THE BUKOWSKI
BOILERMAKER
Charles Bukowski wasn’t an easy person to know, but he is an easy person to imitate
when it comes to cocktails. His favourite drink was a Boilermaker, which is quite
simply a lager beer and a shot of bourbon.
Ingredients
60ml bourbon
500ml light beer
How to make it
Fill a shot glass with bourbon. Pour the light
beer into a beer glass, then add the shot of
bourbon. Repeat if necessary.
Thrilling reads and a (big) bottle of wine
A kidnapped heiress, a robbery, an escape. And a 20-year-old cold case – the FBI
has no leads, no clues, no success. Until two decades later, when a murdered
man is found in his apartment, along with one of the stolen items and a suitcase
with the initials WHL3. Windsor Horne Lockwood III. Or Win, as he’s called by his
few friends. And what Win has, and the FBI doesn’t, is a personal connection to
the case, a large fortune, and his own unique brand of justice. Harlan Coben,
with his signature twists and turns, keeps the adrenaline going in Win, his latest,
massively gripping thriller. Century. Available at exclusivebooks.co.za • A five-yearold
child missing in the woods, his nine-year-old sister who’s known to stretch
the truth. An imaginary friend, deceitful husband, and a best-selling author
Win a magnum of The Old Man’s Blend
There are some big, bold, gripping reads this June. Which call for a big, bold wine.
A big, bold magnum of wine. Hello Groote Post’s The Old Man’s Blend Red
2019. This wine is a blend of 50 per cent Merlot and 25 per cent each Cabernet
Sauvignon and Shiraz. ‘This is a fantastic vintage. The three varietals all reached
optimal ripeness in perfect timing for the harvest’, says winemaker Lukas Wentzel.
This is a down-to-earth, ripe-fruit-driven blend. Captivating red fruit notes delight
the senses, most notably cherry, raspberry and cranberry, with soft tannins giving
a smooth finish. R215 from groote-post-wines.myshopify.com/collections/all.
Port for the win
A superb meal. Exceptional family and friends. And a fine port. All the ticks for
a perfect Father’s Day. And while we can’t take care of the first two, we’ve can
help out with the third. We’ve a three-bottle carry pack of some jolly splendid
port from De Krans to give away. What’s in the pack? De Krans Premium Cape
Ruby … a dark ruby port full of the rich flavours of cherries and ripe plum fruit
with hints of chocolate and spice (it’s best enjoyed at room temperature during
these chilly winters days, and is great paired with most cheeses and chocolate
desserts) • De Krans Cape Vintage … a rich, deep, almost inky purple-red port,
which has beautiful aromas of violets, red berries, vanilla and dark chocolate,
and full and rich flavours … think red fruits, dried prunes, cocoa and spice (it’s
lovely with almost all baked desserts or served as a sauce over ice cream, and
is excellent on its own or with well-matured cheese) • De Krans Cape Pink …
a rose petal pink port that has the smooth elegant taste of cherries, plums and
a hint of candyfloss (this is perfect to have after a lazy al fresco lunch in the
winter sun). One - or all - of these would make the perfect gift for dad … you’ll
find them from R66 to R118 at dekrans.co.za. To win a hamper, pop over to our
Dad
His first hero
and her first love
It’s almost time to celebrate Father’s Day, and what better way than to catch up
with new dad, Victor Picoto Jr, who tells us what it’s like to build an empire while
managing both a two-year-old and a two-month old!
Text: MELLISSA BUSHBY. Photographer: TANYA ERASMUS
Victor grew up in Mbombela, living the
ideal little boy’s life. “My childhood was
like no other!” he smiles, “Seriously, it
was any child’s dream. I started racing
motocross at the tender age of five; it
was all I wanted to do, what I dreamt
of doing. It’s everything my childhood
was about - going with my parents to
the races, riding on the weekends and
travelling all over the country to watch
or compete in the different events. My
brother and I were super competitive,
which helped us to push each other to
new boundaries and made for good
racing.”
This was only the start for Victor,
who went on to race professionally
when he left school. He moved
to Belgium and raced for the KTM
Diga racing team. For seven years in
Germany he continued his career,
racing in the World Championship,
European Championship and German
Championship, after which he decided
to come back to South Africa. “I hadn’t
made it into the top 10 in the world
by the age of 25, which is old for
motocross, and I wanted to reunite
with my family, so I came home,”
he says.
It was a good thing he did, because
shortly afterwards, he met his future
wife, Raylene, at Innibos. He laughs and
says, “It’s such a funny story! Raylene
and my birthdays are on the same day.
We met just six years ago just before
Innibos, shortly after our birthday. I had
actually known her for ages, from my
early racing days, as I used to race with
her brother! We dated for two years
before I proposed to her in Ballito, and
we got married a year later.” The couple
travelled to Vietnam shortly afterwards,
exploring the caves, and then went on
to Australia’s Gold Coast. A month later
they found out Raylene was pregnant
with Grayson, who has just turned two.
