Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different 

on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of 

the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the 

victuals provided by local eateries. 

The place: George’s Place, in the Washington Commons shopping 

center, near the Acme. This marks the 23rd George’s Place to open in 

the last week. Okay, we exaggerate, but those Karapanagiotis boys are 

on a roll. Brothers Yianni and Pete, along with their trusty henchmen 

Nikos and George, are actually on their fourth George’s now. Two in 

Cape May, one in Cape May Court House and now also in Wildwood 

Crest. 

The vibe: Jack, Diane and baby Oban Ray hit up George’s in the 

Washington Commons, at the site which used to house Egg and Dart, 

a short-lived but very good breakfast joint. Because baby Oban is only 

six weeks old and not really mixing it with the general populace yet, 

we opted for the outside seats, sheltered by small cypress trees, with 

a view of Our Lady Star of the Sea church, which made the Catholic 

girl inside Diane happy. We chatted with owner Pete, whose baby 

boy Theo was born two days earlier than Oban and is already smiling, 

something which Oban has so far only mastered in his sleep. 

The food: Jack had his favorite George’s breakfast dish, the smoked 

salmon scramble, with capers. Capers are good! Smoked salmon and 

scrambled eggs are good! And bagels with cream cheese are good! 

Washed down with an OJ. Diane has gone on a real sweet tooth binge 

since giving birth and tucked into the limoncello French toast. There 

was a 10-minute break in proceedings for Diane as Oban enjoyed HIS 

breakfast, a liquid treat which very much resembled what he usually 

has for lunch and dinner (to be honest, he eats every 90 minutes). 

The takeaway: The George’s crew know how to get good food out 

consistently, and that’s a lot harder than it seems. You can also check 

out the other parts of their empire — the tapas joint Shamone in Cape 

May; Vintage, a must-visit dinner spot which opened last year at the 

Emlen Physick Estate on Washington Street; Younger Brother on the 

Cape May beachfront; and SCOLA, a romantical little eatery in Cape 

May Court House.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

Ah, June. That time of year when visitors 

from near and far happily descend 

on our tony little hamlet, an annual 

pilgrimage handed down through the 

generations. And the people that live 

here start mumbling, “Is it September yet?” Also 

handed down through the generations. 

It’s been a big week here at Exit Zero as the 

worst-kept secret in town officially became a 

non-secret. Or, as others might call it; a fact. 

You’ve probably read the breathless reporting 

that Exit Zero is taking over food and retail at 

the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, signing a minimum 

10-year (!!!) lease, which is awesome, but also 

depressing that Jack Wright will be pushing 

70 and I’ll probably be dead before he signs a 

second lease. (Sorry, it’s the Irish-Catholic in 

me.) The plan, as far as I know, and they keep 

me in the dark pretty good around here, is to just 

kind of get it open for 2021, then start renovating 

and rebranding over the next several years to 

the tune of $2 million dollars! (This, after being 

denied a $25-a-night raise for TNT… sorry, 

Irish-Catholic.) Anyway, we’re all pretty excited 

around here, and Jack has successfully expanded 

the kingdom he will eventually hand down to 

Oban Ray when he ages into his reign as King of 

Harbor Stone Docks. (Sorry, I just finished Game 

of Thrones.) 

When I told Jack I finished GoT, he said, 

“Great, what’s next, that new cop show Kojak?” 

Heh. I’m convinced Jack only keeps getting new 

buildings and leases because nobody understands 

his stupid Scottish brogue, so they 

politely nod along and smile, then a bunch of 

lawyers show up. 

I’ll have much, much more on this in the 

coming weeks/months/years. If I know Jack as 

well as I think I do (and I think I know him 

pretty well), it will be a massive success and he 

will pack on another 50lbs as he does with every 

massive success. Magazine, restaurant, baby, 

plus, if my math is right, about six others. (That’s 

a pretty solid burn right there.) 

Speaking of packing on 50lbs, I totally forgot 

my Weekly Weight Watch last week, but the rest 

of the column was so awesome I bet you barely 

noticed! I’ve been hovering within a pound or 

two of 240 the last several weeks, so you didn’t 

miss much. But now it’s time to get down to 

brass tacks if I want to show off my new Speedo 

thong this summer. (You can’t unsee it now.) 

