In the New Year we held an exhibition of textile jigsaw pieces by the Craftivist Collective, organised by Alex Messenger, Wolfson’s Assistant Accountant, in support of Save the Children’s ‘Race against Hunger’ campaign. Next, we hosted striking works on paper by Chilean artist José Miguel Valdivieso, brought to our attention by Sebastion Castro (GS). Our third exhibition in Hilary Term was textile work by Wendy Hughes. Her use of colour and texture to produce landscapes and abstracts proved hugely popular. In Trinity Term we enjoyed another exhibition of landscapes by John Somerscales. For Oxfordshire Artweeks we had invited local artist Jon Rowland to exhibit. This was his third exhibition at Wolfson, and it was fascinating to see how his work has developed over the years. After his last exhibition, two years ago, he kindly donated one of his paintings to the College, which now hangs in one of the seminar rooms in the Leonard Wolfson Lecture Theatre, together with a painting from his first exhibition at Wolfson donated by John Penney. Our final exhibition of the year was life drawings and drawings in biro by Helen Whitley and Christina Day respectively. The display cases have also been put to good use. Roger Tomlin surprised us with his imaginative ceramics of beasts and birds, followed by John Hall three-dimensional pieces in wood and Louise Calder’s crafts. In the new year Rose Wallace exhibited her flatback figures crafted from casts of contemporary packaging. For Artweeks we were fortunate to have works by Crabby Taylor, whose ceramic forms and colours blended beautifully with the Wolfson building. We have continued to provide weekly Life Drawing Classes in term. Our tutor this year was Tara Benjamin-Morgan, a recent graduate of the Ruskin who has worked hard to encourage participants at all levels. In July she will be hosting a day’s workshop of life drawing and painting. The Arts Society sponsored two special visits to the Ashmolean. The first, in November, was part of the Museum’s University Engagement Programme. The tour, led by Mallica Kumbera Landrus, focussed on ‘Routes and Roots: Displaying culture in a multi-cultural society’. Then, in Trinity Term, a group of Wolfsonians enjoyed a guided tour of the special exhibition ‘Cezanne and the Modern’. One of our students described these tours as ‘brilliant’ and ‘superb’, and we have been asked to organise more such visits. 75