The latest addition is baby Brooklyn,
and at the tender age of two months,
she already has her dad wrapped
around her tiny little finger.
Grayson and Brooklyn are the apple
of Victor’s eye, evidenced by his
absolute delight when he talks about
or interacts with them. “My little G,” he
laughs,” is two and full of beans! He is
the love of my life; I’m enjoying him
so much. He is such a little character
and the older he gets the more love
he has to give. He takes so much joy in
Raylene, and Victor Picoto Jr
Grayson, little G, is full of beans
Brooklyn already has her dad wrapped around her tiny little finger
Victor is on a mission to obtain his NPC Pro Card
Photographer: Michael Alexander
Grayson,Victor and Raylene
everything around him, he loves jumping
on the trampoline and playing with
balls, oh, and he loves tools, especially
screwdrivers. And his favourite food is
pasta! My little Brooklyn is an angel. She is
a lot better behaved than her big brother!
She’s the first girl in our family, which is
definitely something new to get used to,
but we love every moment of it.”
Along with being a mum to Grayson and
Brooklyn, Raylene is a huge help to Victor
in his current endeavour, which is to get
his NPC (National Physique Committee)
Pro Card. Massively dedicated to his cause,
Victor trains twice a day, following a strict
diet and exercise regime. “When I came
back from Germany I was overweight
and wanted to get back into shape,” he
says. “CrossFit had just started, and that
was the direction I wanted to go in, but
the injuries derived from it just didn’t do
it justice for me. I started bodybuilding
to achieve my goal of a better body,
‘It’s about
the love I have
for them, the
role model I
want to be for
them, the dad I
want to be’
and found I had a love and passion for
it.” Victor admits that it isn’t an easy road
to walk, and dedication and self-control
are the name of the game. “I do miss the
odd glass of red wine,” he laughs, “but
every calorie counts and my willingness
to succeed beats the fleeting longing for
a glass of wine hands down. And Raylene
has been super supportive, especially
before we had the bambinos,” he smiles.
“She’s found her groove, she’s is very
involved with the filming side, recording
all my YouTube videos and keeping my
photographic record up to date.”
Now that the bambinos are here, life may
have changed for the couple, but they
are up for the challenge and Victor is
quite sure on the way forward regarding
his children. “It takes responsibility and
commitment to raise two children,” he
says. “You have to ensure that you look
14 Get It Lowveld June 2021

out for them, but at the same time
not be overprotective. You need to be
able to discipline them effectively, but
not be too hard on them. You need
to always maintain an awareness of
what sort of future you create for them,
what habits you teach them, what
you allow them to get away with and
what you won’t stand for, the friends
they choose, the goals they want to
reach and the opportunity to give
them what they want, but still make
them work hard for it. You also need to
balance being there for them, but then
sacrifice spending time with them,
to make sure you have a career to
support them later. All of these things
need to be taken into consideration.
“But having them in my life has changed everything; I’ll never see myself in the
same way again. It’s about the love I have for them, the role model I want to be
for them, the dad I want to be when I fetch them from school, do things or go
places with them.” The Picotos are also big on family time, and with Brooklyn
being so young, quite a lot of it is spent bonding at home. They also don’t want
to take any chances with Covid, so family time is pretty much bound to the
house at the moment, but they love taking the kids over to Victor’s parents for a
braai, or spending time with friends at Vygeboom Dam.
It sounds like Victor has his hands full. Along with the journey to get his pro card,
he is also focused on building up his business, DIGIT Nelspruit, which provides
money-saving solutions, vehicle tracking, fleet management control, CCTV,
vehicle camera systems and electrical fencing. All this and still being the best dad
he can be is a tall order, but with his lovely Raylene at his side, and Grayson and
Brooklyn cheering from the sidelines, we have no doubt he will attain his goals
and then some. This dad is definitely one to watch!
A Father’s love
Calie Olivier
“I am BUCO and BUCO is me.” – Calie
Olivier
Calie has been involved with BUCO
Nelspruit since its inception in 2011.
This modern-day Father Abraham
views BUCO as part of his family, and
he’s seen many employees grow
up, fall in love, start families, and
even grow old in front of his eyes.
His own beautiful children, Annelie,
Antoinette and Carel, also grew up
in the store that started as Laeveld
Bouhandelaars in 1981. Oom Calie,
as he’s affectionately known, has
five grandchildren as well. There is a
peaceful harmony between the BUCO
and Olivier families.
We listen intently as he describes each
child’s special quirks. Annelie (39) is
the worker bee who has a special
If there is one thing that can be said for BUCO, it’s that it is a family.
We take a closer look at some of the company’s dads, and get a little
perspective from those who count – their kids!
relationship with time. Antoinette (36) is the shopper of the family and Carel (34)
is the one who kept Mom and Dad on their toes.