Cath and I stopped by Pedego-Palooza last 

Saturday to eat some burgers and meet some 

folks. Cath was the hit of the party, of course, 

singing “Crazy” and “Stand By Your Man” with 

Coastal Tide (Dave Veneziale and Rob Moffett, 

who proved his intelligence by telling me he 

reads The Undertow first every week), who 

were strumming tunes for the event. Pedego 

(a super-nifty electric bike shop) is in the old 



Seaside Cheese and operated by 

David Cassidy (no relation to 

David Cassidy), his wife Sharon 

and other assorted hangers-on. 

David is a longtime Philly music 

guy and helps run WCFA-LP and 

we chatted about songs and bands 

with sad backstories. (Do not, I 

repeat, DO NOT Google Badfinger, 

“Dancing in the Moonlight” or the 

lyrics to the Warren Zevon classic 

“Excitable Boy.”) Wishing you guys 

the best of luck, and if you need a 

celebrity endorsement I had my 

eye on the Ridge Rider. (Honestly, 

I got the rock star treatment over 

there, when in reality I’m just a 

humble, handsome, godawfully 

talented man.) 

Unexpected Surprise of the 

Week: My Thursday delivery 

route started at 7am by flipping 

on WXPN to “And here’s a song 

from Lizzo.” Ugh. I am genetically 

predisposed to dislike hip-hop 

as I find it sort of an empty art 

form (though not as bad as reggae) 

and the droning Drake and 

DaBaby tracks my sons play every 

time we get in the car has only 

reinforced this position. Also, all I 

really knew about Lizzo was thongs 

on the sidelines at Lakers games 

and being mostly naked in her videos. 

(She is a plus-size lady, and, 

while I think her body positivity is 

awesome, it’s not my thing.) What 

followed was a goddamn delight of 

a song called “Good As Hell” that 

I have listened to at least another 

20 times since. And so should you. 

Cape Island Home & Garden 

got a very sharp-looking new sign 

in front of their amazing little nursery 

on Broadway, but I can’t say I’m 

not going to miss the old jawn with 

“10,999 ¾ Plants in Rear” spray 

painted on it. I’m wistful like that. 

To the lady who was 

WALKING ACROSS THE WHITE 

KNUCKLE BRIDGE between Cape 

May and Wildwood Crest and 

WALKING ON THE ROAD AND 

NOT THE SIDEWALK, there are 

easier ways to kill yourself. (Is the 

column a little dark this week? It 

feels a little dark.) 

Heartbreaker of the Week: 

The past 50 or so weeks, actually. 

Driving past the Villas Senior 

Center on delivery and seeing “WE 

MISS YOU” in the window. We 

miss you, too, seniors. With what 

looks like the inevitable end of the 

lockdown approaching, soon your 

kids can go back to not visiting 

you like usual instead of having a 

pandemic to blame. (This is what 

we call a joke. You might think it’s 

funny, you might think it’s mean. 

But if it moves you enough to 

send me an angry email, at least 

put your name on it. The world is 

not Twitter. And it does actually 

make me sad, but I am not paid the 

princely sum of $50 a week to write 

about my touchy-feelies.) 

Ran into Patrick Logue, 

Managing Whoziwatz at Exit Zero 

Global or something like that, 

as I was dropping off magazines 

at the ferry. I asked how things 

were going and he made the mistake 

of thinking I was sincere and 

launched into a long answer as I 

slowly walked away. Sorry, Patrick, 

but the ferry is, like, my sixth-tolast 

stop, and at that point I’m like 

the carriage horse trotting home 

at the end of the day; I don’t care 

about anything but hitting the hay.

how many levels my jokes work 

on. Horse. Hay. Genius.) 

Power Couple of the Week: As 

if getting married last week wasn’t 

enough, I spied the dynamic duo 

of Jon Katity and Leslie Weidel at 

Planet Fitness. (Yes, I’m into fitness… 

fitness whole pizza in my 

mouth.) They looked very glossy 

but very happy. Leslie makes soap 

and hosts a podcast, Jon is also 

known as musician Behind the 

Beautiful (and potential future 

Love Me Dude). All they lack, 

really, is an appropriate power couple 

nickname like Bennifer. Lon 

Keidel? Jeslie Wakkity? I vote Jeslie 

Wakkity. 

The only people who care if 

you wear a mask are people you 

shouldn’t care if they care if you 

wear a mask.

The NewArt Gallery announces second art exhibition of the 2021 season 

SOMA NewArt Gallery announces its 

second art exhibition of the 2021 season, 

featuring three regional solo artists 

and their work. “Continuum” by 

Wendy Wolfinger Coleman, “Cape May 

Light and Shadow” by Phil Courtney and “On 

A Solitary Walk” by Evelyn Dolan will be on

Who doesn’t like a good episode 

of The Twilight Zone? Many try 

to imitate but none have succeeded 

to top Rod Sterling’s classic. 

