her 

own homemade treats. She then made it her mission to

KAWARTHA LAND TRUST 

Protecting the Christie Bentham Wetland 

With support from over 200 people from the 

Stony, White, and Clear Lakes communities 

a total of over $750,000 was donated in 

under seven weeks to purchase the newest Kawartha 

Land Trust (KLT) property south of Burleigh Falls. 

This property was formerly referred to as the Clear 

Lake North Wetland. It is now named after long-time 

Stony Lake community member Christie Bentham. 

When Christie passed, she left a gift in her will to 

KLT. $250,000 from her gift became the keystone 

donation to purchase the property. The property 

has been renamed the Christie Bentham Wetland to 

honour both her gift and her legendary love for Stony 

Lake. Christie was a legend on Stony Lake during her 

lifetime and now her name will forever be linked both 

in memories and on maps. 

The 137-acre property features over 1,200 feet of 

natural, undisturbed waterfront on Clear Lake. It also 

provides vital habitat for breeding fish, birds, and 

various species at risk. 

The Provincially Significant Wetland on the property 

contributes to the water quality of MacKenzie Bay and 

Clear Lake. This benefits the surrounding lakes and 

waterways. Thank you to everyone who supported 

the Christie Bentham Wetland project. 

The property also features walking trails that are well 

known in the community. These trails remain open to 

the public. The dream is for these trails to form part 

of an interconnected trail network across multiple 

properties between Burleigh Falls and Young’s Point. 

The protection of this property is a critical step 

towards this dream. 

Currently, KLT is conducting consultations about the 

plans for a larger trail network in this area.

in this area, and help make an interconnected 

trail network a reality, by donating today at

This summer, KLT will be putting in signs and 

developing trails on the Christie Bentham Wetland

Q: Are sunscreen blinds a good idea for 

the cottage? 

A: “Sunscreen blinds are ideal for the cottage - they are energy 

efficient, require no maintenance, and prevent your furniture, 

floors and pictures from fading,” says Howie Murney, owner of 

Howie’s Blinds. “ They absorb the heat in the summer, cooling 

down the interior, and keep the heat inside during the winter.” 

Howie says that there are affordable motorized sunscreen blinds 

now on the market that are about half the cost that they were 

previously, which can be operated by remote control or by zero 

gravity lift. 

“Sunscreen blinds allow you to see out when they are down, so 

you don’t lose your view of the lake outside. They allow natural 

light to come in, filtering out heat and glare,” he says. “And they 

come in different styles and colours, adding elegance to your 

cottage.”

Q: What safety and security features should 

I keep in mind while selecting a new 

overhead garage door? 

A: “New garage door openers and doors have many more safety 

features than in the past,” says Ron Beausoleil, owner of the Overhead 

Door Company of Peterborough. “They are much more sensitive and 

have a reverse system should they come in contact with an object, pet or 

small child while going up or down.” 

New electronic units come equipped with photo-eye sensors that have 

a reversing mechanism, a feature that has been mandatory since 1996. 

And new doors are “pinch proof” which means that your fingers won’t get 

jammed between the door panels if you’re lifting or closing it manually. 

In terms of security, Beausoleil says new electric operators have a remote 

system with a rolling code which can’t be duplicated, and that new 

garage doors are constructed of heavy duty materials that deter burglars. 

Even if the doors have small windows, he says that it’s uncommon for a 

break-in to take place through a garage door window. If you’re concerned 

about security, you can always have frosted or tinted windows installed.