Each child sent us a personal note about their feelings for their father:
“My pa is my steunpilaar en my raadgewer, en hy ondersteun my altyd in my
besluite wat ek moet maak. As ek onseker oor iets is of ‘n groot besluit moet
neem (soos om my eie onderneming in die middel van ‘n pandemie te begin)
dan kan ek altyd na my pa toe gaan vir sy raad. Hy is ‘n wonderlike oupa vir my
twee kinders en ‘n goeie skoonpa vir my man. Hy hanteer almal altyd dieselfde, of
jy nou vir hom werk of nie. By BUCO dink ek voel die mense dieselfde; hy is altyd
bereidwillig om te luister. Dankie, Pa, lief Pa baie.” – Annelie
“The man I call my father... My dad. There are lots of words that can describe him.
Honest, caring, respectful, loving and ever the optimist, he can see the positive in
any situation and the challenge in any bad time. He has the ability to encourage
you, no matter what is going on in your life. Whether it is a personal or business
matter, he is always ready to help, support and see you through any and every
situation! My dad is an awesome father and grandfather, and we love him so
much.” – Antoinette
“Daar is soveel om te sê oor my pa. Hy is vir my die perfekte voorbeeld van
pawees en Christenwees. Altyd daar vir ons. Almal wat hom ken, ken die persoon
wat altyd sal help en raadgee. Die wysheid en ondervinding wat hy oor die jare
opgebou het by Laeveld Bou, nou beter bekend as BUCO, deel hy graag...” – Carel

Pottie and Ané Potgieter
Christiaan Potgieter
Pottie Potgieter
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more and
become more, you are a leader and an amazing father.” – John
Quincy Adams
True success is measured in many ways, and although Pottie
will most likely tick most of the boxes as a man who has earned
success, it is his ability to balance life and work that makes him
a personal role model. Time is a challenge to most dads, but
Pottie has always been adamant about making time for family.
He is also very influential in promoting family values within the
BUCO Nelspruit branch. Pottie invites his employees to bring their
children to work with them to experience their work environment.
It helps kids understand why parents are sometimes tired or too
busy to assist with certain things.
Pottie’s favourite part of fatherhood is to be involved in the lives of
his children and to steer them in a direction that not only ensures
a bright future, but also leads to happiness. For him, fatherhood is
as much about being a friend as it is to be a mentor. He also places
a lot of value on creating for his children a culture of knowing the
difference between right and wrong. He sees his own children,
Ané (18) and Christiaan (16), as part of the legacy that he wants to
leave behind.
Ané wrote to us about her father:
“My dad is my role model, because he lives by the rule that out of
everything bad comes something good. He helps wherever he
can, but is stern when necessary. My dad treats his co-workers as
family and gladly shares his values with love and patience. In my
eyes, this makes him a shining example of a good leader.”
Christiaan said:
“My dad plays a very big role in my life and from him I learn new
things every day. I agree with my sister, he is an excellent example
for us. I hope and believe that I will be like him when I am working
and have my own family.”
Anton Schoerie
“You don’t raise heroes, you raise sons. But if
you treat them like heroes, that’s what they’ll
become, even if it’s just in your own eyes.”
– Unknown
Anton spends his days ensuring that BUCO
Nelspruit’s woodstore is a “cut above the
rest”. When the dust has settled for the day,
he goes home, where an eager seven-yearold
live wire waits for him to start their usual
virtual car racing extravaganza. Anton admits
it’s a challenge to conserve enough energy
during the day to have what it takes to take
on such an avid opponent. Luan will easily
remind Anton that the racecars are not
lawnmowers as soon as he dare loses his grip
and rides off the track. A work/life balance
is important to every father, and Anton
applauds his employer for allowing time off
to be involved in Luan’s afterschool activities.
There’s an unmissable sparkle in Anton’s eye
when he speaks about his treasured son.
We turn our attention to Luan to see what
his understanding is of Daddy’s day job, and
the response is adorable! He reckons Daddy
works with planks all day. He is proud to
announce that his father also “sometimes”
builds cupboards for houses, but not theirs,
only other people’s. Luan loves that Daddy
works for BUCO. When asked if he’d want
Anton to do anything else, he just replies
with a definite “no”. He, however, impressed
as he is with Dad’s skills, will not be following
in his footsteps, as he has already decided
that he would rather be a firefighter. As he
has a special love of all things water-related,
this seems like an attainable dream. Luan
and Anton can often be found fishing or
swimming for father-son activities, and Anton
supports Luan’s aspirations wholeheartedly!
Wherever the dreams of this little man take
him, there’s no mistaking that he will have his
Dad by his side every step of the way.