Maybe I’m being nostalgic. 

The series originally aired in 1959 and lasted 

until 1964, a year before I was born, with 156 

episodes. I didn’t catch on until reruns much 

later. But the show lived on with those reruns, 

a few reimagined versions — most recently 

from Jordan Peele in 2017 — and even a movie 

version in 1983. Still, the original prevails as 

the standard bearer! TV Guide declared it the 

fifth most important show of all time. 

Since it first aired, other shows have tried 

to build on the genre. Think Outer Limits, which 

first aired in 1963 or Night Gallery, one of my 

favorites also from Rod Sterling, which first 

came out in 1969. All cool shows, but The 

Twilight Zone is the best. You can even say The 

X-Files and Tales from the Crypt were inspired by 

The Twilight Zone, but they didn’t inspire me. 

So, there is the legend. Now let’s see how a 

new series “inspired by” fairs. 

The Movie Column 

By arts columnist Tom Sims 

Solos is a new show streaming on Amazon 

Prime featuring some of the finest actors — 

Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, Helen 

Mirren, Anthony Mackie, Uzo Adub — giving 

outstanding performances. The stories are 

“zone-ish” in that they are “other worldly” … 

but do they live up to the TZ standard? 

The shows have some high points, and 

I want to love them. Anne Hathaway’s story 

was perhaps the most intriguing and com- 

pelling — a time traveler is trying to save her 

mother, but can she save herself? Many of 

the other shows fall short of moving. There is 

much expository dialogue — much of it soliloquy 

style — that’s heady and cerebral. The 

episode titled “Sasha” is a remarkable demonstration 

of Aduba’s acting abilities. That segment 

is based on life after the pandemic, and 

a woman who refuses to leave her house. You 

would think something that timely would be 

inspiring. Again, it fell short. 

For my money, I’d turn to a quirky sci-fi 

“zone-ish” show called Electric Dreams, which 

also appeared on Amazon a couple of years 

ago but could have been missed. The series 

is also made up of longer episodes of quirky 

fantasy tales. Stars from the series include 

Bryan Cranston, Janelle Monae, and Terrence 

Howard, among others. Compared to Solos, 

there is as much investment in artistic direction 

— maybe more — and talent, but they put 

more stock in something paramount to all that 

— storytelling. In the end, that is what puts us 

n the imagination zone.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

To commemorate the publication of 

Kevin Karlson and my newest book 

Bird Families of North America (August 

release) I am laying down a 10 families 

challenge to readers. I’m challenging 

you to go out and find a representative 

member of at least 10 out of the 50 or so bird 

families represented in North America. 

It’s more challenging than identifying ten 

species, but you can manage this feat by visiting 

Cape May Point State Park where your 

first family group will be the ducks, geese and 

swans on Bunker Pond, all representatives 

of the Anatidae. So only one is countable. 

Hugging the shoreline, you are sure to see one 

of the herons and egrets, representatives of the 

Ardeidae. While the American Ornithological 

Society lumps gulls and terns in the same 

family, regarding them as subfamilies, Kevin 

and I split them into the Laidae (gulls) and 

Sternidae, terns. Gulls plop to the surface, 

terns hover and dive. On the shore or wading 

in the shallows you might find a migrating 

shorebird, mostly smaller than herons and 

brown, these fall in the Scolopacidae (sandpipers) 

or Charadriidae (Piping Plover) out 

on the beach. An Oystercatcher will credit you 

with a member of the Haematopidae. 

Looking up, vultures (Black or Turkey) 

are in the Cathartidae and hawks and eagles 

in the Accipitridae. Osprey is in its own family 

— the Pandionidae. While scanning the 

skies, you are bound to find a swallow or two, 

all representatives of the Hirundinidae. That’s 

10! But don’t stop now — starlings and House 

Sparrows represent two more family groups, 

and any pigeon or dove represents another 

new family. Any jay or crow moves you ahead 

one more family — the Corvidae. 

Another species you will encounter in 

South Cape May is a large, yellow-breasted 

buffoonish bird called the “Yellow-breasted 

Chat.” The bird will draw your attention with 

a cacophony of chortles, catcalls and whistles. 

For many years, the chat was ranked among 

the warbler, but is now split into the sole representative 

of its own family, the Icteridae. At 

the end of the road, before the dune crossover, 

you’ll pass a cattail marsh where Virginia 

Rails are, although they are difficult to find. 