Michael Gunn-Henderson
“When my father didn’t have my hand, he had my
back.” – Linda Poindexter
A proud father of one, Michael, sales manager
of BUCO Nelspruit, declares his six-year-old
daughter, Caitlin, to be a daddy’s girl before
saying anything else about her. To ensure
continuous sales in the post-Covid environment
is something that doesn’t get done easily, but
Michael is confident about the future; one he
feels burns very brightly for his little Caitlin. He
tells us of her newfound skill, reading, and how
excited she is to tell them of her daily learnings
at school. Michael admits he may be a little
overprotective. They have come to a point where
Caitlin will immediately turn to Michael and
assure him she’s OK whenever she takes a tumble.
We asked this little lady a few questions about
Dad’s career at BUCO. She’s very sure that he
works hard, but she’s not really sure what he does.
What she can tell us is that Michael helps people.
When she tells us of her future plans, she’s
adamant to also be part of the staff compliment
at BUCO one day. She does, however, much to
everyone’s surprise, nod confidently when we ask
if she thinks she’ll be able to do Dad’s job better
than him! We didn’t dare ask why she thinks that,
but I’m sure Dad’s adoration for his princess has a
lot to do with her confidence.
He’s not a man of many words, but Michael is
undoubtedly smitten with his little girl. With her
love of reading and her absolute enthusiasm
about learning new things, we might be looking
at a future leader here. Word of warning to future
suitors, though: this daddy is not letting Caitlin
out of his sight!
Danté, Quinton and Amoré
Quinton Schoerie
“Blended families: woven together by choice, strengthened together
by love, tested by everything but each uniquely ours.” – Unknown
Fatherhood is a challenging experience for most newcomers to the
title, but choosing to be the broad shoulders that carry no fewer than
five children is “next level”, as the kids say. Quinton heads up his family
of seven with as much gusto as he does his day job. It comes as no
surprise that he also leads one of the busiest departments at BUCO
– hand and power tools. When it’s time to down tools, though, he
returns home to spend time with Leander (11), Xandrich (13), Amoré
(15), Danté (16) and Mari-Shaan (19). You can’t help but feel a tinge
of sympathy for the man when you realise that the majority of the
bambinos are teenagers! However challenging the job, he says his
children are the most important thing in his life and he appreciates
that BUCO supports family values.
To get the details on this undoubtedly brave man, we speak to Danté.
She laughs shyly when she talks about how successful he is at what
he does. Danté has big plans for her future, as she wants to travel
through Europe and spend some time au pairing abroad. She admits
that her stepfather works hard and long hours, but says when he
returns home, he’s the same friendly man on the BUCO sales floor
that clients have come to love and appreciate. Amoré agrees that
he is a successful salesman because of how much he loves what he
does. She says BUCO is part of who they are as a family. She, too, has
big dreams for the future, as she’s an aspiring actress.
Michael and Caitlin Gunn-Henderson
This family is proof that love is the most powerful tool of all. They are
big dreamers who take their lead from the man who proudly speaks
of their dynamic. It seems there really is strength in numbers.
Barbering’s new-found popularity, and an appreciation for traditional
grooming products, has seen the revival of hair tonics … a product
century. For a while, they’ve been overlooked for more modern
alternatives … but they’re back. And for good reason. These
no-gimmick, energising elixirs help to reinvigorate the scalp, provide
vigour and freshness, promote a natural shine and offer a light hold
to help set and define simple styles. They help to protect your hair
the scalp, help to condition and moisturise the hair while stimulating
circulation. The effects of this pampering session are sleek and healthy
locks, less dandruff, and repaired split ends. The light hold created by
these luscious liquids also makes hair easier to work with for
professionals and can create the vital foundation needed to build
extravagant hairstyles. The Bluebeards Revenge Hair Tonics,
available in the brand’s iconic Classic and Cuban scents, also grant
their users with hair that smells irresistible … the classic has a sweet,
modern, barbershop-inspired fragrance, the Cuban packs a punchy
Afrikaans, one of our 11 official
and exuberant, Afrikaans is made
for sharing. A poem entitled My
Taal (My Language) adorns the back
written by renowned singer Elvis
Blue, it speaks eloquently of the
Afrikaans language, and through its
words, brings the wines to life.
of Black Forest gateau in Afrikaans Vol III 2019’s red wine. Notes of mulberry
and cedar are complemented by sweet and savoury spice, with hints of clove
and black pepper bringing complexity to the fruit. Bold black cherry, mulberry
and cassis follow on the palate, with nutmeg, cinnamon and toast. Polished and
seamless with fine, dry tannins and a touch of freshness that keeps the wine
interesting.
Afrikaans Vol III 2020’s white
wine has aromas of zesty lemon,
white pineapple, and subtle notes
of honeysuckle accompanied by
tropical notes of fresh guavas and
sweet melon. The tropical fruits
come to the fore on the palate,
melon and passion fruit provide
balance to the delicate acidity.
Clean and fresh on the palate
mouthfeel that makes this wine
Drive in style
South Africans love their bakkies. It does not matter what
your first car is, a great many people aspire to own a
double cab. And the Hilux is often the preferred choice.
Hilux is a combination of two words, “high” and “luxury”. The first Hilux, produced
at the Hamura Plant, was released in 1968. It was fitted with a 1.5-litre engine
and a four-speed gearbox. It was replaced in 1972 with a slightly larger Hilux.
The base model now sports a 1.6-litre engine and the top-of-the-range model a
2.0-litre one producing 79kW.
The third generation, released in 1978, offered standard-sized bodies and four
long ones. It presented improved ride comfort and many car-like features.
Although the coil springs at the front were replaced with a torsion bar, it
inherited the 1.6-litre 12R-J engine of the previous model.
In October 1979, Toyota released its first four-wheel drive model, fitted with a
2.0-litre 18R-J engine. By this time the Hilux had already proved its tough status in
various environments - nature, commercial and for the entrepreneur.
But let’s fast-forward. Every new generation brought more refinement and
improved toughness. The eighth generation (2015) presented a more occupantfocused
approach, motivated by customer feedback, and more refined and
quieter cabins.
At the time Hiroki Nakajima, the
executive chief engineer behind the
Hilux, said, “Our entire development
concept was centred on ‘redefining
toughness’. We aimed to make the
new Hilux ‘tougher’ based on a much
broader interpretation of that word.
The message we want to deliver to our
customers is embodied in our slogan
for the vehicle: ‘A new era for pickup.
Every inch a Hilux.’”
The Hilux design, although still bold
and masculine, now became a little less
edgy and a lot more attractive - inside
and out.
The technology built into these bakkies
never stops to amaze. When is enough
enough? There is probably no definitive
answer to this question. As people’s
needs for both adventure and comfort
evolve, so will technology, and OEMs
are set on providing what the market
demands.
The world’s most revered bakkie will
keep on evolving. The latest line-up
offers an extensive model range - 32
derivatives at the last count. This really
spoils prospective buyers for choice,
though for the uninformed enthusiast
it may well prove somewhat confusing.
Be that as it may, the “woke” diehard
Hilux buyer knows what they want and
Toyota will oblige!
The latest generation 2.8 GD-6 engine
now delivers 150kW and 500Nm (auto).
Fuel economy has been improved. The
new generation six-speed automatic
gearboxes are super smooth - in
fact, they are so good that manual
gearboxes really does not make sense
anymore. The 2.4 GD-6 4x4 can now
tow up to 3,5 tons, matching the
2.8 GD-6 4x4.
The Hilux, depending on the model,
now packs luxury car-like features like
Electrochromatic (auto-dimming) rearview
mirrors (standard across all Legend
models). Double cab 4x4 models
have leather interior trim, electrically
adjustable front seats, a nine-speaker
audio system with dash-mounted
speakers, keyless entry and pushbutton
start. The list of safety features is
equally impressive.
The long and the short of it is this: fit a
Hilux, any derivative, into Dad’s Father’s
Day stocking and he will forever be in
your debt.
He’d love to be the owner of an awardwinning
bakkie...
Navara goes
above and beyond
Text and photographer: QUICKPIC
The locally-produced Nissan Navara is set to roll off of the production line at
Nissan’s Rosslyn plant this June. With prices starting at R311 000 for the Navara 2.5
Petrol XE SC, and R474 000 for the Navara 2.5D SE MT DC, the modernised line-up
is well-positioned to compete in most of the one-ton pickup segments, according
to Stefan Haasbroek, marketing director of Nissan South Africa.
The new Navara single cab 2.5l DDTi Diesel mid-output (XE and SE Grades), with
its 2.5-litre dual overhead camshafts with direct injection, turbocharged with
intercooler diesel engine producing 120kw of power and 403Nm torque, is already
proving to have the most powerful engine in the class, and is a popular choice for
South African pickup drivers.
“It’s an amazing achievement to see the full set of exciting models for the next
generation Navara that offer customers a choice of both single, and double-cab,
2WD and 4WD options, and a choice of automatic and manual transmissions too,”
Haasbroek said. “This is a fiercely competitive segment, and we are determined to
meet and exceed customer needs,” he added.
A comfortable ride across all of South Africa’s spectacular terrains
Drivers of the all-new Navara will experience significantly enhanced balance,
superb handling, and heightened performance, both on-road, and off the
beaten track thanks to the successful combination of a new chassis with revised
mountings for less vibration; increased rear height; better shock absorber
damping; and a new dual-rate, five-link coil suspension that was designed to
ensure a comfortable ride across all of South Africa’s spectacular terrains.
Tough 4X4 power for difficult terrain
Choose 2WD for maximum efficiency, or shift to 4WD (4H) at speeds up to
100km/h with the Navara’s shift-on-the-fly 4x4 gearbox. Achieve maximum
performance as Nissan’s 4H constantly monitors conditions and adjusts the
balance of power between the front and rear axles to maintain traction, while
the Active Brake Limited Slip Differential system manages power delivery and
wheel braking between the front and rear axles and between the left and right of
the vehicle, depending on traction and speed. New Navara drivers also have the
option to select low range 4WD (4LO) for difficult terrain.