You may hear the bird’s call, a descending 

series of pig-like grunts or a mechanical series 

that sounds like “kidick…kidick…kidick….” 

Birds identified by sound count as well as 

those identified by sight. That strident chatter 

you hear comes from the Least Tern colony 

on the other side of the dune. But you already 

have terns.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, open your ears to an outdoor concert! 

Nothing enhances a summer evening 

like music. 

Despite the challenges of controlling 

sound outdoors, musicians 

have been performing al fresco for 

millennia. Instruments designed for communication 

like drums, bagpipes and horns, were 

adapted for entertainment. Drums that keep 

soldiers marching in formation also work for 

dancing; the mournful tones of the bagpipes, 

said to carry for ten miles, lend themselves 

to ballads; and bugle calls, the soldier’s alarm 

clock, can also signal the start of a party. 

Early on, amphitheaters were built in canyons 

or ravines where nature could help to 

reflect sound. Architects of the first “bowls,” 

like the theater at Delphi, cleverly used the 

two faces of a chasm to reflect sound, made 

the seats out of stone to further amplify, and 

inserted empty jugs among the seats to add 

resonance. It worked well enough that a whisper 

on stage could be heard from the last 

row. Later, town squares served as musical 

venues, using surrounding buildings to focus 

and amplify sound. In the electronic age, early 

loudspeakers were problematic, resulting in 

distorted sound, odd lags and echoes, and the 

necessity of requiring listeners nearest the 

speakers to endure very high volume. Digital 

speakers have improved things dramatically. 

Free outdoor concerts, like at Cape May’s 

Rotary Park, introduce new audiences to 

music. Grab a lawn chair, bring a picnic dinner, 

your well-behaved dog, and your fidgety 

children, who can dance until the music 

lulls them to sleep. The Rotary Park concerts 

feature traditional brass bands, barbershop 

quartets, and banjo groups throughout the 

summer. They start at 7pm. Call 609-884-

The Emlen Physick Estate Outdoor Stage 

will present a series of classical music concerts 

this summer, as well as a June 27th 

concert featuring R&B favorites with Paula 

Johns. Tickets are $25. Visit capemaymac.org

Many outdoor restaurants also feature 

music — check with your favorite eatery. 

Concerts at the ferry terminal will return this 

year every Wednesday starting July 7. You can 

also enjoy music outdoors at local wineries. 

For example, Hawk Haven Vineyard has local 

singer/songwriters on summer Saturdays. 

Jessie Creek Winery has music on Saturday 

afternoons by their fire pits from 3 to 6:30pm.

STAR is a sweet girl who came to the shelter 

when her owner got sick and could no longer 

care for her. She is a little nervous when meeting 

new people, but quickly becomes friendly 

and social. Star loves to play fetch and thinks 

she is a lap dog despite her 94-pound stature. 

She is learning more behavior cues and will 

make a loving companion to any family. 

MOOSE came to the shelter when his family 

could not devote the time to him that 

he needed. He is an active boy who is treat 

motivated to enjoy his training. Moose loves 

running around the yard and going on walks 

to explore his environment. He does live well 

with children and would be best if adopted by 

an active family who will keep him busy. 

PERSEPHONE is a calm, sweet and 77-pound 

girl. She is a little leery of strangers, but once 

she is comfortable, she loves cuddles and to 

be pet. Persephone has great leash skills but 

is afraid of loud noises. Her last home was too 

busy so she would do best in a calm household. 

Persephone would make a loving companion 

to any family.

happen in her life. She was abandoned in the 

woods, had a litter of kittens and tested positive 

for FIV. Lady Bug is healthy and happy 

depsite her condition and is up to date on all 

vaccinations as well at spayed. She will be 

good in a home with children and needs a safe 

and loving family to take her in. 

DORY is a one-and-a-half-year-old girl who 

came to the shelter when her owner moved 

back to Puerto Rico and she couldn’t handle 

the air travel. It may take some time but once 

you give her a little love Dory will warm right 

up to you. She hasn’t lived with kids, other cats 

or dogs, but a slow introduction should be fine 

and make her a great house pet. 

TOPPER is a sweet kitten who has Cerebellar 

Hypoplasia. It is a permanent condition but 

with growth and time, he will learn to live with 

it just fine. Topper is housetrained and up to 

date on all vaccinations. The shelter asks that 

only those with experience in “CH” cats apply. 

Topper will make a wonderful feline friend to 

a loving family.