Giving you a bigger and more
balanced payload
Perfect for delivering building supplies to
site or squeezing an extra tent in when
you’re camping in the Tankwa Karoo
National Park, the all-new Navara’s payload
is now 100kg bigger, thanks to an increase
of 36mm in the front, and 64mm in the
rear of the height of the load-box.
“We have invested substantially in
improvements to the noise, vibration, and
harshness reduction for a very quiet and
comfortable drive, which bears testimony
to improvements made on suspension
range and powertrain capability. The
Navara line-up also features additional
safety technology through Nissan
Intelligent Mobility, and offers a host
of cabin features including an 8” touch
screen with NissanConnect, Android
Auto, and Apple CarPlay all to delight and
empower our customers,” said Haasbroek.
With its bold masculine design, the
new Nissan Navara offers customers
good value for money, has low running
costs, competitive parts pricing, and
competitive fuel efficiency, strong
aftersales service, all designed to help
your business’s bottom line, while being
rugged and tough enough to do the
job right, minimising downtime, and
maximising uptime.

LUCKY dad!
Let’s be honest. He does so much for us … and we don’t always show
our appreciation as much as we should. So this year we’re going all
out … with gifts for the most important man in our lives. From Irish
Whiskey to travel bags to softest ever after-shower towels … here’s
our dad-day round-up. And … a massive win coming up.
We’re giving away everything on this page to one lucky dad.
Raise your glass to dad with Bannermans Scotch Whisky. Beautifully fruity flavours to enjoy neat,
on the rocks or mixed. It’s made using older, more aged malt whisky, with a blend of exceptional five
to six-year-old whiskies, which gives it a bolder, more complex flavour than other blends and helps
create its wonderfully smooth, rich character. R199. Details: takealot.com
Sexton Irish Whiskey is a new and unexpected single malt. Rich in hue, approachable in taste and
memorable in character, it’s made from 100 per cent Irish malted barley that is triple distilled in
copper pot stills for smoothness. The finish is a perfect balance of dried fruits and subtle oak notes
and aromas of nuts and dark chocolate followed by marzipan, spice and fruit with a mellow honeyed
taste of malt and oils. The rich, sophisticated liquid is matched by its striking, hexagonal dark bottle.
Details: trumanandorange.com
Dad may not make it to The Med this year, but he can take in the very essenza dell’ Italia with Ginato
Italian Gin. A sunshine-drenched way of life distilled in a bottle. It combines the finest quality
produce from world-renowned terroir … think juniper berries from Tuscany, citrus bursting with
Southern Italy’s unique Mediterranean sweetness, and Italian grapes grown alongside northern Italy’s
idyllic lakes. Mix these and you get the very spirito d’Italia. Details: takealot.com. To mix … we use
Fever-Tree, which has no artificial flavourings or sweeteners. Love them!
Details: fever-tree.com
For travellers – business or pleasure – these Thule Compression Packs are brilliant for packing
smarter and staying organised. The durable compression zipper eliminates excess air between
clothes to maximise space-saving – perfect for pants, shirts and sweaters. Details: thulestore.co.za
selection at Volpes … loads of blankets and throws in a variety of colours and textures. We’re gifting
our dads with a luxurious faux fur Cloud blankets (the snuggle is real), and adding some brushed
cotton pillowcases and sheeting with a beautifully patterned quilt. Details: volpes.co.za
What’s cooking
good looking?
Annatjie Melck, foodie
legend and chatelaine of
Muratie, has a treasure
trove of her own very
special recipes and loves
to explore the very best
pairings with Muratie’s
wines. These two, for us,
are winners.
Every wine tells a story
at Muratie, the historic
Stellenbosch Estate that dates
back to 1685. In the case of
Muratie Mr May Grenache
Noir 2018, the story is of
Cornelius, or Mr May as he
was affectionately called,
who planted and pruned
many a vine at the estate,
and whose attention
to detail and ability to
predict the weather, long
before technology, is
legendary. ‘He taught us
that whenever we saw a
silver cloud lying on the
south-west-facing side of
Simonsberg mountain,
it would rain in two
days' time. Today still,
in memoriam, we have
yet to prove him wrong',
says Rijk Melck. The wine,
aged in French Oak
barrels for 18 months,
is all raspberries and
pomegranate rubies, and
a hint of white pepper
spice. It’s R230 and you
Annatjie’s marrow bones on toast
So easy, so quick, and amazingly tasty. This works as well for a
dinner party starter as it does for snacks around the braai or a
Sunday night don’t-feel-like-cooking dinner.
Ingredients:
You need the middle sections of the long bones (ask your
butcher for 5cm lengths); salt and freshly ground black
pepper to taste; toast
To make:
Preheat the oven to 230˚C
Rinse the marrow bones thoroughly under cold water, and
dry well with kitchen paper towel. Cover an oven pan with
foil and place marrow bones on top.
Sprinkle salt and pepper over the bones and bake for 15 to
20 minutes.
Marrow bones are cooked when the marrow starts pulling
away from the bone and the clear fat starts to drip from
the bone.
Remove pan from the oven and let it cool down slightly.
Use a knife to remove the marrow from the bones and
spread on the toast. Add a little salt according to your
liking and serve immediately, with a glass of Muratie’s
Mr May Grenache Noir.

Annatjie’s salmon with tarragon and cream sauce
If dad’s a fisherman, he’ll probably fancy Annatjie’s salmon dish … served simply
with some lovely baby potatoes, it’s lovely for a dinner party with friends.
Ingredients:
2 salmon fillets; salt and freshly ground pepper to taste; 1 Tbsp (15ml) sunflower oil;
half a small onion, finely chopped; 2 Tbsp (30ml) fresh tarragon, finely chopped; 4
Tbsp (90ml) thick cream; 2 Tbsp (30ml) fresh parsley, finely chopped
To make:
Preheat the oven to 160˚C.
Season the salmon on both sides with salt and pepper
Heat the oil in a heavy-duty pan until hot and cook the salmon (skin-side up) for
three minutes until light brown, then turn it over and cook on the skin side for
another two minutes.
Place the salmon in an oven-safe dish and sprinkle the onion and the tarragon over
the fish.
Add the cream to the dish and bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until the salmon is
cooked.
Sprinkle parsley over the dish and serve with boiled baby potatoes.
Enjoy with Muratie Isabella Chardonnay 2019.
And the story behind this wine … For Rijk and Kim Melck, there could be only one
name for their Burgundian-style Chardonnay, the name of their first child, Isabella,
who today, as a young woman, is classic and elegant, just like the Chardonnay.
The wine, which was matured for nine months in 500L French oak barrels, is a
beautifully fresh, understated and elegant Chardonnay, with an enticing peachblossom
fragrance, ripe stone fruit, melon and citrus flavours with hints of
hazelnuts and vanilla cream from subtle oaking. You can buy it for R220 a
bottle at muratie.co.za.
You will need
• 2x Ensign brushes • Raw wooden pallet tray (we used 3 planks)
• Tjhoko paint: 4 colours (we used Elvis Mix, Vinia Stone, Godfrey’s
Glimpse and Don’s Wash) • Tjhoko: Stencil of Paris • Tjhoko: Antique
glaze • Stencil brush • Vaseline • Cloth (old T-shirt or microfibre
cloth) • Putty knife • Stencil of choice • Masking tape • Sandpaper.

Step 4
Use the Vaseline again and brush here and there. Cover the Vaseline with coat 3
(next colour). We used Godfrey’s Glimpse. Let it dry. Sand away once more and
look at the great reveal!
Step 1
Secure your first stencil of choice to
the top plank of the tray with masking
tape. Using the stencil of Paris, apply it
with the putty knife onto the stencil.
Remove the stencil and let the stencil
of Paris dry (min 40 minutes).
Step 2
Paint the bottom section with one of
your other colours while waiting for
the top part with the stencil of Paris to
dry (we used Elvis Mix). Let it dry for 15
to 20 minutes. You can test it by touch.
Step 5
Back to step 1. Cover the dry stencil
of Paris with a solid colour (we used
Godfrey’s Glimpse). Let it dry. Sand over
the stencil of Paris to reveal the white
coming forth.
Step 6
Use the antique glaze (do not dilute).
Apply to the cloth, and wipe on the
remaining raw timber section, staining
the wood (and sealing it). You can
continue and wipe the antique glaze
delicately over the complete board
to seal. Sand lightly on the edges, and
wherever you need to distress.
Step 7
Lastly, when all is dry, you can apply
another stencil motif with paint. Secure
the stencil with masking tape. Using
the stencil brush, dip it in a little paint
(we used Don’s Wash) and wipe some
off afterwards as well (dry brush). Use
circular movements to “paint” the
pattern on the surface.
Step 3
Take your extra paintbrush and use the
Vaseline to brush a little here and there
on the first coat. Paint over the Vaseline
with a second coat and second colour
(we used Vinia Stone). Let it dry.
Use the sandpaper and sand away
the paint that covered the Vaseline,
unveiling the first coat colour.
Michael Gunn-Henderson and Hugo van Coller
Collfin Group is a household name
in the Lowveld, a father-and-sons trio
that’s been going from strength to
strength over the past 30 years. When
Henk van Coller moved his family to
the Lowveld in 1990 he continued
property development. And later it
became an opportunity for Henk to
work with his two sons, Wouter and
Hugo. Each with their own unique set
of skills, they make up a formidable
team that doesn’t shy away from a
challenge.
Their current development, KaMagugu
Extension 4, will eventually have
515 housing units spanning over
27 hectares of lush green Lowveld
vegetation. The project offered an
opportunity to invest in the local
community. Ample job opportunities
are created and major upgrades to
the area’s infrastructure are being
made. The housing will further serve
the public by allowing for shorter
commutes to Mbombela’s hub for
residents. The Van Collers plan to
complete the project in four years.
It was, however, not always a given
that Henk would be working with his
sons. Neither seemed overly interested
in their father’s business. Undeterred
by their underwhelming enthusiasm,
the boys were offered holiday jobs on
site and soon their love of construction
started to blossom.
Hugo and Wouter both attended
Stellenbosch University. Wouter, with
a head for figures, looks after all things
financial and runs the company’s
administration efforts. Hugo prefers to
get more involved in the technical side
as Collfin’s projects director. Their dad,
a lawyer by trade, deals with financing
and legal matters.
They pride themselves on the
relationships they have built with
suppliers/consultants in the Lowveld.
In many instances the secondgeneration
Van Collers are dealing
with second-generation suppliers/
consultants where Henk originally
dealt with the first-generation business
owners.
One such unique relationship exists
between Collfin and BUCO Nelspruit.
As a client of BUCO, they have been
“friends in business” for over 30 years.
The relationship is one of mutual trust
that developed over the years. The
company offers Collfin a fast, effective
and reliable service. It is also the goto
supplier for odd requests - BUCO
will source products for Collfin that it
doesn’t carry as general stock. Hugo
comments on the seamless admin
process that ensures they keep up with
the client’s fast-paced environment.
has now become their livelihood.
values that you have taught us.”

Two-wheel ride
Take to the road and explore local on your bike
Local road trips and holidays are on the up, and with our beautiful Lowveld scenery,
cultural history and unique flora, biking holidays and exploring on two wheels have always been
a popular choice as a way for local families to enjoy the great outdoors together.
Once you’ve done the research and found the perfect destination for your next family bike
vacation, the hardest part is out the way. Next is to line up all your family’s gear and get packing!
Packing for your bike adventure
It starts with the helmets, rain jackets, shoes and then, next thing you know, you’ve packed way
too many outfits and loads of stuff that your kids will never need. Let’s be honest, packing for a
week away or just one night with your family often means the same number of bags.
Fortunately, the team from Thule is here to help trim down your packing list and,
more importantly, make a checklist that’s right for your family.
Start with a duffel for essentials. A bike trip can go downhill fast – and not in a
good way – by forgetting to pack helmets and riding gear. Stick to the basics
and set aside one go-to duffel for all the gear you can’t live without.
Then you can use other bags, like rolling suitcases or backpacks, for clothes,
shoes, and activities for the kids. But you can’t have a great bike trip
without the essentials, so find a spacious, durable duffel bag to store
all your must-have items.
Giving the kids a great ride
When you’re away with your family, making sure you
can explore everything on your list means pedalling for
plenty of miles. For the little ones, just coming along for
the ride can be fun for them and you’ll be happy knowing
they are safe, cosy and not missing a moment while
riding around in a new place. A multisport bike trailer is
the perfect addition to any young family’s vacation with
bikes and is the best way to ensure you see all the sights
with the kids on board. They will be happy and comfy in
their spacious cockpit … plenty of windows, pockets for
snacks, and a five-point harness to keep them safe. Bonus
… some trailers conveniently convert from a bike trailer to
a stroller, perfect for when you reach your destination.
An alternative is to invest in a good child bike seat that
will allow you and your treasured cargo an opportunity to
enjoy the everyday bike rides – safely, easily and in style.
Most importantly … getting the bikes there!
The final step on the packing list is the most important and the one thing you really can’t do without on
the trip. The bikes, of course! But before you just strap any bike rack to your trunk, you need to choose
the correct bike rack for your car and your requirements. From hitch-mounted bike racks that tilt out of
the way for easy access to your trunk to easy-to-use platform racks that grab onto the wheels for simple
loading and unloading, there is bound to be a perfect option for you and your family. The new Thule
OutWay 2 and 3 Bike Carriers are premium rear-door mounted bike racks (no tow bar required) for an
easy getaway. These carriers can be mounted to a variety of vehicles and not only do they lock to your
vehicle, they also include locks that lock your bike to the rack. There has also been a huge growth in sales
of e-bikes for those who want to enjoy biking without doing too much hard work. The Thule EasyFold
XT Bike Rack (now also available in a black version) is a fully foldable, compact, and easy-to-use towbarmounted
bike rack for all types of bikes, including e-bikes. No matter how far away you plan to take that
next bike vacation, making sure your bikes make it to and from your destination safely is the only way you
can drive with confidence, knowing you and your family are on the perfect trip! Details: thulestore.co.za
